Thank you so much. Welcome back to the show. Let me tell you about Monday's
program. Jay
Lena will be here, Robert Gordon and Ann Wedgworth. And also this is a repeat
so you
can watch someone else's damn show. Our next guest tonight is the director of
the Smithsonian
Institution Insect Zoo in Washington, D.C. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome
the lovely,
the talented, Sally Love. I don't know. Oh, hi. Hi. You are. You're lovely and
talented.
Thank you. Nice to have you here. The Smithsonian is a huge compendium storehouse
for everything
interesting and valuable to the society, right? Exactly, right. And this is a
separate facility
which is just an insect zoo. Nothing but live insects. Yeah, and what do we
call that? This
is etymology? Entomology. Entomology. Etymology is words. Words. That's right.
These are insects.
Entomology. And you know all about them? A little. Yeah. How long have you
worked there?
Four years. People come and visit and look at the insects?
Yeah. Sometimes they touch them. Touch them? And we're going to try and get you
to do some
of that tonight. Oh, I'd be happy to. Okay. Is this a big facility? Huge. Okay.
All of these
from the United States or elsewhere? No. Some of them are from a lot of places
around the world.
Well, let me take this. Oh, gee. I knocked it over. Is that all right? Yep.
That's okay.
That's the last of the serum we have. That's the antidote. So if I get stung,
there could
be trouble. All right. Now that... Oh, geez. I thought that was a leaf. That's
exactly what
you're supposed to think. Yeah. But what is it? That's amazing.
This is a leaf insect. Wow. Very scientific name. And you made that, right?
Yeah. This
is actually Play-Doh. And where do you get... Where does this come from? I've
never seen
anything like that. This is from Sri Lanka. Uh-huh. From the tropical
rainforest. Actually,
this is a little young one. Yeah. We don't... How big do they get? About three
inches. Big
enough for like a good salad? A very small salad. Um... And... But they're...
They're harmless,
right? They're vegetarian. Yeah. Isn't it amazing that in this world we have
all kinds of different
living things and each has a purpose? Isn't that amazing? Yeah. I don't have to
get snide about
it. I just don't... But I mean, this... This one probably eats something that
would keep other
things from growing or something like that, right? Not really. Oh. No. This is
just decoration,
then? Exactly. Would you like to try it? Oh, sure. To hold it? Uh, no. I think
we should put it
right there. Okay. That's amazing. Uh-huh. Okay. Let's look at some of the
other stuff here.
Wow. That's... Okay. Now, this really is silly putty. Mm-hmm. This is a tobacco
hornworm. Yeah. Now,
that grows in the United States? Uh-huh. And, uh, that... Is it good for
tobacco or bad for tobacco? It's
real bad for tobacco. Bad for tobacco. If you're going tobacco. Do I need to
touch this? Uh-huh. Well...
I've never seen that color. It's, uh... It's like an aqua, isn't it? It's turquoise.
Yeah. Now,
this turns into a butterfly at some point? Turns into a moth. Turns into a moth.
And you have one of
those here? Of course. How long... How long is it in this form? Oh, about five
weeks. Uh-huh. And then,
how long is it alive as a moth? Three days. So that's not much of it. Yeah.
They just live long
enough to mate, lay eggs, and that's it. Yeah. No retirement plan or anything.
No. No. That's...
No vacation home, probably, either. Uh, okay. That's... That's amazing. This is
a tobacco thing. All right. Take it off my hand.
Sure. Take it off my hand. All right. Okay. You must have fun at this place,
right? We have a really
good time. Yeah. Oh, this one's missing. Oh, no! No. Is it really missing
something? Yes, it is.
Okay. What was it, exactly? So... It was a walking stick, and I think it walked
out. Walking stick,
and... They pointed it out. We found it. Uh-huh. Oh, here it is, right here. It's
under the... It's
hanging on to the... You want to come over and get it, Sally? You sure you don't
want to? I don't,
I'm afraid... It won't bite, really. I know, but I'm afraid I might, you know,
inadvertently
mash it. We don't... We don't want that to happen. Oh, I see. Now, these are
amazing. I would... You could... You could see
these be all over you, and you'd never... Oh, God. Now, what is that one? This
is a walking
stick, also. This one's from Australia. Uh-huh. This is from Arizona. Wow. Now,
how do you get
these things? We raise them. You do raise them there at the zoo? Mm-hmm. Isn't
it amazing
that something just that fragile is actually alive and, you know, crawling up
your arm? Would
you like to try it? Mm-hmm. Try what? I mean... Can you get it off my back,
please? Get it... How do you get
it off your back? Well, it'll be all right. Thank you. Well, I got this thing.
I mean,
you must have an assistant who can help you with that later, right? Yeah, Jim Fowler's
in the back. Okay. All right. How much time do we have? We have three and a
half minutes.
Let's see everything here. Okay. Let's take a look at everything you have.
Anything poisonous
that we've seen so far? Uh-huh. No, no, not so far. Nothing poisonous. Okay. We
have
this. Okay. That's a... I'm going to bring this out so you can see it. That's a
scorpion?
This is a whip scorpion. A whip scorpion. Uh-huh. And where are they from? This
is from
Arizona. Uh-huh. And it's... It sprays vinegar, if you can believe it, out of
the base of the
tail. Like... Is it like real vinegar? Like... It's real strong vinegar. Is
that where vinegar
comes from? They milk them, right? And that's a defense mechanism then, right?
Right. If you
put your face right down there, it would spray you. Uh-huh. And it's a... Bites?
Poisonous?
No. You want to try it? No. No. Try what? You say try it. What do you mean try
it? Yeah,
put it on a cracker. Let me try it, okay? No, there's nothing... When it comes
to something
like that, there's nothing to try. We look at it, and then we put it back. But
wouldn't
you... Wouldn't you like to say that you held a scorpion? No. I have one of
these. I don't
want to hold the scorpion. You just put it right back there. Do you want to
touch it? I'll
be happy to touch it right there. Yeah. That was a lot of fun. And maybe I'll
drive down
to the zoo and touch one again. All right. Now we have two minutes, Sally. Okay.
How
many insects do you have on display there? We've got probably, well, 70-some
species. You
know, I can smell vinegar. You can, yeah. Wow, that's beautiful. That's a tarantula.
Yeah,
would you like to try it? See, again, it's in the phrasing. And where are these
from? Mexico.
Mexico. Mexico. But you can pet it. You can pet it. Now, are these things
deadly poisonous
or just mildly? Want to try it? No, I don't want to try it. But what... Do they
bite? Do
they sting? Do they call you names? It's like a bee sting. What do they do? It's
like a bee sting.
Yeah. And is that fur or hair or what? Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. How old do these
things get
to be? About 20 years. Mm-hmm. Are any of these things endangered? Are they all
pretty
much proliferating? This is getting endangered because a lot of pet stores want
them and they
collect them a lot. Do they make good pets? They make great pets. The only
problem is they
outlive the family dog. Oh, is that right? Yeah. Gee, how would that happen?
Fido is belly up and we... They were such good friends, too. I never... But I
save the best
for last. Uh-huh. What is that one? This is a hissing cockroach from Madagascar.
Oh, wow. Can we actually hear him hiss? Well, if you put... Let's see. Put him
right... Why don't you
put him up to your mic? That's you, Sally. That's a pretty cheap trick. I know.
Director of the
damn zoo. And she's going... Hear that? I think he's hissed out right now. He
is hissed out or hissed off.
Now, this one, this one you have to. I have to, uh... Yeah. Okay. Okay. Well,
that's nice. Fine. Thank you. Thank you very much. Okay. Is that it? Uh-huh.
Just take him right off of there and put him back in the thing. Woo! Okay.
Sally, gee, it was a pleasure to meet you. Do you have more insects back there
you can bring up another time?
Sure. Love to. Okay. Great. Thanks. Nice meeting you. Nice meeting you.
This is Sally Love from the, uh, Insect, uh, Museum. Smithsonian. Take this
thing off.
It's really good. Yeah. Thank you very much. We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
