My next guests are the two people behind some of the great rhythm and blues
songs.
In their 22 years together, these folks have been responsible for such hits as
Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand, Your Precious
Love, and Solid.
This is their new album here. Let me just open it and take a look.
Seems to be styrofoam more than, there it is, a copy of the new album right
here.
But it won't damage your needle.
Anyway, the album is called Real Love, folks. Please say hello to Ashford and
Simpson.
I had to learn, learn a lesson, never forget to count your blessings.
I had to learn, learn a lesson, never forget to count your blessings.
You can't say, I love you too many times.
Oh, no, no, no, no, simple things, mean so much.
Like, when was the last touch?
When was the last kiss?
When did you hold him like this?
I was lost, I was lost, the one I saw.
Searching around for something new.
Before you made the same mistake.
Let me pass this on to you.
I had to learn, learn a lesson, never forget to count my blessings.

Nice to see you.
How are you doing?
Nick, nice to see you.
Thank you very much.
We'll do a commercial, then we'll be right back.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Thank you, boys.
Hi, staff, you guys here.
Valerie Simpson, Nick Ashford.
You sound wonderful.
Thanks for being on the show.
And you smell great.
One of you, I'm guessing it's you.
You smell terrific.
You know, this is unbelievable.
Ain't no mountain high enough.
Reach out and touch somebody's hand.
Your precious love solid on and on and on.
One of you, I'm guessing it's you.
You smell terrific.
You know, this is unbelievable.
Ain't no mountain high enough.
Reach out and touch somebody's hand.

Your precious love solid on and on and on.
What was the first song you guys wrote together?
Very unknown.
It's called I'll Find You.
I'll Find You.
Did you sell it to someone?
Yes, we did.
We sold five songs, as a matter of fact, for $75 at the time.
Oh.
How old were you then when you were doing this?
Just kids?
I'm high school at that time.
And did somebody record those songs?
No, we're wondering in whose desk they're sitting right now.
Who bought them for $75?
He shall remain nameless.
Okay.
Nameless.
Okay.
And now you got a restaurant.
Yes.
And people from the front.
And when are you coming?
Well, as soon as I'm invited.
Okay.
But you know, some people from the show went over there and they said it was
great.
Ah, I heard.
And there's some kind of a special tonight if people come into the place and
say they saw
it on television.
Don't try.
Don't try.
Don't try.
Is that the deal?
It's on the house?
Is that some wine or something?
Don't try.
What kind of stuff is it here?
I have a menu right here.
Let's see.
Now, do you guys, you don't work in the restaurant, do you?
No.
No.
But we're there quite often.
Do you know what's going on in the restaurant?
Of course.
Do you go into the kitchen at all?
No.
We don't want to know what's going on in there.
No.
We just want to know what's coming out on time.
I see.
You want to look at the cash register as well.
Yes.
Okay.
Now, did you help prepare the menu, either of you guys?
No, I can't say that.
But we have tasted.
We helped select the food.
So you know what's in there?
Yeah, we know.
Let me just ask you about a couple of the items on the menu.
Okay.
I feel like I'm in school.
Is this a test?
And everything I mentioned tonight, by the way, is yours for the asking if you
go in
there and mention that you saw it.
It's yours on David Letterman.
Fried quahog clams.
Oh.
Is quahog, is that right?
That's classy now.
Q-U-A-H-O-G.
How do you pronounce that?
Quag.
Quag?
Quag clams?
Yeah.
With a squib knocket chili sauce.
That sounds like a tool from Craftsman.
Paul, I'm going to need that half-inch squib knocket if you have it over there.
$5.50.
This is an appetizer.
That sounds pretty good.
Yeah, do you like that?
I love it.
It's in a nice fried crispy.
Yes.
Tasty.
Delaware crab cakes.
Those are great.
Angel on horseback.
What is that?
It's very good.
I've had it three times and I still don't know what it was I was eating, but I'm
going to try it again.
Uh-huh.
What is this?
Cornflakes.
How are those prepared exactly?
It's a joke.
There are no...
And is it a big success, the restaurant for you guys?
Oh, yes.
Wonderful.
Is this something you always wanted to do is have a restaurant?
Yeah, it's...
We thought it would be fun.
Yeah.
You know, have a...
Someplace to hang out.
Has it been fun so much?
Oh, yeah.
And do you hang out there?
A lot.
If people go there, they'll actually see you.
Sure.
We saw Paul there.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Is that right, Paul?
It's great there.
Yeah, all right.
Are you guys going to be touring soon?
You have the new album?
September.
September.
Nick, nice to see you.
We'll be right back.
We're almost done for the week.
I want to apologize to Lester Lannan, Society Orchestra Leader.
He will...
He had a gig, actually, and had to leave.
No.
We'll have him back as soon as possible.
We ran out of time.
My thanks to everybody else who was here with us.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
We'll be right back.
