all right my next guest has appeared in close to 40 movies he is without a
doubt one of those
actors whose faces you will recognize and whose name you probably don't know
this year he is starring in two films repo man in paris texas please welcome
the world's greatest character actor harry dean stanton
hi harry nice to see you now i mentioned in the beginning that people maybe don't
know your name
and i suppose that's kind of uh not really an insult but you you don't want
that to happen but
here's a review from paris texas and uh tell them what happened there we got a
photograph of
what's a little caption of you underneath there yeah but uh what does the
caption say well it says
harry dean stanton and the vim vinder's film paris texas but uh it's not me
yeah
you have any idea who that is it's a minor slip up the times has been great to
me through
vincent canby and everything yeah an ardent but that's not that's not you
definitely not you but
i've got the man's name here i think somewhere okay you i've got a lot of
material here in case
we run out yeah well i appreciate that when somebody comes prepared that shows
uh no that's not that's not it that's well while you're looking for that let me
let me go through
some of these films and you tell me briefly what you remember if anything about
each of these
michael uh higgins michael higgins is also an actor yeah maybe we'll both get a
job out of that
uh yeah but you don't need to work you're going like crazy i by the way i saw
repo man this morning
this is an incredible film yeah it's very funny it's a very stylized it's uh
got some comedy in it
that's had a real odd edge to it you're very funny what do you know about these
guys what is a repo man
well it's a legal car thief actually now when somebody uh their payments lapse
on a car
a repossession man goes in and gets it back right yeah i'm sure a lot of people
out here are familiar
with that right well i'm not to know a few people uh and uh did you did you
meet any of these guys
well yeah i met a couple of them and uh they it's it's pretty there's about
three stages of
it first is the sort of the establishment guys they work from nine to five say
please give us the car
as you you know your payments are behind the next group i work a little later
at night and they start
you know dress a little more informally a little more furtive and then the
third ones are the cowboys
with bulletproof vests they're for the hard cases yeah uh and and you were the
uh yeah i guess you
would be in the uh what which battery you were kind of like sort of in between
sort of yeah we were
a pretty rough bunch actually what's the repo man's creed do you remember that
from the film let's see
i let me see if i can stumble through it maybe i shall not uh cause harm to any
vehicle or the contents
thereof nor uh let there be cause to cause harm that's close enough yeah thank
you um now do you
remember that well of course you remember what was the first film you were in
uh it's called revolted
fort laramie i think we called it revolting fort laramie and uh what did you
play there that's joking
that's also helpful by the way if a guest will point out his own jokes i
appreciate that
i try to do the same for myself and that's very nice of you uh but before that
you made some uh
some films as a uh a non-professional in the service um oh yeah my first film
was an air force documentary
and uh i carried a stretcher and i didn't but before i got the job they said do
you have any pictures i
said no they said well uh do you have any uh in your wallet or so we can know
how to identify you
and uh am i supposed to look at you by the way or where's the camera i mean oh
harry anywhere you
want to look is fine anyway the camera is right there of course you can look at
me you feel more
comfortable looking at me we go through this night after night you're funny oh
thank you very much
okay so you got your pictures where you got your pictures no i said do you have
any uh uh photo do
you have anything in your wallet i said no i said but thinking quickly i said i'll
go out to the
tencent store and get four for a quarter in one of those machines in the photo
booth yeah so i went out
and got four four nice shots and i wasn't smiling at any of them i don't think
and he picked one of uh
one of the four shots that was my first publicity picture and it worked pretty
well didn't it that's
that's not too uh totally exciting story no it's a good story don't worry don't
you seem you seem
nervous are you nervous it's the first talk show i've ever done in my life uh
and oh you're doing
just fine yeah how's what do you what do you do to relax by the way you seem a
little tense um
drugs
no no that's that's not that's his only joke wasn't it tell the folks it was
just a joke
that was uh it was just a joke that was just a joke yeah uh i want to ask you
about this
this one film ronaldo and clara but what about it well what was that that was
bob dylan wasn't it
uh yeah i'm bob dylan and was that feeling like six hours long or something um
yeah yeah i think so i didn't sit through you made it but we will be right back
folks
we have 10 seconds left harry thanks for being here now now repo man uh is
opening in about 50
cities across the country it's been out for a while in and out back and forth
about 50 theaters you
should go see it it's a i think you'll enjoy it good night
