I, uh, I don't know if it's St. Patrick's Day or what, but I was standing
backstage a couple of minutes ago, and I had kind of a dream, kind of a vision,
and for a second I thought I heard some drunk in the audience singing my way.
Did that happen? Just a drink.
Was that? Must have been a drink.
Where? Well, he was...
At a bar!
That's right. Here on The Late Show, Monday night is Talent Roundup night, so...
I hope you folks had a lovely St. Patrick's Day, and I'm, uh, I'm thinking
about this.
How can I describe St. Patrick's Day in New York City to people who have not
experienced it?
I was thinking about this, and St. Patrick's Day in New York City is like when
the streets of New York look like the backseat of a cab.
That's the closest I could come. That's exactly how it looks.
I want to...
I had a, uh...
I'm coming to work today, and my cab driver picks me up this morning, and, uh,
my cab driver...
My cab driver, I think, is still celebrating St. Patrick's Day. He had his
green card pinned to his turban.
I think that's...
I think that's it. I think that's it.
But, listen to this. If you're coming to New York City, good news about New
York City cabs, they have passed a law now which will require mandatory
retirement of all New York City cabs after they have been on the street for
three years.
Three years. Retirement of the cabs, mandatory. And they say if this works,
they're gonna try the same thing with hookers. So...
I did it my way, and now the end is near. And so I've made the vinyl curtain.
Yesterday, I was leaving the big St. Patrick's Day parade, and I saw a touching,
uh, only in New York kind of a scene. It was very, very cute.
It was over on Fifth Avenue, the parade route, and there was a father with his
eight-year-old son teaching the youngster how to throw up in the gutter.
Oh, I'm telling you. It was, it just, it broke my heart.
Good news, sports fans. Former, uh, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, uh, Neil O'Donnell
has signed now with the New York Jets.
Yeah!
But now, wait a minute. Listen to this.
Neil O'Donnell has promised he is going to take the Jets to the Super Bowl.
That's unbelievable. Man, what a generous thing, because I'm telling you, an
airfare alone, that's like $60,000.
And then you got the rental car, and you got the hotel, and you got the phone
bill, and then they're gonna want souvenirs, and then they're gonna want snacks,
and then you got incidentals and tips.
Man, is that a generous thing to do.
And now the end is near.
What the hell was that?
Good news, uh, ladies and gentlemen, coming out of, uh, New York Yankees, uh,
spring training camp.
Yeah, right around the corner.
They're saying now that Dwight Gooden's control is excellent.
That's what they look for in spring training.
They say he's excellent control.
In fact, he has not once missed a specimen cup.
So that's, yeah, good is control.
Ah, let's see, the, uh, race for the White House, going along pretty smoothly.
Bob Dole, now more confident than ever.
Yeah, very, very optimistic that he's gonna get the nomination.
And so, in fact, he is so confident that, according to his campaign manager,
Bob Dole, sometime in the middle of next week, is actually scheduled to smile.
So, yes, man.
Woo!
No!
I'm afraid someone has swiped my necklace.
Eh...
Well, they say, uh, President Clinton now, his strategy against the Republican
candidates is just to lay low until all the fighting is over.
That's Clinton's strategy.
Just gonna lay low until the fighting is finished.
And, you know, just kinda like what he did in the '60s.
That's what he's trying to do.
I face the final curtain, I face the da-da-da-da-da.
Come on, sir, stand up and belt it out.
Where are you, buddy?
Let's go!
Come on!
Come on, pick it up!
Come on, let's hear it!
Yeah, sing, go!
All right, he wants me to come on.
Where are you?
What are you doing?
What?
He's leaving!
He's...
Leaving.
Well, so much, so much for Monday night being Talent Roundup.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a lovely program for you tonight.
Ricky Lake is on the show, the delightful, the talented, the young, the personable
Ricky Lake.
William Shatner from all them outer space movies with those big ears.
William Shatner with them big ears or something.
And a very funny young comedian, Ray Romano.
That's the show this evening.
Wait a minute.
Is the guy here?
He's still here.
Oh, he's come back.
Where is he in the back?
Anthony?
Is that who it is?
Come on out.
Here he comes, ladies and gentlemen.
Come here.
Hi, Anthony.
How are you?
I may have this.
Now, where are you from, Anthony?
I'm from Staten Island.
Staten Island.
And you're going to sing like Frank Sinatra.
Sure.
You're going to sing my way.
Sure.
Paul, come on over here.
You guys work something out.
We don't want, you know, the real, real extended play version.
We want just, like, is it the last eight bars?
Yes, there were times.
Yes, there were times.
I'm sure you knew.
Sure.
Okay.
And just knock us out.
Okay?
Just drop a step.
I don't want, Anthony, I don't want a dry eye on the house, all right?
Okay.
Here we go.
Anthony from Staten Island, ladies and gentlemen.
My way.
Yes, there were times.
Yeah.
I'm sure you knew.
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all when there was doubt.
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it almost.
And eyes stood tall.
And did it my way.
Yeah.
Anthony.
What a job.
Very impressive.
Thank you very much.
Anthony from Staten Island, ladies and gentlemen.
Very, very nice.
Oh, man.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
I want to tell you.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what Star Search is all about.
That young man's going to have a very long, successful career.
Here's Paul Schaefer, kids.
- Stay for our kids!
