When we come back...
How good are you?
Professional.
He's nine years old and the president of his own company.
Atoms beta test.
And later...
I know people who are glued to their PC.
Letterman's other network.
Why do you do it?
Thousands of fans linked by computer.
Off me.
This guy's very funny, yeah.
Also, who killed the typewriter?
Does Jessica Fletcher know?
Find out straight ahead.
Novels, but I'm not sure I'd want to be wearing or reading what the computer
makes.
When 48 Hours continues...
I know people.
They got the modems.
They got the DOS.
Do you want the inside story on Dave?
I'm so excited.
Going to the big show.
The line forms here.
What brand of canned hams does Dave give out on the show?
And ahead...
Just how do you get online?
Aw, I gotcha, didn't I?
Actress Sandra Bullock knows all about it.
I'm crazy about the internet.
Almost a little too much, so...
From New York, please step lively.
It's the Late Show with David Letterman.
David Letterman.
I want to tell you something.
You know, I think it's a generational thing.
I don't own a computer.
I don't know anything about the information superhighway.
And I know people, friends of mine, members of my peer group, who are glued to
their PC.
Excuse me!
Funny stuff.
When it comes to the internet, there are two sharply defined ability groups.
They got like a laptop.
They got the modems.
They got the DOS.
They got the ROM.
They got the mouse.
They got the power book.
They got the power mouse.
Yeah.
Those who really get it, and those who are clueless.
They have the internet.
They have the CompuServe.
They have the online America.
They have all of that.
Wow.
And I know nothing about it.
You know nothing about it.
It's the difference between David Letterman and Dave's fans.
Someone wrote in and asked about why Dave always says, you know, hello, girls.
Hello, girls!
And people keep responding.
The secret to Dave's success, he keeps repeating things like, hello, girls.
After many repetitions, it becomes funny.
Hello, girls!
And it's been going on for a while.
Nightly, they chat about the Late Show on the internet's largest fan club.
There's a post on here, if Letterman was ever on Mork and Mindy.
Fans like Chris Himes.
If you can call them fans.
Disciples, maybe.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Chris Himes is but one of 60,000 fans who keeps the phone lines humming, exchanging
priceless
tidbits about Dave.
Here in Evanston, Illinois, another die-hard fan is trying to make it easier
for the uninitiated
to get online with alt-fan Letterman.
Since last night, there were over 200 articles posted to this news group.
Over 200 people wrote in to say something about the Letterman show?
That's right.
What brand of canned hams does Dave give out on the show?
And he gives out Krakow or Krakis.
Krakis.
They're Polish.
This is amazing.
Aaron Barnhart is what amounts to the fan club organizer in the disorganized
world of the internet.
And we're adding anywhere from 500 to 1,000 subscribers each day.
This mailing list is going places that no other internet mailing list has gone.
I think with my generation, we've kind of grown up using computers or
electronic forms for entertainment.
Fan Chris Himes is in college in Washington, D.C.
Now, we could sit here and talk to him.
Yes, we could.
We could talk to him over the internet.
Alright, you'll show me how to do this.
You want to try that?
Yeah, I need help.
Okay.
See, period.
With Barnhart's considerable assistance...
You backspaced over the dock.
What did I do?
Oh.
We connected.
Okay.
We're connected.
Hey there.
So, you can start typing at any time.
Why do you do it?
Why do you do it?
Well, for me...
For me, a person who has no attention span, it's a great diversion.
This guy's very funny.
Both Himes and Barnhart spend about an hour a day at the club, online.
It can really eat up your time.
It can really eat up your time.
It can really eat up your life.
Ain't that the truth.
Do you think most of the people in the fan club are college students?
Yeah.
Most are.
You know.
Some older.
Some older people, too.
Not older than 30.
What does he mean by that?
It doesn't sound very old to me.
Alright, I'm asking him.
What has been the most interesting outgrowth of your membership in the fan club?
Tickets.
Number one.
I'm so excited.
I could explode.
Someone offered a pair of tickets to the Letterman Show on the internet.
Going to the big show.
And Himes got them.
Come back at 4:00.
I'm going to put you online.
File your numbers.
How much is the blue one?
How did you like Mujibar?
I got a t-shirt from a store.
Hi, Mom.
I'm going to give him all these gifts.
This whole peace offering.
And then slip them in my resume.
Himes is trying to charm his way into an internship on the Late Show.
Here we go.
Thanks for watching.
Have a great evening.
Good night, everybody.
Great time.
It was great.
Excellent show.
Two thumbs up.
Did the resume bring any tangible response?
I'm still waiting for a response, but I feel good.
And I've got a few tricks left.
If you're asking me what tricks, I might.
Just mail myself in a six-foot crate to the intern coordinator.
For Barnhart, the explosive growth of this fan club signals that the
information superhighway may be in for some traffic jams.
Well, where is this headed?
I think you're going to see the number of people using the internet double or
triple just in the next couple of years.
And I think that the internet is going to come to some sort of impact.
You know, the internet is now used by the White House, the National Institute
of Health.
That's right.
And the Letterman Center.
Where in the internet chain would you put this?
Dessert.
They have the internet.
They have the CompuServe.
They have the Online America.
They have all of that.
Wow.
And I know nothing about it.
You know nothing about it.
Here's what I know.
Look at that.
Right there, ladies and gentlemen.
Try to tell you something.
Well, if you're as baffled as Dave, take heart.
I'm having terrible time with my laptop.
Help is on the way.
Here's lots of words.
This man will make house calls.
Who are you?
And so will Charlton Heston.
All you need is a computer.
The flesh is weak.
They're good stories.
They really are.
Full of sex and violence and blood.
We'll be right back.
Thank you.
