And if this wasn't enough, and by gosh, don't you think it ought to be, we're
going to present
installment number two of a segment we like to call, Who Asked For It? So We Do.
Say hello to
the hardest working man in show business, Paul Schaefer. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah,
thank you. I am having
the time of my life tonight. Yeah! Paul Schaefer, did your folks get back up to
Thunder Bay okay,
Paul? Yeah, they're safe and sound, and you can get in touch with their agent
if you need them again.
Paul's parents were on the show a couple of weeks ago, a couple of days ago,
last week,
whenever it was. Nice, nice people from Thunder Bay, way up north. Tonight, for
the second time,
this is exciting, ladies and gentlemen, we are going to do a segment we like to
call,
Who Asked For It? We are going to hear from some members of our audience about
things people would
like to see on big-time network television, but never do until now. And right
here in this studio,
we are going to try and fulfill these requests. Let's take suggestion number
one. Who is our first
audience member who is helping us out tonight in Who Asked For It? Yes, ma'am,
what is your name?
Franny Steiner. Yes, Franny, what would you like to see on Who Asked For It? In
this time of strife,
I'd like to see you present something that will make us feel better as
ourselves, as Americans.
I'm sorry, Franny. We're not miracle workers here. We're...
Okay, let's try audience member number two. Who is audience member number two
who's participating this
evening? Yes, sir? Mike Curtis. Yes, sir, Mike. What would you like to see?
I'd like to see the CBS Late Movie. Can you tell me what it is?
CBS Late Movie.
I, uh... You know, I don't know what the CBS Late Movie is. Let's give them a
call. I kind of like to see it myself, now that you bring it up.
Do I have to redial that? Oh, here we go. We're calling...
Good afternoon, CBS.
This is CBS. Uh, yes. Uh, who is this, please?
Uh, this is CBS. May I help you?
Yes, uh, do you have a name, ma'am?
This is Operator 62.
Uh, this is talk show host 12, ma'am. Um, I was wondering if you could tell me
what's on your late movie tonight.
Yes, just a moment.
Okay. Operator 62, ladies and gentlemen.
Okay. At 11:30 tonight, uh, part one would be Alice. Uh-huh.
And part two, uh, McLeod at approximately 12:05.
I see. Would you be watching those tonight, do you think?
Well, I may be watching McLeod for a little while.
Okay. Okay. Thank you very much, Operator. Nice talking with you.
You're welcome.
Okay. There you have it. It's, uh, McLeod and Alice tonight on the CBS Late
Movie.
Uh, audience participant number three. Uh, yes, sir. What is your name?
Yeah, my name's Alex Slinsky, and I want to see, um, Willie Randolph of the New
York Yankees demonstrate how to bunt.
You would like to see Willie Randolph, second baseman for the New York Yankees.
Yeah. How to bunt.
How to bunt. Well, some say it's a dying skill in baseball these days. Uh, I'm
sorry. Willie Randolph is not available. Um, how about Peggy Cass?
Uh, I guess that'd be all right.
Okay. Here she is instructing how to bunt, ladies and gentlemen, Peggy Cass.
"A bunt is an invaluable tool for moving a fellow teammate into scoring
position or second base. As the pitcher begins his delivery, square off,
perpendicular to the plate. Slide your top hand halfway up the back shaft, like
this. When you make contact, bend your arms to deaden the impact. Try to push
the ball into the dirt just inside of the ball."
And you move inside the baseline, forcing the fielder to make the only possible
play to first base. Allowing your teammate to safely reach second. Now I will
demonstrate this art.
Thank you very much. Very nice. Well done. Peggy Cass showing us how to lay
down a bunt. I think we have time for one more audience participant. If he or
she
will stand, please. Yes, ma'am. Hi. Um, I have two requests. Two requests. Uh,
what are they? Uh, first, I'd like to know a little bit more about the
president of Melman Productions.
And, uh, second, I'd like to hear a number from a chorus line. Uh, President of
Melman Productions, of course, the gentleman who you frequently see on the show
saying, "This has been a Melman production and a number from..." We're running
desperately short on time, ma'am.
So, would it be alright if we just combined these two? Uh, what we're going to
do now is present the president of Melman Productions, Larry "Budd" Melman,
doing a number from a chorus line.
A chorus line.
It's today goodbye. The sweetness and the sorrow. Wish me luck the same to you.
But I can't regret what I did for you.
I can't regret what I did for love. What I did for love. Look, my eyes are dry.
The gift was ours to borrow. It's as if we all had a gift.
A gift was ours to borrow. It's as if we all had a way. New!
Kiss today goodbye. And what we taught tomorrow. We did what we did for
tomorrow.
We did what we had to do. We did what we had to do. Don't forget, can't forget,
what I did for love. What I did for love.
Thank you.
Thank you very much. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Thanks to all our
participants in Who Asked For It.
And we certainly hope you at home enjoyed that as much as we did here in the
studio. That was, of course, the album cut of that very popular show tune.
We have a wonderful show for you tonight. Those were the Peter Jackson dancers.
Is this correct or is this something we've made up?
Those were the Peter Jackson dancers from the Rainbow Grill. And thank those. I
did, didn't I? That's what I'm doing.
I'm thanking them for appearing with us tonight. And if you'd like, we can all
go up to the Rainbow Grill later and thank them in person.
Thank you.
