Hello there. Here we are in the beautiful glacial dressing room of superstar
Norm MacDonald.
How are you, Norm?
Good, Sean. Good to see you, man.
Good. And you are from Ottawa originally, aren't you?
Oh, I'm sorry.
That's all right.
You know, you're a popular man. People call you. You're from Ottawa?
Yes, I'm originally from Ottawa.
Now, we used to, I remember years ago, we were on the circuit together.
Absolutely.
Very long time ago.
You went on to great things. I labored obscurity.
But, what was the first big thing you think that you got that really catapulted
you guys?
Oh, yeah.
We had, at that point, at that time, the Montreal Comedy Festival started, just
when I started.
So, I got, like, really lucky because there weren't, you know, there was a
Canadian quota with it.
Sure.
So, I got on way too early, like, earlier than I should have because there were
so few comics at the time.
Right. So, you're kind of, you got it at the right time.
Yeah, because I had done Montreal, because I was from Ottawa, so close to
Montreal, so I knew Ernie Butler, who knew the guy that ran the festival.
Ernie Butler.
That's right.
There's a man.
He's passed away.
He has for a long time.
Sad.
He was a crazy man.
He was insane.
One time, he, yeah.
Yeah.
I guess I got to talk too much about how crazy he was, but he was crazy.
Well, he always did the same jokes off the top, though.
He did.
It was always, hey, if you're, thanks for coming.
If you're from Longue, get out.
It would be the same jokes.
Yeah, it would be the same things.
Every time.
I think he did sometimes, like, for a while, he was doing cocaine.
Awesome.
Yeah, and he would go, remember, they'd always have the Blues Brothers themes.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
It was super exciting.
And then he'd get up there, and he'd be talking, like, to the audience, and you
could always tell when he was coming down a little.
Oh, yeah.
He'd lose a little confidence, and then he'd just introduce, there's a guy.
Hey, you know Montreal, how are you today?
Very interesting guy.
So Montreal kind of catapulted you.
Yeah, yeah.
Who saw you there?
Did you get an agent out of that?
I got an agent, yeah.
A guy.
You're still with that agent.
An American agent.
No.
It was an American agent who ended up running off with everyone's money.
Perfect.
Yeah, it was an agency called Spotlight, and then he said, he booked me, like,
he signed me, and then he booked me.
He said, I'll get you a gig, don't worry about that, and then two weeks later,
he got me a gig.
But I only had, like, 20 minutes.
Right.
And he got me a gig in North Carolina somewhere.
Nice.
Headlining.
And so I did 20 minutes.
I tried to do it slowly, like, my material.
I still only got to about 30, and I never had the manager.
So I ended up switching with the middle.
Oh, right.
Which actually has happened to me a few times in my career, especially in the
south of the United States.
Where they'll go, do you mind switching?
Because the middle guy does so well.
Really?
What is, I mean, I only remember you killing.
I never had a problem.
The southern United States, I never did well.
Why?
What is it?
They're, like, big burly.
Big burly guys.
Like, I noticed in the audience, like, the girls, beautiful girls with big burly.
Ugly men.
The rednecks, yeah.
And I had, like, short, thin-tie, jacket.
Yeah, because they were very dressed like Leno back then.
You'd pull up your arm, pull up your jacket, arm sleeves.
So how did you get to Saturday Night Live?
Oh, Saturday Night Live, yeah, that was kind of lucky.
I just did stand-up, and then I was on, I guess, somebody sent me on Letterman
or something like that.
Right.
And then they, and then the guy, the head writer phoned me, and he's like, do
you want to, like, if you want to audition for Saturday Night Live, you have to
do two characters and two, I think it was two characters and two impressions
and two sketches.
And I said, I might be able to write sketches, but I can't do characters.
Right.
So then the guy's like, oh, well, he's like, you'll just fail, so it's better
if you come on as a writer.
Right.
So that was lucky for me, because I would have, because I've seen those auditions,
like, in front of Lorne and one of those that really are.
And I'm not, like, a trained guy, so those guys are all trained.
Why did you get into comedy, though?
I mean, what, were you always funny, or were you, everybody's always asking
people, you're the class clown.
My brother was the class clown.
Was he?
And I was quiet.
Yeah, I was pretty quiet.
Like, no, it was always, like, to me, like, the class clowns were always, like,
hacky.
Yeah.
Like, I was like, oh, that guy's not funny, but he's getting all the laughs,
like, I'd just be sort of angry at the back, you know.
But, no, because, like, and they also say, like, girls go for guys with sense
of humor, but to me it was like.
No.
They just go, you're weird.
Like, they wouldn't think it was funny.
No.
They just think it was weird.
Well, your comedy was weird, probably.
Yeah, it was probably, yeah, it was probably weird.
So, you're on, how did you get, make the leap from a writer to, to getting on?
Oh, that's what's good about Saturday Night Live, yeah.
You can go from writer to.
Performer.
Performer, because Lauren is, like, just whoever is funny at the table and
stuff.
So, you could always write stuff for yourself, like, just little things.
So, it's kind of like trying to get someone to write for you, is, if you're in
the cast, you're always trying to team up with a writer, right?
Yes.
And have your cadre of people.
Right.
So, if you can write yourself, you're, like, if you can't write, you're in
trouble, like, except for Farley, because he was just always funny.
So, people would want to write for him.
Sure.
But, if you were a stand-up, so you could write, and you could go on update and
do things on, straight to the camera, just like stand-up.
Sure.
So, you were a lot better off than trying to convince guys to write for you
when they could write for Sandler or Farley, or, you know, they're not going to
write for you.
So, when I started off, I was always writing for myself, and I was always
writing, like, just one-piece things into the camera, you know.
So, who's your kid?
Did you have a best friend from that era, on the show?
On the show?
By the pals.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, Sandler and Farley, they were kind of, like, way bigger than me, so they
were my friends.
But, they were, like, in another league.
They've already done movies and stuff like that.
So, mostly I hung around with Spade.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
And are you still friends?
Yeah, yeah.
Except he's, like, we're sort of friends, but he's, like, he's just always with
girls and show business.
You know, he's, like.
He loves that.
And you don't?
No, I don't like that.
I know you're wearing sweatpants.
You're a casual kind of guy.
Yeah, I don't go.
I get so exhausted just doing, like, the work.
Yeah.
Extend of working, you know?
That I don't have.
I can't get dressed up.
I can't go to parties.
All that stuff's too exhausting.
I like to stay home.
Yeah.
I really, I just want to do it and people like me.
Right.
And then go home.
And then go home.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm lazy that way.
So these guys, like David Spade, yeah, it's a 24-hour job with him, like,
getting girls, going to premieres, going to parties, doing work, his work.
I mean, it's really.
Stupid.
Absorbing.
It's just kind of stupid because any time I've gone to any of those events, oh,
my God.
Well, I just thought, you're like, please, can I leave?
How long is enough?
And now can I leave?
My manager's like, you know what?
You've got to go and be one of those people.
And I'm like, well, I can't, I can do it, but I really, it's not my favorite
thing.
Yeah, it is exhausting.
And I do notice, like, if I do go to a party, like, sometimes a guy will go,
hey, and then he'll put me in his show or something for an episode.
Isn't that fun?
Yeah, but.
That's what you're hoping for.
Yeah.
So if you went to all the parties, that would happen a lot more.
Yeah.
You know, people just keep you in their mind, but it's still too exhausting for
me.
You'd rather not work at all.
You're looking to end it, basically.
So what are you, what is your, what are you doing now?
What are you up to?
Like, you're toured, you do a lot of stand-up?
Yeah, I'm doing a lot of stand-up, but I've taken, like, the last three months
off, which has been great, because I was doing way too much.
And, and the airplanes, it's just the airplanes.
Otherwise, it's fine.
I hate to fly.
I hate to wait.
It's the other thing I hate.
If you could drive everywhere in your own car, it would be kind of fun.
That would be cool.
Yeah, but that's never going to happen.
And being alone.
Like, I take guys with me sometimes, but that's hugely expensive, you know.
Sure.
But, um.
Depends on the guy, though, how expensive it is.
Who's the most expensive guy to tour with?
Well, it's buying all their food and, uh, and, uh, plane tickets are expensive.
And if they ruin their clothes or something, you have to re-clothe them.
That's horrible.
I know what that's like.
But I got a podcast just like you.
I know.
And how is the podcast?
It's always, like, in the top ten.
Weird.
It's just a guy, they all do it.
I just show up.
That's the way to work.
That's what I feel your career is really moving towards.
Yeah.
You're just showing up places.
That would be the best.
And everything is there, and then you're done.
That would be the best.
That would be good.
But, uh, it's, it, even that's, like, more tiring than I thought it would be.
And, uh.
Are you chronically tired?
I'm tired today.
You're a fatigued man.
No, I'm just tired today.
Oh.
So that's all I want to do, that prism of.
Exhausting.
How I feel at this moment.
My life is exhausting.
So you're up here for Match Game.
How did that happen?
How did that come about?
Is it something you wanted to?
I love game shows.
You love game.
Well, you were amazing on, uh, was it?
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
Well, I was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Yeah, yeah.
And were you in the circle, too?
That was awesome.
What's the circle?
The one, not the circle, but, uh, The Weakest Link.
Did you do that as well?
No, I would have done that.
That would have been fun.
But, yeah, you're famous.
I told my manager to take any, I did Password once.
It's just fun, because when I was a kid, I always watched game shows.
I loved Match Game.
Yeah, Match Game was great.
Yeah.
It always seemed like such a, like a, like a, like a world of fantasy, you know.
Excitement.
People.
I was, I always dreamed of being a contestant, or, and then I had a dream when
I was young,
I'd be the guy that said the products at the end, like, real fast.
Jimmy, uh, Johnny Olsen?
Yeah, exactly.
From the, you know.
I was very crazy, I think, when I was a kid.
So I didn't even want to be the host.
I just thought it'd be cool to be that guy at the end, sell the products.
That's fantastic.
Rice-a-roni.
Rice-a-roni.
San Francisco treat.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, so.
And, uh, Spiegel catalog, 90209.
Chicago, Illinois.
Oh, yeah.
So this is, uh, you're growing up in Ottawa.
So, what's, uh, you know, what was your, who was your favorite comedian growing
up, besides
me?
Uh.
You didn't know about me.
Growing up?
Yeah.
Uh, when I was a little kid, I saw Rich Little, because he was from Ottawa.
Yeah, for sure.
And he would come out and do, he'd perform in Ottawa, and my parents would come
and see
him, and he'd do impressions of, like, these, because he was famous, he has the
biggest
impressions in the world, so he'd do impressions of these famous people, but
then he'd do impressions
of people from Ottawa, as well.
Wow!
So everyone, like, liked him.
And, uh, so he was my favorite then.
And I remember me and all my friends would do impressions, my brother, uh, Rich
Little's
impressions, but we didn't even know who the guys were.
Right.
It was, like, Cagney and, uh.
Well, I always loved this one bit in your act where you did, uh, what it was,
uh, Archie
Bunker doing, um, uh, Julius Caesar by Shakespeare.
That's right, Julius Caesar.
That was heavily influenced by Rich Little.
Could you do it right now?
Do you remember it at all?
I could do a little, he's like, uh, yeah, yeah, it's, it's big.
I love this.
It's, what was it?
It was, oh yeah, Archie Bunker as Julius Caesar.
Yeah, he goes, uh, oh yeah, and then it's Edith goes, she goes, uh, beware the
Ides of March.
Oh yeah, jeez, if it ain't the Oracle of Dingbat.
And he's like, oh jeez, there's all my friends there, there's Brutus, there's
Cassie, there's
Jesus, I always hated that guy.
He stayed waving to the knives there, fellas.
He's like, ouch, ouch, ouch, just ain't killing me over here.
That is fantastic.
I love that.
That was fun to do.
And there was a bit that you've forgotten, did I talk to you about it?
Yes, that's weird.
That's weird that you told me a joke I forgot.
And I was thinking about it last night, I remember the show, too.
It was called The One Million Dollar Chance of a Lifetime.
That was the name of the game.
Oh, that's right.
And you watched it.
And then you reminded me of this joke that I forgot.
Yeah, so it's a game called The One Million Dollar Chance of Lifetime.
But if you lose, they give you the home game.
And that's a lot of fun because you can collect, what was it?
Oh, that was a lot of fun because you can gather with the family around the
table and relive
that magic moment.
When Dad blew a million dollars.
Yes, that's right.
Well, I don't want to take up a huge amount of your time, but it's fun.
I mean, just remembering when we were starting, it was with Corky and the Juice
Pigs.
Corky and the Juice Pigs.
I think we went somewhere together on tour.
Yes, we did.
We went to, I feel we were in Hamilton.
That could be right.
Donny Coy's.
Donny Coy.
Donny Coy's place.
How's Donny Coy doing?
I don't know.
I think he might have died, but I don't want to.
I don't think he's dead.
People, I have no idea.
I haven't been in the Ryukyuk circuit for years and years.
But he was famous.
Yes.
Famous.
Oh, yeah.
Donny.
One time, Donny Coy, I was at Hamilton, and I bombed for 40 minutes, and then
Donny Coy
was the emcee, and as I was leaving, he said, you're getting an encore.
So I was like, huh?
And I left, and he's like, you want to see more?
He just wanted to sell more beer.
You want to see more, Norm?
I'm like, no, no.
He's like, well, you are.
Jesus.
But sometimes you do forever.
Like, you get drunk and just talk about Hamilton forever.
And people loved it?
Yeah, they loved Donny.
His hat.
Yeah.
His giant hat.
Yeah, it was his hat.
But is somebody, is his daughter running their club now?
Oh, really?
Or is it just Niagara Falls he runs now?
Oh.
You don't really know the politics of the universe.
You had Niagara Falls?
Yeah.
You had Niagara Falls?
I'm just throwing that out.
There was a Niagara Falls.
Yeah.
I think he ran it at one point.
The juice pigs were fun.
The juice pigs.
It was fun.
And so, anyway, I just thought I'd come in and talk.
Fantastic.
Here we are.
I'm going to listen to your podcast.
Well, yeah, just to hear that.
Yeah.
Because you'll probably forget what you said.
Yeah.
Completely.
But it's good.
Thanks a lot, Norm.
Thanks, John.
Pleasure.
It was fun.
Pleasure.

Well, I always loved this one bit in your act where you did, uh, wh
