Ari, are you there?
I'm here.
Hey, there you go.
I think it's a fucking masterpiece.
Just like Bill Hader said, by the way.
And Doug saw it last night.
Your thoughts?
I saw it two nights ago.
Awesome.
I think it's my favorite Ari Aster film.
How do you address these accusations of that you're a centrist,
or you're sitting on the fence,
or all this bullshit that people are saying about you?
That's a pretty bad faith reading of this film.
Yeah.
You know, because I've heard people say,
you let the left have it worse than the right,
which to me feels like an insane thing to say.
In the movie, I mean, two distinct things happen.
One is, and this is, spoiler alerts, okay?
Spoiler alerts.
I'm sorry if you're watching this and haven't seen the movie.
Shame on you.
You should have been there opening night.
Joaquin, his character gets in the movie.
Like, if you were trying to make some movie about being a hoax or not real,
you wouldn't have included that plot in the movie.
And then the other part, the stuff is like,
the character, the, he gets in the movie.
Like, I think you're making huge lefty points in the movie.
And I don't even know your politics.
I just assume you're not a lunatic, you know?
Like, because you seem like a reasonable guy.
You're right.
No, I'm like, I'm hard left.
It's just, it's just, yeah, I wanted to make a film that was sort of inscrutable.
To your earlier point, like, satire, like, the minute you pull up, like, a
chair and start
explaining to the audience, like, okay, but seriously, folks, here's where I
land.
Like, the movie is fucking over.
It's over.
It's just like.
There's a moment in Eddington that I remember feeling like, oh, this is so why
I'm here.
This, this is why you're directing it.
And this is what's so special.
And I don't know if it's, if it is for anybody else, but for me, it's just him.
You must know, like, this is going to be fucking awesome.
That's the idea.
Yeah.
I mean, I, I come from the school of movies should be fun.
Yeah.
There are several, like, key scenes, key characters in this movie that are, are
most likely day
players or local hires that you had play, like, at the end.
Well, in this case, in this case, the guy who plays, uh, was actually Joaquin
Standen.
Oh, and there's some comfortability there.
Well, there's some comfort, but I, but he had no idea that I was going to,
because there
was no in the script and it was, it was, it was basically that morning that Joaquin
and
I were like, we, yeah, that's what I was going to ask was like, was that in the
script or was
that kind of like, no, no, it just sort of occurred to us.
It's like, actually, I don't think and then, and then, you know, it wasn't long
before I
was telling Blaine, you know, who, who's the stand.
And I said, Blaine, so you're going to be dragging Joaquin and, you know, you're
going
to have to hit him.
Well, I'm so excited to know you as a person and consider you a friend, because
I do think
you're like, there's not too many name brand directors do it, you know, making
original
things that I don't, there's very few.
So you're on that Mount Rushmore at the moment.
I mean, you're probably going to make some duds.
Thank you.
Just like Scorsese did.
What's, what are you going to do?
New York, New York next?
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York.
