Josh Freese, Hasco Enjoyments (Ep 332)

ruffle popcorn?
I like having fun.
I like to laugh.
I like to meet people who can make me laugh.
I like having fun.
Yes, I like to laugh.
I like having fun with me.
Good morning, everybody, unless you're on the East Coast
or other parts of the world where it is afternoon or evening.
It's me, Tim Heidecker, here on Office Hours, the entire show,
and we'll be talking at this tone, at this level.
It's Friday.
Fun Friday.
That's right, folks, TGIF.
We couldn't be happier to be here in Glendale, California.
It is Friday, March 21st, the first day of spring--
second day of spring.
Second day of spring!
And we're going to have so much fun.
I like doing a show on Fridays.
I like doing pizza Fridays.
In fact, a week ago we were doing game night here.
If you're on Patreon, you knew it.
And patreon.com/officehourslive is where you can find the best way to support
Office Hours, your favorite show.
Don't expect the good stuff if you're not a member.
You're going to get the shit.
That's what we do.
We do the shit up front and save the good stuff for later.
That's why my first guest is Josh Freese, and we'll be talking to him soon.
Wee!
Not nice.
Well, I'm joined by Mr. DJ of Doug Pound, joined again by him.
Good horning!
What?
Is that real?
All right!
I didn't know about this.
Wow.
Just getting my lip back.
I'll be having-- I'll be getting some better songs in the future.
Beautiful.
And that's terrific, Doug.
Thank you for that.
It is.
And I am also joined by VB4, Victor Berger IV.
I don't have anything different like that, but I have a chai tea I'm drinking
here instead.
It's a little different.
Let's hear it.
Let's hear it.
Let's sip, everybody.
Mmm.
Gross.
And the Worm Dude.
Hey.
The Worm Dude, Mr. Worm.
Hello.
Slink slithering around in the dirt.
Worm Dude here.
The Worm Dude.
He called himself The Worm Dude.
Later in the show, Hasco Enjoyments will be playing some music.
You may know J.P. Hasen from all my tours and all my Instagram videos.
In fact, you see him side of the stage.
Well, now he's center stage.
Host of Glendale's Got Talent presented by Office Hours Live last year.
That's correct.
And his band is an all-star group now.
You don't want it.
Guy from Death Grips.
Yeah.
Nick, what's his last name again?
Uh, Reinhardt.
Nick Reinhardt.
Uh, Conor Catfish Gallagher sitting in on the pedal steel.
And, uh, Taylor Plenn playing saxophone.
Um.
And I'll be sitting in on cornet.
Just what they, just what they were hoping to hear.
Uh, Josh Friese is here.
Josh Friese, a returning guest.
So awesome.
Not many returning guests on this show.
A lot of people have a bad time.
Right to Matt afterwards.
Matt checks in, says, "I hope everything went well."
And they say, "Well, frankly, if I can be honest, it did not go well."
I'm on your bumper.
Did not appreciate the way I was treated.
So we have a rare example of things going well.
Josh Friese, legendary drummer for, what do you put first on the resume?
It's funny because I saw an ad for the show today and it said Foo Fighters and
Guns N' Roses.
And I was like, oh man, Guns N' Roses is like, it was such a weird little blip
for me.
Mm-hmm.
You know, I'm like, I'll put like Devo or the Vandal of the Basements or
something.
Vandal of Devo.
Stang.
Yeah.
That was my little reference.
Did you say stained?
Stang.
Stained.
You're in stained.
Would you join Puddle of Mud if you were asked to tour with them?
I played on their first record.
You did?
I played on probably every Puddle of Mud song you've heard on the radio.
Is that correct?
I just threw that, I just pulled that name out of my head.
Yeah.
Let's get, what does Puddle of Mud sound like?
Are you serious?
Yeah.
What's the problem?
They didn't have a drummer?
They didn't have a drummer.
Well, how do you get into the place where you got a label and you're going to
make a record
and they're like, there's one thing I want to remind you all, we don't have a
drummer,
so I don't know what we want to do.
And we're a rock band.
I think the label, whatever, got a tape from this guy or somehow got connected
with the singer.
And they went out to see his band and they liked his voice and they liked some
of his songs,
but they didn't like some of his band.
Okay.
So we had a Pete Best situation.
They had to have that conversation.
I do like some of their songs.
We should find out who the Pete Best of Puddle of Mud was.
Oh.
Who's the original loser who's in that band.
I will tell you this, the label guy told me that when he flew out to where they're
from,
they're from somewhere in the Midwest or maybe Oklahoma or something, but
somewhere in the middle there.
He says they went down to the basement to see the band rehearsing.
He said one of the guys had sanitary napkins taped all over his head.
Okay.
Down in the garage while they were jamming.
So that's what they were kind of dealing with.
That's what they were dealing with.
Is that also AKA a tampon?
So then this is, I don't see you on this picture here.
So did they eventually found, you recorded, you went in the studio and then
they found a touring,
they found a guy to join the band.
That's exactly it.
And then sometimes.
Were you offered that spot and you said no or they just.
I think they didn't even bother asking me because they knew I was already
involved in a bunch of other things.
I probably was going to go do that and then bring me in just as a session
drummer.
And then at the end of the record, they said, you know, we want to try and make
this look like a band.
So the new guy that we have, do you mind?
I go, if you leave my name off the album.
It's fine.
Totally cool.
It's not a big deal.
Hey, Josh, I have a question I was wondering is, what's the hardest band to
play with that you've played with?
The hardest band to play with?
Like the hardest drum parts and you know.
Hmm.
That's a good question.
And the easiest one.
Uh, well, I mean, wow, that is, that is a tough question.
Puddle?
What's that?
Puddle.
P-O-M.
Yeah.
Puddle of Mud, exactly.
I mean, you know, stuff like when you're playing with Sting, he's got a bunch
of like odd time signature things and stuff like that.
You gotta, you can't just be on autopilot.
But, uh, you know, it's like, uh, sometimes the physicality of things like the
Foo Fighters play like almost three hour shows.
Jesus.
That's not easy.
Yeah.
You know, the parts not, aren't necessarily difficult, but it's like doing it
for that long at that level is difficult.
Uh, Nine Inch Nails was similar.
Nine Inch Nails was kind of like a marathon.
Every time I got off stage, I felt like I had lost about seven pounds.
Um, but other than that, I try not to throw myself too far out of my comfort
zone.
I try and stick with the, you know, the stuff I know.
Doug asks a serious question and then undermines it with drops.
Let me ask a question to the control room, because I find I watch the show
backwards later in my bed.
And I go, was anybody else in this room watching?
Is there a plant coming out of, uh, Josh's head or not?
Oh, yeah.
Is there a plant coming out of his head or not?
No, no, not on his angle.
Okay, fine.
It's right next to it.
It's nice.
It's like a sidekick.
We got a bunch of set dressing, cause JP wants everything to be so nice with
the plants.
I said, I don't say a word.
But then if I find, yeah, show me the shot.
Well, you should have heard.
Okay, that's fine.
There's some donuts on my lap, though.
And Josh brought in some donuts.
Oh, my God.
If you guys are nice, I'll give you one.
I'm gonna save mine until after the show, my friend.
Okay.
Nobody wants to see me.
I want one.
Fat, fat, though.
Uh, can I just plug a few things here, folks, before we start?
The show has not begun, as you know.
Doug's plugs.
This is just like pre-game stuff right now?
We're just warming up.
We go live in 20 minutes.
Show moved to 10:30.
Live in three hours.
That's a good question.
That's actually a good idea, because you get through some of that awkward start,
and you
just pop in.
We start the show with nobody listening at 9:45, and then at 10, it's like we're
flying high.
Could be an idea.
I like it.
Very quickly, Timfest 2 is next weekend, not tonight, but next Friday.
I posted the set times on my Instagram and my website.
You can find that there.
One, two.
Friday night is Office Hours is the big star with Neil Hamburger.
Saturday is on cinema with the big star.
Command performance from DJ Doug Pound.
Of course, we have a very good band.
A lot of surprises.
Got a big surprise, big fun surprises for Office Hours.
And that's in, where is it?
Where are we doing this?
Austin.
Austin.
Oh, that's in...
Austin.
Austin.
That's where that is.
Austin, Texas, folks.
Austin.
The capital of ideas.
Everyone loves new ideas, and that's what's happening in Austin.
All everywhere.
Surprise, motherfucker.
Where's that again?
Austin.
And I'm starting a new club in Austin.
Did you hear the news?
I'm starting a new club.
It's called Father Boat.
You want to work through that one?
Ah, I get it.
Father Boat.
I like it.
It's a thinker.
Yeah.
I want the audience to think about that one.
Counterprogram.
He's softened.
What's this?
Heidecker has evolved.
Yes.
He's just kind of an intense guy.
Yeah.
He's softened.
Jesus Christ.
Is that Chris?
So, yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation.
Yeah.
He's softened.
Jesus Christ.
Is that Chris?
So, yeah, I guess that was the topic of conversation on Maren with Chris Fleming,
who we love, and I love Chris Fleming, and I love Mark.
I mean, what do you want me to say?
We have a great relationship.
Speaking of Mark, there's so much to get to today.
Josh, what is that over there?
What's that?
Oh, hi, Mark.
Oh, hi, Mark.
I see an old woman's face.
This is Laughin' Head Granny, and she's part of the Laughin' Head family.
I didn't know about the Laughin' Head family.
I didn't know about the Laughin' Head family.
From the late '70s, I actually have about five of these, like, different ones.
I've got, like, the dad and the grandfather, and there's a yodeler and a clown.
And if this still worked, which it doesn't, you used to be able to pull this
thing, and
the tongue goes in and out, and it spits water.
Whoa.
And the eyes go up and down, and it goes .
Oh.
Sure.
It's really perverted.
Does it work?
It's really creepy and low.
No, but it just, it still looks good, and I've got it at my house.
It's been kind of the subject of a lot of artwork of mine, and album covers,
and another record
that I've got coming out soon, which is just this.
There's just a picture of that.
And when I was talking to JP about his musical performance today, and if I
could maybe sit
in somehow, then I listened to the song, and I was like, God, God, I'm just
gonna muck
it up.
Sure.
What am I gonna do to it?
I already warned Vic to stay away from his Yamaha.
That was great.
Hey, I have a sound.
Go ahead.
Go ahead.
I thought we could mic.
I have a sound clip of that granny, if you wanna hear it.
Oh, you do?
Yeah.
Let's hear it.
Put her on mic so we can hear it better.
I thought I was gonna say, "Austin!"
Why?
All right.
She actually doesn't make a sound, but I told JP that some friends of mine from
Athens
that knew R.E.M. said that when they were growing up, like when R.E.M. made
their first
record, on track 24, supposedly, there was a live microphone on a rose in a
vase in the studio,
we were recording.
Okay.
And it was kept in record for the whole record, apparently.
So, like the essence of the rose is recorded.
Sure.
Not that it was breakfast or anything.
And so I said, "Maybe we could do that.
Maybe we could just
