Edi Patterson, Jon Glaser (Episode 275)

I like having fun, I like to laugh, I like to meet people who can make fun.
Good evening! Oh, I almost said Doug, I almost said good morning. Good evening,
everybody.
Tim Heidecker with the Office Hours Live night show after evening show.
The Office Hours after dark.
It is November 9th. Is this a holiday? Is this a...
Tomorrow is a holiday.
Tomorrow is Veterans Day, but it might also be...
In Britain, it's...
International Clam Day.
International Clam Day.
That's all I could come up with.
No, it's the day in England where they wear the poppies on their...
Boxing Day.
No, you dumb dunce.
Because Boxing Day is right after Christmas.
Christmas is 26.
Sure, sure.
I know that.
No, it's, you know, in that song, in the John Lennon song, remember, remember
the 9th of November.
It's, uh...
It might be that song, but it's not that part. It's...
Folks?
A victim of...
Wait, what are we talking about?
What day is today in England?
Oh.
Somebody in the chat.
Somebody he's got.
Somebody knows.
Joseph, what day is it?
It's like, it's the remember...
It's basically Veterans Day, but it's, it's, uh...
Oh, I see what you're saying.
Where are the red poppies?
It's...
Heroin Day.
I wish there was a way to find out.
Why doesn't somebody tell me, like, where's John Gallantini or whatever in the
chat?
There's no way we're going to find out when someone...
No one's looking in the chat.
It's, uh...
It's the middle of the night for him, probably.
Oh, these mother...
Armistice Day.
Thank you.
God damn it.
Armistice Day.
Armistice Day.
Fred Armistice Day.
Fred's got his own day.
I know it's very weird.
I'm trying to adjust to the situation here.
It is nighttime.
It's dark out.
I've never been up this late before.
It's 7.30.
7 o'clock on the West Coast.
But I just flew in from New York.
And I've been up all...
You're in a loopy state.
Things aren't working.
Things aren't, like, fire...
I'm not, like, nothing's really going on upstairs.
You know what I mean?
You should be loopy and fun.
I am.
You should be extra fun right now.
And I was looking.
Somebody was showing me...
I was watching a video before the show began.
I was crying last...
I had to stop the video.
I was crying last...
But I'm going to go through...
I'm going to be moody.
I'm going to be irritated.
I'm, like, Tom Sharpling eight hours into his 24-hour thing.
Was that the...
That was the...
That's what you were crying about.
Oh, wait.
I need to tell...
I need to say something to Doug and Vic.
I want to say something to you.
Hold on.
Look at your chat, okay?
Look at my chat.
Just look at our text thread.
I just want to communicate something to you.
Oh, absolutely.
Okay, Vic?
Gotcha.
You would see this?
I'm just still wondering.
He doesn't even know.
Oh, okay.
Okay.
So I just wanted to communicate something off the air.
Wow.
I was in New York hosting.
Saturday Night Live.
Saturday Night Live.
That's right, folks.
But I got fired.
That's why I'm back early.
It was Saturday, though.
No, no.
Fired you after the show?
I flew out Sunday, met with Lauren and the writers Monday.
They pitched a bunch of ideas to me.
Some of them were great, and I came with my own ideas, and we were working them
out.
We started writing on Tuesday.
Wednesday, we decide what the sketches are going to be.
We start narrowing it down, and we start rehearsing them, and pretty quickly,
Lauren and some people
from NBC were said, look, come here, come here, come here, come here, let's
talk, let's
talk, and we went up to his office, and they said, this was a, we have to admit
something.
This was a mistake.
We thought we were getting somebody else.
We went with it.
We hoped for the best, but we just called Martin Short, and he's going to come
down
and host this week.
It really hurt my feelings.
All right.
I feel bad, because I'm doing that thing again, where my guest is here.
Tim, look, can I say something first?
Good Steve-ning.
Wow, very nice.
Because you're supposed to go to us, and then you go to the guest.
I'm the first guy to be fired from SNL midweek before, like, they just pulled
the plug.
They're not going to have a show this week.
They're going to do a best of.
No, Doug is here.
Doug, loosen up.
Thank you for being here.
Good Steve-ning.
And Vic, what do you have for me?
I don't have anything cool for night.
I forgot that it was nighttime.
So I'm just going to go with, I'm going to borrow Doug's good horning.
No, just don't do anything, because it's not morning or...
It's morning somewhere.
Oh, somewhere.
And we have intern Joseph here.
Little Joseph is here, St. Joseph.
Howdy, howdy.
Are you familiar with St. Joseph, the healing medicine man?
The biblical cuckold.
Was he really?
Was he really?
Well, there's Joseph, the, yes, the Mary's husband, father of Jesus himself,
stepdad for Jesus, really.
Jesus' stepdad.
But there is another St. Joseph, I think, who's like a medicine, like St.
Joseph's calamine lotion or something.
Wait, what?
Look it up.
All right.
But the top story, the headline is a guest, a guest, our guest, the guest, over
there in the guest chair.
You know her from one of the great comedies of the 21st century, The Righteous
Gemstones.
She's the one and only Edie Patterson.
Let's hear it.
Hi.
First time on the show.
First time on the show.
Good night.
Good night.
Like medieval times with a K.
Oh, cool.
That's cute.
Thanks.
Edie, Edie, Edie.
Look at you.
You are so, what a character you play on that show.
Because I see it, it's so weird to look at you because it's, do people tell you
this?
You see, I see you in there.
Yeah, but I look way different.
Way different.
Yeah.
Let's get a picture of Judy Gemstone up.
Because a lot of my audience doesn't have HBO.
Oh, got it.
Okay, well, let's get it in there for him.
Oh, Max, I should say.
Right.
Max.
So that, this is exciting.
What?
Oh, you're kidding.
Why is this happening now, Luke, Mick, Jagger?
I know why.
I know why.
Hold on.
Watch this.
Let's just do this for a little hour.
Tim's deep into his settings right now.
Oh, God.
It's unbelievable.
Wait, I don't hear it anymore.
Yeah, it went away, and I know why.
You want me to explain why it happened?
It's kind of cool.
I kind of do what I know.
No, it's not.
It's long and boring, but it has to do with my audio driver.
So that's the plan.
We're going to talk to Edie, and you seem to be, you're an improviser.
Mm-hmm.
You do this, you do this.
I saw this.
You do a, you did a one-hour, one-woman improvised show just the other night?
Yeah, just Tuesday the 30th, whenever that was.
Maybe that was Monday.
I don't know.
The 30th.
So you did it on Halloween?
The day before Halloween, yeah.
Is that the Groundlings?
That was at the Groundlings, yeah.
Is that where you come, is that where you're trained, you began?
Mm-hmm.
See, I told Edie this.
I don't know anything about her.
It's fair.
I didn't even go to Wikipedia.
No.
Come on, who doesn't?
Did you start as a writer on that show?
I mean, no, because you're in the first season, but you were hired as a writer
and to play that part?
Yeah, well, first, I had worked with those guys on Vice Principals.
Oh, you were on Vice Principals.
And I was not a writer on that.
But Danny and I wrote, we found that we liked improvising together, and so we
wrote a movie together after that.
And then when he created Gemstones, he asked me from the jump.
Do I know that movie?
No, we haven't made it yet.
It's sitting in the front desk, Vic.
It's sitting in the front desk.
In the front desk.
You're saying yet.
Is there a plan to make it?
Or you don't know?
Yeah, I think we will at some point.
We just haven't yet.
Well, you're the highlight.
I mean, should I go through the highlights of that show?
Because you're one of the, I think you're the funniest part of that show.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
Great.
Thanks.
Under that, it's, under that it drops off.
No, under that it's, that's a terrible thing to say.
Tim, you've got to really rank these characters now.
That's for your suicide, dude.
I'm confident, I feel confident to do that.
Because I'm going right to Uncle Baby Bobby Billy, whatever it is.
Okay, fair.
That's, that guy, that kills me every, every time.
I can't, it's so exciting when he shows up.
It really is.
Yeah.
Divine's character makes me a little uncomfortable.
I mean, like, it's just not, you know, just sort of like, it's so, he's so cringey.
And it's funny and it works, but it's just like, I don't, it makes me nervous
when he's,
when his stories are developing.
And then Danny's like the, the center.
For sure.
It's not as the fun, it's not the funniest part for him.
You don't think so?
Well, I mean, this is hard.
Jesse, it makes me laugh really hard.
Well, it's hard when you're talking about Danny.
Because I know Danny, you don't think I know Danny.
I mean, I mean, I'm doing, I mean, I'm doing, I'm doing, he's mounting down
here and there.
I know.
That, I mean, that character is on, like, so funny that this one feels like he's
like a little,
almost, if there's a straight man in the show, he's a little bit of a straight
man.
Give him that.
I would say Goodman maybe is the straight man.
That's true.
That's true.
But the problem is you can't, and then of course Tim, you, you, you and Tim
together.
Tim Balz.
Yeah, Balz.
Balz.
This is not comfortable for you because I'm putting you at the top, I'm putting
you at
the top of the pedestal, the old gemstones empire.
And what are you going to say?
Oh, thanks.
Yeah, I agree.
I know.
What do you say?
I'll tell Danny to his face.
What kind of creep goes, I agree.
Yeah, you're right.
God.
No.
All right.
So that's the show.
I was working on this song.
How did that song go, Vic?
Correct.
Oh, now we don't know how it goes.
I know.
It's like, I'd like to get to know you or something.
I want to know everything about you.
Want to know the color of your hair.
Know everything about you.
Want to know the what, the why, the where.
That's my interview theme song that I'm working on.
Great.
Let's take a call.
Let's make sure that's working.
We've got a whole new fleet of...
Wood Max.
What?
What did you say?
We have a new fleet of listeners.
Of Wood Max.
What are you saying?
Wood Max?
I can't...
Chad?
Fleetwood Max.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
You can't believe it.
Hey, everybody.
Hi.
Long time, first time.
Oh, welcome.
So what I was trying to say was that there's a lot of new callers and stuff
because we're
in a different time.
We're usually on in the morning.
There's now people that are like, oh, I'm at home.
I'm not at work.
I'm available to chime in.
Yeah, I'm usually at the office on Thursday, so this is great.
This is great.
I just want to say, Edie.
Edie, I'm a huge fan.
This guy looks like when you...
You know that game where you had the magnet, all the...
You had to put the beard, the beard, make the different mustache.
What is the name of that thing?
Wooly Willie?
I love that thing.
All right.
I'm going to have to look that up.
Pull it up, Joe.
But Edie, I was going to say between Gemstones, Vice Principals, and another
one of my favorites,
Tom's mom on 10-year-old Tom, which everybody should be watching.
You are responsible for some 10-year-old Tom on Max.
She plays the mom.
It is a very, very funny show.
Is it for kids?
No, it is not.
Really?
No, it is not.
Especially her character is not for kids.
But yeah, you are responsible for some of the better comedic roles on TV in
recent years.
Oh, man.
Thank you.
That's really nice.
Yeah.
You're like the Gilderad of the 21st century.
Gosh, dude.
I'll take it.
I love her.
And Tim, I was going to ask.
I know Glazer's not on until later, but I would love to find out if there's
going to
be any one-off OHL East in the future.
I know that we've talked about.
I'll get that over with now.
Absolutely not.
Fair enough.
No way.
You know John Glazer?
You must know John Glazer.
I know of John Glazer.
I don't know him.
You have respect for him?
I have respect for him, right there, yes.
That's all I got.
Thank you.
Okay, thanks.
Where'd you grow up?
Thank you so much.
I want to kno
