and he had to be pretty talented to be able to do that.
He was consultant and researcher for all aspects of the anthology,
The Beatles' own TV series, DVDs and CDs, for which he worked alongside George
Martin himself.
His current project is shaping up to extend no less than 25 years of full-time
endeavour,
researching, writing, what's already being held as The Beatles' definitive
independent biography.
Tune In, the first of the three volumes in The Beatles all these years, is
released this week,
and Mark is over from England to launch it and moderate these roundtable events
for Bloomingdale's and Esquire.
So please welcome to the United States and to our show tonight, Mark Lewis.
Thank you. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
And welcome to the second of four very special roundtable events, celebrating
The Beatles,
two being held in New York and two in Los Angeles.
It is genuinely an honour to be here on behalf of Bloomingdale's and Esquire
magazine.
The production, and maybe just from the way I speak, you might have picked up
on the fact
that I'm actually not from around these parts.
I come from a little country across the Atlantic.
During the research for my new book, Tune In, I found a lovely description in
Billboard magazine
of the place that I've always called home.
Billboard called it The Tight Little Isle.
It fits, but I'm very proud to say that my tight little isle has turned out
some pretty big talent down the years.
Still proving them wrong today.
The Beatles have never gone away.
They're here to stay.
Their qualities and influence, their humour,
and their music, their artistry, and their innovation continue to delight and
inspire.
The countdown clock on those 50th anniversary celebrations begins here this
week with these four events,
when we're looking again at some very special elements of the Beatles' story,
to enjoy again what made them so special.
Tonight is the Beatles' Music and Legacy,
and I have with me on stage here three people with plenty of pedigree in their
particular field.
On the left there, we have Alan Kozy.
Alan has been a music critic and cultural reporter for the New York Times since
1977.
He's also written several books, including the classical music edition in the
New York Times and Central Library.
He's written a biography of the violinist Misha Ellman,
and two volumes about surely his real favourite subject, the Beatles.
The first is The Beatles from the Cabin to the Rooftop,
and the new one, coming out soon, is Got That Something?
How I Wanna Hold Your Hand Changed Everything.
That's being published next month by Times Books and Byliner as an e-book
single.
For years, he's been the New York Times' go-to guy whenever there's a Beatles
story to write,
which is often.
So please welcome Alan Kozy.
Gentleman in the middle there is Walter Everett.
He's a professor of music theory at the University of Michigan.
He's the author of The Foundations of Rock,
and was editor of the essay collection Expressions in Pop Rock Music.
He's published many analytical essays on rock artists from Paul Simon to Death
Cab for Cutie,
and on Mozart, Schubert, and 19th century song repertoire.
But The Beatles are really where it's at,
and his two-volume work, The Beatles as Musicians, remains for me the best of
its kind
in the way it takes apart The Beatles' musical work,
examines it from every angle,
and shows what made it so special.
So ladies and gentlemen, Walter Everett.
Closest to me here we have Ken Scott.
Ken became an assistant engineer at the tender age of 16,
at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London.
His first session was not to produce that,
but to work on the second side as tape operator,
the second side of The Beatles' album,
A Hard Day to Night,
at the age of 16.
After that, Ken worked on every Beatles album through Rubber Soul,
and then, after becoming promoted to an engineer proper,
worked on Magical Mystery Tour,
and The White Album.
Switching to Trident Studios in London,
Ken worked with John Lennon on Give Peace a Chance,
and Cold Turkey.
He worked with George Harrison on All Things Must Pass,
and with Ringo Starr on The Don't Come Easy,
as well as albums with Elton John, America, and Pink Floyd.
He became a producer for David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust album,
Supertrance, Crime of the Century,
and Jeff Begg's There and Back.
His recently published memoir is called
Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust,
and he's here tonight to get back to where he once belonged.
Thank you.
