And we're back with Sarah Silverman.
I was going to ask you, Sarah, who's a studio audience.
It's only the second time we've ever heard of a studio audience.
Everyone's so excited to see you today.
But I was going to ask you about the phenomenon of women in comedy, which is,
you know, virgin to the point of, you know, superfluity.
But you were around, like, do you ever think of the timing of that?
Here, you're probably...
You know what I think about?
Yeah, sorry, go on.
I was going to ask that the people that now exist in female comedy and control
it, probably you were their hero at some point in their life.
I would love that if, yeah, sure, I'll take it.
Don't you think that's true?
I mean, there was no one else, I don't think, around your time.
Well, there's always, well, you know, when I started out, the kind of company
line that I fully accepted, and it's crazy looking back, was they would say to
you, you're only a real comic if your material could be said by a male comedian.
Oh, boy, that's, really?
And then it would be, and it would be just as funny.
And I accepted it.
I mean, they'd say, like, Paula Poundstone, she's a real comedian, because her
material could be said by a man.
And I don't know how—I don't know how, but that—I accepted that, and that
made sense to me.
And looking back, it's just so crazy that the idea of me talking about my own
experience as a woman would make me not a valid comedian.
Because—and the thought behind it was, how it was explained, is women in the
audience are only there—they're on dates, and they're just—they're only
going to laugh if the guy laughs.
Wow.
So it was a really different world.
I would think it would be the opposite, flipped.
Maybe, but this was—
That the guy wants to get laid, you know what I mean?
This is what we were told, you know?
But nowadays, it doesn't make sense if you're on a date, who do you want to see?
A woman, you know what I mean?
Because the woman wants to see a woman, and the guy wants to get laid.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
But, like, talking about the female experience was just not cool.
And I would buy into it.
But what about nowadays, movies?
You know, there's all-women movies, and then you watch it, that's all gross-out
humor.
And I go, wait a minute, I think they're doing a guy's comic.
Well, I think there's going to be a feeling-your-way-through element.
I mean, like, Bridesmaids, to me, is a perfect movie.
I mean, it's so funny, you know?
But, yeah, there is an element of, like, why don't we just do the guy's version
of—I mean, the female version of this.
And, you know, it's—I don't think that's necessary, but, you know, I—there's
a—you know, it's like basketball.
You know, like, guys get to try everything and fail and keep going.
And it took me a long time of playing basketball my whole life with guys.
At first, you're so serious on the court.
And every basket you miss is, like, missing a hundred baskets.
And you feel the guys around you go, oh.
But it's in my mind.
I don't know if that's necessarily true, or maybe it was true, but it doesn't
matter.
And once I realized, like, wait a minute, every single one of these guys are
shooting and missing, and I don't even think twice about it.
And neither do they.
It's like they don't have that pressure in their lives.
And until you keep shooting and shooting and shooting, you don't get great, you
know?
And once I realized that, and much later in life, I got great at basketball,
you know?
But it is—it is true.
There's—women have to make sure that they give themselves leeway to fail.
Listen, show business is cutthroat, and you can only fail so many times.
But I've found I can fail several times.
And I'm still around.
We play basketball on Sundays, and I'm—I stopped this practice, but I think
he started—men would get two points for a field goal, and women would get 1.4.
You're so cute.
Field goal?
But, um—
Isn't that what it's called?
No.
What's an FG?
That's football.
No, no.
A field goal is in football.
And basketball.
A field goal is in basketball?
You mean a foul shot?
No, no.
It's a free throw.
A two-point shot.
Oh, a free throw?
No, no, no.
No, no, no.
No, and there's a field goal.
Yeah.
In basketball?
Yeah, it's worth two points.
Look at that.
All right.
We'll edit it out.
You ever see FG and then a percentage mark?
Like, field goal percentage is made by the team.
Well, first of all, every point in professional basketball is two points.
Every basketball.
A free throw is one.
A free throw is one.
A free throw is one, right.
Yeah, seven field goals are three.
He's right.
You're right.
There is a field goal in basketball.
I've never heard of it.
It's not used a lot.
It's really not used at all.
That's so interesting.
It's not used at all.
Field goal.
Look at you.
It's cool.
It's a hard set.
You know, well, I always played at the Y, and then my senior year of high
school.
You love the Y?
I love the Y.
Are you talking about eating pussy?
I thought of that because I thought he was going to say it.
Without any irony, I thought he was going to jump in.
I used to get out there.
That's what he would be.
Adam, do you love pussy?
I do.
Do you have a girlfriend?
Yeah.
You know what a girl told me?
What's the name of that?
I love guys that, like, date, like, lawyers and then go, she's a great girl.
Yeah, is she a great girl?
A girl, you mean?
That's what?
Yeah, I don't know.
It's just so weird.
I didn't know.
What about when a guy's going out with a girl?
I don't know if you see this, but maybe the girls are the same.
But you'll say to a guy, what happened when you're not going out with her?
She was crazy.
And then they just accept it.
Well, it's like when somebody goes, like, I've had 10 hermits, and they've all
been crazy.
I think they're the crazy.
Do you think maybe there's a pattern there?
So, like, the guys who always go out with women who are crazy, go, well, you're
the common denominator.
Exactly.
Not all women are crazy.
Women you're drawn to are crazy.
Exactly.
And you're fucking crazy.
One time I met a girl, and she said, she said, I just broke up with my
boyfriend.
Man, he used to treat me like shit.
Story of my life.
What do you think I'm going to do?
It's just interesting to me how quick, dynamite quick, the women's movement in
comedy changed.
Comedy's always changing.
It's not, it doesn't stay evergreen.
So, I mean, you know, unless you change with the times, you're going to be a
caricature of yourself, I would say.
Yeah, stand-up in particular.
Warhol said, become a cartoon of yourself.
You know, as a sure way, not of artistic merit, but of success, you know, so it
was a sort of idea of Truman Capote or something, who would keep doing himself
more and more until it was full-blown, you know, burlesque.
I bet a man famous.
Yeah, well, I mean, there are certain people that, and there are a whole,
especially like a lot of comics from the 80s that are really defined characters,
but then they're beholden to these characters, and then they don't take any
risks, and they don't change, they don't grow or, you know, do different shit.
We're talking about Dice, I imagine.
Well, Dice is a great example.
I mean, like—
You meet him.
It's odd.
And he has his children with him.
He's got the whole thing, and it's like, he's fucking brilliant.
He's a great actor, and he's—but, like, he does this thing, and I don't want
to—I mean, he's so nice, and I really like him, but I think—I feel like if
he were able to be vulnerable and try new things and see who he is and let that
change, you know, it entails letting audiences down.
And that's a scary thing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But I think that it could be really exciting because I find him totally watchable,
totally fascinating.
There's anything he could do, you know, but he kind of—it's almost like he
let his character become his life, become his life person.
Yeah, I don't know how he deals with his family, but I've seen him with his
kids, and he's completely in character.
But he seems lovely.
No, he does.
He does.
But, yeah, I just think—
I remember Colin Quinn telling him—I think it was at the cellar.
And, you know, he was very prickly and defensive dice, but Colin's idea was for
him to change
his routine by becoming super intellectual.
So he'd go—I can't do an impression of him.
I wish I could, but I saw the new Jean-Luc Godard picture, yeah!
You know, it's in the Cahiers d'Express.
I was reading an article.
Yeah, but honestly, I think that was what was great about him, was there is—there's
something smart in that that contrasts it, you know, like it's not just—so it
is—I don't
know.
I mean, I remember Louis C.K., he had an apartment on Bleeker, and he had a
record player, and
we had a Dice record, and we had listened to it—yeah, and I was just like, my
mind was blown!
I loved it!
It was incredible, yeah.
It was so fucking incredible.
I had only started stand-up, and Sam Kinison had come to Canada, and he liked
me.
And then Dice, I think, appeared—I don't know which appeared first.
But Goddamn, Kinison hated him, you know.
Kinison—because Kinison was so smart, you know, he didn't see that they were
the same
act, like everyone, like a writer would, you know, a magazine writer would
acquaint those
two.
Right.
Like, "Oh, they yell!" or whatever, yeah.
So that, I think, is what frustrated him most, but he called him a—he goes, "He's
a stag act."
You know?
Oh!
Like strip clubbing?
Yeah.
Or like a bachelor party.
Yeah, bachelor party.
I never heard that name.
Yeah, it was like, like, if the vulnerability behind that, like, uber-masculinity
would
be so interesting.
Well, you know, he could do it because he's a great actor.
Yeah.
Like, he was great in that Woody Allen picture.
He was great in, like, there was some, like, Mary Gross, Victoria Jackson movie
that
he was in.
Casual sex.
And he was fucking great in it.
Yeah, casual sex.
He was good in it.
Yeah.
And there was a movie called Crime Story, I think it was even before he was
famous.
And it was him against Ray Liotta.
It was about Vegas, you know.
And he was the bad guy.
I'm sorry.
Ray Liotta was the bad guy.
And the Chicago cop turned actor that was in—
Dennis Farina.
Dennis Farina was the good guy.
I love Dennis Farina.
Yeah, isn't he cool?
He was great.
He's masculine.
Yeah.
It's hard to find masculine guys anymore.
You have to go overseas to Wales.
You just said that in such a masculine way with that, like, burp swallow.
Well, you know, Russell Crowe or your beau from Wales, you know?
Mm-hmm.
Maybe they're, like, the Europeans.
They're more—
Well, I mean, my boyfriend—or whatever.
My on again off again.
Whatever.
He would, like, have to go home.
They w
