that's it we're back we're back yikes forgive me uh tomorrow on the program ann
archer curator of
the brick museum basil saffer and martin mall ann archer is the curator right
basil saffer is
the curator and martin mall who is not affiliated in any way with the cbs
school of broadcasting
uh roy orverson will be here in a minute and also uh bob saget you know before
christmas i think
actually the week of christmas one of our staff members gerard mulligan who's
been a writer with
us for years and years we wanted to do something warm and something fun for the
holiday so jerry
said that he would bring in his collection his scrapbook of uh family circus
cartoons and we
would look through those together uh it was a lot of fun and a couple of things
happened and then when
we got back after the holidays something even nicer happened as a result of
that initial appearance so
we thought we'd bring jerry out now and talk about that jerry come on out and
tell the folks
what happened this is gerard mulligan nice to see you how are you so what i
said is pretty much what
happened you you came on with your scrapbook of uh bill keens family circus
cartoons collecting and uh
we looked at them you pointed out some of your favorites i think we have some
photos of that yeah
there you are and you're reading them to us reading the captions just enjoying
them together yeah and uh
and then as you recall we were interrupted by brandy and cricket who ran out
yeah the atlantic city show
girls came out exactly that a girder was suspended right above us here at home
base yeah just about
to give way and actually it did it did give way as a matter of fact and it hit
me pretty hard yeah and
you were not cold i was caught i was clinically dead for 90 seconds you were
actually gone i was
clinically dead yes and i brought you resuscitated me and thank you again so
that's one of the nice
things that that's one of the okay not even the most important nice all right
so then what happened after
that appearance well this week when i came back from vacation i found that i'd
received a personal
letter from the creator of the family circus bill keene bill keene right this
is it right here there
he is right there yeah he's got billy pointing out my name jerry mulligan sent
first class of course
that's right and there's a lovely personal letter may i read the letter you may
this is from bill
from bill keene dear jerry i've gotten some laughs with my cartoons but their
appearance with you
on tv last week was the first time they brought down the house so he's got a
pretty good sense of humor
there oh yeah tell me something i don't know dave yeah geez um so uh it goes on
here very nice
personal load if you'd like to have one of my originals name it and if it's
available it's yours
exactly so the last couple of days i've been going through the scrapbooks
picking out trying to just
narrow it down to the ones that i like the most like the best yeah and i've got
it down to three
okay narrowed it down how many how many separate entries do you have in your
scrapbook oh geez i don't
know i've got 17 scrapbooks i don't know how many entries i don't really you
know do it on that basis
this is one you're a real buff then i'm a buff yeah shame you say that uh here's
one this goes
back this is december 17th 1967 and uh jeffy's saying to one of his friends we
can't play now
we have to help our daddy put up the christmas lights yeah you know how kids
help yeah that's
what jeffy's doing here i was real down when i read this yeah i was drinking a
lot i was alone
what year was that 1967 67 it was christmas time christmas time i read this i
started laughing and
laughed your heels turned your life around bill keene saved my life bill keene
saved your life
now this is the second one that you might select for an original you know that's
made the cut so far
this is the second one that's in the running this is you can see here march 15
1984. this is my
marriage the day i was going to you were you were married march 15. now let me
show you the cartoon
dolly's coming out of the bedroom with a sheet around her head saying look
mommy here comes the bride
right now i was having second thoughts right sure like every wedding day i was
i had cold feet i decided
after seeing this i want to be the ringmaster of my own family circus that's
very thoughtful i married
my wife we have a lovely family again bill keene saved my life bill keene saved
your life exactly all
right so one more and then you'll have to make a choice which one you want the
original of this one
this is from today's paper as a matter of fact you see jeffy's falling asleep
at the table he's saying
i'm still sleeping inside i'm still sleeping breakfast i think we know the
feeling oh yeah
i always say i think the audience the audience knows the audience knows anyway
i always say my
favorite cartoon is the one i just saw so it's narrowed down pretty much so
those are the three
that you're going to choose those are the three oh that's right what else did
bill send you anything
else there yeah this is great he sent me a the family circus album let's see
that a 25th anniversary
celebration oh so what this is this is a uh actually a quarter of a century
the hell was that good lord what is that are you all right jerry it's a geez it's
an arrow oh my god
wait a minute there's the atlantic city showgirls brandy and cricket girls what
are you doing over
there i'm sorry mr letterman we were just fooling around with this crossbow we
got for christmas oh
no well you could have killed this guy now please be more careful gerard are
you all right i'm fine
thanks to mr bill keene yeah thank you
he saved my life again saved your life again all right girls come on in
so
