Thank you very much, Paul. Welcome back to the show, folks.
Tomorrow night on this program, you'll meet Roy Blount Jr., also king of the
bull, Lash LaRue,
in answer to all of the phone calls and mails.
Mail, you know, a lot of people want to see this man, so he'll be here tomorrow
night.
Also, we'll answer our viewer mail.
About a year ago, I believe, this woman was on the program, and it's a pleasure
to have her back.
She is one of the foremost composers and performers in American music.
This is her latest album, entitled Speeding Time.
Now, singing the title song, please welcome, and we're mighty happy she's back,
Carole King.
Yeah.
Decades pass in just one year, and your illusions disappear, and you fear the
speeding time.
You find a dream that you embrace, look the other way, and it's a wreck.
Trying to keep pace, look the other way, and it's not easy to laugh at your
defeat.
But hang in, hold on, there will be relief.
You gotta try, gotta try to keep your life alive in this speeding time.
You never listen to when the prophet said, prepare yourself for times that lie
ahead.
Now that you know they didn't speak a lie, there's nothing for you to do except
to try.
And hang in, hang in, hold on, there will be relief.
You gotta try, gotta try to keep your love alive in this speeding time.
You gotta try, gotta try, gotta try, gotta try to keep your love alive in this
speeding time.
You gotta try, gotta try to keep your love alive in this speeding time.
You gotta try, gotta try, gotta try to keep your love alive in this speeding
time.
You gotta try, gotta try, gotta try, gotta try to keep your love alive in this
speeding time.
You gotta try, gotta try, gotta try to keep your love alive in this speeding
time.
You gotta try, gotta try, gotta try, gotta try.
Very nice.
Nice to see you.
Come on over here.
Very nice.
Thank you guys.
You sounded great.
You sound great with those guys and they sound great with you.
And you look terrific.
Thank you.
I was watching you on the monitor.
You look great.
Uh, speeding time.
What does that mean?
Is there something we ought to know about that?
What does that mean to you there, speeding time?
Well, Jerry Goffin actually wrote the lyric.
Uh, I think it means, uh, what we're looking at in 1984, everything's going
fast.
Seems to be going faster this year than it has in past years?
I think so.
Yeah.
This is, uh, now, uh, Jerry Goffin you were married to for quite a while, weren't
you?
Yeah, about ten years.
And then, uh, when you split up, you didn't work together for a while, huh?
Very short while.
We, we only didn't work together for a few months.
We've been writing together and, uh, we've written quite a few songs over the
years, actually.
Yeah.
So how was it working again on another album with him?
It was alright.
Yeah.
No problem there?
No problem.
Well, good.
I'm glad to hear it.
Thanks, Dave.
You're in Idaho.
Oh, they're going along pretty good.
You're still up there?
Yeah, I'm still up there.
Now, the last time you were here, we talked about you didn't have electricity
and plumbing.
Is that...?
I didn't have any of the, uh, the place I live at now.
I have electricity and plumbing and, uh, a whole different set of, uh, things I
don't
have.
Not, uh...
How long did you go without electricity and plumbing?
Um, I guess about three years.
And, and, uh...
Hey, no problem.
You know, if you don't have plumbing, there's nothing to break, right?
Well, that's true.
But I'm guessing that that's a, uh, that's a major readjustment, isn't it?
Yeah.
A major adjustment?
Well, it is.
You learn to go outside when you have to go to the bathroom.
That's, as I say, uh, that's compensated for by the fact you don't have
freezing pipes,
and up there it gets pretty cold.
Yeah.
But was that fun?
Did you enjoy, uh, going outside all the time?
I loved it.
Yeah, I did.
And, uh, in addition to that, which to me is, uh, uh, an unbelievable
circumstance,
you also, uh, there was only like eight people in this town, right?
Right.
You had to teach your son everything he knows today.
My son and my daughter, and I, I guess it was, uh, we taught, I taught them for
about three
years, and I guess we did a pretty good job, all of us, because they're back in
the public
school system, and they're, uh, ahead of grade.
Right.
But when you, when you go to, to teach a kid, I mean, where do you even, where
do you start?
What's the first thing you, you know?
Well.
How do you know what to do here?
There is, there's a, a course that you can get people, uh, diplomats, kids in
foreign
countries use it.
Uh, it's an accredited course, and they pretty much lay out what you should be
teaching for
that day.
And the most important thing that I taught them, I think, um, is the joy of
learning.
I mean, we're getting serious here, right?
But seriously.
But seriously, folks, if you, if you teach, if you can teach, um, a young
person how to
love learning, then the rest is easy.
Yeah.
The second most important thing, the most important thing was to go outside
when you have to go
to the bathroom.
Uh.
To remember that.
Now, you, you're in politics now.
Is this the deal?
Do you ever see yourself as an office holder here?
No, I don't.
Although, uh, I'm, I've been campaigning for Senator Gary Hart, and I guess, uh,
I've
been effective at making people aware of him, uh, because he's not taking PAC
contributions
and special interest group contributions.
He's the first presidential candidate that isn't doing that.
I was gonna do that.
Oh, no.
You missed.
He's, it's too late, Dave.
Uh, now, when, when you come back, you're gonna sing with, uh, Sherry.
Yeah.
Your daughter, Sherry.
All right.
We'll look forward to that.
Uh, this will happen later in the show.
We still have plenty of stuff to do here.
I'll quit touching you on the hand now.
Oh, I love it.
More and more.
Well, what do you know?
We have a winner.
No more calls.
Uh, we'll be right back, folks.
It sounded great.
Thank you very much.
Ladies and gentlemen, once again, and this time singing one of her classics, "Keep
Your
Hands Off My Baby," with our band and her daughter, Sherry Goffin.
Here's Carole King.
Ladies!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
We've been friends for, oh, so long.
I let them share what's nice.
But when you mess with the boy I love, it's time to draw the line.
Oh, keep your hands off my baby, I ain't gonna tell you, but one more time.
Oh, keep your hands off my baby, girl, you get it through your head, that boy
is mine.
