Talking Buttholes & Shingles with Tom Stern, Megan Koester (Episode 357)

I am stuck on Band-Aid Brand.
I like having fun.
I like to laugh.
Hey, good morning, everybody.
It's Office Hours Live, September 18th, 10.04 in the morning here on the
Pacific Time Zone in Glendale, California,
where it feels a little bit like, I don't know, Miami or something out there.
It's muggy, and we had a little bit of rain, and we're loving it.
We feel good to get a little hydration in the air, and we're going to be
monitoring that closely throughout the day.
We expect the rain to taper off, just like the BM that came out of my ass this
morning tapered off and dropped into the water.
Got a splash here, maybe?
Yeah, that's not the idea.
Tapered, that's the word of it.
Tapered, yeah.
I don't know if I have a splash.
All right, well, I couldn't find it in time.
Vic doesn't, his shits don't taper.
They come out as pure liquid.
Unlike George Brett.
It's advanced.
Much like one of the band members in the documentary I watched yesterday, but
we'll get to that later.
Because I want to introduce my co-host, sitting in the dug chair today, back
after a long time away.
What a long, strange trip it's been.
It's been, many people thought maybe someone behind me passed away, or had been
canceled, or had been banned.
The cancellations only made me stronger.
She's back, and there's nothing I could do about it.
I'm forced into this situation, into this position, and I will accept my
punishment.
Megan Keister, great to see you.
Hello, internet.
And we're actually now broadcasting on ABC.
For how long?
Who knows?
Victor Berger IV is back from his stint.
I'm still here.
Loaded up with Imodium.
Uh-huh.
It's all dried up.
Whatever it takes to keep it all inside the gut.
I love it all in there.
I keep it in there.
But I've been safe for a few days, so I'm okay right now.
I'm not contagious.
What's up, everybody?
Where's my glugs?
Oh, my God.
He's off.
I don't have everything.
I know.
Tom Sharpling, come help.
I know.
Tom, if you're watching, please, I need you.
Blow it.
I need a full revamp of the men behind me.
And they can be women in a lot of ways, too.
True.
Matt Carlin, dressed and cosplaying as me today with his blue polo.
Pretty cool.
Hey, check this out.
I'm a Hollywood insider.
That's right.
Matt was my special guest last night.
Pretty cool stuff.
Look at that ticket.
The big premiere.
I wonder what that goes for on eBay.
Ooh.
That's insane.
Do you want me to look?
Why don't you start looking up?
Yeah, I'll look.
Check it out.
That can't be very much.
And also with us, very special guest, two special guests, but I'm going to
introduce the
one that's unannounced and then the actual guest, so you can follow this.
We run a pretty professional show here, so we're going to do this the right way
according
to standards and practices set up by the FCC.
Because we have to do things right.
And now I'm blanking on everything.
No, I'm just kidding.
I am very sleep-deprived, folks.
Let's just remember that I was at a big premiere, a lot of cocaine.
First time I've done cocaine last night, and it kept me up all night.
Weird.
Might have Fent in it.
I did.
There might have been.
Might have been a tittle of Fent.
Did you find yourself in a bin?
No, but I'm wondering it because you think I would have passed out if it had Fent
in it.
That's why you're tired.
No, I think it perks you up.
Oh, it does.
I thought it's a thing that puts you to sleep.
Anyways, Abigail Whitney's here, and people are going, huh, who?
Well, then you're an idiot, because Abigail, first of all, brought us cookies,
so we're
going to be eating through the whole show.
And you should be honoring and respecting Abigail, because she is a long-time
costume designer
for all the crazy things I do, including on cinema, and does tremendous work.
Very talented.
And also, let me say, one of the spiritual guiding lights of the show.
I think you've been on every season, except maybe the first one or something.
No, I think I've been the whole time.
Every 16th.
Well, season 16's coming out October 1st on High Network.
And yes, you've been there.
You're always there to check in and say, like, you know, laughing or not
laughing.
It's my life's work.
Yes.
So, big part of the family.
But our actual guest, and you're just coming to hang out.
Yeah.
Happy to have you here.
And our actual guest is sitting over here, in my eyeline, Tom Stern.
Howard Stern's uncle?
Yes.
Yes.
Your uncle.
No.
No.
What's your deal, Tom?
Because you are a writer, creator.
You've done a lot of...
Yeah.
You've done...
Writer, director, you know.
I worked for Jimmy Kimmel for 10 years.
Well, this was kismet, because you were booked on the show weeks ago, or
whatever, to talk
about your documentary, The Butthole Surfers.
And it's not called The Butthole Surfers, but it's about The Butthole Surfers.
Butthole Surfers, The Whole Truth and Nothing But.
B-U-T-T.
Yes.
And H-O-L-E.
Right.
Which we will talk about.
I watched it yesterday.
Honestly, you put me up to a lie detector.
I can tell you, I did.
Watch it.
And I thought it was great.
Thank you.
Unfortunately, I don't think it's available.
Well, it's going to be premiering in L.A. at the Beyond Fest on Tuesday.
Oh, perfect.
Oh, that's a great festival.
At the Egyptian Theater.
Oh, yeah.
We did Mr. America there.
Yeah.
And the whole band is going to be in attendance.
Oh, shit.
Whoa.
And, you know, there might be a little surprise, even.
I don't know about that.
Because we have the whole band and we have electricity.
Whoa.
That usually goes together nicely, like cookies and milk.
Yes.
Sick.
But, yes, we didn't realize that.
Well, I put it together.
I was like, oh, I bet Tom has a relationship with Jimmy or I'm sure it's a good
relationship.
I do.
Yeah.
Have you been in touch?
Well, not since the event.
No.
The events of last night.
Insane, right?
Your quick take.
A positive thing for comedy or?
No.
My hot take is that it's not good for comedy or the United States of America.
I mean, it's fucking horrible.
It's fucking shocking.
It's horrifying.
What was that, Donald?
Wait, we have an opposing view on this?
Wrong.
What?
Wrong.
Oh.
No, it's fucked up.
I mean, it's fucked up.
Thank you.
Yes, I agree.
The FCC, this rat, what's his name?
Carr, Brandon Carr, some lunatic.
This guy is bad news.
This was like out of Goodfellas.
He says something like that the ABC could do this the easy way or the hard way.
That's right.
Who talks like that?
Brandon Carr.
Fascists.
Brandon Carr does.
Fascists.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely shocking.
And it's like I went and looked at what Jimmy said.
Just look at him.
Rat.
Shiny head.
He's more bird-like than rat-like, let's be honest.
Looks like what?
He's more bird-like than rat-like.
He's a bird boy.
He's got the droopy mouth that Trump had recently.
Maybe they have all had strokes.
We don't know.
We'll get Dr. Oz on that.
But what Jimmy said was so sort of not.
Nothing.
It was nothing.
It was nothing.
It wasn't about Charlie Kirk.
I mean, it was.
No.
It seemed actually really nice.
Like as nice as you could be.
Bring up your mic a little bit.
I don't know.
Previously you said the nice stuff.
It was kind of an innocuous thing about how the MAGA is trying to distance
themselves from the past of the shooter.
Because, you know, at the time nobody knew what was going on with this kid.
And he seemed all over the place.
But he had these MAGA parents and gun-loving parents and stuff.
And it turns out that he's, you know, he's got this relationship with a trans
person.
He might be bi-
Who cares?
Yeah.
Who cares what, you know, the details of his life.
And the whole thing is nuts.
Yeah.
He's bad.
He's, you know, the kid's messed up.
He's fucked up.
But what Jimmy was just saying was kind of like, yeah, some of these ghouls on
the right are using, you know, trying to, you know, take whatever they can to
make it.
It's like a kind of an off, like a, just an off hand rock to get to a joke
about Trump talking about the construction of the ballroom, which was just
really funny.
Yeah.
I don't, I mean, it's just like a joke that-
He's on to the construction stage of grief.
They say, sorry about the loss of your friend.
He goes, yeah, it's terrible, but look at all these, the bulldozers are
starting on the ballroom.
Like, this is a whack joke.
He didn't even say it's terrible.
Right.
They're like, how are you feeling?
Oh, feeling good.
He's like, good, great, great.
Look at the trucks.
Look at the trucks.
He was dancing at the Yankees game the night before, the day, like, yeah, doing
his thing.
Anyways, and listen, you know, I'm very open on this show, these late night
shows.
There is a, like, they're not, they have a feeling of, like, the inevitable
winding down
of that as a medium, but the way this is going is very spooky.
Yeah.
It's very spooky, and I can't wait for all the, you know, Tim Pools and the,
who are the other
people, Vic, Joe Rogan's and Theo Vaughn's and Andrew Schultz, they're going to
come out
and say, this is censorship.
Yeah.
They have to.
Yeah.
Otherwise, they'll be hypocrites.
I really don't.
And I don't see that happening.
I don't see these guys taking a hypocritical stance.
Megan, your thoughts?
I'm starting to think, this Trump guy, I might not vote for him next time.
He's really getting on my last nerves.
Well, I definitely regret my vote.
Yeah.
He lost my, he just lost my vote.
I'm going to write in Joseph China Biden.
China virus.
China virus Biden.
Yeah.
It's, it's, it's, it's fucked up.
But Jimmy, as you, I mean, I know him a little bit.
Yeah.
He's always been very nice to me and Eric and I, me, Eric and I.
Like a good guy.
Yeah.
Pretty good guy.
But they're treating him like he's this monster.
You must know him to be a good, he's like.
He's a good guy.
Right.
I know him to be a good guy.
I mean, I worked for him for a long time.
What were you doing with him?
Well, I directed, I directed for The Man Show.
I directed for Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Well, I'm sure Adam Carolla is going to come out with a statement of support.
Oh, God.
Well, I would hope so.
But, and then I ran some shows for him.
The Andy Milonakis Show.
Oh, right.
And Crank Anchors.
Oh, right.
And I created a show for Comedy Central called Wanderlust, which was a travel
show, a fake travel show.
What was that company called?
It's not worldwide chance.
No, Jack Hole.
Jack Hole, right.
Jack Hole.
Not to be confused with Jackass.
Yes.
Another company.
I am so confused.
And did you have something to do with Windy City Heat?
I did.
Yes.
I was.
You can be honest with us.
And you know what?
They're talking to Perry about stepping in for Jimmy.
Oh, my gosh.
That I would watch.
Yeah.
Yeah.
One man for the job.
I mean, that's...
I was Yergi.
I was in the cast.
I was the Romanian gangster who financed the film when the Japanese money fell
out.
It's one of the funniest movies ever made.
Although it's challenged now.
It's a little bit hard to watch now.
Yeah.
But that doesn't mean that when I did watch it, it wasn't the greatest
experience of it.
You know what?
We watched it in Jimmy's dressing room at J.K.L.
The first cut, which was like...
Ooh, J.K.L.
That's cool.
What are you, SNL?
Well, that's what we called it.
Does that...
Maybe that never made the jump to...
No, it never did.
It never did.
It's not in this one.
They tried.
We tried.
We were all like, J.K.L.
J.K.L.
J.K.L.
Wasn't the original thing...
Sorry to interrupt, but the original thing with that show that it was actually
live.
Yes.
We kind of dropped that.
Well, somebody barfed.
Oh, really?
Yeah.
On the first night.
Because, like, Daniel Kellison, the producer...
Yeah, the great Daniel Kellison.
...had learned from the band show that when you get the audience drunk, it
helps.
Sure, yeah.
Lube it up.
So the pitch was, yeah, it's live and we're serving cocktails, right?
Yeah.
So on the very first night, some woman puked all over the place.
Oh, my God.
That's all the more reason to keep it live.
I know.
Why would you...
You know, that would have been the smart move.
Disney, Disney.
Get a s
