Christian Hansen & Zachary Treitz - American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders (Episode 291)

I like having fun. I like to love. I like to meet people who can make me laugh.
Good morning, everybody.
It's Thursday, April 4th, 10 a.m. on the Pacific Coast of the United States of
America here in Glendale, California.
That's where the weather is. Chance of rain. We're getting a little moisture in
the air.
I'm back in...
I'm back!
I'm back!
I'm back!
Why aren't I singing for ACDC?
I'm back!
That's all he's doing.
Why aren't you in ACDC?
Why aren't I singing for them? Therefore in...
I'm back! I hit the sack!
I'm back, back in my garage to do another episode of Office Hours Live.
We've got a terrific show today. We've got Zachary Threith!
And Christian Hansen, not Chris Hansen from Dateline, unfortunately.
That's what we were sold.
A bill of goods, I like to say.
One bill of goods, please.
You think anyone ever wants a bill of goods?
I would say, generally.
I'll take one bill of goods, please.
Coming up...
Ah, no. These are the two gentlemen behind American Conspiracy: The Octopus
Murder is now streaming...
...on Netflix.
Which I am a proud subscriber of.
And I'm watching everything Netflix puts out, all their TV shows.
I have much to say about that later in the show.
I'm Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC.
There we go.
And the boys are sitting here after a tremendous screening at Vidiot's here in
Los Angeles the other night that Doug went to.
Of course, I was invited.
Good morning!
And DJ Doug Pound is in the house.
Hard at work.
Whoa.
And to my, over my left shoulder, is Victor Berger IV, of course.
What's up, everybody?
And the Captain Carlin era is finally over! We're closing the book and moving
on.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
And it is, uh, we should do a, maybe we could throw a clip of that moment,
famous moment from the end.
Well, it felt, it was the beginning of what became the Iraq War, but it felt at
the time was the end of the Iraq War,
is when the soldiers were taking the big statue of Saddam Hussein and they roped
it up and they tore down the statue.
Or the image of the Reichstag in Germany at the end of the war when the big
giant swastika was detonated by dynamite.
Remember Gaddafi, that whole thing? Gaddafi dragged through the street.
Or when Bush had the mission accomplished man.
That is the moment we marked today, the end of Captain Carlin's reign of terror
on the office hours.
This is Captain Matt here.
And Matt, what are you working on, Captain Matt?
Matt is the captain of the...
Matt's little body walk out onto the stage.
Good morning, we're gonna introduce you to our worm farm.
Matt is insisting on vacationing this week in the city of Mexico City.
So our old friend Alec is back here.
Good to see you Alec.
Alec, give me your natural room tone voice, your natural speaking voice.
Hey guys, how you guys doing?
Great, you got that noted?
No, but you came in this morning and you're boisterous.
You've got a big, booming voice.
Hey, I'm a substitute teacher as my day job.
Oh yeah.
So, you know, wrangling those kids is no issue.
Well, I hope one of these kids, one of these teachers out there gets sick with
the flu so you can get some hours in.
TikTok is turning kids trans.
Alright.
Couple announcements here and then we're gonna talk to the Octopus Murder Boys.
That's what I'm calling you guys.
The Octopus Murder Boys.
Patreon is where you find us.
It's really the engine that fuels the show.
It is the gasoline that pumps into our tank.
And there's lots going on there.
We were up in Portland a few weeks ago for Tim Fest.
We did the live office hours.
That show is up there for patrons only.
And then this Saturday, April 6th at 6pm Pacific, we are back for the first
game night of 2024.
The full trinity will be around these tables back here playing bingo or
whatever games we've managed to get from Target.
What did you do on Saturday?
We're gonna do a two hour, two hour, two on one, full two on one checkers
tournament.
That'll be me and Vic versus Doug playing checkers.
Two on one?
Yeah.
With all red pieces though, that's sort of, it's kind of a combination of checkers
and memory.
You have to remember where your pieces are.
I was gonna challenge you to war.
Remember that game?
The cards?
Yeah, yeah.
Put some money on it.
All right.
And of course, you're out there in the world.
The whole world is watching, of course.
We're the number one.
I'm gonna take this from another podcast that keeps claiming this.
We are the number one live comedy podcast.
Okay?
And I dare you to prove me wrong.
I'm trying to think of some others that are lying.
Happy Easter, Vic.
I don't know.
We were off last week and it was nice to have a break, but I hope everyone's
doing well out there.
We have our Zoomers who can call in at any time and we can speak to them.
We also have the Hothead Hotline if we want to put that up.
That would be a lot of fun.
We also are going to, we have a special interview guest calling in later and we'll
have a Doug game.
And I like to set the table for the show.
Don't you think, Doug?
Yes.
And we'll do that by just welcoming somebody from out there.
I don't care who it is, Alec.
This is your big chance to make a difference on the show.
Hello.
Who the hell should we say hi to?
And don't worry, boys.
Hello.
I will say hello.
I mean, we're gonna get into it.
Believe me.
Last time we did a show with Tim, the guest out there an hour.
No one was talking to him and I'm staring at him the whole time.
It's stressing me out.
Well, we could do the Tonight Show thing where we welcome them in.
I mean, what if they have something to say?
What if they wanna say something?
I told them.
Before they're introduced.
They are welcome to chime in.
Okay.
This is a natural, everybody should feel really cool and relaxed.
Anybody there?
Don't you?
It stinks.
Anybody there?
Well, let's just, Christian, how are you doing today?
I'm great.
I'm doing well.
Zachary?
Good.
Okay, good.
There you go.
There's your interview with the Octopus Murder Boys.
They're calling me Charlie Rose 2.0.
What?
When are we gonna get into the questions about their movie?
Didn't I just establish that we just welcome everybody to the show,
we bring in a Zoomer, and then I said we're gonna get into it.
All right, let's get the Zoomer in then.
Hello?
Everyone.
Anybody there?
Hello?
Hello?
Good morning.
Hello?
Good morning.
Hello?
I feel like I'm interrupting office hours.
Come out of the kitchen.
I was...
Hey, what's up, dudes?
Hey, what's up, dude?
Hello?
Oh, it's Max.
Oh, yeah.
It's Max.
All right, Max.
What's up, fellas?
Tim, you're the only one of the crew I didn't get a hug from in Portland.
Oh, it looks like I dodged a bullet.
No!
It was the strongest hug and the nicest, warmest hug I've ever gotten.
And Lieutenant Carson was walking by and I said, "Captain!"
And he turned around.
I thought he was just gonna wave.
He turned around, ran over me, gave me a hug.
Big hot hug.
Who?
Carson?
No, Captain Carlin.
Oh, Captain Carlin, yeah.
Okay.
He said Lieutenant Carlson.
Yeah, it was very confusing.
I get them mixed up.
All right, well, good morning to you.
And I was also the one that said, "Oh, no, not Chase."
Oh.
Okay.
All right, well.
Not a huge fan.
Poor Chase.
Not a huge fan.
Anything else or should I let you get back to whatever you're up to?
I brought people who aren't familiar with either shows to both days and they
had a great time.
You guys did great.
Great.
Do you want to do a drop impression for us?
I know you're eager.
Hey, guys.
It's Jeremy Renner.
There you go.
Oh, look at that.
What else you got?
Doug.
And Doug was number one.
Sorry.
Sorry to every other thing about Doug's performance.
I told Vic that.
I told Vic that later that night.
I knocked on his room, his hotel room.
I was fast asleep.
It was 2:00 a.m.
He goes, "What is it?
What the hell?
Is everything okay?"
I go, "Everything's fine, Vic."
I take off my CPAP mask.
I just wanted to let you know that Doug was number one today.
Good night.
And I walked down the hall.
Thank you, Tim.
Thank you.
Good night.
That's a terrible thing to say, Max.
You should have some grace and some respect for everybody that you're speaking
to right now.
Don't single someone out.
What a terrible question to ask.
Hey, guys.
It's Jeremy Renner.
I don't...
Listen.
You did great.
Greg was...
Greg...
It felt like Greg was like on another level.
Stop ranking everybody.
But like if I had to go through like...
You don't...
You don't have to, man.
Number six...
Hold on.
Number six...
I hate when people complain.
I mean, listen.
I complain about things all the time.
Believe me.
And I have opinions.
And I have...
I'm petty and bitter about things.
Mm-hmm.
But when I see it written down by people...
People...
Somebody said that Fensler's bit at the show was too long.
Who cares?
Huh?
Oh.
Just...
Everyone shut up.
A person said that.
Unbelievable.
Because I knew it would get under your skin.
I know.
Well, why do you want to get under my skin?
It's not so great under here.
It's disgusting, in fact.
You got to do that Tony Soprano one.
Whoa!
Oh, yeah.
I need your skin.
I got to search for it.
Oh, well, listen.
Let's not...
Let's not get too, like...
Let's hear it.
Ref...
These drops, they have to come naturally.
You can't just start talking.
Oh, that would have been good.
Yo.
I want your skin.
There you go.
Doug, those are for notes after the show.
You know?
When we do our...
When we sit down and we do the...
We watch it back.
We watch it.
The autopsy?
Mm-hmm.
Anyway.
All right, Max.
All the best.
Let's talk...
Thank you, Max.
All the best.
Love ya.
We can do two things here.
We can get into it with these guys.
Or we can...
I could tell you my pants are too tight story from this...
From my recent trip.
Or should we save that for later?
Pants are too tight.
Now, you know what?
I think people are eager to hear from you guys.
And we will tease...
My pants are too tight.
The name of my memoir I'm writing.
My pants are too tight.
The Al Roker story.
Cut to tight.
Cut to tight.
That's a good idea for a memoir.
Like, name it somebody else's story.
But it is your story.
Yeah.
So let's talk about...
I'll tell you my background with this.
Is I get texts from my mom.
A lot of the time.
And she's often checking in.
And asking how I am.
And appreciate that.
And also tells me what she's watching.
And what she's up to.
And she wrote a few weeks ago.
I'm watching the Octopus Murders on Netflix.
Very good.
So my mom comes in hard.
Now, usually I don't follow through with the recommendations.
No offense to my mom.
Because often they are...
No, I want my mommy.
I want her to come and fetch me.
A different...
Kind of programming that I'm not going to watch.
I don't say that to her.
Like, what's a typical one she would recommend?
Days of our lives?
Like a Norwegian cop show or something.
Yeah.
It's really...
It's subtitles, but it's really good.
But I said, you know, I was up in Toronto.
So I got on my laptop.
I started watching.
And I got drawn in.
So tell me a little bit.
Zachary, you're the director.
Yep.
You're the subject.
Really.
One of the subjects.
The researcher.
Yeah.
Tell us, from your perspective, how you got involved.
But maybe first, like a broad macro view of the series.
Of the Octopus.
I'll start.
I got involved with this because my friend, Christian, who I grew up with in
Kentucky.
Kentucky boys.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's very...
Taken from inside of my mind.
Very tasteful.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um...
We...
We grew up together.
Christian had...
Was...
We both moved to New York around the same time.
And he, at some point in his journey, had started...
He was like a photojournalist working mainly with the New York Times.
But on the side of that, he started talking about this story, this journalist,
Danny Castellaro, who had died a year into an investigation into a piece of
software.
Right.
And he died in 1991.
And Christian, Christian told me about that.
And maybe he should talk more about what that process was.
But I got into it just because I'm a film maker, I guess.
But mostly in like indepen
