You know, with all due respect to the three names, the three poker
personalities we've heard so far,
this is certainly the biggest, highest profile name we've ever had, I think, on
our podcast here.
Norm MacDonald, stand-up comedian.
Let's hear what he had to say about his home game memory.
I was playing home game.
We were sort of celebrities.
I was good buddies with this guy, Sam Simon, who was one of the guys who
started The Simpsons.
Created The Simpsons, sure.
And he became a poker devotee.
Yes.
We used to be married to Jennifer Tilly.
Right.
He told me a funny thing about Jennifer Tilly.
He goes, my wife has two habits, high-stakes poker and shopping for jewelry.
But, yeah, so anyways, when I was playing him, there was a couple of poker
players.
Always, maybe Phil Locke, I can't remember, Jennifer.
And there was a guy that had written a book.
He was an FBI profiler.
Oh, Joe Navarro.
Yeah, Joe Navarro, sure.
Joe Navarro, yeah.
And he'd tell you completely useless things.
Like, watch the guy's feet.
I'm like, how the fuck can you see someone's foot?
He's like, if it's shaking, that means...
But anyways, anyways, and Norman Chad was one of the guys.
So we were playing all these ridiculous games.
You know, those games you play when you're a kid.
Well, like, follow the queen, like that type of thing?
Yeah, like that kind of thing.
Yeah, yeah.
So there was this one where it's low, and it was me, Sam, and Norman Chad.
And it was...
You have to declare?
You declare low, high, or both.
Okay.
So, anyway, Norman Chad, I had neither.
Okay.
Like, I had a very middling hand.
Uh-huh.
So I say to Norman Chad, I can't remember what I do, because, like, I mean, I'm
pretty sure...
I mean, I have...
Am I allowed to say I have what I have?
I have six high, seven high?
Like, so I...
But I don't...
I know I don't have...
So is it one or two, or...
But I didn't have anything.
So you knew this was a...
You're putting it on.
Pretending.
Uh-huh.
Okay.
So he goes, he goes, listen, what do you not understand?
Because I asked, like, three times, like, is it one or two, or both?
He goes, it's one.
If you have the lock, just put one.
He's like, all right, all right, I'll put one.
And then him and...
Him and Sam both went for high.
Right.
And then I had a pair of fives.
And so he got really mad.
Oh, boy.
And I go, oh, no, I thought that was the...
I thought that was the thing you're supposed to do.
Like, I thought you were supposed to trick the person.
And then he lost $65 or something.
And then I heard him on the World Series of Poker, and they were talking about,
you know,
your worst beat ever.
He's like, I'll never forget this hand.
And it was that hand.
And he said, oh, they were talking about the worst loss ever.
And he said that night he lost $500.
He was playing with Sam Simon and Jennifer Tilly and Phil Lowe.
I'm like, $500?
It was your biggest loss?
You play against world-class high-stakes poker players in cash can.
That's a hell of a story.
That was funny, yeah.
Thank you.
It was sort of a home game.
I moved from Toronto.
And with all my buddies, when I first was starting comedy in L.A., none of us
had any money.
So I went and I got a job in L.A., so I had some money.
So I invited these guys to my house.
So we used to play nickel poker, and we'd play for nickels, you know.
And I couldn't lose.
It was like my biggest rush in my life.
I went $16 or something.
In nickels.
So I had a fucking giant thing of more nickels than anyone's ever possessed at
once.
And then they were all mad at me.
And I'm like, I don't want this piece.
I don't want 800 nickels, you know.
Is that the right math?
Something like that, yeah.
Oh, 32,000 nickels.
That's a lot of nickels.
Like, I don't want all these nickels.
Like, give them back.
They're like, no, we got our pride.
But anyway, they're with me four days, or I'm mad at me.
I have $16 I can't even spend.
Right.
That's very good.
