You know, since it is the holiday season, we were sitting around and we thought,
what would be something that we could do that would fit right in with the
feeling of the season?
Something that wouldn't be too elaborate, something that would be cute and warm,
and something for the whole family.
And one of our writers, Gerard Mulligan, you know Gerard, don't you, Paul?
Yeah, Gerard mentioned that he, since I guess for quite a while,
has been collecting those family circus comic cartoons in the paper,
and he's put together a scrapbook of them and he said he would be happy to
bring his collection on tonight
and just go through and take a look at them.
And it'll be cute and funny and warm and something for the family.
And it won't, we don't have to worry about a big elaborate kind of thing.
So, ladies and gentlemen, here from our own writing staff, Mr. Gerard Mulligan
and his scrapbook of...
Hi, Gerard, good to see you.
Good to be here.
I think, I think this was a great idea.
You have your scrapbook there of family circus cartoons.
The King's Family Circus.
Yeah.
How long have you been collecting them?
On and off since college.
Yeah.
And you don't write them, you don't draw them, you're not connected to them?
All I do is enjoy them.
You just enjoy them.
All right.
And so tonight you're going to share a few of them with us.
I thought I'd share some of my favorites.
And you have a family yourself.
I do, but I collected them long before I had a family.
Okay.
Two lovely children.
Two lovely children, Kevin and Catherine.
This will be perfect for the holiday season.
It is.
I think it's a family kind of a thing.
Okay.
This first one here, you see Jeffy saying at this dinner table,
I know why we say grace.
It's to let our food cool off.
Right.
So, you know, these little kids are realists.
You know, they don't care about it.
That's cute.
They don't care about this stuff.
That's cute.
They're cute.
Right through it.
Boom.
Boom.
They see things in a clear perspective.
They're not hypocrites.
That's what I say.
Here's a special, a Christmas one.
Little Billy is saying to mom who's on the phone,
tell Aunt Nancy, I've got all the clothes I need.
He doesn't want any clothes for Christmas.
No, he wants...
He doesn't want any socks or underwear.
What does he want?
He wants money or toys.
That's right.
Sure.
And again, the kid was able to cut right through to the heart.
The kid doesn't care.
This is great.
I bet you see a lot of this behavior in your own kids.
I do, sure.
Different eyes now.
Now, here's little Jeffy.
He's come in from the snow, and he says to his mom,
can I have some dry gloves, mommy?
These are full of snow juice.
Snow juice.
That's a good one.
Kids make up stuff.
Snow juice.
Water.
Water.
That's all it is.
It's water.
That's right.
Snow juice is water.
Okay.
I don't know if this is a Christmas one or just a winter one.
Jeffy's saying to dad, why are we cooking trees?
He sees the dad putting the logs in the fire.
That's all he knows.
It's inductive reasoning at its most essential level.
Jeffy's a smart man.
What the hell is that?
What is that roughly?
What is that?
What is that?
Well, ladies and gentlemen,
it's Atlantic City Showgirls Cricket and Brandy.
Hi, kids.
George Mulligan.
Hi, girl.
Only for letterless.
Yes?
Be careful.
We think that girder's loose.
Oh, my God.
You're right.
That girder may be loose.
What the hell?
I'm getting out of here.
Excuse me, girls.
Come on over here and get out of the way.
That girder is loose, Paul.
There could be...
He's not breathing.
Come on, Jerry.
Come on, Jerry.
Come on.
Come on.
Okay, okay.
You're okay?
Okay.
Oh, okay.
Oh, my God.
We've saved him.
I'm fine.
David Letterman,
your cool headed reaction saved my life.
Well, thank you very much.
Thank you, Jerry.
You're welcome.
And, hey,
as long as you girls are out here,
how about a little number?
Great.
Hey, that's great.
Oh, listen, that's fun.
Let's work out perfect.
Perfect.
That's great.
That's great.
Okay.
Now, Goldie Hawn is here tonight
and Minnie Black
and, of course, Bob Sarlath.
We'll be right back after a little bit.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
