Michael Showalter Intervened with Kyle Mooney & Beck Bennett (Episode 353)

You sound like a punk rocker.
I like having fun.
I like to laugh.
I like to meet him.
Hey!
What?
Wait.
Why don't we not do the show today?
Let's push it, Doug, if you don't mind.
Let's push it to another time.
I got busy.
I suddenly got very busy and I can't do the show today.
But thank you all for tuning in.
And know that we're here for you.
But we'll just push this.
Got busy just now?
I got a VO opportunity.
They're redoing.
I got a VO opportunity.
Thank you, everybody, for tuning in.
But I got a VO opportunity.
It needs to be done now.
They want me to come in because this movie already came out.
Huh?
The Smurfs came out and there was a problem with one of the voice actors.
Some of his off-camera stuff got out there.
So they want a new voice in there before it goes to digital.
They've got to be able to wait two hours.
Are you going to be Gargamel?
I can't say.
And I did a quick NDA, a digital signature.
Oh.
Adobe Acrobat.
Thank you, everybody, for tuning in.
And next time we'll try to have our guests on.
We'll have the same guests on, hopefully, if we can get them.
But apparently he's going to be out of town.
So I don't know.
All right.
I'd like to see an Adobe Acrobat.
He does like a flip-flop handspring over to Photoshop.
And then he's bouncing over here.
Over on top of some Mud Hut.
On top of a Mud Hut.
And then he goes over to After Effects.
And then he's like, does the back flip back over?
All right.
No, we'll do the show.
What the hell?
I'll tell these fuckers to, they have to wait.
Wait till lunch.
Wait till afternoon.
And I'm good.
I'm yours.
I'm all yours all afternoon.
And we'll redo the vocal stuff, the VO.
So let's welcome DJ Doug Pound to the show.
Oh, good morning.
Oh.
And Victor Berger IV.
What's the virgin?
What sip, everybody?
I, you know, Dr. James Dobson died.
Did you hear about that?
Who that?
The Focus on the Family Guy.
Oh, right.
He just died.
So I wanted to do a 21 sip salute to James.
Everybody lift your cup.
James Dobson.
John Dobson.
He was anti-gay.
You know, not a good dude, apparently.
I don't know about these 21 sips.
I know.
But let's just do it for his family.
Let's focus on his family a little bit.
21 sips?
21.
Rody.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9.
Can't do it.
All right, 21.
21 sips.
Oh, boy.
Thank you, James.
Quick show, quick announcements.
It is Thursday night.
It is.
It is Thursday, August 21st at 10.06 a.m.
Very hot here.
Very, very hot here in the Southland.
But tonight, cool off with us and the very good band, DJ Doug Pound and Neil
Hamburger at
the Lodge Room in Highland Park.
Doors open at 7.
Show begins at 8.
Tickets are available.
Come on down.
We're going to have a great time.
Cool, man.
Yes.
And with us in the studio today for the entire show, we hope, is two guys.
One guy has been on the show a lot.
It's a little, I would say, we've, no surprise here.
He's back.
And I'm always thinking of Matt.
Like, Matt, we got to think outside the box a little bit with our guests
because it feels
like we're doubling up on stuff, but that's okay.
He's got something to promote, so we're happy to have him.
But more importantly, and kind of a bigger deal, Superman himself, Beck Bennett,
is here.
Thank you.
And, oh, I say Kyle Mooney as well.
Yeah, thank you so much.
It's great to be here.
Yeah, Superman was really fun.
It was a really exciting movie.
Biggest movie.
One of the biggest movies out there.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And you were playing in that movie, Jimmy, not Jimmy Olsen.
Jimmy Olsen's co-worker, Steve Lombard.
Yeah, one of the big, big guy in the comics.
Yeah, big in the movie too.
Okay.
Yeah, I had an improvised line in there, so that's really cool.
Okay, well, and he did the whole red carpet and everything?
Absolutely.
Cool.
Yeah, yeah, red carpet, dressed up, took photos, did interviews with.
And who's the Superman this time?
Who's doing Superman in the movie, the actor?
David Cornswet.
Okay.
Yeah.
Look him up, Vic.
Find out what else he's done.
He's a really amazing guy.
Went to Juilliard.
Really?
Yeah, was in the movie Pearl, Twister.
He's a really nice-looking guy.
Yeah, nice-looking guy.
How was he on set, though?
Really nice, too.
He made me feel very safe.
Big guys like that have the capability to make you feel really good.
Cornswet?
Cornswet.
That's what I get at the movie theater when I'm eating that.
You have too much popcorn.
Popcorn.
And you're not still promoting your tour, are you, with the music and
everything?
Oh, thank you for bringing that up.
I'm actually still, I have two more shows, one in L.A. on the 24th and one in
28th.
Sorry, sorry to interrupt.
Oh, no, I'll do it.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah, Superman's good.
There he is.
Yeah.
Is that your era?
That doesn't look like your era.
No, we were actually, because that's, I think, yeah, this is probably early 90s,
I would think.
Looks like Phil Hartman and Jerry Steinfeld.
Yeah, yeah.
That's not us, but it does kind of look like us.
It's called corn.
Corn.
Hello!
It's so hot in here, I don't know what I'm going to do all day here.
Yeah, I haven't got a flannel shirt on.
Yeah, not smart.
Not smart.
But you guys are-
But I can take it off anytime I want, right?
You guys are announcing a new TV show, is that correct?
Because you guys are back together again after all these years, a new TV show?
Yeah, no, it's actually-
Peacock.
Is it Peacock or what is it?
No, it's a podcast.
It's called What's Our Podcast?
It's on HeadGum, and it's been really fun sort of reconnecting with my old bud.
Yeah, just goofing around and having fun.
The whole premise is we don't know what our podcast should be about, so we have
guests come in and pitch us ideas for what they think the podcast should be.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and then we try it out.
We go into a different studio and we see what that feels like.
All right.
If you want to check out-
We have your trailer.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, you guys made a whole trailer for a podcast?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Interesting.
Can we see that?
What is so interesting about that?
What?
What is so interesting about that?
For me, it was just like you-
Like me or Maren or anybody like that, you just kind of start doing it and don't
make-
Sure.
It's mostly about-
It's not all the bells and whistles needed because it's just a podcast.
It's just about getting awareness.
You know, there's so much material out there.
Just trying to get people aware.
Yeah, you need visuals now.
You need to put it out there.
It's sort of a visual medium now.
It's just as much as-
Interesting.
So, okay.
Well, let's take a look at the trailer.
Are you mad?
I'm not mad.
Okay.
Hey, I'm Kyle Mooney.
What's going down?
I'm back.
Bennett.
Great.
We've known each other for quite a long time.
Remember those old days back?
Oh, yeah, I do remember those old days.
It's fed up.
We've made some fun stuff together.
Yeah, we've also been working together for quite a long time, too.
I'm still a motherfucker.
Did you put it on 1.5?
I'm excited to tell you that.
I didn't tell you that.
It's a podcast.
It's just called what?
It's our podcast.
We don't know what our podcast is about.
We got it.
So, you have a podcast coming out.
All right, great.
No, no, no.
I don't understand why you do that shit.
What is that?
What is the speed it up?
Is this a bit?
They have technical difficulties a lot.
Sure.
Play it at regular speed if you really need people to see it.
Yeah.
I'm actually a little, I am a little pissed because.
Oh, no.
What I understood that, Matt told me that you guys were coming on here to
announce the podcast.
Matt was wrong.
Okay.
Because Vulture had the exclusive announcement.
They did, okay.
Yeah, they paid for that.
This is the first live, this is like the first in-person live conversation.
Right.
I just thought we were kind of getting a scoop on the podcast.
And then I saw this morning that you already posted this little video.
Okay.
Well, this is the first podcast that we're going on to talk about the trailer.
Okay.
That's, I guess I interpreted that to be this is the, this is where the break,
this is where
the news is breaking, but we got scooped by Vulture, who I have big problems
with, by the
way, and you shouldn't be dealing with them.
Oh, okay.
I mean, we could.
Obviously, the cat's out of the bag, and there's no way to put it back in, but
whatever.
Yeah.
Got a lot of podcasts.
You okay?
This week.
Am I good?
Yeah, you okay?
Oh, no, no, no, yeah, no, I'm fine.
Sorry, a little bored.
You got bored?
Let's go, let's keep going.
Yeah, all right.
Doug, anything?
Got a lot of podcasts coming this week.
I like to think about the podcast as like a train, and then it's leaving the
station,
and there's you two go, wait, hold on, wait a minute.
That's, you like to think?
That's just what, like when I found out you're doing a podcast.
I like to think about that.
No, I don't like the, it's not like that.
Oh, okay.
It seems like you were saying that you like to think about us running after a
podcast.
I literally, I literally said that.
Like you're like, there's a podcast, you like go to bed.
What is head gum?
Let's get, let's get that out of the way.
What is head gum?
Head gum is a podcast network.
Really?
Yeah, yeah.
We go there.
They, they give us a studio to do our show in and, and producers and stuff.
Yeah.
Really?
Yeah.
And you've done the podcast.
You have, you have a sense of what it is.
Yeah.
And I did do the podcast.
And thanks for having me.
Thank you.
It was awesome.
You were great.
Yeah, it was really.
I know I probably won't get any residuals or anything like that, but.
Your name did make it to the trailer.
I think we featured Tim in the promotion.
We did, you did.
I noticed that.
Slow that down.
Oh, there it is.
Oh, no, his name real quick at the end, but not in the video clip.
But you did, yeah, you showed like clips of everybody on there.
Yeah, most of the people.
They snuck you in right before Dender.
Yeah.
Right before the made up guest.
Who the hell's Dender?
Do you think you'll go on Jimmy Fallon to promote this?
If they'd have us, I mean, I just.
That would be huge to get on Fallon to, yeah.
Doing something with Beck in that sort of space would be really, really special.
Yeah.
Yeah, be back in the building where we worked for eight years.
Is the pressure on for this to connect with everybody?
Is HeadGum kind of like being like, we're putting a lot of our.
I think they have high hopes.
At the same time for Beck and I, I think it's all about just being creative,
putting stuff
out there and continue to work on stuff.
Like it's just really, it's really exciting.
And you're putting the music aside now?
That's when we're done with that?
No, and I'm so glad you asked that.
The music is never aside of as, as I, you know, I probably said on this show,
like that
is the real me.
Kyle M is who I am.
Oh yes, I saw that there was like some clarification you made online.
Can you explain this?
Because I was honestly like lost when I was listening to you.
Very confusing.
Thank you, Beck.
I just, you know, I've been going by Kyle M.
I don't know, you're looking at me.
I'm sorry, I was looking at you.
Matt and I just made eye contact and it was very weird.
I have a weird eye line with Beck.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, okay.
Wait, is he, okay.
Anyway, yeah, you know, I was, I've been, I put out the real me and I've been
sort of
focused on the music, but now I've decided to open myself up to sort of being
Kyle Mooney
again.
And I'm doing it with one of my old buddies.
We're putting out the podcast.
I'm hoping to try out a bunch of new things.
And Beck, what was that like for you when he was going through that whole music
phase?
Like, was it sort of uncomfortable for you to kind of put on that?
Yeah.
Nice work, buddy.
Yeah, it was.
Because it was like the whole time I'd been working with him.
It was kind of like, well, who, who were you then?
Were we not really actually connecting?
Who was I connecting with?
Was it like, almost like multiple personality disorder?
Right, right, right, like where we act, is our friendship real?
But, but no, he like, I
