Bon Voyage Tim & Eliana, Jacaranda (Ep 325)

I want your skin.
What the fuck?
I like having fun, I like to laugh, I like to meet people who can make me laugh,
I like
having fun, yes I like you to laugh, I like having fun.
Good morning everybody, it is January 22nd year 2025 and we are broadcasting
live from
the hills of Glendale, California on this beautifully crisp, toxin-free air
that we get to experience
every day in this wonderful city.
Happy to be here on a Tuesday ladies and gentlemen, that's right, your calendar
app is not defective,
we are coming live Tuesday of this week because we are, I'm getting on the bus
tonight, and
off onto the road we go.
We're gonna have a fun show today folks, despite all that's happening in the
world, it's all
falling apart, you might say it's slipping away from us, all sense of reason
and logic,
norms, but perhaps there's a silver lining, we'll find out today, that's our
goal today,
is there a silver lining?
And I'm going to be doing it with one of the guys I've known since 2004, going
on 25 years.
Oh and do you feel that guys, do you hear all that landscaping happening?
I don't think the audience, Luke is the audience picking that up?
Probably not, right?
I don't think so.
No, we should ignore it.
Boo!
This is what we hear in the studio right now guys.
Boo!
In fact, it's funny because every other week these guys come by the place and
do their
thing.
They clean up all the leaves and they keep, what do you call it?
Landscaping.
It's just.
Mow and blow.
They do the whole neighborhood.
They come in, it's like a fifth, it's like 10 minutes.
Every Tuesday morning, every Tuesday morning at 9am, we have our weekly Zoom
meeting with
the boys here.
And every other Tuesday, these guys come at 9 and it's chaos every other
Tuesday because
it's so loud and if I turn my mic on, it gets blasted with the sound of the
leaf blowers
and all that and it's hell.
It's just hell.
So anyway, it's happening now.
Today is Tuesday and I'm, but I am joined by veteran, an actual veteran here.
Doug Lussenhop, DJ Doug Pound, served in the armed, the air force, right Doug?
Old Navy.
Oh, the Old Navy.
Sorry.
Good horning.
And my heart goes out to you.
Easy.
I thought you were going to do the traditional heart going out gesture, which
is offensive
to some people.
We're all very familiar with the traditional heart goes out to you gesture.
Yeah.
And anyone thinking that that's anything else is psychotic.
VB4.
Here I am.
What's up, everybody?
Everybody sing M-A-G-A.
And Captain Carlin is in the house.
Salute.
Salute.
Like that.
Okay.
Yeah.
And my special guest, my friend, she's going to be playing some music later
today on the
show with her band, Jacaranda, Jaco Pastorius, Eliana, and a member of the very
good band and
my traveling partner, Ms. Eliana, ooh, fade.
Let's see a picture of Donald Trump saying a fade.
A fade.
Oh, yeah.
Actually, I have that.
Hold on.
Just came out this morning.
He was asked to say the members of my band, ooh, fade.
He had no problem with Josh Adams or Connor Catfish Gallagher, but when he got
to Eliana,
ooh, fade.
I get it.
How are you this morning?
I'm really good.
You're really happy to see me?
I love music.
I'm so happy to see you.
Happy to spend a month with me and my antics?
Yes.
Okay.
I know you are actually.
Yeah.
No, I really am.
You were in the news this weekend.
I don't think so.
Well, you were much talked about because you were performing with the great Van
Dyke
Parks.
Van Dyke Parks.
Well, you were performing on the bill, not with him.
It's true.
Oh, amazing.
It's true.
In the Romanian Symblum Band, the Cory Beers Symblum Band is Van Dyke's, I don't
know,
favorite band.
He has them open for him on all five of his farewell concerts.
Quickly describe this band because I saw it once.
It is pretty remarkable, actually.
A Symblum is like this big, maybe it's a trapezoid shape instrument.
It was created by a piano maker in maybe Romania.
I'm not really sure, but it's basically like if you had a grand piano and took
the lid off
and then you hit the strings with mallets, but the strings, they're like tuned
differently
than a piano and it has this kind of like dulcimer sound.
Right.
Sounds like a dulcimer.
Kind of like laragi.
Kind of what?
Laragi.
Oh, sure.
Oh, yeah.
And the music itself is kind of Romanian, Eastern European, klezmer-y kind of.
Yeah.
Klezmer-y.
I showed it to a Romanian guy that I met and he was like, oh, this is what
people play
at weddings.
It's kind of like Romanian folk party music.
Here's a picture for you if you're curious.
Oh, yeah.
Definitely show a picture.
Don't play any of the music.
Oh, yes.
There's a Symblum.
That's a big piece of equipment.
That's a big piece of gear.
Yeah.
You don't have a gig bag for that thing.
No.
You have a tiny transit van.
And you run that through a big muff?
You run that through a big muff.
Doug, there's ladies present.
That's enough of that Symblum, okay?
Yeah.
Anyway, and this was Van Dyke Park's last concert, apparently?
Yes.
He says it's his last concert singing.
He's gonna continue to play music, but no more singing, he says.
Squawking.
His word, not mine.
That's a weird distinction to make.
I would just make the commitment to not do it or keep doing it.
No more music.
And if you sing, great.
Well, it was his fifth farewell.
He's like, what does he kiss?
Kiss?
Who does this Van Dyke Park think he is?
Kiss?
Where are these parks?
Bye-bye.
Uh, speaking of bye-byes, we want to say goodbye to Garth Hudson of the band.
And now we have no remaining member, no members of the band left.
Whoa.
And they're, of course, my top, I think they're my top five bands.
The band.
So let's, uh, let's have a hundred minutes of silence.
You don't want, you don't want Vic to play some, uh, organ?
Chess fever?
I could do a little chest fever.
Wait, which one's that?
How's that go?
What's going on?
Just got into Nazareth.
What?
All right.
I don't know that.
I don't know that one.
Garth was 87 years old.
It seemed like he was 90 years old for a hundred years.
But what a genius, genius.
Uh, I remember hearing that Garth Hudson, uh, was only like when he was, when
they were
all young, he was like, they, he wanted to be in this band, but his mom was
like, no,
you can't be in this band.
But the way that she talked him into it was that he was like, I will give them
music lessons.
That would be like the trade that for letting me be in the band, but I will
provide them
music lessons.
And that's what she thought was, was what he was supposed to do was be like,
you know,
trained musician like you.
So.
Wait, he's going to give the band music lessons?
Yeah.
That's like the arrangement they had.
That's the exact same arrangement I have with my mom to play in your band.
Yeah.
That's so funny.
And your music lessons for me have not helped at all.
Working on the caged system.
Oh God, no, no, no.
Pentatonic scales.
Got apples.
Matt, let's take a call.
I want to, I want to get through so much.
We have so many clips to talk about.
So much news to get to.
Absolutely.
Our old pal, Max is here.
I think that's always a good omen for a tour.
Talking to our old pal, Max.
Max.
Hey, what's up everybody?
Hey, Max.
Are you coming up to, you're in Seattle, right?
I'm in Portland.
Close.
That's the same thing.
Come on.
Pretty much.
Pacific Northwest side.
Well, speaking of that breaking news.
I just got this in my news alerts and a lot of people are talking about this,
but I think,
let's see here.
Ever, ever out.com.
Big magazine in Seattle, big website in Seattle.
We just got listed in the top.
Listen to this.
Look at this.
The top 39 events in Seattle this week.
What?
That's huge news everybody.
Are you coming in 39?
Top 39 events in Seattle this week.
So if you're going to be doing, people generally do like 40 or 50 events in a
week usually.
So we've sort of hit that cutoff.
We're like, we're in that top 39.
39.
Yeah.
Oh, thank you.
What's going on, Max?
What can I do for you?
Well, you know, the other day I was driving or about a month ago, I was driving
in Portland
and I saw an OHL bumper sticker in the wild while I was driving downtown.
You start honking away.
Oh, I did my best to get their attention.
I was behind them going, fucker, stop the fucking car.
I pulled up next to him real fast.
I said, fuck it.
You, we got a similar interest.
We like the same things.
We had the same fucking thing.
And they kept on driving.
They looked scared.
It was, it was a whole thing, but I wanted to see, I got a multiple choice.
I wanted to see if you guys could guess which band sticker was next to the OHL
sticker.
Ooh.
Okay, good.
You've got it.
We're not just randomly guessing.
Wave to me next time.
Okay.
No, we got multiple choice.
Are you ready?
Ready?
Yes.
A.
System of a down.
B.
Trapped.
Oh.
D.
Or C.
Nine inch nails.
And D.
Corn.
Oh, shit.
All right.
I'm going to go first if you don't mind.
What's trapped?
How do you spell that?
I would have assumed ween.
T-R-A-P-T.
Trap is T-R-A-P-T.
See?
One of the butt rock bands, man.
I don't know.
Okay.
I would say, my guess is, I'm going to go with system of a down.
T-R-A-P-T.
It's probably trapped, but my guess is.
Corn.
I think it's, I would have to say it's trapped.
Just because like, why would he say trapped?
Why would he say that?
Right.
I would not have thought of that.
Corn.
I'm going to go nine inch nails.
Oh, that's not a nice spreader.
Matt added it again with the win.
It was nine inch nails.
That's what I was going to guess.
No, that's what I was going to guess.
You didn't let Ellie go.
That's okay.
You know what?
That's okay.
I was going to guess.
It's fine.
I'm sorry.
I apologize.
It's a man's world now.
It's fine.
Oh, no, no.
You got to know your place.
You got any new drop impressions, Max?
Nine.
Oh, gosh.
So, Doug's got a drop that I've heard a couple times.
And I know that it is Rick to life from the New York hardcore band, 25 to life.
And so, Doug, can you play it after I do it where he goes.
Oh, man.
I don't even know what I.
Yeah.
You know what?
You're.
Try it again.
Try it again.
You're capping out.
You got to turn your audio louder.
Okay.
We got it, though.
We did.
We did receive that.
Thank you.
Oh, that's good.
Thanks, Max.
I don't know what I named it, because I didn't know who's.
It's okay, Doug.
We'll figure it out and we'll talk next time.
I'm going to find that.
And Max, if you are coming to the.
Wait, is it this?
There it is.
There it is.
There it is.
There it is.
There it is.
That was good.
Wait, here's another part.
He's loving it.
That's amazing.
Somehow, it's laughing so hard that his audio is capping out.
What are those lyrics?
It's Tasmanian Devil.
Tim, what did you want me to do with the show?
I just want to warn you.
If you're coming to the show in Portland, we have a no tattoo policy at the
venue.
And that's actually extended to all venues.
So you want to cover them up.
Okay?
Everyone, cover up your tats.
I don't want anybody getting kicked out.
Turtle necks and gloves.
Turtle necks and gloves.
Yeah.
All right, Max.
Good to see your beautiful face.
I can't wait to see you in person.
You as well, Tim.
Love you.
All right.
Bye-bye.
Got to get back to work.
Yeah, I guess.
Whatever kind of work that is.
He's making multiple choice questions.
That's his job now.
He works for the SATs.
There he goes.
I have a big, big surprise for everybody in the studio.
And I'm going to need, I have a new addition to the home that I'm going to be
potentially
needing, depending on how everyone behaves the rest of the year.
Carson, would you bring in the new addition to my home?
New addition?
You got Bobby Brown?
Hmm.
Bring it in.
Quickly.
Whoa.
Quickly.
Whoa.
Give me this thing.
Jesus.
All right, listen up.
You know what this is?
This is a fucking chainsaw from Ryobi.
And I have it now.
You got to get a Makino.
Hey.
You going Ryobi?
You hear me?
It's going to last a week.
Yeah.
You fuck around.
It's always brave.
With the fucking heads.
This goes for you too, Captain.
Zip goes the head.
And you're lucky I'm not bringing this
