Hi.
My next guest is from Hemingway, South Carolina,
and she spends most of her days peeling eggs.
As a matter of fact,
she supposedly does it faster than anyone else in the world.
Please say hello to Barbara Avant.
Oh, Barbara.
Hi, Barbara. How are you?
Hi, fine.
Nice to see you.
Did you have a nice trip up?
Yeah.
Never been to New York before?
No, never.
Are you enjoying your stay here in New York City?
Yeah, sure am.
Well, what things have you done besides being on the show?
Walked around, seen a lot of people.
A lot of people.
How many people are in Hemingway, South Carolina?
Oh, God, I have no idea.
There's not very many.
Would it be 20,000, 40,000, 50,000?
I don't even know whether there's that much.
Oh, so it may be an even tinier little town.
We have one red light.
Oh, one red light.
And what do you do with that?
Okay.
Hey, hold it.
Wait a minute.
This lady is here to peel eggs, ladies and gentlemen.
Now, why do you do this?
You do this for a company, I guess, right?
Yeah.
What's the company?
Atlantic Foods.
And what do they do with the eggs that you peel?
Well, we ship them out and they use them for salad bars.
Uh-huh.
All over the country?
Yeah.
All over the country.
And how many can you peel and ship out in a day?
Oh, well...
Well, I peel around by myself.
An eight-hour shift, I peel about 10,000.
Oh.
10,000 eggs a day?
Yeah.
How long have you had this job?
About four years now.
And at what point did you lose your mind?
Doesn't that just drive you nuts?
It does.
It does.
Yeah.
So what do you do while you're peeling the eggs?
Do you have friends doing it with you?
Yeah.
We have, like, five other girls doing it.
Uh-huh.
And can you talk and sing or whatever?
Yeah.
Can you smoke while you do it?
No, we can't smoke.
Can't smoke.
Now, are these eggs fresh by the time they get to the salad bars?
Well, yeah.
We have a special solution we put them in.
Oh, the special solution.
It's the old egg freshener.
Uh, all right.
Uh, I got a, I got a tub of eggs here.
You got a tub.
Why don't you just start and show me some of the finer points of peeling eggs.
Do you like this?
Are you making a lot of money doing this?
Well, enough, I guess.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Go ahead and start peeling there.
I got to put these gloves on.
Oh, yeah.
Put those gloves on.
A solution, huh?
Should I slip into the gloves myself?
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
Put on a glove.
You have a family?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Brothers and sisters?
Well, one sister.
One sister.
Is she looking forward to following you into the egg peeling business?
Um, yeah.
She peels eggs.
She does peel eggs?
She works at the company as well?
Yeah.
So it's a, it's a dynasty.
I don't know.
Okay.
Let's peel some of these boys.
These are all hard boiled, right?
Yeah.
Paul, check and see if this is hard boiled for us, will you?
Yeah.
Oh.
Okay.
Was that one hard boiled?
Yeah.
Okay.
Try this one then and see if that one.
Okay.
All right.
Here we go, Barbara.
Let's peel some eggs.
Here we go.
Okay.
Let's peel some eggs.
Yeah.
Oh, you mash them and then you roll them.
Yeah.
You ever make mistakes when you're doing this?
What do you do with this part?
Oh, this is the part that goes to the salad bar.
No.
No.
That goes down a drain.
Oh, my.
What a wonderful aroma.
I'd forgotten how many.
Okay.
They smell real good.
Yeah.
This many eggs is kind of.
All right.
Now we're going to, we're going to time you here.
We're going to put a timer on you in just a second.
Okay.
All right.
You want to try it now?
All right.
Here we have a minute.
We're going to see how many you can do in one minute.
Okay.
Here.
Let's take these, put these over here.
Oh, this stench is just unbelievable, isn't it?
Wow.
Okay.
Here we go.
We got the timer.
We're going to see how many Barbara can do in one minute.
You ready?
Yeah.
All right.
Go.
Okay.
A little music ball would be nice.
One.
Oh, you broke one.
Yes, I sure did.
They're not feeling all that great.
Okay.
How do you boil them?
Well, supposed to be boiled.
Well, a certain amount of time for a certain amount of eggs.
Yeah.
Like five minutes, ten minutes?
It's according to the size of the egg.
Well, what's the biggest egg you've ever peeled?
Not quite that big.
Now, would somebody come around and fine you because of these broken eggs there?
No.
We have different grates.
We put them in different boxes.
We put them in different boxes.
What's the difference between brown eggs and white eggs?
One has a brown shell and the other has a white shell.
Yeah, but in layman's terms.
Okay.
Three seconds.
Here we go.
Let's see how you did, Barbara.
Okay.
That's it.
Our competition is over.
Two, four, six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen, eighteen, twenty, twenty-three.
So, not too bad.
Two dozen.
How much longer do you think you're going to be doing this?
I don't know.
But so far, you're enjoying it.
Well, I'm still there.
All right.
Well, listen.
Come back and see us from time to time and let us know how you're doing.
Peeling eggs there in Hemingway.
Okay.
All right.
Nice to meet you, Barbara.
Thank you very much.
