Richie Furay Performance in NYC 2015

Good evening everyone. Alicia, did you do the cell phone wrong?
Okay, so welcome everyone to live at Barnes & Noble with Richie Furet. My name
is Chuck
Doller, I work for E1 Music. We're in the new label that Richie's new CDs are
on today and I just wanted to take a couple minutes to first welcome you and
you know when you've had a career spanning over 50 years there's a lot of
material to cover and so as a way of form of introduction let's start with Richie
actually got his start here
in the village when he and Steven Stills became members of the Cafe of Go-Go
Singers which then led to Richie, Steven, and Neil Young obviously forming the
iconic Buffalo Springfield.
From there Richie again went on with Jim Messina to form the, again, iconic and
trailblazing alt-country band Pokeout.
And as if that isn't enough for a career, Richie then stepped out with JD Saller
and Chris Hillman to form the Saller-Hillman Fury Band.
And he was just getting started.
He's been fronting his own band, the Richie Furet Band for years now.
And Richie has really been a staple of what we have now come to know and love
as Americana Music.
And I think Hand in Hand is just a wonderful collection of Americana Music.
It really takes him back to his roots.
I think it's a testament to who he is not only as a person but as an artist.
And I can honestly say that, you know, I am honored to have him not only as a
label mate but to also call him my friend.
And I'd like you all to please welcome the one and only Richie Furet.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Well, I'm humbled that you guys would all come out tonight for this.
This is really, really sweet.
This is nice.
And we'll play a couple of songs.
You're going to get to hear the songs tonight.
Let me get my chocolate.
Can you all hear me?
Yes.
I'm used to yelling at people.
You're going to get to hear the songs tonight as they were written.
You know, just kind of with an acoustic guitar.
And so they're kind of naked, if you will.
But this is, you know, when you write a song and then you bring it to the band
and you say, "Here, I got this song."
And then you rely on, at least in a group situation, you rely on the other
musicians, you know, to fill in the blanks.
And, you know, add to the whole arrangement of everything.
I think I just lost a pick, so I'm going to look for another one.
Yeah.
Tell him I got one.
I got it.
Here we go.
So, anyway, this is pretty cool.
You guys are all quiet, though.
You know, a few years ago, I did this little reunion with Steven Stills and
Neil Young.
And the hotel that we stayed in on Sunset Boulevard was across the street when
we were in Los Angeles.
It was across the street from Ben Franks where we met.
But I went down to the Whisky-A-Go-Go.
Because that's where, you know, the Springfield played.
We were the house band there for quite a while.
And I remember this place as being just huge.
Just a really big place.
And really, when we walked inside and looked around, I don't know if it was
much bigger than this room here.
But it was crazy.
Anyway.
So, yeah, Chuck, thank you so much, man.
So happy.
I don't know where'd Chuck go.
He's over here.
Okay.
Just so happy that E1 decided that they liked the music.
They came to hear us.
I could tell you a little story.
It came about a year ago when we were at BB Kings.
And I was going around before the show.
And I was working the room.
You know, I like to work the room.
It kind of relaxes me a little bit.
They wouldn't -- I couldn't work it tonight.
I don't know why.
But anyway, I'm working all the way around.
I get around to this very last table.
It was about 10 minutes before we're going on.
I say, "Hi, I'm Richie Fure," you know.
And Chuck's there with Alan.
And they say, "Yeah, we know who you are.
We're thinking of signing you."
And I'm thinking, "Whoa!"
Really?
Oh, wow!
And so, lo and behold, it all worked out.
You know?
How cool.
And I'm just so -- I'm so happy.
So, I'm so old school, you know, that this just really has meant a lot to me to
have
Entertainment One just get on board with this record.
And I'm so pleased with the response that I've been hearing coming up from it.
I'm just so happy with the songs.
I thought when I wrote the songs that there was something special.
I mean, that's not -- I'm not being, you know, crazy about it.
I just thought there was something special about them.
And obviously, it looks like, you know, people are enjoying it.
It's just released today, right?
Today is -- but we did have some odd versions of it going out there.
The single on the album is called, "We Were the Dreamers."
And that song is a song about Poco.
It's a song that I wrote just reflecting upon way back in 1969 when we were
just getting started.
We were just trying to present a different kind of music.
And we were playing at the Troubadour, which also is no bigger than this room.
Very tiny.
But it kind of tells the story of Poco.
We were trying to bridge a gap between country music and rock and roll music.
And as I say in the song you'll hear in a few minutes that some got it on the
other side.
And then some didn't get it on the other side.
I mean, I felt like, you know, when we started that we were too country for
rock and too rock for country.
I mean, as we started moving on.
But as it turned out, you know, today it's just music.
You know, nothing less, nothing more.
Everybody's kind of tapped into the -- tapped into what the music was all about.
So this is -- I'm going to sing that song first tonight.
So you can hear it.
You're going to hear it how it was -- how it was written.
So, anyway.
Here we go, huh?
Are we on?
We're okay, Jeff?
We were the dreamers.
Shooting high for the stars.
Making rock and roll music.
Playing country guitar.
We'll be blazed the trail for generations to come.
Yeah, we were the dreamers.
Just some kids having fun.
When there's nothing to prove.
There's nothing to lose.
When you're just playing your music.
Can pay your dues.
Can pay your dues.
But when people kept coming.
Saying, "Give us some more."
How could we not win?
That's what we were there for.
We were the dreamers.
We were the dreamers.
We were the one.
We were the one.
The ones we played.
We were the one.
We were the one.
The ones we played.
That came the sun.
We were the one.
We were the one.
We were the one.
We were the one.
We were the one.
We were the one.
We were the one.
We were the one.
We were the one, the one who claimed that came the sun. Now it's just a shadow
of days coming gone. We were the dreamers, pioneers pressing on.
It's been forty-some years, 1969, on that troubadour stage.
It just seemed like our time. Oh, can you go sunset? That's where we call home.
We make certain our music had a sound all its own.
And today out of Nashville, it echoes the sound.
But back in Redneck and Hippie, we'll never be found on the same stage together.
Though a few got it for sure. And today it's just music. Nothing left stuff
alone.
We were the dreamers. We were the one, the one who claimed that day in the sun.
Now it's just a shadow of days coming gone.
We were the one, the one who claimed that day in the sun. Now it's just a
shadow of days coming gone. We were the dreamers. Pioneers pressing on.
We were the one, the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
We were the one who claimed that day in the sun.
Somebody had to start it right.
And so we did.
It was pretty cool.
And we started a whole genre of music.
And some folks have going on.
They've kind of soared on out there somewhere.
But someone had to pioneer it, right?
That's what we did.
That's great.
Let me see here.
The album is called Hand in Hand.
And I wrote that song about Nancy.
I don't know if I'm going to play it here tonight or not.
I don't know.
Probably play that.
I was going to write something else.
I mean, I was going to sing something else.
Well, you know what?
I can always do that too.
Just as it comes.
But you know, we've been married for 48 years.
Thank you.
Thank you.
And as I like to say, I don't know how it just all came about on the last
little tour.
But I was just thinking, you know, a relationship that lasts that long, you're
not talking about puppy love anymore.
You know, you're talking about a relationship that's lasted.
We've gone through the ups and downs.
You know, we've had our struggles.
Nancy and I tried to divorce twice in our 48 years.
Once it was, you know, coming from me.
Once it was coming from her.
But, you know, by God's grace, we made it.
And we've sustained a marriage.
We have four daughters.
Three of them are married.
I have 11 grandchildren.
One of the way.
One of the two in May.
That'll be number 12.
That's my daughter Jessie's new little baby girl going to be born.
I think she's going to call her Mabel.
How about that?
You know?
First time I heard Mabel.
Well, she's got a Brooklyn and a Pepper.
Now I think she's going to have a Mabel too.
I'm not sure.
But where do these names come from?
What happened to Judy and Sarah and Mary?
And so on.
You know, I hadn't thought about playing hand in hand.
But, you know, maybe I will.
If I stumble through it, it's okay, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
See, I've surrounded myself with some of the greatest guitar players in the
world.
And, you know, you know.
If I stumble through it, it's okay, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
See, I've surrounded myself with some of the greatest guitar players in the
world.
And, you know, you know, if I stumble through it, it's okay, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
See, I've surrounded myself with some of the greatest guitar players in the
world.
And, you know, when I get up here, I just kind of hack a little bit.
So you guys can hack a little bit.
I couldn't love you anymore.
And I couldn't tell you anymore.
But every time I see you, the more I know I need you.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
And just like the rivers always run, and lovers watch the setting sun.
Step by step and day by day, just one looks enough to say, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
And so we run.
And so we run.
Hand in hand.
We run.
And so we run.
And so we run.
Hand in hand.
We run.
Hand in hand, we run. Baby, don't ever let go. Hold me tight to the last dance,
you know. The beat of your heart next to mine makes our love stronger and
longer.
Cause your hand is in mine, we won't worry about losing time. Cause you are the
girl of my dreams, and you're mine.
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
When I look in your eyes, I know it's love and realize.
Yesterday may have come and gone, but hand in hand we keep going on.
Oh, we're on. Oh, yeah.
And so we run. Hand in hand, we run.
Baby, don't ever let go. Hold me tight to the last dance, we know.
The beat of your heart next to mine makes our love stronger and longer.
Your hand is in mine, we won't worry about losing time.
You are the girl of my dreams, and you're mine.
You are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of my dreams.
You are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of my dreams.
And you are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of my dreams.
And you are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of my dreams.
And you are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of my dreams.
And you are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of my dreams.
And you are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of my dreams.
And you are the girl of my dreams, and you are the girl of
