Maybe I should.
Hi, everybody.
Maybe I should announce these.
I just jump on when I can.
I was going to go to the grocery store.
And on my way out, I thought, well, I'll come down here.
And play you guys a little song I'm working on.
It's not an original.
And it's not even an original song by him.
And it's a song I've become obsessed with trying to figure out how to play.
And so maybe to help me learn, I can play it for you.
And if you're a guitar player out there, it's a pretty neat song to figure out
how to play.
I mean, this isn't the best angle.
Maybe I can do it this way.
Hmm.
A little hard to...
I don't know how these people do this.
Many is the time I've been...
And so it's Paul Simon.
And then he is the American tune.
See, that's the...
See, that's the...
It's just really neat because it's pretty simple.
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
Oh, why is the sound not working?
Is the sound not working?
Are we...
Do we have sound?
Is there sound?
Yeah, it sounds fine.
Thank you.
Thank you, thank you.
Cleared up.
So, yeah.
Anyways, I get it.
It works.
It's this really simple...
If you're a guitar player...
Many is the time...
F, C, G, C...
Back to G, E...
Then you do this.
This is the most fun part.
D, D, D...
So you go...
D, D...
Yes.
Cole.
Oh, sacred head now wounded.
This is a Bach tune...
That Paul Simon rips off.
He's sort of the king of the rock.
He rips them all. He rips from the best. But how fun is it just to do this?
Do, do, do, do, do, do. Oh, it's all right. It's all right. I can be forever
blessed.
Still, you don't expect to be bright and bon, bon, bon. So far away from, far,
far away from home.
Watch this. So far away from home.
In a dream. And so that's kind of it. And then there's this bridge.
How is this American nobody's being exploited? I don't know.
Yeah, so I'm still learning it, but I'm just, it's such a, if you find a
million YouTube videos of him playing it, it's a little bit like, yeah, it's a
little like Blackbird.
So Blackbird is...
So this is a little harder than that because there's more things going on.
Let me get these lyrics closer.
Also, the lyrics of this song are unbelievably good.
So he goes,
Many is the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, I often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I'm alright
I'm alright, alright
It's really tricky
Alright
I'm just weary to my bones
Still you don't expect to be bright and bon vivant
Bon, bon vivant
So far away from home
So far away from home
So don't give me shit
I'm still learning this song
This isn't a performance of it
I'm teaching you how to play it
You can watch my hand
So then the second verse
And I don't know
And I don't know
And this part is like
Wow, this guy wrote this in what?
Seventy-four
Something like that
Seventy-three
And he gets with this second verse
Which is really unbelievable
And I don't know a soul who's not been better
Don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
Oh, but it's alright
It's alright
We've lived so well
So long
Still I think of all
Still
Still when I think of the road
We're traveling on
I wonder what
Went wrong
I can't help but wonder
And this is so cool
I'll get better at this
But this is in it
And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul
Rose unexpectedly
Unexpectedly
Looking back down at me
Smile reassuredly
This is it
Someone's going to ask for tips on finger picking
I would like tips on finger picking
I'm just faking it
Chicken scratch
This is a classic folky thing
There you go
Dillon does it all the time
Dillon does it all the time
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above
My eyes could clearly see
Statue of living
Statue of liberty
I was staring back down at me
And I dreamed I was flying
Thank you for my finger picking
But I really think I could
I'm only using like the thumb
And the pointer thing
You know I've got to get those other fingers working
And then the end verse
It goes
We come on the ship
They call the Mayflower
Now that's one part of the song
I never liked
I mean I love
It's just the
Just the phrasing
Of the word
Of the word
Excited for the Mr. America premiere tonight
What's that about?
Is that the
The Metrograph
Is doing a digital screening?
Somebody
I don't even
Know about that
Does somebody
Who said that?
Give us more information
I'll pass it along
Oh man
I wish I had
Some more
Arthur
Knew how to play
Some Arthur Russell
I should learn a few of those
So anyways
You get to the last verse here
We come on the ship
They call the Mayflower
Right?
I just don't like him
Squeezing in Mayflower
Come on the ship
That's called the Mayflower
Come on the ship
That's called Mayflower
I don't know
I wish there was a
Come on the ship
They call
I guess it works
With the syllables
But
Right?
That's just beautiful
Like this
I'm telling you
Yes, Arthur Russell
You know, I don't know
I just sort of got into him
His new
Newish record
That is a compilation
Of unreleased songs
Called Iowa Dream
Is phenomenal
It's full of
Just terrific
Songs
So we come on the ship
They call the Mayflower
We come on
We come on
Come on the ship
That sails the moon
We come in the age's
Most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, but it's alright
Sounds like a 12-year-old
But fuck off
You don't know
What the fuck
You're talking about
You piece of shit
So this is just an unbelievable
Little line there
So he goes
I mean, this is 1974
Maybe we're talking
Post-Vietnam
We're talking about
Watergate a little bit
So we come on
We come on the ship
They call Mayflower
We come on the ship
That sails the moon
We come in the age's
Most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, but it's alright
It's alright
You can be forever blessed
Still tomorrow's gonna be enough
See, this run is really great
Especially at the end here
He does this
Still tomorrow's gonna be enough
Still tomorrow's gonna, gonna be another
Work, another
Work, work, work
Uh, workin' day
Workin' day
And I'm tryin' to get
Some, try, tryin' to, tryin' to get
Some rest
That's all I'm
And it was
And that's all I'm tryin'
To get some rest
So
So let's try that again
More Than Words by Extremo
Yeah, I mean
It's a lot
A lot of that fingerpicking
Harmonizing
More Than Words
Whoa
Yeah, but
So we come on
We come on the ship
They call Mayflower
Come on the ship
That sailed the moon
We come in
We come in
The age's most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, but it's all right
And then he goes
It's all right, all right
You can be forever blessed
and that's kind of this little climb which he goes and then to the a7 make it
imagine and then d7
to get some rest that's all that's all i'm trying to get some rest and then he
does this thing which he
does and he does this in um time it was and what a time it was it was a do do
do do do do do do right
um but he does this at the end i don't have this all figured out but he goes
something like that
something so that's american tune by the great paul simon um i'm just i try to
play it you know try
to with a few minutes i'll try to play it uh i'm sitting around um i did look
up a lot of this stuff
online right now you see the internet's very helpful for this so many many is
the time i've been mistaken
i've gotten many times confused yes and i often felt mistakes they come
they come and certainly misused and then the c9 oh
i'm just weird to my bones
i'm just weird to my bones
that's what always tricks me up because he stays on the g twice
so far away from home
so far away from home
so this is a little sneak
so this is a little i'll play a little sample of a song from the new record
we have a few minutes left
so this is this is the trouble i had i wrote this i wrote this it's called
little lamb
and it's going to sound a lot better a lot better on the record when uh you
hear the full production
so the problem with this is i recorded this with drew and natalie right here in
this room
now i can do
i can do that for a little while
you know i can
but eventually
i'm gonna it up
especially especially when i'm singing
right
especially when you're recording
that's why i don't play a lot of instruments on my records because there's just
better people
and then so so that's like the lick and uh brian from the lemon twigs ends up
singing that one
i mean i'm sorry sorry it sends up playing that one
so the song goes like this and i won't play that lick
the song goes like this i'm sorry i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't like to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
you've been nipping at my heels
i can't think how it feels to see me gone
ooh i'm moving on
i'm moving quick can't stand still
if you can't keep up well someone else out there will
go run back home be with your own
i could use some time alone
right oh little lamb
oh little lamb it'll be sad to see you go
but you more than anyone should know
i don't have time to move so slow
i'm moving quick can't stand still
if you can't keep up well someone else out there will
go run back home be with your own
i could use some time
so that is a little that's me and natalie singing harmony on that one
and that is a sort of a song about a lot of you people
it's a lot of people who write and say they don't like what i'm doing
or they're not a fan of my music
you've been following me so long
reminding me who i am who i was and who i am
who i am not anymore
right and then i'm moving quick
can't stand still if you can't keep up well someone else
out there will go run back home be with your own
i could use some time alone
so there you go that's a new one
i'll take some superchat uh requests if you have any what did this person just
ask for uh no he just said thanks
well you're welcome that's a sneak peek of the new record just played you
a little darkness oh you want to hear rocky raccoon i hate rocky raccoon

home ain't where i'm living
it ain't where i want to be
and some of them can be forgiven for what they've done to me
i'm coming back
all dressed in black
but i didn't think to back my funeral shoes
i signed the guest book
then i'm off the hook
i'll hide my feet beneath the pillars
then i'm gonna take the next flight out of here
i'm gonna go back to the sunshine
won't come back east until the other one bites the dust
it's a place that village or sand
means nothing to me anymore
only a memory
just a pile of rubble and rust
home ain't where i'm living
ain't where i want to be
i'm coming back
i'm coming back
i'm coming back
all dressed in black
but i didn't think to pack my funeral shoes
say my goodbyes
say my goodbyes
without a tear in my eyes
oh good god what can i do
that one i've been playing a lot lately
so i was able to sneak through it
sneaking through without too many problems
do i know any pavement songs i don't really know i mean i love pavement i don't

closer
i mean what's better than that
i just put on it i didn't you know
who sits around listening to fucking buddy holly
i put on that album it's just one album he put out called buddy holly and i
mean it had some singles on it

oh tobin and the judge
i mean it's pretty that's all it is it's two chords
what's the first line of that song that was always that that's how i remember
how to play anything if you tell me the first line of something watching those

you should write a song with ezra from uh
vampire weekend and i love that vampire weekend record
father of the bride so
and i've gotten to know him a little bit so
i was thinking i have this one song i think could become
could would make a nice song for them but
the heat's so bad here
that the guitar does not want to stay in two
but it would be
yeah and also it's a little redundant of my this record i'm doing now so it's
like
i don't know if i want to do another song about death but
oh oh oh when i die will you remember me
will you even have to try to keep me in your memory

wrote all that i
sung and all that i spoke it'll live on for years and years it'll all get piled
away
lost someday oh oh when i die will you remember me do you even have to try

Billy Bob, Billy Bob. Oh, no. Billy Bob's in the box tops. Billy Bob's so sweet.
Billy Bobbin, Billy Bobbin. What's that movie called? Billy Bobbin. Oh, shit.

He's sleek bait too. He's got married too. Married too. Married too. Married to
Elaine. Married to the daughter. Oh.
What's his name? What's his name?
What's his name?
Mary. His father-in-law is with John.
No, uh, what's his father-in-law's name?
What's his father-in-law's name?
What's his father-in-law's name?
His father-in-law is with John.
No, uh, what's his father-in-law's name?
What's his father-in-law's name?
His father-in-law is with John.
No, uh, what's his father-in-law's name?
His father-in-law is with John.

His father-in-law is with John.

His father-in-law is with John.

You were here first when you heard the very first draft, this demo.
This is sort of like my voice memo for Billy Bob, Billy Bob, Billy Bob, ooh.
Sometimes you gotta stick with it, you know?
You just gotta play around for a while.
Billy Bob, Billy Bob, ooh.
Sling blade, monster's ball in far gold.
I said I'm Billy Bob, Billy Bob, ooh.
Billy Bob, Billy Bob.
Okay.
Billy Bob, bye everybody.
Happy Labor Day.
See you, we'll be off this week.
See you for office hours next week.
I love it.
I love you.
Bye.

American Tune

Maybe I should.
Hi, everybody.
Maybe I should announce these.
I just jump on when I can.
I was going to go to the grocery store.
And on my way out, I thought, well, I'll come down here.
And play you guys a little song I'm working on.
It's not an original.
And it's not even an original song by him.
And it's a song I've become obsessed with trying to figure out how to play.
And so maybe to help me learn, I can play it for you.
And if you're a guitar player out there, it's a pretty neat song to figure out
how to play.
I mean, this isn't the best angle.
Maybe I can do it this way.
Hmm.
A little hard to...
I don't know how these people do this.
Many is the time I've been...
And so it's Paul Simon.
And then he is the American tune.
See, that's the...
See, that's the...
It's just really neat because it's pretty simple.
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
Oh, why is the sound not working?
Is the sound not working?
Are we...
Do we have sound?
Is there sound?
Yeah, it sounds fine.
Thank you.
Thank you, thank you.
Cleared up.
So, yeah.
Anyways, I get it.
It works.
It's this really simple...
If you're a guitar player...
Many is the time...
F, C, G, C...
Back to G, E...
Then you do this.
This is the most fun part.
D, D, D...
So you go...
D, D...
Yes.
Cole.
Oh, sacred head now wounded.
This is a Bach tune...
That Paul Simon rips off.
He's sort of the king of the rock.
He rips them all. He rips from the best. But how fun is it just to do this?
Do, do, do, do, do, do. Oh, it's all right. It's all right. I can be forever
blessed.
Still, you don't expect to be bright and bon, bon, bon. So far away from, far,
far away from home.
Watch this. So far away from home.
In a dream. And so that's kind of it. And then there's this bridge.
How is this American nobody's being exploited? I don't know.
Yeah, so I'm still learning it, but I'm just, it's such a, if you find a
million YouTube videos of him playing it, it's a little bit like, yeah, it's a
little like Blackbird.
So Blackbird is...
So this is a little harder than that because there's more things going on.
Let me get these lyrics closer.
Also, the lyrics of this song are unbelievably good.
So he goes,
Many is the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, I often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I'm alright
I'm alright, alright
It's really tricky
Alright
I'm just weary to my bones
Still you don't expect to be bright and bon vivant
Bon, bon vivant
So far away from home
So far away from home
So don't give me shit
I'm still learning this song
This isn't a performance of it
I'm teaching you how to play it
You can watch my hand
So then the second verse
And I don't know
And I don't know
And this part is like
Wow, this guy wrote this in what?
Seventy-four
Something like that
Seventy-three
And he gets with this second verse
Which is really unbelievable
And I don't know a soul who's not been better
Don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
Oh, but it's alright
It's alright
We've lived so well
So long
Still I think of all
Still
Still when I think of the road
We're traveling on
I wonder what
Went wrong
I can't help but wonder
And this is so cool
I'll get better at this
But this is in it
And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul

And then the end verse
It goes
We come on the ship
They call the Mayflower
Now that's one part of the song
I never liked
I mean I love
It's just the
Just the phrasing
Of the word
Of the word
Excited for the Mr. America premiere tonight
What's that about?
Is that the
The Metrograph
Is doing a digital screening?
Somebody
I don't even
Know about that
Does somebody
Who said that?
Give us more information
I'll pass it along
Oh man
I wish I had
Some more
Arthur
Knew how to play
Some Arthur Russell
I should learn a few of those
So anyways
You get to the last verse here
We come on the ship
They call the Mayflower
Right?
I just don't like him
Squeezing in Mayflower
Come on the ship
That's called the Mayflower
Come on the ship
That's called Mayflower
I don't know
I wish there was a
Come on the ship
They call
I guess it works
With the syllables
But
Right?
That's just beautiful
Like this
I'm telling you
Yes, Arthur Russell
You know, I don't know
I just sort of got into him
His new
Newish record
That is a compilation
Of unreleased songs
Called Iowa Dream
Is phenomenal
It's full of
Just terrific
Songs
So we come on the ship
They call the Mayflower
We come on
We come on
Come on the ship
That sails the moon
We come in the age's
Most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, but it's alright
Sounds like a 12-year-old
But fuck off
You don't know
What the fuck
You're talking about
You piece of shit
So this is just an unbelievable
Little line there
So he goes
I mean, this is 1974
Maybe we're talking
Post-Vietnam
We're talking about
Watergate a little bit
So we come on
We come on the ship
They call Mayflower
We come on the ship
That sails the moon
We come in the age's
Most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, but it's alright
It's alright
You can be forever blessed
Still tomorrow's gonna be enough
See, this run is really great
Especially at the end here
He does this
Still tomorrow's gonna be enough
Still tomorrow's gonna, gonna be another
Work, another
Work, work, work
Uh, workin' day
Workin' day
And I'm tryin' to get
Some, try, tryin' to, tryin' to get
Some rest
That's all I'm
And it was
And that's all I'm tryin'
To get some rest
So
So let's try that again
More Than Words by Extremo
Yeah, I mean
It's a lot
A lot of that fingerpicking
Harmonizing
More Than Words
Whoa
Yeah, but
So we come on
We come on the ship
They call Mayflower
Come on the ship
That sailed the moon
We come in
We come in
The age's most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, but it's all right
And then he goes
It's all right, all right
You can be forever blessed
and that's kind of this little climb which he goes and then to the a7 make it
imagine and then d7
to get some rest that's all that's all i'm trying to get some rest and then he
does this thing which he
does and he does this in um time it was and what a time it was it was a do do
do do do do do do right
um but he does this at the end i don't have this all figured out but he goes
something like that
something so that's american tune by the great paul simon um i'm just i try to
play it you know try
to with a few minutes i'll try to play it uh i'm sitting around um i did look
up a lot of this stuff
online right now you see the internet's very helpful for this so many many is
the time i've been mistaken
i've gotten many times confused yes and i often felt mistakes they come
they come and certainly misused and then the c9 oh
i'm just weird to my bones
i'm just weird to my bones
that's what always tricks me up because he stays on the g twice
so far away from home
so far away from home
so this is a little sneak
so this is a little i'll play a little sample of a song from the new record
we have a few minutes left
so this is this is the trouble i had i wrote this i wrote this it's called
little lamb
and it's going to sound a lot better a lot better on the record when uh you
hear the full production
so the problem with this is i recorded this with drew and natalie right here in
this room
now i can do
i can do that for a little while
you know i can
but eventually
i'm gonna it up
especially especially when i'm singing
right
especially when you're recording
that's why i don't play a lot of instruments on my records because there's just
better people
and then so so that's like the lick and uh brian from the lemon twigs ends up
singing that one
i mean i'm sorry sorry it sends up playing that one
so the song goes like this and i won't play that lick
the song goes like this i'm sorry i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't like to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
so i don't want to be a little girl
you've been nipping at my heels
i can't think how it feels to see me gone
ooh i'm moving on
i'm moving quick can't stand still
if you can't keep up well someone else out there will
go run back home be with your own
i could use some time alone
right oh little lamb
oh little lamb it'll be sad to see you go
but you more than anyone should know
i don't have time to move so slow
i'm moving quick can't stand still
if you can't keep up well someone else out there will
go run back home be with your own
i could use some time
so that is a little that's me and natalie singing harmony on that one
and that is a sort of a song about a lot of you people
it's a lot of people who write and say they don't like what i'm doing
or they're not a fan of my music
you've been following me so long
reminding me who i am who i was and who i am
who i am not anymore
right and then i'm moving quick
can't stand still if you can't keep up well someone else
out there will go run back home be with your own
i could use some time alone
so there you go that's a new one
i'll take some superchat uh requests if you have any what did this person just
ask for uh no he just said thanks
well you're welcome that's a sneak peek of the new record just played you
a little darkness oh you want to hear rocky raccoon i hate rocky raccoon
somewhere somewhere in the deep man from north dakota left a young boy named
rocky raccoon
one day his woman went off with another guy

oh rocky raccoon he lived in his room oh and he was shot ouch hey
right here i come lay down in his room
only to grab the root only to find gidgin's babble
that's all i got that's all i got that's all i got that's all i got it is
how about in honor of uh

you're out of the right here you're out of the right here you're out of the
right here
you're out of the right here you're out of the right here you're out of the

the right here
how are the pit stains i don't know i'm wearing this weird patagonia shirt
flex it flex off the sweat
gonna get take out for lunch gonna get taken out for dinner gonna get breakfast
in bed with whoever i'm
i'm gonna get home i'm gonna get home i'm gonna get drunk with my mother and
father
then i'm gonna run through the lawn of the house where we used to live
home ain't where i'm living
it ain't where i want to be
and some of them can be forgiven for what they've done to me
i'm coming back
all dressed in black
but i didn't think to back my funeral shoes
i signed the guest book
then i'm off the hook
i'll hide my feet beneath the pillars
then i'm gonna take the next flight out
