Late night, this very program will be preempted tomorrow night for Wimbledon
coverage, and that's all well and good with me, but we know that this news has
disturbed many viewers, so to help cushion the blow, we'd like to present this
public service docudrama, Anatomy of a Preemption.
Tonight, the part of the 12-year-old boy will be played by a 26-year-old man.
The remainder of the cast is unchanged.
I'm David Letterman. Tonight, late night is preempted to bring you Wimbledon
coverage.
Love 15. Love 30.
It's no late night. I hate NBC.
Come in.
Excuse me. My car broke down outside, and I was wondering if I could use your
telephone.
Wow, Dave Letterman. I watch your show all the time.
But I can't tonight.
I hate NBC. I hate it. I hate it.
Wait a minute. Hold it. Hold it. Get a hold of yourself.
I can understand your anger, but you know, there's more to life than watching
TV.
You could be reading books.
Books are for sissies.
Sissies?
Well, let me tell you about one, quote, unquote, sissy, named Kennedy.
He looked around at society, and he saw a lot of things he didn't like, but
Kennedy took out his anger by writing a book.
President Kennedy?
No.
Actor, George Kennedy.
Wow.
Yes, that's right. The book is called Murder on Location.
And like it says right here, actor George Kennedy stars in a new role as sleuth
when murder on the set turns the cast into corpses.
Jeez.
Yeah?
Hey, Dave. I can't fix that thing. I need different tools.
Oh, no. Bill, forget about the tire. Bill, come on here for a minute. How about
giving us a little reading from the new George Kennedy book, Murder on Location?
Oh, I'd be happy so.
Bill Wendell!
Yeah, hi, little kid.
Have a seat, son.
Murder on Location by George Kennedy, Chapter One.
The day of this first murder began like any other day on location, early,
before the sun was up.
A long procession of vehicles made its way toward the set.
Yellow headlights probing impudently into the darkness.
You know, reading's as much fun as watching TV.
Yes.
You know, I think we've all learned a little something here tonight.
What have we learned, Dave?
You've got the s*** all over your face. Did you know that?
No.
Well, what we've learned here, Bill, is that reading can be fun, always bring
along the proper tools for the job, and virtually anyone can play a 12-year-old
boy on this show.
Then we get back to the story.
Everyone, from axters to grips.
We'll be right back to meet Jim Moran, the PR man's PR man.
Thank you, Robert.
Thank you.
