79: Carmen Christopher Asks Joy Tactics To Critique His Special

This one's going to be pretty crazy, we can't start it normal, like, it must be
crazy.
Welcome to Joy Tactics, the podcast dedicated to all things joyful, joyous, and
meeting as many
celebrities as humanly possible. Hosted by Eric Rahill, Nate Veroni, and Jack Bensinger.
Enjoy.
Well, I mean, this is a pretty special episode. I mean, this is like, this is
one of the most
special episodes I think we've ever done. And if you're tapped into the YouTube
show right
now, you can see that there's a fourth square. That's right. So it's a good day
on Joy Tactics.
We have none other than one of the funniest people on planet Earth. I'm not
even fucking
around right now. We got Carmen Christopher on the podcast. Carmen, thanks for
coming on,
hopping on. What's up, fellas? Thanks for having me. It's an honor to be here
with three of the
greatest comedians to ever do it. People are going to look back at this podcast
and say,
how the fuck did they get those four guys together?
Well, we all met on the bear. All of us were on the bear.
Oh, that's right. This is sort of bear alumni.
Yo, I've been doing...
Everybody that listens to this podcast is obsessed with the bear.
Really?
Yeah, that's right. This is sort of like half bear, half Joy Tactics fans.
Do you guys... I told this story now on this other podcast called The Daily
Beast and I was on the
CBS Chicago News yesterday. I was promoting my special. Sorry, plug it so early.
But I've been
telling this secret and I think I should... Nobody... I don't know if anybody
actually listens to those,
so I kind of want to tell it here again. Is that weird if I tell a little
behind-the-scenes bear stuff?
Say it now, please.
If you guys want a little behind-the-scenes peek into the bear, I was actually
cast as the lead,
Carmi. My name is Carmen. The character is a little bit like based on my life
or whatever.
So we went and we shot the pilot and I was the lead, right? But I'm a method
actor and I actually
have a lot of food allergies. So when I went and took a scoop of one of the
sauces and ate it,
I got this crazy allergic reaction and my head blew up like Betty Boop. And
basically the guys
couldn't keep their hands off me and it became a huge distraction. And all the
women were jealous
that I was looking real cute on set. So it became a distraction. So I stepped
down and I told Chris
Store, I says, hey, I've become a distraction. Why don't I play Chester, the
pastry chef's roommate?
But they actually, they shot for the two seasons of you with the big head.
Right. And the polka dot. You had the polka dot dress?
Yeah, I had the polka dot dress.
And like, I don't know. It was just like, people were like salivating from the
mouth and
they were just like trying to hit it. They were trying to hit it the whole time.
You recommended Jeremy Allen White, right? He was a struggling actor.
Like a young actor.
You were like, let me help you out.
I was like, you're going to be resistant to this, but if you trust me and you
pick him,
this man will become the biggest star in the world.
And he straight up did. He straight up did.
Dude, it makes perfect sense because I remember watching this, the first season
on the first
nine or ten watches. I remember thinking like, damn, this is hella similar to
Carmen's real
ass life story memoir book.
Oh yeah, it does.
Working my way through.
Except for the part about, because in the bear, the guy's brother commits
suicide, but you
murdered your brother.
So I'm like, how did, where did that, I wonder when they did that, I guess it's
because
sympathy. You want to have a likable.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You know, you know, what is funny is that we did all audition for Chester.
Whatever your part.
We were like,
Nate told me, Nate told me this. That's crazy.
It's because you guys were all getting crunk and loose and probably in Costa
Rica.
They probably got seven auditions that were very similar.
They were like, well,
I don't think we've said this before.
Like we were, we were all in Costa Rica.
Jack, Jack was not, but we all got the audition for this part for Carmen's role
at Chester.
And, and it was like three guys, like me, you and Danny Catlow.
And we were all like, at different times we got the audition.
It was like, I think like, I forget, I think maybe I was first and then I was
like, oh shit,
I got this audition for the bear.
And then it was like, Eric got it.
And then, and then at all throughout the trip, we were all just like auditioning,
learning
the lines, like going over our lines for it.
And like retaping them.
It was like, it, it was kind of quite hilarious.
I feel like I can remember the lines almost.
It's like my man, my man.
I remember I went so hard on that first line.
I was like, my man, my man, Carmen, what's up, man?
Well, I feel like a lot of people, you know, they hear the, what's funny is
they hear the
word comedy, you know, I just read for this comedy show and they think like, oh
shit, it's
going to be like the Angry Beavers live action.
But if you're really sophisticated, you know, that comedy is another word for
human.
Okay.
Right.
Oh, speak on it.
Yo.
Well, yeah.
Well, I think the, I think like, yeah, that's interesting.
That's interesting.
That was, uh, it's like, well, you know, it's, it is like a thing where I
forgot who I was
listening to.
I was listening to some funny actor or somebody that basically just like treat
a comedy
like a drama when you're, when you're auditioning or you're acting or something.
They just want to, I don't know.
Like, I think it's something about like who, you know, like John C. Reilly is
fucking like
goat, right?
Like he's a really like funny, but he's like a really good actor.
I feel like I wonder if he is ever like thinks he's funny or if he's just like,
I'm just going
to act.
Do you know what I mean?
Like, I wonder what his deal is.
He seems so serious in interviews.
He's very serious about the craft and I don't think he's ever played for a
laugh as well.
Not necessarily not in stepbrothers when he's eating all those chicken nuggets
at the table.
He said he did not to talk about another podcast, but I listened to his WTF
podcast years ago.
And the coolest thing he said was, uh, he was driving around with, uh, Sean
Penn and Sean Penn was, he was like, he was like being like, I don't know
whether I should do this role or not.
I, I, I, I, I, I've got to talk to my agent about it.
And Sean Penn was like, don't ask your agent for advice.
Ask your friends for advice.
Wow.
Bro.
And that's weirdly how we sort of do things naturally.
All four of us.
Well, our agents ask us for advice all the time.
Yeah.
Right.
Like, yo, how do I represent Eric the right way?
I'm nervous to send him these sides.
I feel like he's going to drop me.
It's so funny.
We, do you guys like audition for a bunch of shit?
Constantly, man.
It's so exhausting.
Basically, most of my life is auditioning.
Damn.
It's tight.
But yeah, life is not, life is not, life is not, life is an audition.
And that's right.
Heaven.
That's what's up.
You're always selling yourself.
I just said, well, and then we are, we are, we just transitioned into the topic
of the podcast.
Thank you.
We're going to be talking about sales.
Okay.
People have been begging.
We have a lot of, most of our audiences inside sales reps that are making just
the base salary.
And they're kind of monthly quota.
They're making like 32 K a year and they're, they have options to make more
with their, you know, sales, but they're just so bad at their jobs because they're
listening to joy tactics all, all fucking day.
And they're just cracking up their desk.
So I think that we can talk about just sort of the, because Carmen, you have a
lot of experience in sales, right?
I worked in sales for eight years.
And you're doing cold or B2B.
Was it B2B sales?
It's business.
Yeah.
It was business to business, but I mean, essentially like they would tell us
the company I worked at would tell us it wasn't a cold call.
It was a warm call.
It was a warm call because we were a fortune 500 company.
We were the largest, I worked at a logistics company.
We were the largest logistics company in the country.
So they were like, it's a warm call, but that's bullshit.
Like, I guess it's warm if they already know who you are.
But essentially, like if you're just calling somebody who doesn't know you,
that's a fucking cold call.
You're starting from, you know, bare one.
If you're getting introduced through somebody, like, sure.
But like my job was straight up like I would go on Hoover's and or which is
like basically like a Google for like companies and you can look at companies
financials and what they do.
Or I would go in grocery stores or I would see products and I would call these
companies and I would say, hey, I see that you ship.
I see that you have this product.
We are a shipping company.
We can move your freight from, you know, whether it be Florida or wherever to,
you know, Texas.
And I could do it for, you know, $800 or something.
And so say, say I get a truck.
I would get a truck for like $600.
Then my company would make a $200 profit and I would make 12% of that.
That's all.
It was a grind.
But like, yeah, I mean, like I did some hustle shit like I did when I was on
Hoover's after a while.
I was like, I want to just call the richest companies.
So I like filtered it by oil.
I filtered it by, you know, richest to poorest.
And so I was only calling billion dollar oil companies for a while.
And were you getting fucked up at this point in your life?
Were you getting faded every single night?
No, no, no, no.
I was getting faded every Friday and Saturday, no doubt.
Probably meeting up on Sunday.
I mean, I'm sure there was like Thursdays and where I went out and stuff.
But like, I wasn't partying the way I was partying in college.
I think in college I was drinking like five days a week.
And in after after college, I was definitely still getting so fucked up on the
weekends where it was like embarrassing.
I'm smelling natural gas in my house right now.
So I'm going to just go check to see if it's on.
Keep the conversation going.
But I feel like there's a gas leak.
So I'll be right ass back.
You guys keep it going.
Open your windows, bro.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I will.
One sec.
This is usually how it goes.
Usually within about the first 10 minutes or so, Eric likes to get up.
It's a good excuse, that one.
But it's kind of just a reason to get up.
That just straight up killed the momentum.
Now we have to talk about how he laughs.
I know.
Well, you know what we should do real quick is I know you mentioned this,
Carmen, but you have a stand-up special that just came out on Veeps.
It's an app that is owned by – I learned this from your special premiere that
it's owned by the Good Charlotte guys.
So they started the app and then they sold – so they still own it, but they
sold a part of it to Live Nation.
So it's like – so they got – so let's just say that I think they have money,
but I don't know.
I'm not really – I'm not really seeing it.
But you said you found out about it through like watching the credits.
Like you didn't even know that.
I didn't know that.
You saw the credits and saw like the – what do they call like Billy something?
Oh my – they're the Maddens, like Joel Madden.
The Madden.
Yeah.
But – so I mean the honest answer is about a week ago or so I was talking to
the guy at Veeps who bought the special and he was like telling me how they
were owned by Good Charlotte or the guy – or somebody told me.
And I was like, wait, what?
That's crazy.
But the funny thing was I never met these guys and somebody was watching the
credits and they were like, yo, Benji Madden and like Joel Madden are executive
producers?
How do you know those guys?
I was like, what?
I didn't know that their names were in the credits.
So essentially I roll with Good Charlotte now.
Those are my – that's my squad.
That's a powerful combo that the world has been kind of waiting on and afraid
of is when – like when the fu
