Chapo Trap House, Daniel Romano (Office Hours Live Ep 223)

I'll get your word straight, Jack.
It's really something to see.
Oh boy.
Holy shit.
I got them $1.9 trillion of relief so far, but pay your fair share.
He hasn't.
Not at all.
I wrote the bill.
Oh shit.
Hmm.
Don't lose those.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Right.
I like having fun.
I like to laugh.
Hey.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, good luckin'.
What you got cookin'?
Hope you're cookin' up somethin' really, really good for me.
Hub, hub, hub, hub, hub, hub, hub.
There it is.
The reverb is workin' today.
Good morning, everybody.
Tim Heidecker here.
It is October 6th.
First show of the month, folks.
It's showtime.
Is that correct?
Yes, it's October.
And it was a September to remember here in the Office Hours community.
We had just piles and piles of fun, lots of great guests, and I just want you
to remember
that.
If you haven't watched the show in a while, go back and catch up on our
interviews with
Tenacious D and many others.
There's Reggie Watts.
Who else did we have in the month of September?
Some big ones.
Jay Weingarten again.
Jay was here.
Skinner.
Did you say Tenacious D?
Leonard Skinner.
Yes, Skinner was here.
And we're not stopping, folks, because we have a banger of a show today, as
everybody likes
to say.
A banger.
Everybody.
It's lit.
It's lit here.
It is lit.
It's off the hook.
And all the rest, we've got the Chapo Boys here, Will and Matt from the Chapo
Gang.
Hello.
Pleased to be here.
And of course, excuse me.
They're here.
They're not speaking yet.
What the fuck?
Let's just follow the script.
I keep doing that dumb joke that there's a script.
But it amuses me, Doug.
I want to welcome you to the show.
You've got new toys, always new toys.
Where did you get that new toy?
Good horning.
Ooh.
You got a new toy?
Oh, I got this from Reggie Watts last week.
That's how we do.
We barter.
Mm-hmm.
And we give and we share and we sell and we...
It's like an Arabian market here after the show.
Amazing.
Victor Berger IV.
Check in with me, buddy.
What's up, everybody?
Now, let me ask you about these unnecessary buttons you have on your shirt.
There's a lot.
There's a lot of buttons.
Extra buttons.
What are you...
Those top buttons there.
These are...
Yeah.
I'm looking at these boys up here.
Top.
These?
No, those make sense.
Those don't make sense, Steve.
Those are dummy pockets.
They don't do anything.
Well, they...
They actually don't do anything.
I understand that.
But...
I understand that.
Okay.
But aesthetically, they're placed well.
But those two up top, do you see what I'm talking about?
Oh, these.
These boys.
This morning, I was trying to, like, button these together.
I thought it was...
But it wasn't.
But there's no...
There's no reason.
Even more...
Like, on the back right now.
Like, why?
What are we going to do with these extra buttons?
They had extra buttons.
You had to put them somewhere.
It came with that little baggie with five extra buttons.
So, if a button falls off, or four, or five, I can...
You know, no problem.
This shit sucks.
I love that it's just, like, my favorite shirt right now.
Really?
Yeah, yeah.
It looks uncomfortable to me.
What the fuck?
I don't know.
Just let me see, let me feel the fabric.
No, it's comfy.
No way.
Come on.
No way.
Don't rain on my parade.
Sorry.
Did they charge you extra for the more buttons?
No, it was just give.
It was, like...
You've got a lot of buttons.
You look...
You're getting a deal.
That's true.
I got some buttons here.
That's the thing.
But these are utilitarian buttons.
See, these are actually...
There's a purpose for these buttons.
You kind of look like a director.
You look like Steven Spielberg a little bit.
Maybe, yeah.
Cut.
Here, wait.
Damn it.
Here, use this as your viewfinder.
Cut the tape.
Let's see here.
Yeah.
Okay, there we go.
What do we think, Steve?
Do we have a shot?
I think we do it as a winner.
Roll, print, cut.
Okay.
Now make that kid cry so you get a good performance.
Hey, just wondering what you imagine.
Your parents are dead.
Your parents are dead.
You'll never see them again.
All right, roll.
Quit being a baby about the squids.
Yeah, really.
Who to...
Yeah, that's...
That's my new catchphrase.
Yeah, really.
All right, what else?
Matt, do we have anything else to go over?
Or can we begin the show?
We're ready.
Let's go.
Let's get into it.
I want to start with thankful prayer.
Oh.
I'm thankful for Vic.
All right, let's move on with the show.
We have to keep our country gate tripping.
Matt, let's just kick it off with a Zoomer real quick.
It's not what anyone wants.
China!
Well, nobody has topics, so this is going to be a real crap shoot.
Let's go with Adam Land.
Cool.
Hold it right back.
Two fellows named Adam Land.
Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
It's huge.
Can you hear us?
Yes, loud and clear, boys.
Wow, this is huge.
Huge day for us.
We're long-time listeners.
First time, third time Zoomers, or fourth time.
All right.
Huge day.
One, two, three.
What are you doing today?
What's going on at home?
Man, I'm waiting for an update to download on my watch.
It'll just grow on my door.
Just waiting around for that, huh?
Busy dead.
Yeah, yes, sir.
Yes, sir.
We're in the future, don't we, folks?
Waiting for our watches to download.
Yeah.
What exciting new updates are you hoping to get out of this watch?
There's allegedly a bug fixed, so it's not going to just be crashing.
All right.
Fuck, DPM time?
We're going to now post-meridian?
All right.
I'm happy for you.
I actually like my iWatch.
I know I call it the iWatch.
That's not what it's called.
I'm excited.
But I like it because it does my, as my fitness regime gets more sincere and
earnest, it is this thing that makes you feel bad if you don't close these
rings.
It works for us.
I was curious, like, does he have anything else besides telling us about his
watch?
Or is there, you know?
No, he has nothing.
He's getting a new ceiling fan installed.
They're there to take the old one out.
Last week, we got this piece of shit now.
Nice.
You got them both in there.
Where are you calling from?
Full of bulbs.
Oh, we're in the heart of the country here in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Nice.
Yes, sir.
You coming out here on any tour dates?
No.
No.
Good call.
We play, Eric and I played there.
Were you at the show in Indianapolis a couple years ago?
No, I was in Chicago a couple years ago.
All right.
Well, we'll move on.
Speaking of Chicago, the Chapo Boys are in the middle, would you consider
yourself in the middle of a world tour?
We're in the middle of a tour.
We're in the shit right now.
And are you just flying around?
Yeah.
You're not on a bus.
No, no, no.
We take plays.
It's four Saturdays in October in a row.
This is not a tour, my friend.
No, we've done those.
This is what Jay Leno does on the weekends.
Basically, yeah.
Yeah, it's a first for us.
We're trying it out differently because we've done the whole thing in one.
Yeah, we will be showing up to each venue, though, in a Model T Ford, though,
like by now.
Awooka.
Hey, everybody.
We love cars.
We love cars, folks.
You do love cars.
Yeah, you know.
Who doesn't?
This is, you know, I'm going to share for the first time now.
It's like each member of Chapo Trap House owns probably 300 vintage cars.
Really?
The hardest part is where to store them.
Yeah, I know.
Where to keep them.
Yeah, I know.
We like to reenact the cartoon Wacky Races.
Do you remember that one?
Yeah.
Yeah, we'll just go around in circles.
I bet you guys could develop that into a Discovery Plus show.
Top Gear.
Top Gear, yes.
But you're doing the Ace Theater this Saturday?
This Saturday.
Yeah, so great.
The Asexual Theater this Saturday.
I'm doing that with you, so I don't know what the hell I'm going to do.
I don't know, what do you want me to do?
Do you want me to tell stories?
Yeah, just hang out.
Just hang out.
Just be seen?
Yeah.
Just want me to be seen.
Could you do like 90 minutes of unplanned improv?
Of new material?
Of new material?
Yeah.
Okay.
I love that.
I got nothing, so.
You're going to introduce a couple of new characters?
Yeah.
Are there lulls in your show, or is it just firing 100?
I mean, if all goes as well, this is a no-lull experience that we're promising.
I could imagine a couple of lulls.
What is the show?
How do you describe it?
Is it just you guys bullshitting?
Yeah, I think that's it.
Yeah, I mean.
Do you have some stuff planned?
Yeah, no, we planned stuff.
We do have recorded pieces and more structured bits, but then the heart of the
live show is
still basically the podcast.
We're just going after it.
We're riffing.
And people love seeing you.
They go crazy for it.
Do you sell merch?
We do.
I hope that we are this time.
We do, but we have none of these tour dates.
Really?
Yeah.
You're leaving a lot of money on the table.
Tell me about it.
We're blowing it.
Well, I sell merch, of course, but much of it goes to charity.
What charity?
The human fun.
I thought we would play a game or just a topic of interest with the boys later
in the show,
because we have other business to get to, but if you guys out there can join us
as we
go around the world.
I'm just, because these guys know so much about what's going on.
I've dropped out of paying attention.
Smart.
Good move.
I'm so self-centered and really just self-involved.
And my children are taking up a lot of my time, more time than I'd ever wanted,
I'll say.
But we're going to check in on the global affairs, stuff here at home.
I mean, there's these races, these candidates that are running for office.
Yes, midterm elections.
I want to get your 10 cents on that.
10 cents on that.
That's cool.
Also, by the way, this Daniel Romano.
You're thinking, what is this guy?
Some mobster?
Dan Romano's coming here.
He's going to pop me.
Put a 44 in my back.
Daniel Romano, was he quirky's brother?
Ooh, quirky.
Quirky brother.
That's a quirky observation.
Him and his group, they're playing tonight at the Zebulon here in town.
And you know I have my issues with Zebulon, but I still think you should go out
and see him.
Have you checked in on the olives?
Yeah.
The olives situation?
We're not even going to get into it.
Well, I will get into it for your sake.
Give them a heads up.
They do a pizza there.
Now, think about this.
With pitted, no, un-pitted.
Un-pitted olives.
Just fucking olives on the pizza.
That's a hazard.
Yeah, it did.
It literally, because it's dark in there.
It's dark in there.
I get the pizza.
And it also doesn't say there are olives on there.
It's not like you're ordering an olive pizza.
They just throw them on it?
They're just throwing olives on everyone's pizza?
Why?
There might be like a subtitle with everything in there.
It's not a name, though.
No, it's not olive pizza.
I took a bite.
And I've complained to the police.
I mean, I would have, too.
Like, it didn't happen to me, because, you know,
I stand my ground.
No, the Castle Doctrine.
If you're attacking me with olives,
I have a right to self-defense.
I was dropping my kids off at school this morning,
and there's this little intersection
about two blocks away from the school.
I'm doing this, as you can see.
And it's a mess.
It's like a traffic mess.
Like, there needs to be a light there.
And there's this old guy filming,
and he's doing like a, he's like,
this is a disgrace.
The city of Glendale needs to do something about this.
Cars are coming, and it's chaos.
I loved it.
I loved it.
Was he the one holding up traffic, though?
Or was he just in the middle of the show?
No, no.
He's not holding up traffic.
All right.
Daniel Romano and The Outfit,
which is his group.
They're coming in here.
They sound checked.
Was that beautiful?
Oh, my goodness.
It was weird for a treat, folks.
It was no Bob Weir and John Mayer,
that's for sure.
Whoa.
I saw that.
I saw them at Dodger Stadium.
What do you mean?
You went to the Dodger Company.
Oh, interesting.
I had free tickets.
I did not pay to see that.
Well, give me your feedback.
They know how to make the best guitar faces
in the industry.
I think G.E. Smith would like to check in with you
