First there was rockabilly, then there was rock and roll, and the world has
never been the same.
But first, there was rockabilly, a sound captured by one man and his little
recording company.
He was the first to record an unknown country boy named Elvis Presley.
And as Kenley Jones tells us tonight, the rockabilly sound this week is getting
some special attention.
I've been rockin', I've been rollin', I've been boogie-woogie all night long.
This is Union Avenue in Memphis.
It was along this avenue almost 30 years ago, in this very studio, that
something called the Memphis Sound was born.
A new kind of music called rockabilly.
Rockabilly, rock and roll music, is nothing in the world but a white man's
lyric with a black man's rhythm.
Carl Perkins, along with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Jerry Lee Lewis, all got
their start in this studio, the home of the Old Sun Record Company.
They have come back to Memphis to cut a new album together.
It will be a tribute to the Memphis Sound, and in a sense to the founder of Sun
Records, Sam Phillips, the man who gave them their start.
With Sam Phillips' genius on the engineering, we came up with a very unique
sound, and the sound has kind of followed us for 30 years.
Hey, baby, jump over here when you do the ooby-dooby.
It was definitely a workshop.
I was learning the business.
It taught me what to do, how to record, and it was great fun, too.
It was my job to see that they were given the opportunity to be themselves.
I auditioned for everybody over there, and they all turned me down.
They said, do you know how to play a guitar, boy?
I said, yes, I can play guitar, but I play piano.
So he came to Memphis to record for Sam Phillips, and the rest, as they say, is
history.
Hold on a shake, you're going on.
Shake!
Shake!
Shake!
Honey, shake!
Phillips' most famous discovery at Sun Records was Elvis Presley.
His recording of Blue Suede Shoes is considered by many to be the anthem of
Rockabilly.
But the man who wrote that song, and who had the first hit recording of it, is
Carl Perkins.
Perkins has a theory about why Rockabilly, which some predicted would be a
passing fad, has remained popular.
That music steers your soul to the point you pat your feet, pop your fingers,
or clap your hands.
You are not worrying about a grosser bill or a car note during that two or
three minutes of that record.
And that's why it's lasting.
It makes you feel good.
You will if that rock music keeps playing.
Poochie!
Mark Poochie!
Yeah, here's Poochie!
Ken Lee Jones, NBC News, Memphis.
Okay.
That's Natalie News for Tuesday.
I'm Tom Brokaw.
I'll see you tomorrow night.
