We have with us the former senator of Massachusetts and vice, not vice
president,
secretary of state, presidential candidate, former senator John Kerry.
John, Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Kerry.
Let liberty ring.
Hello, hello there.
What?
Sorry, Mac, we're waiting on John Kerry, I believe.
Hi, it's him. Hi, it's John Kerry.
Oh, wait a minute, no, this is Joe Kerry.
This is actor, Joe, actor, musician, Joe Kerry.
I get this all the time.
I'm so sorry, Joe.
Somebody said that we're getting John Kerry, but this is even better.
I didn't want to, I'll be honest with you, I was a little nervous talking to
John Kerry,
but I know Joe Kerry, so this is.
He can be, he can be a bit, he can be a bit.
Dry.
Sorry, I'm sorry, what is Joe's plan for getting out of Iraq, though?
Well, I don't think he has one, I don't know.
Mine?
Yeah.
Well, that's why I came on here, yeah.
What do you have for me, Joe?
I want to get, well, I think this is easy, we just got to get the hell out of
there, right now.
Shut her down.
I like it.
Shut her down.
Joe, thank you so much for being here.
I know this was the top of your list for your Stranger Things promotional tour.
Of course, I've been saying this from the beginning, from the beginning, and
thanks for finally finding, I know, you know, you had to move a lot of people
around and we had to push John, but thank you for having me.
Do you do promotion for that show or is that just sort of like on its own, like
you don't even need to, you don't even need to go around and do Jimmy Fallon
and those kind of things?
I mean, I don't think you need to do anything.
I think enough people know what is going on where you don't, you wouldn't have
to do anything.
They send you around.
My daughter is nuts for that.
I mean, I've told you this, and you were so gracious when we worked together a
couple of years ago that you made a little video for her or something.
But they're watching this finale in the movie theaters on New Year's Day.
Yeah, it's pretty cool that they're doing that, I think.
Oh.
Watch parties.
I mean, she's like, it's been a negative, a negative impact on her, in my
opinion.
Yeah, it is.
All right, stop it.
I'm trying to talk to a big celebrity guest.
Oh, I love this.
Dr. Steve Bruhl and Steve Harrington.
Yeah, definitely.
I'm all for that.
Do you have a Juggalos hat on, sir?
Yeah, I got this hat at a church sale for two bucks.
What is that?
It's probably got lice in it.
Juggalo logo.
Rabbit V Hatch-A-Bam.
Yeah, little holiday lice.
Can I say something to you that I think it's incredible that your performance
in Pavements is not more at the end of your list.
And I hate when people do it, because it's ultimately an insult for me to bring
up that.
But it's amazing.
Why don't you jump on stage like Kanye, Tim, and complain?
I will.
Yeah, that was, I don't know.
How did you get into that whole thing?
I just saw Alex on the street in New York one day.
He was with this baby, and he was like, oh, I was just, oh, I was just thinking,
I was doing this thing.
And so he hit me up, and then like two years later, it was kind of coming
together.
But I had no idea what the whole thing was going to be about.
Did you, I mean, I had no-
Well, let me back up.
It's like, did you know Alex, or did he just come out of the blue for you?
Completely out of the blue.
I had met him.
I knew he was writing, when he was writing, I wasn't going to be in Christopher
Robin, but when he was writing that script, I like, I remember meeting him.
And then years later, this happened.
Okay.
So he wasn't just like a random guy in Greenwich Village coming up to you with
a crazy pavement concept?
One degree of that.
One degree more of that.
He was like, I had met him one time.
No, I met Alex probably through Michael Cera when I did a Q&A for a movie they
did together.
And then I ran into him at the pavement show that I think you probably were at,
at the Fonda Theater?
Yeah.
Yeah, I was there.
And he said, oh, we're doing this thing and Schwarzman's going to be, what's
his name?
I forget everybody's names, but the guy's from Matador.
And we would love you to do it.
And I said, if you can do it, if you can, yeah, sure.
They said love?
They said that we would love to have you?
Is that what they said?
Yeah.
Oh, literally.
I have a recording of it.
You wiretap all your calls, right?
But you really blew me away in that movie.
And I hope people see pavements.
Tim, could I have a minute of time to ask questions?
Vic is formally requesting the gavel.
I'm doing this on behalf of my kiddos.
They're 9 and 11.
They could not believe...
Joe very was explicit about saying, I do not want you to bring up Stranger
Things.
I know, but I'm not bringing up Stranger Things.
I'm just kidding.
I'm bringing up his music.
Oh, God.
I had no idea that it was you.
I've been listening to your album.
They always request your song.
Joe.
Oh, DJO.
Yeah, DJO.
Thanks, man.
I've been like, this is amazing.
And then they're like, oh, yeah, it's Joe from...
And I'm like, what?
So they asked me some questions.
They couldn't be here.
They were hoping to be here.
What are the questions?
Okay.
They want to know, how do you get majestical hair?
Well, you got to have good parents, you know?
So you got to have good parents.
You wear that hat.
Okay.
All right, go ahead.
Next question.
There's a lot of lights.
You know, they...
Are you friends with Benson Boone?
Never met him.
I don't know him.
I am.
One day, one day.
Actually, could you introduce me?
I don't know.
You have his number.
Yeah, we have it here.
We have it here.
How did you find out that you're going to be in Stranger Things?
Good question.
I got a call from my, at the time, agent in Chicago.
And they said, hey, you got the job, man.
Well, how hard was it to get the job?
Was it a question from Ruby?
These are the questions.
These are the questions.
I'm just asking questions.
It was kind of hard.
It was, you know, you have to audition to a lot of stuff.
And then eventually, if they like you, they'll say, yeah.
But yeah, it was hard.
And you were four years old at the time.
So you don't tell them you remember.
It was super hard to remember lines at that age.
Yeah.
The final question is, they want to know if you can be their babysitter.
Is that something you're into?
Well, that's not up to me.
Oh, that's really not up to me.
All right.
And that's it.
Okay.
Asked and answered.
Yes, got it.
Thank you for the question.
Yeah.
Your band, though.
I mean, the music is great.
Is there a competition between you and Finn, though?
Like, is it a Beatles-Stones thing?
Yeah, exactly.
It's like Beach Boys, Beatles, you know, keep hearing each other's stuff.
He's killing it, too.
I just saw his show earlier this year.
He's really doing a great job.
I wanted to see that.
They were here at the Lodge Room, I think, in L.A.
But you're, yeah, I was listening to your stuff this morning.
It's not, I don't know.
I feel like it's so annoying that we have to qualify things with people.
Like, it's actually really good.
But, no, it's like, it's great.
I get it, you know.
Yeah, I totally get it.
But you feel like you've transcended that a little bit.
Like, you're, what do you think?
You know, you're always trying to, you know, kind of.
I guess you try to do it.
But it's not for me, I guess, to decide.
You just sort of, you're a musician as well.
You kind of just do what you want to do, I guess, at a certain point.
And just sort of try to not think about it.
Were you in New York?
Are you doing stand-up at a brick wall comedy place there?
Yeah, actually, I'm taking time out of my set to do this, actually.
Were you the one, when I was shooting those couple of days,
I think it was you that we went to that improv show, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
What are those guys' names again?
You were like, oh, shit.
Wait, what were those guys?
No, maybe this wasn't me.
Oh, maybe not.
At the Comedy Cellar?
No.
Okay.
No.
You went to the, I blew it.
Oh, shit.
It's the Smothers Brothers show, right?
The Smothers Brothers.
Oh, yeah.
The Smothers.
It's Jimmy Fallon, I think.
We went to Jimmy Fallon.
We did go to the taping of Jimmy Fallon.
That's right.
That was amazing.
What a blast.
I'm curious about, have you ever been on one of these shows where that,
this Oz Perlman is on?
What's his name?
The guy that can read minds.
Why is it Oz, though?
It shouldn't be Oz?
You know this guy who-
He's like a mentalist.
The mentalist.
Yeah.
I have to say, I think there's a lot of bullshit going on with this.
You smell a rat.
I smell a rat.
Yeah.
He's not reading anyone.
I don't really get it.
I don't get how they do it.
Here's my theory.
It's a total, like everyone's in on it.
Like the people, the hosts are in on it.
The producers are in on it.
I want to debunk it.
I'm getting to the bottom of it.
Anyways, this is not your problem, Joe.
Hey, Tim, I think you also know my friend.
I was just hanging out with, you know, Lance Oppenheim.
He did-
I can't talk about that.
I can't talk about that.
Oh, yeah, of course.
Yeah, Lance is great.
Lance-
No, no, no.
Inventor of the atom bomb.
From Sperm World?
Sperm World.
Yeah, he's got the best.
Yeah, he's got the best.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's the best.
Wow.
I was telling him I was going on your show, and he just said, oh, tell him I'd
say hi.
Lance is great.
I guess you probably can't say what he's working on.
I'm sure he's working on something great right now.
He's working on like a bunch of different stuff, I think.
No, they'd have to shoot me, but I think he's so good.
Yeah.
He's got no shortage of cool things going on.
I think he's doing some, yeah, I don't know what I could say, but yeah, he's
doing a bunch
of stuff.
What do you got next?
Besides the music, you're next-
I got nothing.
You're next Superman or something like that?
I'm sure, yeah, no, no, they haven't replaced that guy quite yet.
No, I've got no plans.
I've got no plans right now.
Really?
I've got nothing going.
It's fine.
You don't have to have plans all the time.
That's why he's here.
No, I know, but his guy like, strike while the iron's hot.
I figured you'd have all sorts of offers.
Yeah, but you know how it works.
It's always like you're sort of, you never, yeah, I don't know, always looking
for something
that's cool, I guess.
I'm not quite sure.
Do you want, are you picky and choosy?
You want to do like good shit?
You want to like A24 yourself a little bit?
Like an A24 shit?
A24 myself out.
Yeah, it's probably a pretty good idea, huh?
I think so.
Let me write something for you.
Tim, absolutely.
You write something, I'll do it.
Absolutely.
Edgy character.
Office Hours, the movie, and it's just-
Who would he play?
He'd play me.
Oh, okay.
Can I be, I gotta be upset though.
I gotta, there's gotta be a real edge to it or else I can't do it.
There'll be, there'll be edge.
There'll be kind of like a little horror, a little elevated horror.
It's a king of comedy type.
It's gotta be king of comedy type.
And I think this is fair, I think this is fair territory to bring up.
This is a little inside baseball, but I connected you with my friend
and your friend, Peter Serafinowicz this week.
Yes, you did.
That's interesting.
I just talked to him the other, yeah, I just talked to him.
It's funny, I grew up watching Brian Butterfield.
Oh, yeah.
Was the huge, oh my God, that was huge for me.
So, yeah, very fun to talk to him.
I've been talking to Peter a lot more lately, and we still haven't got him on
this show.
And I think that's on my 2026, what is it called?
When you give a-
He made the short list?
No, I think he called in.
He's on the short list.
Wish list?
No, New Year's resolution.
I'm pretty sure he was on.
New Year's resolution is to get Peter Serafinowicz on this show.
Yeah, what a fun guy.
He was on already, Tim.
We have a live DOP offer on Zoom, a guy who says that he is a Joe Keery DOP.
Do you want to see a Joe Keery DOP?
Your doppelganger?
What's a DOP?
What's a DOP?
Oh, sure, yeah.
Pull him up.
Connor, present your face, Connor.
Say hello.
Is this on the-
You should see it.
You'll see it on the screen.
Oh, you've got to look for Connor, I guess.
Connor, do you think you look like Joe Keery?
Connor, do you think you look like-
Where's the hat?
I have plenty of beanies, but no, I- I've never seen it.
I don't know.
It does.
I see it.
Wait, I can't see him.
I see it.
I pinned you guys, so I can't see anyone else.
Un-unpin it.
Oh.
Connor, say hello again.
Can you send him?
Hello?
Connor, hold on.
Just keep talking, Connor.
There's too many people.
I'm going to remove pin.
Or Connor, just say check one, check two, check one.
Check one, check two.
There he is.
Oh.
Whatever.
Oh, Connor, hey.
Hey, okay.
Sure.
How's mom and dad?
Oh, great.
They're awesome.
Joe, if you're ever looking for a stand-in, you know, you can call Connor.
He could be your guy.
Nice to meet you.
All right, I'm going to let everybody go.
Not Connor.
Connor, you stay.
No.
Connor, you stay.
Hey, guys.
Crypto Dad.
What do you got?
Any plans for the holidays, Joe?
Are you a Chicago guy or a Midwest guy?
No, I'm going to go up and see John Kerry, my uncle, and the rest of my family.
He's trying to get back into politics.
He's very old.
Reporting for duty.
You know, it's funny that you say that.
When I was a kid, when he was running for president,
I made like a little, I did like a paint.
I thought I was being so clever.
A paint.
I edited his name and put my name.
Are you serious?
Put my face.
Literally, and put it all over my school.
Like, put it on all these Bolton boards as a big joke.
That's so funny.
And everyone was like, what the hell is this?
When I texted you the other day, I just, I asked you to come on the show.
And I said, I have this dumb idea that we say it's John Kerry instead of Joe
Kerry.
And you had said, like, I get that.
Oh, no, no, no, you made some reference that was like, you connected with that
joke in a way that was like, why?
That's not a first connection, Joe Kerry, John Kerry, I don't know.
Apparently it is.
I guess, yeah.
No, what are you doing for the holidays?
We'd like to know.
Yeah, I'll go to Massachusetts, see my family.
You did that same joke again.
Yeah.
Well, like I said, I'm going to say, I answered.
Unbelievable.
We're in Massachusetts, Joe.
I'm from Newburyport, Massachusetts.
Up there.
It's like North Shore.
Yeah, up there.
Yeah.
On the way to Maine.
We appreciate you.
On the way to Maine.
My daughter and Vic's whole family is going to be thrilled.
My mommy, my daddy.
I guess if you don't have Netflix, now's a good time to join and catch up on
Stranger.
Get on the ground floor of, yeah.
Someone told me that they're going to do a prequel called Strange Things.
Is that?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I haven't gotten that call yet, but they'd have to de-age me back to floor.
You're going to be playing an infant in this one.
Like the Muppet Babies.
Remember the Muppet Babies?
Oh, yeah.
David Harbour's legs.
All right, Joe.
It's going to be a challenge, and there's a lot of grit to it, so for me, it'll
be perfect
role.
Perfect role.
Okay, and for all the Gen Alphas that are tuning into the show for the first
time to see
Joe Carey, we welcome you and let you know we'll have lots of other major stars
on.
And Six, Seven, and everything else.
That's a good question.
No, and if you haven't, honestly, if you haven't seen Pavement, that's on my
top of the,
even though I'm in it, I think it's unbelievable.
No, that's not you.
Oh, yeah.
How good Joe is in that movie.
Man, Steven's the best.
He is like, what a good guy.
Did you keep in touch with him?
Like, are you going to see him when he comes through town and that kind of
thing?
Definitely, yeah.
He came to our show when we played in Chicago over the summer.
That's sweet.
Yeah, with his daughter.
It's great.
He's a good guy.
Great tennis player, too.
I mean, that's his passion, it seems like.
He's obviously...
He whipped my butt, that's for sure.
Wow.
He was a challenger.
Yeah, we played him.
We got a couple shots in there, though.
I think he was taking it easy on us, though.
No, he wasn't.
He was trying really hard.
He's so, like, tall and angular.
He's got the reach.
Yeah.
He should have been a movie star.
He could have been a movie star.
He still could.
Still could be a movie star.
I could see him taking up, like, a Noah Baumbach movie or something like that.
Oh, I was thinking James Bond is casting.
Oh, James Bond, too.
James Bond would be perfect for him.
All right.
These guys are playing tennis sound effects.
I got to go.
Okay.
Bye, Joe.
Maybe we'll have you on again next year.
Yeah, sounds good.
Bye-bye.
Bye, buddy.
Happy holidays.
Bye.
See you.
Plus, plus, plus.

Say hello.
Is
