Emergency Office Hours with Robbie Martin (Ep 119 7/20/2020)

I like to be smart. I like learning facts. I want the straight dope, not a
bunch of bullcrap.
I want to know things that can help us all, not conspiracy crap that drives me
up.
We didn't think that if we slowed down the theme song, it would cut right into
the live broadcast here. We ran out of picture. Good evening, everybody. Good
evening, Doug. Hello. And good evening, Vic and Matt. This is a nice change of
pace. How does it feel? It feels like we're maybe have some jet lag or
something.
I don't like it.
Hi, everybody. Thanks for being here on this emergency broadcast. You know,
where do we begin? This is going to be a bit of a different show. Saturday
night, things exploded on Twitter. And as much as you can laugh at that and say
that is completely meaningless.
That is fucking sick.
It riled me up beyond belief. It got me thinking. It got me to a place where I
wanted to resolve it some way, somehow. And I'm sitting here thinking, well, I
have a show. We do it generally Thursday mornings, but maybe I could go live.
I was thinking about doing like a periscope. We could talk about it. But I
talked to the guys. I said, what if we just come in Monday night and we do a
show and we talk about it and I asked...
I'm going to say no. What's this? Hi. Hi. Get them out. Get them out. I said,
guys, it's not going to be a sort of a drop heavy show.
Okay. So get them out.
Okay. By the way, it's a thousand degrees in here. It really is. It's so hot
because I have an air conditioner that I forgot to turn on. I just turned it on
about a half hour ago. So it's, we're going to look like Trump talking to Chris
Wallace. We're going to be flop sweating like pigs. And people are going to say,
oh,
Oh, so you came on your show to defend yourself and your Hollywood friends, but
look at how sweaty and red and your shirt's sopping wet.
And your shirt's sopping wet. We keep it in tip top shape. Call it sometimes tippy
top shape. Tippy top shape. What are you doing? Oh, you weren't recording you
scumbag.
Oh boy. We lost. Oh man. The one thing you're supposed to do. Start it over.
Ladies and gentlemen, we're now, so, so I, uh, I've asked,
I've asked still hot out there. Thank you. Thank you for the wet. Just these
guys were so they were so, um, obliging to me. So no, we understand it's
important subject.
We're going to take it seriously. And here they are. They're just flying
through there. I have sinned against you.
No, what, here's what I want. And, and, and, and Vic, please. Okay. I know it's,
you know, I know who it is Larry. Yeah. Yeah. Recognize that scream.
Um, I kind of want this video to be something that maybe I could send to people
when they come at me with these, uh, crazy accusations. I want to say, if you're
interested, if you want to do research on me, which you can, which they won't.
Hey, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm trying to appeal to their better angels or the
better angels or any kind of whatever is in them that might makes them curious.
That makes them interested in getting the whole picture and the whole story. I'm
inviting them to this experience. I'm inviting them to this experience and
saying, you guys are also really loud on the board.
Um, and I'm saying, come watch this show. I'm going to explain a little bit of
what I'm about, how I understand the things you believe and have a conversation.
Uh, my guest is a, uh, an expert on the subject, I believe of, of Q. He's done
a lot of research on it.
All right. That's enough. And it's really, it's who cares what that was? What
was that?
We're not into the meat of the show yet. Um, it was the church lady.
How convenient.
Let's welcome to our show, um, Robbie Martin from, uh, Media Roots Radio.
Uh, Robbie is a journalist and somebody that's put a lot of energy and time
into studying the roots of, uh, the origins of QAnon.
And, uh, I highly recommend his podcast that you can find media roots radio on
the, uh, yes, media, media roots radio.
I was trying to focus, but I hear, uh, I was applauding for the guest. He
deserves some applause.
Um, Robbie, are you there? Oh, wait, is he coming in from space? No, he's, I
have him up, Matt.
Robbie, check two. Why? Well, he was just working a minute ago. Why does this
shit never work?
Oh, did we mute everything? No, it's all. That was me. Sorry.
Okay. Robbie. Yeah. Hi. Hi, Tim. Thank you. Thank you for inviting me on.
Yes. And, um, I just, I don't want to, uh, I do want to acknowledge, um, um,
something that happened today, uh, before we get into the meat of the show, uh,
Vic.
Uh oh. What made me shiver. I don't know. No, I mean, there's something wrong.
Uh, uh, a friend. No, I'm saying, I'm sorry. I, I, I, I shouldn't have put you
on the spot.
Okay. I'm sorry. Um, Michael Brooks, I just wanted to say for, for a second,
Michael Brooks from, um, majority report, Sam Seder suddenly passed away today.
I wanted to acknowledge that and him and know that, uh, you're a fan of his
work, Robbie. And I felt, I feel terrible. I'm a fan of his work as well and
feel terrible that we're talking on this day.
Um, but anyways, yeah, he's a, he was a great guy. Um, he will be very missed
by a lot of people in this community.
Uh, yeah. So I don't, I asked you, uh, that, you know, we don't want to sort of
go through the entire backstory and history of Q
of Q because my audience can, with a click, go to SoundCloud, to the media
roots, radio page, or type in the origins of QAnon or search Robbie Martin, I
guess.
Um, and it's just a tremendous, Doug turned me onto it and it's a tremendous
back history into the origins of this online movement.
Um, it's fair and balanced. Yeah. I mean, I don't know. I'll bring you guys
back up with, but, but to a, to a small degree. Okay.
You're out of time out. Um, but let me ask you without going into the whole
thing, Robbie, what, how did you become, because you, you cover all kinds of
things.
How did, how did this grab your attention? Why did it grab your attention to
the, to the degree that it did?
I think it goes back to like, when I first started, you know, getting really
into like just the internet in general, when I was probably in my early
twenties, my late teens, um, you know, conspiracy theories have always sort of
been intertwined with deep diving on the internet.
Um, it was always sort of just a interest of mine, a hobby of mine, um, looking
at conspiracy theories.
Um, and when I actually seriously got into journalism and politics, I started
to, you know, see people like Alex Jones, um, and later QAnon essentially
weaponizing and turning the entire internet conspiracy movement into like a
weapon for Trump.
Trump, which was extremely remarkable to me because all conspiracy theories,
generally speaking, never include a president as like the hero of that name.
Right. He's like the, the generally the fig, the top dog in the conspiracy or
in the, what's the, what the, the, the dark side of the conspiracy.
Yeah. So the, I mean, traditionally all conspiracies, you know, any government
conspiracy usually has no, it's no quarter meaning that it doesn't go.
It doesn't have a partisan lens. It's usually just everybody in the government
is probably corrupt.
Um, you know, whoever. So it's, this is what's really different about this is
it's, it's very partisan. It's basically acting as an arm of Trump's campaign
and it completely, it's completely different than the conspiracy theories that
we've seen in the past.
And it's also dangerously watering down like actual real things like the Epstein
scandal, this gives like actual thing.
And, you know, you know, we, you and I probably don't agree on everything, uh,
under the sun who would agree with everybody under the sun, but I think we can
all agree that there, there, there is like a global, you know, uh, power
dynamic that exists.
And the, you know, there are prob, there are like kind of problems in the world
and there's people that are, you know, making life hard for people there, there
certainly, you know, but it feels like they've just kind of missed it.
Right. They're just like going on this entirely different tangent.
Um, and, and, and it's a shame because somebody said to me, I think Matt, you
said, imagine if they spent this much time on real problems.
Right.
But we started very negative and my goal is my goal tonight is to at least, I
don't, I'm not coming, I'm not coming with an open mind about what Q thinks.
I'll be honest with you there, but I don't want people to be, uh, I don't want
people to be, uh, ostracized by the way we're talking about it.
That we're just discounting it and we don't hear you or we don't have sympathy
for the people out there that truly feel like they, that they're, that they
believe, uh, what they're hearing.
Because I do believe there are good people out there or who have good
intentions or who think that they are, um, on the right side of history.
And, you know, you want me to share this with you, Vic?
I got you, you need to boot it off the internet.
Yeah.
Sorry about that.
You know, like the, the, the, the guy, uh, that went into pizza, the pizza
comet pizza place, you know, to him, he was going to rescue children that were
trapped underneath the restaurant.
So, you know, as delusional as that feels to us, to him, there were, there
might've been a sense of like, I am super, I'm Superman.
I'm doing, uh, I'm, you know, I'm a citizen hero.
Um, so I don't want to just like laugh at, I mean, we do laugh at a lot of this
stuff and we've made fun of this movement a lot on this show.
Um, we've had KW Williams, who I do think is, you know, a joke.
He's not my joke, but he is a real person, but he is not coming from, I don't
believe he's coming from an authentic place of believing this stuff.
But I do believe from what I've seen that there are people that buy into it and
I have sympathy for them to some degree.
No, I, I totally relate to that because I mean, I, I used to be, you know, I
used to like seriously look into some of these conspiracy theories, you know,
10 years ago.
Um, some of them were very interesting to me.
There are actually a lot of credit people that were involved in, you know,
researching some of this stuff.
Like I'll just throw out a name, Paul Thompson.
Um, there's none of these people around anymore.
And I think you really hit on something that this really is preying on people
who feel that something is very wrong with the world right now, who feel maybe
really disempowered.
There is a real sense that things are going very badly that, you know, there,
there are bad actors in the world that want to harm people, um, that want to
disenfranchise people.
So I could totally understand why people are sort of drawn into this whole
thing.
I mean, it definitely, I think, preys on people who are already feeling that
something is very wrong and are looking for some kind of answers or.
Um, so the situation with me and I think to some degree, Vic, and I know to
some degree, not Doug.
Um, I don't think so.
Um, but you know, he until tonight, but we've been dealing with it, you know,
now for over four years, maybe a little longer, five years, but, um, it is been
something whether it was Q right away.
It probably wasn't, but it was certainly the online for Chan, um, you know,
Reddit slash the Donald, um, Pepe alt-right attacks, mostly because we were
fairly open, aggressively anti Trump and very outspoken and in our own ways,
quite disrespectful in our, you know, and rude.
I mean, so there was, I think a fair amount of back and forth, you know, name
calling and abuse online that often would go too far.
And I know, you know, shortly after 2016, I was dealing with people, uh,
threatening my life.
I know Vic, you had somebody show up in your front door.
Yeah.
Proud boy at my house at weird Mike Cernovich, you know, basically pizza gating
me.
So the pedophile.
Yeah.
So the pedophile thing, I can actually think of where I first became aware of
the pedophile thing, which was, I got into it online with Mike Cernovic
