All right.
My first guest tonight is one of the most popular musicians in the world.
He and his group Culture Club are currently in the middle of a U.S. concert
tour,
and this is their latest album right here.
It's called Waking Up with the House on Fire.
Please welcome back to this program, Boy George.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Perfect.
Yeah.
This one.
I'm excited not to mess around this time.
No, sir. Go right for it.
That, uh, that's a terrific look.
After doing the Carson show, I decided to come on here and wear this,
and you would never be able to ask me why I look like this.
I mean, what would be the point, really?
No, you look, you know, see, I'm all for this.
I think this is a, uh...
He's speechless.
How would you describe this exactly?
Now, the last time you were here, you didn't have the head gear, so...
How would you describe that?
I would describe it as, like, fab.
I'm sorry?
Fap?
Fab, F-A-B.
Oh, fab, F-A-B.
Uh, nice to see you again.
Thank you for coming back.
How are things on the tour?
Brilliant.
Yeah?
The press are being bitchy about me, as usual, but...
What do they say?
You call them bitchy.
What do they say that irritates you?
Everything.
I mean, where do I start?
Yeah?
Um, but the tour's been great.
I mean, playing in America's always brilliant, you know, like, the crowds have
been fantastic.
You know, there's a different sort of attitude to music here, you know.
I mean, people love the music, so, like, we go on stage and it's great, but...
Well, don't they love it to...
I'm sorry, what were you going to say?
I interrupted you.
No, you know, the press sort of, you know, they never go to a show and have a
great time today.
You know what I mean?
Um...
If you look at the crowd, like, everyone's standing up and there's always, like,
two press people sitting down, you know.
Yeah.
Everyone's sort of partying and they're sitting there writing notes, you know.
Now, why do you think that is?
Why do you think that they, that they...
Now, you're obviously unhappy, as you said, with things they're writing.
Why are they writing things that make you unhappy?
Um, because they're evil.
Do you have traffic wardens here?
Traffic wardens?
Like, people who sort of come and give you tickets when you park on the wrong
place.
Oh, sure, yeah.
They're like traffic wardens, aren't they?
They've got sort of warped mentalities, you know.
Yeah.
Now, where, where, where are you appearing, uh, where was your last date?
We played Meadowlands two nights ago.
Last night we played in Connecticut, Hartford, and we're on, at Madison on
Thanksgiving.
Uh-huh.
And do you, do you notice any different from any of these places?
Like, is it different when you go to a place in the Midwest from, say, the Meadowlands
or Hartford?
I say that in Texas it's quite different, you know.
There were people, you know.
There were people, I mean, when David Bowie first went to Texas, like, you know,
ten years ago,
somebody put a gun to his head and said, you know, leave town, faggot.
And, uh, you know, so it's sort of, it is very different.
Was that one of those traffic wardens you're talking about?
I think so.
But the one thing, I mean, for me to go down there looking like this, I think I
deserve an Oscar.
Uh-huh.
Uh, now, now, uh, you, you mentioned the press and so forth.
It, I remember you were on vacation and there was a picture of you on the front
page of some publication,
and, uh, I guess the, the gist of the thing was you hadn't shaved in a day or
so,
and there it is right on the front page.
Now, does that upset you, that you can't even let yourself go a little bit if,
if, if, in fact, that's, that's the right expression?
It's not, it's not, actually, it's nice to know that you can sort of not bother
dressing up and still make front page news.
Yeah.
Um, I suppose that people sort of have this impression that, you know,
underneath this, you know,
no hair stubble, you know, exists.
Uh-huh.
So, like, it was pretty shocking for the while Boy George grows a beard, you
know, I mean,
it's sort of really important stuff, isn't it?
Now, didn't you change, didn't you change your hair color also on vacation or
am I dreaming?
Had, had you noticed?
Well, it was, didn't, didn't it go blonde there for a while or something?
Well, it did, yeah, but I had to dye it blonde to get it red, you see.
Uh-huh.
That's the, you know, why do you have to do that?
Well, because it won't go red if you don't, you know, you put red dye over
black, it won't go red, you know.
Oh, I see.
It's just a, a technical thing, you know.
Yeah.
Well, it, it sure worked.
Oh, yeah.
Actually, I have something for you to put on, because you look really boring,
so put this on.
Come on, make it put it on.
Come on.
Woo!
Would you, uh, would you like to try this one?
No, thank you.
We'll bag that one.
It's a sport jacket.
They're, uh...
What's David letting me become fab?
Fab.
This is nice.
It is, actually.
I like this.
I do, I like this.
Thank you very much.
It's awfully, I like this.
I don't, no, I do.
I like this.
Can I help you with your luggage?
This is great.
Now, is this an expensive, uh, piece we have on here?
To you, it would be.
I'm sorry.
I'm being evil.
No, that's all right.
That's all right.
It's, no, I, I appreciate it.
That was, that was fun.
No, but it was very, actually, it was cheap.
And don't make any comments about that, either.
No, it's not.
I'm one of those people that believes just because you've got money to have to
spend it, you know.
So, like, when I have things made, I have them made on the cheap, you know.
Yeah, well, sure.
Why?
40 Indians in a room, you know, like, sewing away.
No, see, you don't, you don't have 40 Indians in a room sewing away.
You do, actually, and the tour starts in two years.
No, you don't.
You don't have 40 Indians.
You have, uh, these are made in huge factories, and everyone's making double
the minimum wage.
Not the way I made them.
No, play along.
You'll be, uh, what are we doing?
Oh, we've got a commercial, but we'll be right back.
You know, what we ought to do, uh, right after the show, we'll go down to the
river and help them unload freighters.
You cannot watch.
You mind if I slip out of this a little bit?
I don't think you should, do you?
No, I'll slip right out of it.
We'll slip right out of it.
Oh, that's a real closet job.
Thank you very much.
Let me put that over there.
It was awfully nice of you to bring me something to wear.
I do appreciate that.
Okay, well, you look better in it than you do now.
Thank you.
Oh, I did?
Well, um, now tell me what the Princess Margaret said about you.
What was the, uh, did she, in fact, say something nasty to you, or about you,
or what?
What was...
Yeah, she said I was a tart.
A tart.
Now, how did this come up?
Um, well, what happened is that we were doing a, it was a radio, like,
promotion show.
You know, it's all the DJs, you know, on the radio.
They have, like, a party, and you go and award them with prizes.
Mm-hmm.
Like, celebrities go along and give prizes.
And she was, like, host of the event.
And, um...
Princess Margaret is giving out awards to disc jockeys?
Exactly.
Really?
This is royalty?
Well, you know, she sort of, she had a photograph taken with me.
She shook my hand.
Mm-hmm.
And then she went away and she said, he looks like an over-made-up tart.
Mm.
In a very regal way.
And, uh, of course, the press jumped on it like hotcakes, you know, and it was
front page news everywhere, which was good for me and bad for her.
Yeah.
You had shirts printed up with the...
We did, actually.
We got this great tour shirt with her with my dreadlocks and hat, which says,
Boy George is not a tart, which a lot of people are wearing at the moment.
And, uh, also, you know, the funny thing is that we had a poll in England after
that saying, was she right to have called me?
And she lost three to one.
So, just goes to show you, really, it doesn't matter what you are.
You can't be rude to people.
No.
Well, it seems to me like they would, uh, they would be proud of you.
They ought to be.
I'll bring more money into the country than she does.
Yeah.
You know, I saw, I saw the Queen Mother a couple of weeks ago.
I like the Queen Mother.
Yeah?
Have you met the Queen Mother?
No, but she wouldn't be rude to anyone.
She's so sweet.
Yeah.
I saw her.
It was, actually, I didn't, I just saw her hat.
She had a very nice hat on.
Um.
We're into hats in England.
Now, tell me about this.
Now, you've got all of these, here is the Culture Club Boy George and His Own
Words magazine.
It's rubbish.
Now, did you, do you make any money off of this?
Now, that book should be called All the Worst Pictures Ever Taken of Boy George,
you
know, because it's just hideous.
Gee, it's hard to believe you've taken a bad picture, though.
You know, it's.
After looking at that, you'll be believed it, I'll tell you.
Now, how can they, how can they do this?
They sell it and you make nothing of it, right?
It's just, um, it's one of those things.
When you start out, what record companies do is they lease you out to these
different
studios to take your photograph, because they're never optimistic record
companies.
They always think you're going to flop.
Right.
So they sort of wheel you out in an iron lung and they say, look, photographing,
please
put them in your magazine.
And, you know, when you do make it, they have wonderful pictures of you to, uh,
print in
books.
Everything You Want to Know About Boy George and Culture Club by Wayne Rogers.
Wayne Robbins.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Wayne Robbins, yeah.
Now, is this on the level?
Did you guys, uh, okay this?
The funniest thing of all is that these people put in the book, thanks to Boy
George, you
know, I've never even met them, you know?
Oh, that's strange.
You know, we have one book out called When Cameras Go Crazy, which is a legal
culture
club book, which has pictures of me with hankies on my head on the beach.
Hankies on your head on the beach.
Yeah, it's all sort of stuff that we've given to the publishers to print.
Now, do we have a copy of that one here?
We don't, actually, but it's in the shops.
Go out and buy it, please.
Okay, we only have the frauds there.
Now, how many cities are you going to be in on this tour?
Well, we're nearly finishing now.
We've been to Texas.
We've been down south.
It was great, actually, because every night there was like 300, 400 people
standing
outside with banners saying Boy George is evil.
Really?
It's because they couldn't spell beautiful.
I would just think that people would be beyond that at this point, you know?
They are beyond, but what they're beyond, I don't know.
Now, are you and the band getting along all right?
Yeah, we love each other.
Yeah?
There's no jealousy, no bickering?
Well, it's like saying, you know, do every family, you know, like a family, do
they ever
argue?
Of course they argue.
Yeah.
And, you know, we do argue.
You know, there's no two ways about it.
But the Rolling Stones must have argued thousands of times, and they're still
together.
Been around quite some time.
You know, I just think it's journalists, they sort of get the privilege of
getting backstage,
you know, watching you change and stuff, and they sort of go back and report
these rumors.
Well, sure, if they're looking at you in the most intimate conditions, they're
going to
see things that aren't...
It's like assuming that, you know, because you're famous, you don't have
feelings, and
you don't argue.
Like, I'm sure Joan Collins often throws a fit, you know.
I mean, she often sort of, you know, hits her child for putting wire coat hangers
in the
cupboard.
So the band, now, weren't there rumors that the band was breaking up?
There was rumors that the band were breaking up, and it started off in USA
Today, which
I never read.
And they said that we were breaking up and that my ego was getting too big.
What they meant was my hat was getting too big, you know.
Now, do you guys all make the same amount of money, or are you just sticking it
out?
Right away, and they don't see any of it.
Shall I lie?
Shall I lie?
I do make more than them.
But it's only because they're...
Actually, for music...
Now, this is a change, isn't it?
Because I can remember a year ago...
Now, wait a minute.
Oh, no.
A year ago, it was...
I saw you guys all together somewhere, and they said, oh, no.
It all gets divvied up.
We're all making the same money.
For the music, we all make the same money.
For the music, we all make the same money.
But they have this doll out, Boy Snoopy.
Go out and buy it.
Boy Snoopy?
They have all these dolls out, which I get the money for.
Boy Snoopy?
And it is selling like hotcakes, I tell you.
Well, if we could just get it to sell like a toy.
Boy Snoopy?
We have...
There's three dolls out of me.
One's called Boy Snoopy...
You know, Snoopy doll, the one you all love to hate, you know.
Well, there's one of me with dreadlocks and a hat and a number shirt, which is
selling very well.
And we also have the Boy George cabbage doll.
Oh, my God.
Shut up.
When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you, okay?
That's right.
But now the fact that you're making more money on the personal sort of ventures,
does that cause trouble in the band?
No, no, not really.
You know, I mean, you know, everybody in the band does their own thing.
Like John produces other artists, so, you know, he makes enough money out of
that.
But basically, you know, once you get to a certain level, you know, you don't
reach about money, you know what I mean?
And you're making quite a lot.
What do you do with your money?
How old are you now?
23.
So what does a 23-year-old person do with that kind of dough?
You're making enormous sums of money.
I mean, that Boy Snoopy thing alone, that must...
Actually, the funny thing is, a lot of journalists like to look at us sort of
like pop stars.
It's like poor peasants who've just learned to write a check, you know.
But, I mean, I'm having no problems with my money, you know.
It's not a big deal for me, you know.
But do you do interesting things with your money, or do you just have accountants
who...
I do much more interesting things than I did when I didn't have any.
I would guess so, sure.
I mean, it's, you know, it's better to have it, isn't it?
Don't you think?
Do you buy boats with it?
Do you buy property with it?
Do you buy...
Oh, no, not things like that, you know.
I mean, I'm not materialistic in that way, you know.
I have one house.
Are you doing nice things for your mom?
Oh, yeah, she's coming to New York, actually.
You'll see her.
She looks fab.
She doesn't like anything like me.
Now, where will I see your mom?
You make it sound like...
Are you going to bring her by the house?
She's coming on the show.
Your mom's going to come on the show?
She's coming on the show, yeah.
I'd love to have your mom on the show.
Now, you're lying, aren't you?
No, no, no.
Your mom won't be on the show.
My mother will be in New York for Madison.
My whole family are coming.
Uh-huh.
And I do things like that, you know.
I look after my mother, you know.
Charity begins at home, you know.
Yeah.
Well, bring her by.
I will.
All right.
Anything else we ought to mention here?
The album is doing very well.
I went in at number 30 today, so I'd like to say thank you to everyone who
bought it.
I love you.
Well, thank you very much, George.
It was good to see you again, and come by again soon.
And seriously, bring your mom.
I will.
She knows about the hat, though, right?
Yeah.
All right.
George, nice to see you again.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
We have two applause here for station identification.

Now, do you guys all make the same amount of money, or are you just sticking it
out?
Right away, and they don't se
