On the morning of May 18th, 2022, Office Hours Live issued a challenge to the
rock band Pavement.
22 minutes later, they accepted.
This historic match pitted the biggest indie music icons of the 1990s
against the biggest all-comedy icons of the 2000s.
So here's how it's going to go. Doug and Tim in three.
Tim Heidecker, DJ Dog Pound, versus Steven Malkmus and Bob Nastinovich.
And Celebrity Ball Boys, Steve West and Vic Berger IV.
Due to time constraints, the players agreed to the terms of a half set.
The first team to reach three games would win.
Now you gotta spin the racket. Then we'll use the weird racket.
Oh, okay. See, this guy's a pro.
You do it. It's M or W. That's what you say.
What do you want, Bob? M or W?
M.
M for mustard.
It's W. So you get to choose what you want to do.
You want to serve? Generally, people choose to serve.
Yeah, we'll serve.
Okay.
Game one.
Malk misplaced the net with ease to lock in the first game.
Pavement one. Office hour is nothing.
Game two.
Okay, Doug.
Hang. Hold it. Hold the line.
Tensions begin to mount as Heidecker's emotions rise.
Go, Bobby!
Heidecker challenge his anger into his signature move, the wall.
The aggressive play lands his team another point.
Out!
Out!
Oh!
Woo!
Man, that was a good play.
Nice play.
540.
Good.
Thank you.
An unfortunate shot into the net by Malkmus evens the match at 1-1.
Wow!
1-1, motherfucker!
Very exciting. No blowout here.
We're coming back.
Game three.
Beautiful.
That was a good one.
Beautiful.
15, love.
Ah!
Point.
8 minutes.
Ball boy.
Dick.
Time for pop.
Let's close this field.
Uh, 43.
Oh, nice!
Oh!
Hey!
Hey!
Hey!
Point office hours.
Game four.
Oh!
Heidecker's raw emotion on the court takes its toll.
I don't know if I have it in me.
His teammate and opponent offer encouragement.
I might.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
Oh, shit.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
You got it.
Point pavement.
What a story.
The communication breakdown leads to a devastating missed opportunity.
Ballboy Steve West stalks the court like a cheetah, looking to give his bandmates
an edge.
You got it.
You got it.
That's it.
Nastinovich pounces, landing a backhand for a point.
Good shot of the match for you.
Good shot.
Is that the game?
Kim's blood pressure rises.
There we go.
Confusion sweeps team office hours.
What's the game?
50?
This is all new for me.
Win.
It goes 15, 30, 40.
Why not?
40, 30.
Then advantage.
So the first half of the game is like more valuable than the rest, right?
Ballboy Vic Berger sows more chaos.
Shh.
Quiet, please.
His co-host shush him.
A flaccid shot in the net by Doug blows their lead and ties the match at 2-2.
That's simple.
That's simple.
It's easy.
Game five.
Heidegger doesn't have much gas left in the tank.
That was sinister.
That was sinister.
Point pavement.
Malchmus doesn't even break a sweat.
Let's bring out the podcast gear and put lobs on all of us.
Yeah.
You're the ones with the schedule.
Shots fired.
Love 40.
This is it.
Yep.
It all comes down to this.
Match point.
I got it.
A devastating loss on the Office Hours home court.
Ah!
Ah!
Ah!
I wanted that!
Haven takes the game 3-2 and Heidegger finally breaks down completely.
Ah!
Ah!
The unsportsmanlike display is a disgrace.
Despite the unsportsmanlike conduct, Pavement agrees to join Office Hours in
studio for a post-game interview.
Here's something I want to do with everybody in the room.
And I think it's something we can do throughout the show.
I don't think we have to just do it right now.
I think we've got to rank the Pavement records.
Hmm.
Very good.
Well done, guys.
You're good, man.
Really tricky slice, man, like, really tricky slice.
