Eric & Tim In Conversation (Ep 373)

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jim Apple.
Good morning, everybody. A beautiful thing happened 50 years ago. It was a
miracle, actually. Kay and Rich Heidecker birthed a baby boy named Tim Richard,
a.k.a. Dick. Heidecker.
In a little steel mill town called Allentown, Pennsylvania. Music was his first
love. He absorbed all the classic rock music of the 60s like the Beatles and
Kenny Loggins. He was also a religious boy, a good Catholic boy, and he was
voted number one singer in his Catholic church by Priest Daniels.
In 1994, everything changed when Tim met his future comedy life partner, Eric
Wareheimer at Temple University in Philadelphia.
The two young men learned how to make janky, unprofessional art films and how
to perform. And then because the equipment there was from 1981 and they didn't
know any other actors.
But that creative partnership continued after graduation with the absurdist
videos that were perfect for the early days of Internet video, that's pre-YouTube,
everybody.
And Napster. I think Napster was around.
Pretty soon they became Tim and Eric dot com, the iconic comedy duo.
And then when West Hollywood legend Bob Odenkirk took notice of their self-produced
DVD of sketches, they were soon on the plane to Los Angeles to make their first
TV show.
A cartoon called Tom Goes to the Mayor, which Tim starred in and wrote and
directed and produced.
The next two decades brought more Tim and Eric TV shows like Tim and Eric
Awesome Show, Great Job, Bedtime Stories, a feature film, Live Tours, a
production company called Absolutely, Internet Hits, commercials like Purple
Mattress.
You ever see Totino's?
And we also produced hits like Nathan Fielder's Nathan For You.
Check it out with Dr. Steve Bruhl and Comedy Bing Bang.
Now, their influence can be seen in pop culture all around the world to this
day.
Did you know that there's a billboard in Brazil of me doing the head explosion?
That exists.
And the free real estate meme wouldn't exist without Tim Heidecker, the
birthday boy.
There's even an alcoholic drink called Spaghet.
Ridiculous.
Their notoriety even brought more malicious Internet rumors, like a ridiculous
sitcom called Beef House,
that people think we made.
It's bullshit.
We didn't shoot it.
We didn't start it.
Actor.
Writer.
Director.
Comedian.
Humanitarian.
Father.
Producer.
Musician.
New York Times bestselling author.
Oh, you wrote a book?
I wrote one with you.
I don't think it was on the New York Times bestseller.
Oh, so you just, you co-wrote one book.
And Matt, can you, that was from my, that was from my intro, my part.
I actually did one with the New York Times bestseller award.
Congratulations.
Okay.
Tim's list of achievements does go on and on, so let's list them.
Have you ever seen the movie Bridesmaids?
Tim's in it.
Jordan Peele's Us.
The star of Rick Albertson's The Comedy, which is one of his greatest
performances I've ever seen.
It's unbelievable.
Moon Base 8.
Tim Robinson's show.
And it doesn't stop there.
He does stand-up tours.
He does music.
He does records.
He does shows where he does stand-up and music in the same night.
That's wild.
A wonderful thing called Onsen with Greg Turkington.
I'm a Patreon.
I do it.
I do both.
I'm part of the high network.
I get the emails.
I do forget my password from time to time, so I do miss some of the shows.
But luckily, they are archived, and I watch them in HD.
They're the best I can get from my interconnection that day, because it's spotty.
Thanks, Spectrum.
Then, after all this, it all circled back to his original passion, music.
The Bee Gees.
No, I'm supposed to say the Beatles.
Bee Gees.
He does like the Bee Gees.
Ten years ago, Tim released in Glendale, an earnest but still funny look at his
own life in Glendale, California.
And that's where we are right now, where he does his award-winning podcast
office hours.
But today, it's a show called Hot Seat, Berk Werheimer.
Now, the intro you saw wasn't the one that I approved.
This is actually the intro that my lawyer sent to Matt Carlin, producer Matt.
Somehow, it didn't get in there.
But we're playing Hot Seat!
Success.
No matter what the name of this show is, Tim, it's an opportunity to go deep
within a wonderful man, a guy I've known a quarter century, a man I respect,
love, and still tickled to this day.
Oh, thank you very much.
Are you ready for this experience?
I think so, yeah.
I'm trying to come in with an open heart and open mind.
Okay.
First question, do you appreciate the tenor of my, do you appreciate my low,
this voice?
I do like that.
I do like that, and I'll join you if you don't mind.
Everybody should turn up their speakers or put their headphones on because it's
going to be a quieter communication between the two of us.
It's going to be an intimate show, and let's start with something beautiful.
Close your eyes, Tim.
Do you do yoga?
I don't, I have in the past, I don't do it a regular, I don't have a regular
practice.
Well, I do yoga, and I'm going to set the tone for you as well as all of your
fans out there.
I want you to breathe in and hold it.
Hold it.
Exhale.
Now on this one, I want you to do it with intention.
I want you to, just, please.
When you breathe in, you're going to think about your life, 50 years of what
you've done.
You're going to hold your breath, and then you're going to think about all the
negativity that you don't want on the second half of your life, and you're
going to breathe it out, lion's breath style.
You stick it out.
Now, everyone out there at home, on YouTube, follow along.
Breathe in.
Think about Tim.
Think about 50 years, what that means.
Hold your breath, and exhale the negativity.
Success.
Also, I just want to tell everyone that I brought my own, my drop machine here
today, Tim.
So, I brought all the technicals.
You don't have to worry about it.
Those guys are here, but we should acknowledge that, right?
I mean, do you want it?
The Trinity's here.
Doug and Vic.
We do have a very special surprise.
This entire show is filled with surprises, special guests, tributes to you.
Okay.
But I do have a control over the drops, and I just said, please don't drop me
in the first part of the show, because I'm trying to be serious, and I also
have my own drop machine.
Oh, yeah.
What would it, and I want to derail things this early on, but what would it
take, and no disrespect to you guys, what would it take for you to come in and
fill that role on office hours on more of a permanent basis?
Tim, I was hoping you would ask me that, because I just feel like that reunion
of us, and you wouldn't, like, you wouldn't have to worry about the drops when
you're trying to solve something, and the guys with the headphones, because
they're just thinking drops.
Right.
But you have to think about the whole thing.
It might be a new approach.
Yeah!
And I have, I mean, I could do all this all day.
Oh, no, you didn't, Tim Hattaker.
Oh, nice.
Like, that's premium stuff I get off the internet.
You know, like, I also record my own stuff, so I'm ready to go.
You recorded that.
Yeah, well, I record it from the TV, but I can do this, and I do it gratis for
one month.
Okay.
And if your fans think it's wonderful, I'll do it.
Well, there's money to go around.
Yeah.
You know, two-for-one kind of thing.
Yeah!
It's not that great.
Ouch.
Quality sound.
Happy birthday, bitch.
It's pretty good.
It's pretty good.
You've got to be honest.
And also, guys, it's just taking a different slant at it.
Right.
We're 50.
You know what that means?
It's a little more, well, Doug's been 50 for six or seven, uh, ten years now.
What?
I see him skateboarding on YouTube every day.
I know.
Okay, well, sorry to-
Oh, no, you didn't, Tim Heidecker.
See, it's getting laughs.
Okay.
Is your drop machine just miked?
Yeah.
It's a different-
Well, I demanded it, so it's present.
Right.
The fidelity is actually very nice.
It's nice.
It's nice coming through a microphone.
And no one can control me.
You know what I mean?
This is my show.
Hot seat.
Okay, now let's get to the core of this.
Everyone loved our interview show that we did in conversation.
Now we're doing it, but I have control.
We've established that, yeah.
There is so much I need to ask you.
The fans have written in.
And a lot of the perception of you and I is mysterious.
Do they ever say anything real?
You know, when we promoted our movie, Billion Dollar Movie,
we did not do one real interview.
Yeah, I can't recall one, yeah.
It's one of my proudest moments.
It's mostly you doing funny shit.
But it's beautiful.
But today, because I had so much feedback from the fans,
you know, saying, how are you going to keep it real?
I have a brand new lie detector system.
Okay.
It looks like a little microphone, but we just put it,
you actually just hold it.
So hold it in your palm so you can read this.
Okay.
Now we're going to ask you a series of questions
just to make sure that you're going to be honest with the fans.
Okay.
Does it does that the whole time?
No, that's when it's processing.
Okay.
It's almost, okay, we're processed.
And that's connected to your...
This is Bluetooth to hear,
and it was a very expensive lie detector software.
Producer Matt would not reimburse me for that.
Well, that's something that you can have
for other reasons, I guess, other purposes.
I don't know.
Okay.
I'll try to think of something like that.
I'll send an invoice,
and you can do whatever you need to do with it.
Okay.
Okay.
Now, let's make sure this is calibrated.
Okay.
Success.
What is your name?
Full name?
Timothy Richard Heidecker.
Okay.
We have...
You are telling the truth.
Yeah.
What is your date of birth?
February 3rd, 1976.
Oh.
Well, that is your...
Yeah.
Let's try it again.
Just a little slower.
I see.
What is your date of birth?
February 3rd, 1976.
Success.
Okay.
So everyone at home...
Now, you can relax,
but you need to keep that on your person somewhere.
Okay.
I'll just hold it.
Yeah.
We are locked and loaded,
and we are ready for a great show.
Okay.
But first,
we have a message from our sponsors.
Oh.
This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.
Yeah, I need it.
You pull up the...
You have the...
Yeah, there you go.
Okay.

and love is in the air.

dozens of roses,
the hot tub jets turned all the way up,
but the temperature just right.
You know what I'm talking about, folks.
It's Valentine's season.
And maybe you like all that kind of stuff,

Back to the hot seat.
Thank you, Matt.
We're back at the hot seat.
And, you know,
I think that would be a great next follow-up show
is Tim and Eric's couples therapy.
Yeah.
Would you accept right now live on the internet
you and I and a real therapist?
We've never done it.
We don't really have problems.
No.
But wouldn't it be interesting
to dive deep with a professional?
To be filmed?
Of course.
We do a rope.
We can do a rope pull.
That kind of stuff.
That work.
Sure.
Success.
All right.
Let's get into this, Tim.
You're literally the guy who has it all.
Success.
Fame.
Family.
One of the greatest performers I've ever seen.
He can play every instrument.
He makes his own music.
He's got the look
