Our next guest is one of the youngest licensed ham radio operators in the
country.
I can barely use a telephone.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome six-year-old Veronica Harrington.
Veronica, how are you?
Wow! Hi! Nice to see you, Veronica. How are you doing?
Fine.
Yeah? You're six years old?
Mm-hmm.
You go to school?
Yeah, it's fine.
Yeah?
What grade? I guess you're in the first grade, aren't you?
I'm in the first grade.
Yeah, what kind of things do you do there in the first grade?
I do math, I do reading, and that's about all.
Yeah. Do you have brothers? Do you have sisters?
No brothers.
No brothers? A sister?
No.
Oh, okay. And you're from Long Beach, California?
Mm-hmm.
That's a beautiful city, isn't it?
Yeah.
And what do you think of New York City? Have you been to New York City before?
No.
Well, what's the difference between being in California and being in New York?
Well, the paper says New York Times here, and then in California it's Long
Beach Times.
Oh, so that's...
Were you thrown when you saw that?
Yeah.
Now, you know, we look at all of this equipment here, and it's very complicated-looking
stuff.
I guess you have, like, speakers and power generators and receivers and
transmitters,
and then we look at you, and you're a six-year-old girl, and you think to
yourself,
how do you know how to operate that stuff, how do you know how to operate that
stuff?
I just know.
Come to you in a dream, didn't it?
Now, did you get interested in this because your family is interested in it?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Is your dad a ham operator?
He's advanced.
My mom is a technician, and I am a technician.
Uh-huh.
And did you have to take a test, a federal communications test for this?
Yeah.
I had to do Morse code, and I had to do some questions.
Uh-huh.
Wow, this seems very advanced for a six-year-old girl.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Well, let me just say, you couldn't be cuter.
There you go.
Now, Veronica, do you...
Aww.
I wasn't talking to the audience.
Veronica, do you want to explain this to us?
And I guess now we're going to try and contact other ham operator people.
Can you get to it from over there if I move this right here?
Yes.
Okay.
Now, what kind of equipment do we have here, and will I be electrocuted?
You won't be electrocuted.
This is a 10-meter radio.
This is a...
No, this is a 10-meter radio.
This is a 2-meter.
I was going to say, it looks more like a 2-meter to me.
Let's see.
Let's see if we can't get the Titanic on here.
All right, now turn it on, and let's see what we can do.
Yeah.
Is that the power?
Yes.
Okay, turn that on.
Is that on?
Yes.
Oh, you just turned it on.
Okay, all right.
Now, who are we going to call?
I don't call anyone.
I just...
You just listen for people?
You wait for people to call you?
No!
Can you get me a cab?
All right, what are we going to do?
Show us how you work your radio at home.
All right.
Okay.
Can I call somebody?
Sure, please do call somebody.
This is KC6 TQR Monitoring.
Is anybody out there for a demonstration?
Yes, it's Dave in New Jersey.
Wait, I thought I heard something.
Yes, it's Dave in Trenton.
Go ahead, please.
Are we going to turn up the volume?
All right.
Okay.
Oh, that was good.
What was that?
It's my pulse.
This is TQR.
This is N2OVO.
Now, who's that?
Who's that?
Hey, who?
Can I get on there?
No.
Oh.
Hello, my name is Veronica.
And what is your name?
Veronica, the name here is Jeannie,
and the call sign is N2OVO.
Oh, I can see from your call sign
that you're somewhere in the West Coast.
Where are you from?
Wait a minute.
Are they on the shuttle?
I am from Long Beach,
but now I am in New York.
Try and mention my name.
Mention Dave.
Tell me you're on the Dave.
It's a Long Beach.
That's a beautiful area.
Veronica, is this your first time in New York?
Yes.
Would you like to talk to David Letterman?
David Letterman, sure.
This is KC6TQR.
Third-party traffic for my friend David Letterman.
And what do I say?
And who?
What's her name?
My name is Jeannie.
Hi, Jeannie.
It's me, Dave.
How you doing?
Hi, Dave.
I'm doing just fine.
Are you driving a truck?
I'm kind of a friend of yours.
I'm wondering how old she is.
Oh, she's six years old.
How long has she been a ham?
I've been a ham since last March.
I'm 44.
We'll be right back.
Yes, sir.
Yes, sir.
Well, that was a lot of fun.
Did you enjoy that?
Yes.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
You're a very, very nice young girl.
Thank you.
Yeah.
And say hello to all the folks back there in Long Beach for us, all right?
All right.
Okay.
And is this your equipment?
No.
Well, guess what?
We'd like you to have it free.
There you go.
My thanks to Bill Hicks and, of course, Charles Grodin.
We'll see you tomorrow night.
Good night, everybody.
We'll see you tomorrow night.
