Thank you very much for being here.
I'm very happy to be here.
You having a good year so far?
Oh, well, it's starting off pretty good.
Did you work New Year's Eve?
Well, yeah.
What did you do?
I'll have to take a little time to tell you about it.
Okay.
Because I was very fortunate to be invited to Birmingham, Alabama.
I was born in Prattville, Alabama.
To the American Bowl, Georgia State, and the other team was playing.
Where was it?
Oh, Michigan State.
Michigan.
And Georgia State, Michigan.
Yeah, that's right.
Georgia Tech.
You know why?
Because none of them get any scores on the board on the first half.
Uh-huh.
Oh, it was a low-scoring contest.
So, actually, then they introduced me.
See, so they brought me out there.
They rolled me out there with the police escort.
I thought, you know, like with the limousine, right?
So they said, ladies and gentlemen, we promise them to you.
Uh-huh.
The wicked, wicked, wicked, wicked Wilson Pickett.
Stand an ovation.
Stand an ovation.
60,000 people.
Uh-huh.
60,000.
I was so happy.
I felt so good.
Sure.
And I got up.
I took a bow for at least 15 or 20 minutes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I was...
You have to do that.
Yes.
But they said, Mr. Pickett, you're here for the reason.
And the reason was, I was to conduct 60-piece orchestra.
Oh, is that really odd?
This is what I heard about.
These are the instruments.
Yeah.
This was a...
Kazoos.
Kazoos.
Kazoos.
What was the number they did, the 60,000 folks?
Well, they did 50-some thousand.
And I think 8,000 and something stayed home.
They couldn't catch the planes.
There wasn't no room.
Right?
Anyway, this is promised to go into the Guinness Book.
Uh-huh.
I don't know whether it's going in, but I hope so.
But anyway...
What did they play?
What was the number?
Well, they were supposed to play Auld Lang Syne, America the Beautiful, but
they went...
A medley.
They were supposed to do something like that, right?
Yeah.
They went choo-choo.
Yeah.
Then choo-choo.
Choo.
Choo.
Right there.
No, no.
They really stuck the joint up.
So, if I don't go into the Guinness Book, you know, it wasn't me.
I was there.
You did your part.
I said, hit it.
When I said, hit it, hit it.
Yeah.
Nobody hit it.
You know, when you say, like if I say it to the man, a member right now.
Sure.
Hit it.
What would you do?
All right.
You know what I said?
Hit it.
Hit it.
Nothing happened, though.
Nothing happened.
No, because they were...
They were still going...
Yeah.
It's supposed to go...
Yeah.
Hit it.
Yeah.
Very impressive.
Very impressive.
Let me...
Wilson, we have a very short time.
Tell them about your nickname.
Tell them how we come to be known as Wicked.
Oh, yeah.
That's very...
I'll tell it real quick.
Okay.
Because I was with Atlantic Records for many years.
At that time, they had a lot of beautiful secretaries.
They wore the very short...
Probably still do, don't you think?
Yes, yes.
Yeah.
They wore the very short...
Mini dresses, yeah.
Wasn't that long.
Mm-hmm.
But I come in, you know, and...
You know, when they would bend over, on a clear day, you could see all the way
to the San
Francisco Bay.
So...
Wow!
Now, I don't know if this would go on your show, but you asked me, right?
No, I did.
I sure was curious.
Okay, but so I pinched, you know, just pinched one of them a little bit.
So Noreen saw it.
Noreen Woods.
She said, my, you sure are wicked.
There you go.
Out come Jerry Wexler, the president.
Oh, that's his next album, The Wicked, Wicked Pickett.
That's his next album.
Yeah.
Right?
And I've been branded with that name ever since.
It's also a felony.
Did I say that place?
Felony.

That's right.

A very funny woman.
We ran out of time for her tonight.
And she'll be back tomorrow, and we'll have plenty of time for her then.

Will that kill you to watch at home?
Have a nice night, folks.
Thank you very much.
