We Won an Award! Cass McCombs, Delco Historical Society (Episode 356)

What the fucking kind of Brick is this?
I like jazz.
Good morning Vietnam and the United States and the United Kingdom and France
and Spain
and everywhere.
Name a city, Doug.
Get it?
Name a country, Doug.
Oh, Spania.
Spain, give me a country, Matt.
Not Lithuania.
Give me a country, Carson.
Russia.
Okay.
We are live here.
It is September.
Oh, my Robin Williams voice.
Let me get it.
Oh, boy.
You stepped in it already.
Oh, big time.
Oh, fuck.
September 11th, a day which will live in Infamain.
No question about it.
Part of my history.
It's now part of American history.
Terrible day.
And it just, it's, we're not going to dwell on it.
We're not going to dwell on darkness today.
Terrible, terrible times we're living in.
Terrible things have been happening.
They happen every fucking day.
And I don't know what to tell you except what Billy Corgan once said.
From the wise words of Billy Corgan, the world is a vampire.
Am I wrong?
Is he wrong?
Did he say that on his podcast?
The Rotten Ones?
No, The Magnificent Ones.
Are you being facetious calling it The Rotten Ones?
I forgot the name.
Apparently he has Devo on there today.
He gets a lot of good guesses.
All right.
We're not here to talk about Billy Corgan's podcast.
I apologize.
I know you, I know you know that.
The, I thought it was, I really thought it was called The Rotten Ones.
I really did.
Sorry, my bad.
Sorry, Billy.
Yeah, he had, he had Mary Lou Henner on there from Taxi, which everybody was
waiting for.
Finally, the sit down.
Really?
The sit down interview with Mary Lou Henner.
But Mary Lou Henner is interesting.
You know about her, right?
No.
Please tell us.
She has photographic memory.
Oh.
So she can remember every single thing that's ever happened to her.
Remember like when, on what date.
I didn't watch the interview, naturally.
But there was one clip and she was, and he was like, he brought up his song,
1979.
Great song.
She's like, I remember September 23rd, 1999, when that song came out.
Really?
He's like, okay.
Wait, she said this?
No.
Doug, I have a question for you before I turn to you.
Do you think you'll remember me?
When?
Well, like down the line, in years to come, say something should happen to me.
Do you think you'll remember me?
Hmm.
I like jazz.
Yeah, probably.
Okay.
Knock, knock.
Of course.
Can I just, can I finish?
Can I finish?
For 20 years, you think I'm going to forget?
Can I finish?
Okay.
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
I thought you'd remember me.
You know who told me that joke?
My son.
I don't do drawings of women.
Yesterday.
I said, that's a good one, bud.
What do you think?
Do you like it?
I do the best.
Well, I don't like the dark beginning of it.
Your son's got a good dark mind that I like.
Yeah, well, his friend told it to him.
Okay.
So you got to blame the friend, not my son.
Anyways, let me kick it over to DJ Doug Pound.
DJ Doug Pound.
Oh, uh, good horning.
And in the Vic chair, Vic wrote us this morning with some terrible news.
And I think it's fair to say, we can quote Vic here, saying that I ate a bad
burrito in
little Tokyo.
I ate them eggs.
Oh, is that him?
Is that him live?
I think Vic's dad poisoned him.
Oh, there's Vic live?
Hey.
What is this?
Are you in the toilet?
He's in a pool.
He's in his outdoor commode.
Is your toilet three feet deep?
It's got one of those extra deep toilets.
He's got a sit-in toilet.
He'd get fully in it.
Wait.
What the hell?
I think we got swindled.
Dude, don't you see those signs at pools that say, if you have recently had
diarrhea, you're
not allowed to go in those pools?
Yeah.
It doesn't say how recent, though.
Well, what was the last time you emitted diarrhea?
Oh, that seems pretty recent.
But it's not two minutes ago.
But my building, I just found out the water is off at the building, so I can't
flush.
No.
Yeah.
Are you just piling up wet?
Yeah.
Wet brown?
I got to go to like a McDonald's or a Starbucks or something to release.
I'm also going to hear my back hurts.
There's a lot of bad stuff going on in the world.
But I came out.
Yeah.
I'm sorry you're not here.
What's his name?
Carson's behind me.
Here's Johnny.
What's up, everybody?
Oh, interesting.
Whoa.
And we tried getting a hold of Sharpling.
We asked Tom Sharpling to come in and permanently take the seat, but we couldn't
get a hold of him.
Oh, that's okay.
That's all right.
You do have some big news.
We want to get to this big news right away, Vic.
Yeah.
What happened this weekend?
So my, yeah, my, um, my mommy and daddy, they, they, uh, flew into, to Las
Vegas.
Right.
And I said, uh, you know, they were staying at the Flamingo and I looked at
like what's happening at the Flamingo and Mr. Las Vegas was performing there.
Wayne Newton, everybody is, uh, he's, he does it like a regular show.
They're a little cabaret style kind of thing.
And I got my daddy and mommy tickets and I got some updates for my dad.
So if you want to check out the videos now, you got those.
So this is a video from Vic Berger III experiencing, now are we allowed to show
this?
I mean, I guess we will anyway, but this is exclusive Wayne Newton footage from
his show.
This is fresh.
This is fresh.
From last night.
From last night.
Uh-huh.
What do we have here?
Look how close they are.
We'll be right back.
Uh, Four Seasons guy.
Who's that guy?
No, he's a, he's young.
He's young at heart.
What's that video?
We don't have the other one that were the spittles coming out of his mouth.
Oh yeah, that was on there.
That's, uh, I mean, there's, I got so many videos.
We have another one there, Matt.
Yeah, that might be, it might be in this one.
Let's see this one.
Oh, is this the intro?
So this is like the Jerry, uh, the Jerry Lewis kind of part where he shows
clips.
Sure.
So you get to see.
That's what I got to do, a live show where most of it is just me showing clips.
So he's watching his, his younger self perform?
Yeah, he's watching.
Yeah.
Oh, look what I can do.
See, here we go.
Wait, why is his violin on fire?
Say that.
Dust.
Dust.
Whoa.
Wow.
I'm into that.
There he goes.
Wow.
By the way, I hate your dad that he's just filming all this.
I know, I know.
I got almost the whole show.
Yeah.
Vic, Berger, the third, put your phone down, enjoy the show.
I know.
Put one of them down at least.
Yeah, really.
All right.
True.
All right.
Maybe we'll check in with you later.
Maybe we won't.
We don't know.
All right.
All right.
Feel better.
Yeah, I'm sorry.
Enjoy your sit-in bidet.
All right.
I will.
I will.
Thank you, guys.
Can we get a full dunk?
Oh, yeah.
Why not?
You ready?
Yep.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Oh, I'm trying to take my ear thing out.
All right.
Thank you.
Oh, shit.
Oh, no.
Sorry, Vic.
He's ruined it.
The fucking guy is insane, y'all.
Insane, y'all.
Bad Burrito in Little Tokyo.
Some kind of Kurt Russell movie.
What else, Matt?
We got it.
Should we take a call?
Zoom.
We've got the great Cass McCombs on the show today.
A lot of folks want to talk to him, but you got to wait.
Right.
Wait till the second half, right?
How is this M&M's controversy I wanted to talk about?
Oh, yeah.
That's something.
It's been a big news day the last couple of days.
At the top of the list is the M&M's.
But I'll take a Zoom, and then we'll talk about this M&M's deal.
And we have rat news.
I know Vic's not here, but we will be getting to our rat news.
I apologize for the delay on that.
Nice.
What do we want to talk to Tiara?
I mean, this is also, this is, there's more, this is actual bad news from Tiara,
but it's
not, you know, we could talk about it.
She wants to talk about it.
No bad news today.
No more bad news.
Well, how about make it a tribute?
Make it a tribute.
I don't have any bad news.
I just have a question.
Okay.
Hi again, Tim.
So I saw you were posting about Mark Bowman, aka Flo.
I have it in my notes.
I just have it.
I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I...
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry to interrupt you.
I wanted to say, I wanted to be honest with you.
Sorry, it's great to get up here.
Excuse me.
I know there's a leg.
I wanted to say something.
All I wanted to say was this, and then I'll give you the floor.
I have it, I have the two words Mark Bowman in my notes today, but go ahead,
continue.
I'm sorry.
I just wanted to know if you're like a fan of his work with like, you know, Zappa's
mothers,
and then my follow-up is what you think of Zappa's music, not like him, just
like a guy.
How long have you been listening to this show?
Yes.
Not very long.
Okay, fair enough.
It was not meant to be a snark.
I'm at work.
I have to work.
I'm...
Hey, look.
What's your name?
I'm a working class slob, Tim.
What's your name?
Easy now.
No, you're a nice person.
What's your name?
Tiare.
Tiare.
Tiare, what are you just making up letters?
Yes.
Tiare, XQP.
What the hell?
What's your name?
Like, Chad?
I didn't mean to be...
I'm trying not to be snarky with you.
I'm trying not...
I'm trying to be respectful.
And I was genuinely asking how long you've been listening to the show because I
am fairly...
On and off.
I'm fairly vocal in my dislike, disdain for the music of Frank Zappa.
I do like him.
I do like listening to him talk.
I like the book he wrote.
I like things about him.
That book was terrible.
He's an idiot.
I do like some of their songs.
You like his parenting?
I don't know.
Maybe I don't know anything anymore.
I like how he names his children.
No.
I want to read his daughter's book.
His kids.
Jesus Christ.
Get the fuck out of here.
If it makes you feel better, I like the Mothers of Invention.
They're awesome.
The one...
The album that looks like Sergeant Pepper.
You have a lot of episodes and two, I have a job.
I have to go through...
I have to force you every episode to find your opinions on stuff.
All right.
I will put out an opinion sheet.
It's easier to just ask you to do it.
I will put out my top 20 opinions about Zappa and Ozzy and everybody.
But listen, you asked me about Mark Vollman.
I want to speak about him for two seconds here.
Right.
Mark Vollman is one of the co-founders of the Turtles.
I loved him in 200 Milks.
Oh, my God.
T-R-E.
Ah, what am I going to do with you?
Let me just say, he was the co-founder of the damn Turtles.
Okay.
I can't take you, do-ba-do-na-di-ba-d-wa.
What a great song.
One of the greats.
Love and nobody but you.
What about Eleanor?
Singing backup with Mark Vollman, right?
They're all over T-Rex.
Yeah, and then Flo and Eddie's cool.
I don't really know what the connection between Zappa and him is.
Yeah, he was so good.
Electric Warrior was awesome.
He was in the Mothers?
They were, yeah.
Flo and Eddie.
Okay.
Magnificent, Flo and Eddie.
Yeah.
And then I, a couple years ago, not to all-
You should listen to their version of Happy Together.
Okay.
He also discovered, I don't know if he discovered, but he was a big champion of
one of my favorite
artists of all time, Judy Sill.
Anything there?
Anything there?
Just giving you the platform to speak?
No?
Yes, it was back.
Okay.
Uh, and then a few years ago-
Whoa!
Whoa!
If you don't know Judy Sill, I'm telling you, you're missing out on something
wonderful.
Who's Judy Sill?
Just look it up.
J-U-D-E-E.
That's what's confusing for people.
Come on.
Judy Sill.
Come on.
Oh, that's the problem.
I know.
Come on.
The kid, the song-
Unbelievable.
I could sit here.
You want me to do the fucking show where I just sit here and listen to Judy Sill?
I'll do it.
And you'll love it.
Do it.
Fucking A.
Do it.
Fucking do it, Tim.
Here, let me just finish my thoughts.
A couple years ago-
Oh, go on.
Doug, between you and her, I'm just-
A couple years ago, Volman himself and I were communicating on the DM, and we
were-
He liked a bunch of stuff I was doing, and it made sense, you know?
It seemed like we, you know, come from the same school of thought or something.
Any sexy pics?
Jared?
Between me and Mark Volman from the Turtles?
Yeah.
Why not?
No.
Maybe he'll show you his turtle.
They were into some nasty business.
I read the other guy's autobiography.
A turtle guy?
Yeah.
What do you mean nasty business
