how great is burr he's the best i love him he's so funny he's so funny and so
prolific but here's
the thing that i almost love even more he'll just send me like a video of like
a great drummer that
he loves oh yeah yeah i took it up but he's really good but uh i just love that
dude he's so good
he's great and i love getting him wound up and uh you know 2017 i was working
at this hotel
downtown phoenix that was like connected to the uh the comedy club down there
stand up live yeah
yeah oh yeah was that the palomar hotel yeah i worked at the palomar and so um
um i was working
there and um bill burr had came in he was staying there because he was doing
some shows and um i
helped him with his luggage or whatnot like and that was just like it was kind
of it was all this was
just organic it was all organic and uh you know i was helping him with his
luggage and then um
the whole time he was there we were just we were just chopping it up when when
he like first got in
and we were you know i told him i was a comic we were we were talking sports
more than anything because
uh he's a celtics guy right and the celtics were playing uh the sons and uh we
were just chopping
about sports and then he was like are you funny and i was like yeah and then he
was like
and i was like okay and then he was like well won't you won't you uh won't you
come by tonight
and then i'm gonna have you open for me and so that right there was like the
moment where i was
like oh shit and you had been doing like open mic stuff prior to this yeah and
i had been i had
been opening for like i got like i was getting like local work at the at the
club opening up for
bill burr is a big deal a massive deal because like you sold out crowd yeah
yeah the the that
room at stand-up live seats like close to 600 that's a great it's a great club
too yeah great club
and i um you know i never done that club like sold out because i had open for
people that you know
kind of just like lower level like touring uh comics but like you know got
enough uh name for
themselves to where they can get they can move around yeah yeah and um you know
it was it was
one of the most nerve-wracking things like ever like i went home i couldn't go
to sleep i couldn't
take a like a nap or anything and then so you went home and couldn't go to
sleep because you did it or
because you knew you were about to do it yeah i when i uh so when i got got off
work um and i was
going home because i worked the early shift right and i was going home like and
i usually like take
like a 20 minute nap just to get my just get restarted and i couldn't even
sleep i was like
man i can usually take a nap like it's nothing after work but i couldn't even
like because i just
kept thinking about it and then uh time came for it you know opened up it went
really good and then
he let me finish out the whole weekend with him he was like yeah you know yeah
finish it out and uh
he even paid me too which was like wow on top of that like i wasn't even yeah i
wasn't even
expecting any of that like and he was super nice and i was like uh i even asked
i was like man what
made you like you know right give me a shot like that and he's like what's the
worst that was going
to happen you're going to bomb for five minutes you know 10 minutes like what
so you know yeah
then he was like he goes you know now i also had like an you know intuition
like and i was like i
don't have betty be good do you and bilbert still still keeping any sort of
contact man yeah so uh
uh yeah like i see him around at the comedy store of course yeah and uh i've
got i've gotten real
close with uh joe rogan and uh so joe rogan will do like his joe rogan and
friends type shows
and uh i had to follow bilbert one night which was like insane because i'm
going after him bro
think about it he's so funny and he's he's a monster he's a monster so like
okay so
we're backstage at the store you know in the main room you've been there right
yeah of course yeah
yeah of course and um so we're backstage in the main room chilling and then uh
i didn't even know
bill burr was on the lineup like joe just says show up and right and then we
get you know we just
get going so bill walks in and he's like joe you know i want to go for you know
a little early
and i'm not feeling too good and i was like oh is he is he gonna go before me
or after me
you know what i mean because i wasn't going i knew i was going earlier on the
lineup because it was
it was a pretty stacked lineup and uh you know so i'm sitting there for like
you know 45 minutes
before showtime because we're all just chilling there talking and i'm just kind
of like what is
he going up you know and then the sound guy comes back he's like all right joe
how we doing this
he's like all right it's gonna go uh derek burr chappelle lacy and tony hinchcliffe
me and i was
like all right you know and at that moment which which was weird immediately at
that moment i thought
about everything i went through like in my life it was like it was like the
weirdest thing that was
like my first thought was like everything that i've been through like all the
crazy shit you know
with my family stepfather losing my brother i thought about all that and then i
looked at where
i was and then i was like i could do this you know i was like i could do this
did you kill it
yeah i actually did and the only way and like i and like when i was up there
like it was just like
going like people were laughing yeah like you know but what was funny like
because this could knock
off your fucking socks you know of course and uh when when um when they bring
bill up he got a standing
ovation walking out okay i mean yeah he's bill burr yeah and they they weren't
expecting him right you
said no yeah because i i think uh i've been to a couple of joe rogan shows and
i feel like every
time i go someone just jumps on stage yeah there's usually yeah so like there's
oh shit there's certain
cats that are like they call them drop-ins yep there's only certain cats like
they kind of got
the pass yeah like chris rock of course chapelle you know seinfeld uh martin
lawrence right like yeah
go ahead do what you want yeah yeah when those guys walk in it's like yeah when
you want to go up oh okay
we'll put you up one of them yeah bro and uh yeah he got a standing ovation
walking out i'm like
damn you know you're getting this like getting that rush or whatever but you
know needless to say i was just
like hey you know they already heard bill burr they haven't heard me yet you
know who's gonna light
that stage on fire first who bill burr bill burr's at home with a new kid four
months you're never
gonna see anything like that the first time oh i can't wait to hear him talking
about you're not
gonna fucking you're nobody's like i'm gonna build bill burr out right now yeah
he's at home with two kids
first time you know hasn't done dick whatever great guy playing the drums in
his basement he's gonna
come at this with a complete different outlook he's gonna attack somebody you
know somebody's gonna go
down hard yeah you know there's guys that you know a lot of people going down
hard yeah we're gonna go
out there and like fucking gangbusters bill burr plays the drums like a son of
a bitch well i was
talking i was gonna say something about him i finally did something that
actually stayed on topic i think
um he came to my wedding and then he had to go do a gig and he does the gig and
his wife stayed um
and he comes back in a different outfit like a pink jacket he left my wedding
and is such a good friend
he came back again because he was so happy for me and he's just um i was there
in philly at the
at the in camden at the tweeter center it was called when we were on the opie
and anthony virus tour
so it was tracy morgan myself louis ck is that the one where dom orera got heckled
and he went on and
he literally attacked the crowd it made bill burr a legend that was when bill i
was he roasted
philadelphia i was standing there right through the curtain that i was going to
come out
i had the sweet spot you know bob will do like 25 minutes in the middle because
i'm yeah i was just
a bitch so then they put me there and it was a sweet spot because you take a
lot of bullets coming
up with a philly audience you know in a jersey audience and bill i'd i'd known
him but i'd known
him through clubs but i but he got out there and they were booing him and he
just started to pummel
them back and said the worst things you can say every inappropriate thing you
could possibly say
calling talking about their cheese steaks and the sixers and just you know the
thing you saw yeah i've
seen it and at the end the boos were as loud as the cheers i think he got a
standing ovation he didn't
see it he comes off stage like a fighter he's all sweaty did you see that it
was horrible what the
was that i went bill that was great are you kidding that was amazing i've never
killed and
then he still didn't believe me and then i said you're gonna remember this this
is gonna you don't
know what just happened here if there's a tape of this this is this is going to
change you don't even
know and i bring it up to him and he's like he doesn't want to talk about it
but it is it was a defining
moment for his everything yeah no he's he's that guy that can just take a
moment and rant on things
like he knows how to rant better than anybody i know in terms of like in the
moment pick things
apart and piece them like that's what his podcast is one of the brilliant
things about his podcast
he does it two times a week and it's just him yeah it's just him ranting which
is crazy that he's
got that sort of muscle that he can just rant on things by himself just starts
reading things and
getting pissed off about this you know what here's what the problem is and then
he just goes off and
what's amazing is he knows what you know what i what i what i know uh that you're
not he's not alone
he's talking there yes all of it so he's ranting to people that love him and he
knows they love him
he's he's comfortable bill burr's calling oh what the heck what oh my god now
this is a miracle i mean
what about you what what the fuck bill yes are you
bill i mean let me ask you something can you cover for me at the store

billy to wish you a happy chinese new year
wow bill this is you know what because i've been getting a lot of calls
and no offense to anybody that else has called but this is probably this is the
this is the probably
the most shocking one are you old enough to be the head of the dragon
i'm not quite there yet but um
thank you bill and you know um you calling it is like it's kind of like a sinatra
moment to me
you know in comedy it's kind of a ron howard moment i wanted to say ron howard
