Norm Macdonald Live w/ Guest Margaret Cho (S03E12)

today's show is sponsored by nature box and wink we are back for another season
of normie down alive and my trusty sidekick and me to get to my immediate
right you will recognize how has your hiatus been what have you been doing
what have you been up to oh it's been great what's been occupying your time in
mind uh you know just work I'm glad that we've come back it's been great kind
of
what kind of work what kind of work you're doing I'm still I'm still love
booking the comedy store oh no still booking the store you're booking the
comedy store yeah what happened to the job you had putting in fence posts oh it
didn't work out you didn't wear out why not I just wasn't very good at it okay
yeah so now you're back where of the comedy store where you can buy comedy it's
not that kind of store yeah I don't do a lot
a lot of I don't like to sell my comedy
again it's not an actual store that's just the name it's it's just a comedy
club
well another thing I like to do over my heinous hiatus of course is indulged my
insatiable appetite for history oh yeah you love history and of course I'm now
very
interested because of you you put me on to this this whole thing about the nazis
you
told me you gotta watch more more of this nazi propaganda where where this line
Lenny reference style what's
your name Lenny Riefenstahl Lenny Riefenstahl and I agree with you she is a
fine director fine
director I recommended the movie Rudy has Lenny Riefenstahl done any comedy is
nothing I'm aware of
no well she's very good at what she does and and you know what I like about it
there's always something new what do you mean new new new audio and video
recording are being found yes
seems like a matter of fact one came out just last week of a shot of I think it
was the
Nuremberg rally yes the Nuremberg rally and it's a fascinating one because they
have some very rare recording if you listen to it very carefully very closely
you can hear
people speak let's take let's take a listen I'll show you what I'm talking okay
I'll show you what I'm talking
about look at the use of architecture it's a bird yeah look at this now listen
very carefully right here
do you have the tickets what role are we in me I don't have the tickets you
have the tickets this is
so embarrassing we're late as it is and how we don't even have that well you
two idiots shut up
I got the tickets what row are we in yeah let's see g-44 g-45 g-52 what we're
not even sitting
together I think we passed g-section this is section D shit just find a place
and sit down
oh I don't think so I don't think so they are really strict here strict so
there it is
ha it does stir the heart you were right about that you were right about that
yeah you said to watch
the you said I would get a big kick out of the now I don't agree with what the
man said
I have to that's where you and I part ways but I liked it I like the the scope
of it that the bigness
I guess it's not the film I suggested to you I told you to watch Rudy yeah Rudy
I don't know what the
I don't know what the fellow's name was but that's not it's just that's in a
stadium as well no I'm
talking about Rudy Notre Dame football
it was fine fine fine film and I thank you for it but there are some things
again that
you will never talk me into and I do not care for that man when we return a
third will be with us
Margaret Cho
our guest tonight wrote these lyrics
the song is called my puss and there is someone like this my puss looks so
fantastic your puss smells like bad plastic my puss likes it nice and rough
whereas your puss has bad bad dandruff
my puss is so fine that I flaunt it whereas your puss is so old it is haunted
my puss makes everybody horny
everybody horny your puss looks somewhat like barney
my puss won 15 tonnies your puss hangs down to your knees my puss must be
pretty if it showed
whereas your puss has its own zip card
I'd rather like that one
my puss won the FIFA world cup
your puss makes me sneeze and throw up
my puss is soft
like velvet whereas your puss
whereas your puss is dead like Elvis
the author of those lyrics
our guest tonight
Margaret Cho
and my sidekick Adam Egan is with us
and we've been on hias Margaret
and we're just getting back so you'll excuse us if we aren't as good at the
I don't like to lick anybody's asshole because it's like putting your tongue on
a 9 volt battery
there is a copper feel to it
it's coppery and it's acrid
yeah
yeah it's pennies
yeah it tastes just like pennies
it's like pennies
it tastes like pennies
I've been told
I don't like the flavor
he calls it pennies from heaven
but yeah I'm not that
I'm not anally inclined
as I were I was much more into it when I was younger
I don't like it anymore
this is what I've learned
there's a phrase anal when you're tidy
you know you're meticulous you're cleaning up
oh that fella's anal
anyway
anal retent
are you anal retentive
so what I learned is
you should instead of the word anal
you should just use the word tidy
because what happens is a guy will get out of jail
big fella
you know weigh 300, 400 pounds
come over to your house and he's cleaning up
he's meticulous
by golly you say Rocco you seem like an anal fella
and you're like oh stop don't hit me anymore
oh no
he starts hitting you
oh no
and I realized I should have just said tidy
yeah not anal
no and I get out my OED and try to explain to him
but it doesn't work
but you were making a point earlier in the car
yeah about that just that whole class I guess you would call it
because Mr. Show is like my generation's Monty Python
yeah
it was a big event
yeah
my generation's Monty Python was Monty Python
probably Monty Python
yes
but did you have a sense at that time that you guys were really in the center
of something
Monty Python was The Goon Show
oh yeah yeah
I don't know The Goon Show
The Goon Show
what's it called The Goon Show?
Spike Mulligan yeah
oh okay
that was funny
yeah really funny
the clown prince of comedy right
the what?
is that what they call them?
or is it Spike Jones?
and there's that Ernie Kovacs too
oh
that's all like very cool like old TV that was very surreal
but Mr. Show is also very surreal
yeah
and yeah we did have a sense that something was happening
that we were around something great
and that something amazing was in our midst
and you know we'd see Weezer and Spin Magazine
and one of the guys had a t-shirt that he'd written
I love Janine Garofalo on it
that's pretty good
you know
it was like the 90s is like such a vibrant time
what was the enemy at that time?
the enemy?
I don't know if we had an enemy
prop comedy?
I mean was Saturday Night Live
what was the old guard?
was Saturday Night Live the old guard?
no no Saturday they were all on SNL
you know you were on SNL
Laura, Janine
Laura was on it, Janine was on it
it was very
Sarah
yeah Sarah Silverman was on it
it was a very big deal
but all very
they were all very
they weren't really on much
no no
but that show was more standard obviously
I think yeah it was more establishment
but we were still involved in it you know
you guys were still all a part of it
which is amazing because finally we were seeing like
ourselves reflected back in real media such
in these real institutions like SNL in movies
and in
but I've been at the time you know David Cross was like
ah it's SNL
no
is there a lot of that?
well the difference between the show
Mr. Show and SNL is pretty vast
because SNL was very structured and kind of like
fits this format that it always has done
but Mr. Show was totally surreal, totally rock and roll
lots of drug humor, lots of weird stuff
you know my favorite is when David Cross is in the
this his head is through the bed
and he's like a hot top
Titanic
or he tried to commit suicide but in a vat of acid
yeah so he didn't all the way melt
so he's just like a hot dog
and I remember being in the audience of that
and I could not believe how funny it was
like it was so incredibly ridiculous
I just laughed so hard
it was so good
it was a really funny sketch
it was a really funny sketch
it was a really funny sketch
but they were so like
I mean David Cross always makes me die laughing
yeah David Cross is great
he's so funny
you know what I loved about SNL over any alternative show up till then
because obviously SNL was an alternative show and it came along
but SNL and the first David Letterman show at 12:30
were the only shows I ever saw on television where everything didn't kill
like every other show every other sketch show every other time everything would
kill
everyone would laugh at everything that was said
well except for SCTV there was sometimes they didn't even have a laugh track on
SCTV
no but they didn't have a laugh track but I mean if it had an audience it would
kill
and the only two shows I ever saw were the first Letterman I did the 12:30
Letterman
they didn't laugh sometimes
did you do comedy on that show?
you did comedy on that show
yeah you could bomb on that show
yeah well I bombed a lot on TV but you just it sort of was okay you know it was
part of it
although I am banned from The Tonight Show from doing stand-up comedy because I
switched my set
and I didn't do what I was supposed to do
because I was like nervous and I kind of bombed and I ran out of time and then
I was like
oh I just kept going and I didn't know what to do because I wanted to end on a
laugh
so I can do sit down I can sit down at the desk and do the interview but I can't
do stand-up comedy
which I did I guess you're you're anyway you're promoted anyway if you're
sitting down
right yeah
but I always thought I would want to do stand-up comedy like I always wanted to
do comedy on Letterman
but I did the sit down interviews which so I was an actress not a comic so I
never got that feeling
you know it's a different feeling
I had the problem with when people at some point didn't even know I was a stand-up
because I was always doing
the sit down the panel
yes I thought oh this guy's like a horse and bean you know they wouldn't know I
hadn't had
horse and bean
just a raconteur you know what I mean
but when we come back we will not talk about horse and bean
