Oh, this is going to be fun.
I'm using a lot of big words, so this guy thinks I'm cool.
This guy's got me nervous.
I'm not going to lie.
I hate that.
I hate that people think I'm smart.
It's the fucking worst.
Come on.
You think we're idiots.
Let's be honest.
You got a collar shirt on, God damn it.
It's the fucking worst.
I'm from fucking outside Philly, too.
I know you look smart.
You do look smart.
I'm fucking just as...
I ate a fucking Wawa.
You think I don't understand the lights of that?
I ate a Wawa yesterday.
You're wearing pink.
That's like a tailored suit to us.
I really fucked up.
Yeah.
Gang, we couldn't be more excited that way.
You guys...
It's a pink shirt.
You guys see a tuxedo.
Yeah.
Jeez, we got a wedding after this meal?
We couldn't be more excited to have our incredibly special guest here with us
today for the first time.

And he has a brand new special out right now, which was released globally on
Netflix that you can watch as we speak, called Blocks.
But the big question in my mind today, is he garbage?
Not financially.
I can tell you that right now.
I keep doing all right.
Give it up for Neil Brennan, everybody.
Let's go.
What's up?
Let's go.
Hey, fellas.
Hey, well, hey.
You guys need money?
What do I have?
What's that?
Patreon address again?
Yeah.
Patreon.
I can never open a Patreon.
That's what sucks.
Yeah.
No, we started when we were poor, and now it's, you know.
Yeah.
Now, but you'll always be poor to people, and I'll always be rich to people.
Exactly.
Because when they met me, they're like, this fucking guy, even though they don't
know.
Yeah.
He's, well, you're walking around wearing pink.
What are they going to think?
I'm wearing pink shirts, right there.
Right there.
What do you got on you, like two, three grand?
What do you carry with you?
I usually like to carry a lot of cash.
Really?
Yeah.
Don't be telling people that.
Go ahead and come rob me.
You want to be a hero?
Make a move.
Let's go.
I think I'm afraid to get these hands dirty.
Yeah.
To quote Brian Cowan, I'll keep you busy.
I'll keep you busy.
That's all right.
But, yeah, I don't have a, like, I have like 50 bucks on me.
Okay.
It's sad.
Fair enough.
I'm no more than, no more than 80.
I feel anything more than that.
Cash is going out of business.
It is.
I mean, it's like, people are weird about it now.
It jams you up with the tips and shit like that, though.
I got the guys at the parking garage, hate my guts.
I never have a five on me.
You take Venmo?
Yeah.
Can we scan?
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm sorry.
Give us the backstory.
Give us the origin story, Neil Brennan.
Lay it on us.
Some PA roots.
Fuck.
Yeah.
Fuck, guys.
I grew up in, born in Philly, in Bryn Mawr Hospital, main line.
Know it.
And then moved to Chicago when I was like five.
Then moved back to Philly when I was 12, until 17.
Okay.
And then.
Jobs?
Or what was it, fam?
What was the?
Yeah, I got a new job.
I was in the Marine Corps.
I was 12, and I got transferred.
Ford transferred.
I got transferred.
You fucking jerk off.
When did two undercover cops get a podcast?
Look.
Say it into my chest, Neil.
Yeah.
You been drinking tonight, sir?
Guys, is it weird not to be wearing Jets jackets right now?
Oh, it's going to be a long hour, huh?
That's just the beginning.
Did he get beat or just going to get beat off?
That you come at me, I come at you three times.
I didn't come at you.
That's what you take offense.
You are a Philly dirtbag.
I really am.
Did you ask me about my dad's job?
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, jerk off.
Yeah, my dad works, jerk off.
Don't worry.
Don't worry about it.
Don't worry about it.
He's got a no-show job.
Yeah, exactly.
I'm saving this parking spot, by the way.
I got my chair there.
Don't touch it.
Kick the shit out of you.
Yeah, my dad got jobs.
And then-
So comfy.
And then-
And then 17, I came here for film school.
When I was in high school, my brother's a comedian, Kevin Brennan.
So I started coming up here and hanging out.
Right.
And then came-
The Boston Comedy Club.
Yeah, Boston Comedy Club.
Shout out to it.
And then shout out to it.
And the Cellar and the Improv.
And then was going to NYU in 91.
Started working the door at the Boston.
Only other guys my age were like Red Johnny and the Round Guy.
Remember them?
I've only heard the stories, yeah.
John DiMaggio does a ton of-
He does the voice for Futurama.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, Bender.
He does Bender.
Yeah.
Wow, no shit.
Yeah, John DiMaggio, yeah.
Holy shit.
He's a kill voiceover.
Yeah.
And a great dude.
And Jay Moore and Chappelle.
We were the only young people under 21.
Right.
That's pretty crazy.
So me and Dave, super close.
And then I started getting writing jobs in LA.
Wrote for Singled Out.
It's unlisted.
Shout out to Singled Out.
Unlisted, Singled Out.
That was a good show.
Unlisted all that on Nickelodeon.
Unlisted Kenan and Kel.
Fucking, and then-
What age is this?
Early 20s?
I'm like 20s.
Yeah, it's crazy.
So you didn't go to college.
I went to NYU for a year.
You went to NYU for a year.
Where'd you go to high school down there?
Carroll.
You did?
Yeah.
Wow, look at you.
Archbishop Carroll, hon.
Catholic, hon.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, hon.
Yeah, hon.
And you fucking J-O.
You fucking Jag-Off.
How'd you start getting the writing gigs?
Just started to make them?
Well, I would give guys tags at the comedy club.
Like, I gave Dave some jokes here and there.
And not even jokes.
Like, maybe a way you could go in that premise or whatever.
Right.
And then I would tell people.
I was like, you know, bleh.
You know, so then I-
You gotta beef up the resume a little bit.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then I was working for a casting director.
We first singled out.
All the writers quit.
So then they were like, you're right.
Come on.
That was the pilot.
It got picked up.
And then-
Oh, that's awesome.
Nick, all that shared in office with Singled Out.
So I started talking to this guy, Dan Schneider, who's Googling.
He's had some-
Yeah, that's him, right?
Yep.
Okay.
All right.
Moving on.
Yep.
And-
I've never heard that name casually dropped in conversation.
Like, oh, that one?
All right.
Yep.
And so submitted to all that.
Didn't get the job.
They ended up stealing an idea from me.
I didn't know that.
Then they hired me for the second season.
That Pierre Escargot thing, the Keenan in the bathtub.
I pitched it.
They didn't hire me.
Used it.
Then I was like, what?
They hired me the next season.
It's a payback.
There you go.
That's when you know you're on the right path, they start stealing it from you.
Yeah, keep your mouth shut.
Yeah, exactly.
I just dropped Don.
You did, yeah.
30 years later.
I just crossed the street.
I'm ready to come inside, guys.
Kid's wearing a wire over in Nickelodeon.
Put that life of writing behind me, baby.
And then wrote a movie script.
Not good, but it kind of had a spirit to it.
Met with the producer.
Then a week later, Dave met with the same producer.
And they were like, have you got any ideas?
And he's like, yeah, me and a buddy of mine are writing a weed movie.
Meanwhile, we'd never discuss that.
And they go, who?
And he's like, you've never heard of them.
Trust me.
Have you ever seen all that?
Tell us who.
And then he goes, Neil Brennan.
And they're like, Neil was just here.
We love Neil.
So then we pitched the movie.
We pitched Half-Baked 30 days later.
Crazy.
We went to Trainspotting, the movie.
And then he was like, you could do a weed one of those.
And I was like, yeah.
Just like water.
I didn't.
It wasn't like.
Hey, you cranked this out in a couple of weeks.
Yeah.
You got a typewriter, right?
Why the fuck can get on that?
He didn't.
He wasn't even like you.
He was like, a person could do a weed version.
Yeah, he could turn that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hand you a bag of heroin.
No, yeah.
Like, all right.
So then we had 30 days to pitch it.
We had 30 days to get it together.
And then we took like 29 the night before.
