My next guest can currently be seen in two major motion pictures, Sam Shepard's
Fool
for Love, and believe it or not, he plays an angel in Walt Disney's One Magic
Christmas,
one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood.
Please say hello to Harry Dean Stanton.
Harry, come on out, everybody.
Hi, Harry.
Come on, thank you for coming here.
Have a seat.
All right.
How you doing?
God, it smells like a zoo out here.
No, well, we had some zoo animals.
Did you see the animals?
I thought he was shaving lotion.
No, Harry, come on.
Have you ever worked with animals in films?
Two-legged?
No, no, that's not funny.
No, that's not funny.
It's a strength animal.
Yeah, we'll begin again.
Have you ever worked with any animals in films, Harry?
Boy, you got a...
Did you just get up?
Yeah, now, that's what you said when you saw me.
Harry, this guy says to me, we met each other in the hallway, and he says,
what, Dad, did you just get out of bed?
Harry says that to me.
And he says, take a look at yourself.
Yeah, yeah, like you're an attorney or something.
Now, let's talk about some of these films.
This is a lengthy list of motion pictures you've been in.
Your first film, 1957, right?
Did I do all those?
Well, let's see.
Did you do them all?
What was your first film?
Revolt at Fort Laramie.
We called it Revolting Fort Laramie.
Well, according to this, your first film was Tomahawk Trail.
That was the second one, actually.
Oh, okay.
So, my mistake.
What part did you play in Revolt at Fort Laramie?
I played a union organizer.
No, a union soldier.
A little joke there.
You're trying to slide through, weren't you?
This is very hard to be funny.
Well, no, no, you don't.
I don't have to be funny.
We can talk straight.
You can just do anything you want to be.
Are you uncomfortable being here?
Well, I'm a little nervous because Sam Kinison told me
between 15,000 and 20,000 people watch this show.
That's not too bad.
Now, Harry.
Harry, you know what we can do?
We can cut you out of the turkey raffle.
The Proud Rebel.
What did you play in The Proud Rebel?
Do you remember that?
That was a long time ago.
I played a bad guy.
I beat up a dog.
And a couple of people.
I don't know.
But your career, your film career has been built on a character
that's not a real, not the guy next door.
You're kind of a nasty guy, kind of a weasel,
kind of a low-life guy.
It's a very negative attitude, man.
No, it's not.
I know.
I don't have a negative attitude.
It's the truth.
Well, I had a negative attitude.
Oh, you had a negative attitude.
Now, but now, in this Disney film, you play an angel.
Yeah, Christmas angel.
Uh-huh.
And how do you like that?
Well, it feels real good.
I'm listening to that.
Yeah.
So you would rather play parts that aren't, like in Repo Man.
You looked like a guy who would be repossessing cars.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But you would rather play parts that were more, oh, I don't know, nicer guy
kind of parts?
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
Working on that.
Can you hear me?
I did this three or four times, I did good at it.
You did what three or four times?
No, you're fine.
You're fine.
You're nervous because the airlines lost your luggage, aren't you?
No, I wear this in case the plane's hijacked.
Oh.
I say, you guys were late.
Now, tell me about Sam Shepard in Fool for Love.
You worked with him?
Yeah.
Now, what do you play in that film?
I play his father, real old, and I play him real young.
You're sort of the narrator of the film.
It's like my dream, in a way.
Yeah.
And did you like that part?
Yeah, I liked that part.
Yeah.
And how was Sam Shepard to work with?
Fine.
Yeah.
Did you get to know him well?
Did you know him before?
You're a lot of fun.
Thanks, Harry.
Thank you very much.
Did you get to know Sam at all?
Yeah.
Yeah?
Yeah, he's not easy to get to know.
He's quite fine.
Unlike you, Mr. Affable here, Mr. Salesman of the Black.
Last month, it's Harry.
And what would you guys do for fun?
I had a drink before I came on.
It's a little tipsy.
Oh, well, good.
Just announce it to the kids, Harry.
No, I'm just kidding.
I didn't have a drink.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Now, tell me some about Sam Shepard.
These people are funny, too.
Did Jessica Lange come around the set?
Oh, boy.
Yes, she did, as a matter of fact.
Nice woman?
Beautiful.
Did you ever go out socially with these people?
I don't remember, though.
Well, isn't it about time to raffle off that turkey?
Don't we have a...
No, we went out socially, really.
I'll be serious.
No, you did go out socially.
Now, we're going to look at some footage here from Fool for Love.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You got a cab waiting or something here?
Now, we'll get warmed up, and we'll have a real good thing going here.
All right.
Well, this is the same to doubleheader, Harry.
We got to...
Okay, let's...
Oh, and you're going to sing, too.
Oh, yeah, he's going to sing.
Don't worry.
I'm going to sing.
Let's look at the film first.
When are you going to sing?
Yeah, sure.
Let's look at the film first, and tell him what we're going to see.
I'll tell him later.
We'll talk about it later.
You already drank my tequila.
Come on.
I want to show you something.
No, come on over here.
I want to show you something.
Wait, wait.
I'm in the middle of something here.
I want to show you something.
Wait a minute.
I'm trying to talk to somebody.
Show you something actual.
Look at that.
Remember that?
Where'd you get this?
Uh-huh.
Now, take a look at that picture over there.
You know who that is?
I'm not sure.
It's Barbara Mandrell.
That's who that is.
Barbara Mandrell.
You heard of her?
Yeah, sure.
Well, would you believe me if I told you I was married to her?
No.
Uh-huh.
Yeah, well, you see?
Now, that's the difference right there.
I'm actually married to Barbara Mandrell in my mind.
Can you understand that?
Yeah, sure.
Oh, good.
I'm glad we have an understanding.
So, Harry, it looks like the part you're playing is autobiographical.
It's only a joke.
It's only a joke.
Harry, you're going to sing for us here, aren't you?
Uh, hey.
What are you going to sing?
Tell them what you're going to sing.
No, this is a...
Introduce the song.
This song is the theme song in, uh, Paris, Texas.
It's called Canción Mestecca.
I don't know how far we'll get with it.
All right.
Well, all right.
A little song from Harry Dean Stanley.
Very nice.
Very nice.
There we are.
Harry.
Verme tan solo y triste cual oca viento.
Quisiera llorar, quisiera morir de sentimiento.
Quisiera llorar, quisiera llorar, quisiera sol, suspiro por verte, ahora que es
lejos, yo vivo sin luz, sin amor.
We'll, we'll be right back.
Alright, you know, since Christmas is just two days off, we have a turkey here
and we think
it's between, I don't know, 12 and 20 pounds, it's not 20, it's not a 20, I'd
say this is
about a 15 pound turkey.
Huh?
No, it's not 20, this is lighter than a bowling ball, how could it be 20?
Anyway, we're gonna give it away, one of you people, Harry, Margaret or Jack.
I don't want a turkey.
Don't make trouble, Harry.
Alright, now you have your tickets right there, we're gonna draw for it right
now.
Now let me mix these up real good.
Can we have a drum roll, Paul?
Alright.
How do you open this thing up?
Oh, here it is.
Giving away the turkey.
I know, I know, let me mix them up one more time.
What?
Sorry.
Well, Harry, you know, actually I drew Margaret out first, so we're gonna give
it to Margaret.
He came out first.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Okay, right there, I'll let you know.
Safe fire.
My thanks to everybody who was here tonight, Margaret Smith, Harry Dean Stanton,
and Jack Hanna,
the director of the Columbus Zoo.
Jack, thanks again for bringing all the animals up here.
Thank you.
Tomorrow, folks, Michael Douglas will be here and songwriter George Cook.
Have a nice evening.
Your little.
Bring it down a little.
