Welcome back, folks. I think you're going to enjoy this. My next guest is a
widely respected jazz musician and composer who has played with Benny Goodman,
Quincy Jones, Paul Simon, among others. Besides this, his work is known to
millions of people who never go to jazz clubs or concerts. We'll talk about
that a little bit later. Please welcome now, Mr. Toots Thielmans.
Thank you.

Several times, yes.
Where about?
Oh, last memory I have of, excuse my Belgian accent.
Certainly.
When I'm, the Paul Simon special.
That was when I really played with the poor guys together.
And you also worked together on Saturday Night Live with Paul Simon?
Yes, that was, yeah.
Six years ago.
I mentioned in the introduction that people who may not be jazz aficionados or
whatever would recognize some of your other work.
Well, I'm the man behind many scenes, I guess.
All right.
Well, let's start getting through some of these.
What about the old...
I was trying to dance, but I had a stroke eight months ago, so it's not...
Well, that's...
But I'll get back to your comedian friend any time.
Okay.
So give us something of what people would recognize from your other areas.
Well, what don't we do...
One, two, three, four...
One, two, three, four...
One, two, three, four...
One, two, three, four...

In addition to playing...
This and many other instruments, you whistle.
Yes.
Can we have a sample of your whistling?
Is that you on the commercial?
Yeah.
Well, they forgot it.
You forgot the song?
No.
Oh, no, they didn't forget.
No, of course not.
And then other things that we would remember.
Oh.
The song I wrote?
Oh, yes.
Yeah, tell them what this is.
We're going to pause for a commercial.
We'll be right back with more of our Toots Steelman.
Thank you very much.
Welcome back to the show.
We're done here.
I want to thank the studio audience, Mr. Toots Steelman.
Thank you, Toots.
You're going to play the theme from Midnight Cowboy as we leave?
Thank you, sir.
Jessica Savage, Richard Belzer, Paul Schaefer, and the band Bill Wendler are
announcer.
Tomorrow night, Meat Loaf will be here, and another film from my dog, Bob.
Thank you, folks.
Good night.
Paul, my next guest is a respected jazz performer and composer whose work is
also known to millions
of people who are not jazz fans.
We'll talk about that later.
And ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back Mr. Toots Steelman's Toots.
Thank you, sir.
The End

Very nice, Touch. Terrific. Have a seat. We'll pause here for a commercial,
then we'll be right back to talk with Mr. Toots Thielmans. Come on back, folks.
Thanks, folks. Very nice. You mentioned that that was your favorite song, right?
Yes. My wife's also. It's Paul Simon. I do it for you a lot.
It's terrific. Tell me, we mentioned in the introduction that people are
familiar with your work, whether they know it or not. Show them what we're
talking about here.
Behind many scenes, behind many scenes, behind many scenes, behind many scenes,
behind many scenes, for instance.
Now, is that you whistling whenever we hear that? Yes, yes.
And did you also write that? And did you also write that? No, I had nothing to
do with it. They were looking for somebody. Well, I had made a record where I
whistle and play the guitar at the same time. But anyway, I became known. I
attracted some attention with that. And then I said, Mr. Thielmans, can you
whistle like somebody who cannot whistle? So, yes, at those prices, sir.
What else would folks be pleasantly surprised to learn you were responsible for?
Hard to believe, but...
This is the theme from Sesame Street. Now, interesting, this is a program that's
been on the air 15 years. The theme has been played over and over and over and
over and over again.
I made $47 worth.
$47. Educational, you see.
Educational television. That's what they explain to you, huh?
There's some others, right? The movie themes.
Yeah. Oh, this one.
Midnight Cup.
Very nice. Very impressive.
The list of people.
The song.
Bluesette, I wrote.
You want to explain a little bit about how this came about? This was...
Well...
Maybe we don't have time. Go ahead and play a little bit.
Then we'll talk and see what we got here.
I gotta hold it up.
Thank you.
That's terrific.
We have to go away here again, Tuch, but we'll be right back, folks.
One more commercial, and then we'll see you.
Thank you very much, Bill.
Tuch, thank you for being on the show.
Good to see you again, sir.
Nice music, as always.
Also, my thanks to Julie Ridge, the woman who swam around Manhattan twice.
We figured about 36 miles.
They figured.
We had nothing to do with it.
Sandra Bernhardt.
My thanks to Sandra for being here.
Paul and the band, of course.
Mr. Bill Wendell, thank you.
Tomorrow night, Michael Keaton, Feeway Bill, and David Fuhrer.
Have a good night, folks.
Thank you very much.
Sitting in with our band tonight is a real musical legend.
His name is Toots Thielmans.
He is a respected composer and performer who has also written or performed such
popular numbers
as the theme for the Midnight Cowboy, the Old Spice theme you've heard on
television,

City
and also at the Pensacola Florida Arts Festival next weekend, which is not here

Hecksure State Park. Is that true? Hecksure State Park? I slip Long Island.
Please welcome one of the greatest harmonica players of all time, Toots Thielmans.
