And can he say thank me for you were there!
Yeah!
Does that finally change your mind about a little piece of music?
It's very nice. They had no idea what they were saying, did they?
No, but they were very well rehearsed.
Okay, here it is. Ladies and gentlemen, letter number one.
At any rate, we got to get rolling here. Let's start by answering our viewer
mail.
Paul, by the way, I'm kind of getting to like the viewer mail theme now.
Paul Schaefer, ladies and gentlemen, and the viewer mail theme. Go ahead, Paul.
Yes, well, actually tonight I have something sort of special for tonight's show.
Here to sing Henry Mancini's viewer mail theme that we're all getting to love.
A special guest?
Yeah, a special guest.
This man is a composer's composer, an entertainer's entertainer.
Right.
Just last night with his partner, Leslie Brickus, he was inducted into the Songwriters
Hall of Fame.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Anthony Newley.
Anthony Newley, oh my God!
Viewer mail, viewer mail.
Friday is the night we read viewer mail.
First we read them, then we answer them.
It's a little thing we call viewer mail.
Everyone laughs at the viewer mail clown.
But he's only funny by mistake.
When the last letter's read, and he's gone home to bed.
They can't see his painted heart break.
They can't see his painted heart break.
The viewer mail phone.
The viewer mail phone.
Anthony Newley.
Nice job.
Anthony Newley.
Anthony Newley.
Oh my God.
A stirring rendition of the viewer mail team.
Anthony Newley.
Anthony Newley.
Where did you go?
Where did you go?
Where did you go?
- Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,

oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
- Anthony Muley, nice job. Anthony.
- Oh, wow, wow, a stirring rendition of the viewer mail theme.
Anthony Muley, where did he go?
- Where did he go?
- Disappears behind the paneling.
- I gotta explain, I played it in a totally wrong key.
- At some point did I hear you scream F sharp?
- Yeah, I played it in a totally different key.
- Uh-huh.
- Mr. Muley had to sing at a full two octaves above his normal range.
- Well, he still did-- - And he made it.
- He still did a nice job, and there he is there, get him!
He's trying to get away.
- I see, he may have hurt himself on that last note.
- There he goes, walking off into the shadows of ignominy.
Anyway, very nice, Paul, very moving, very inspirational.
- I can't believe he hit that last note, it was unbelievable.
- Yeah, okay.
- Full two octaves above his normal range.
- I know, okay.
- Here we go, letter number one.
- Paul, it's time for the Henry Mancini especially custom composed viewer mail
theme.
- Yes, it is, and tonight I have a special treat.
- I can see you're excited.
- For everyone.
- Excuse me, one second, hold it, one second.
- Yes.
- Do you have dairy products over there on your piano?
- I have fresh orange juice here.
- Oh, fresh orange juice.
- Yes, nothing but the freshest and the purest.
- May I, may I? - Clean it up before the show starts.
- Okay, what did you say?
- I said clean that up before the show starts.
- Clean it up, let me get rid of it right now.
- All right, all right.
And get rid of that unsightly cup.
- This thing, can I get a better cup?
Like a glass? - Yeah, we'll get you a nice cup.
- Maybe a nice mug like you have.
- Here we have, yeah. - Look how nice.
- Here, there's one right over here.
- Did you see the picture of the world's largest dog?
- Okay, all right, here we go.
- Wow.
- Oh, what you're drinking.
Listen, here to perform Henry Mancini's haunting,
viewer mail theme, is a guy we met in Las Vegas.
He's currently in town on Broadway doing a tribute to Elvis
in the "Legends" show at the Academy Theater.
Let's welcome Mr. Tony Roy.
- Tony Roy.
- Viewer mail, viewer mail.
Prior to years of night, we review the mail.
First we read them, then we answer them.
- That's the little day we call you a mail.
- Oh, view a mail.
- Oh, view, view, view a mail.
- Uh-huh, view, view, view a mail.
- Uh-huh, view, view, view a mail.
- I said we're gonna review a mail, yeah, tonight.
- Oh, view, view, view, view, view, view, view, view, view, view, view.
- All right, thank you very much.
- Thank you, Tony.
- Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
- Tony.
- Tony.
- Come on.
- Come on.
- All right.
- Thank you, Tony.
- Thank you, Tony.
- Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
- Tony.
- Tony.
- You're welcome.
- Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
- Tony.
- Tony.
- Tony.
- You're welcome.
- Thank you.
- You know, he left, Paul, before he could get a look at the picture of the
world's largest dog.
- Zorba.
- I know.
- They left London, checked into a hotel somewhere here in the United States,
and we don't know what happened to them.
- I understand.
- Letter number one.
- Well, that was peppy, wasn't it?
- It was great.
Great way to start on.
- Letter number one.
- All right, let's get on with it.
It's quite a night for us here, ladies and gentlemen.
We've got a big, big program.
Let's not waste any time.
Let's do our viewer mail that has accumulated over the last seven days.
Here we go.
Our viewer mail.
Paul?
- Oh, Dave.
- Yes.
- I have something a little bit, as a matter of fact, very special for everyone
tonight.
Here to perform the haunting theme from viewer mail.
- Right.
- Is the guy who composed it and joining him, a special guest vocalist.
These two cats happen to be appearing together tomorrow night at the Jones
Beach Music Theater.
So let's really hear it for the great Henry Mancini.
- Henry Mancini.
And the one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.

- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- The one and only Johnny Mathis.
- Behind the paneling.
- Well, now, see?
It's just like a TV show.
Where do those guys go?
- They're gone.
- When they leave there.
- Wait, there goes one of them.
- They just kind of fade into the wall.
- There he is, look at that smile.
- Thank you very much, Henry.
All right, all right, get out, that's it.
The haunting and lovely refrain from the viewer mail theme.
- Isn't that beautiful.
- Henry Mancini and Johnny Mathis.
Now, what do we do?
Viewer mail?
Sure, why not?
- This is where we do it.
It's hard to follow that though, isn't it?
- It is, isn't it?
- There they are right there,
sneaking through the shadows.
- Letter number one.
Let's get to the viewer mail.
Paul, do you have the lovely Henry Mancini theme
for viewer mail?
- Yes, not only do I have.
- The viewer mail theme.
Here we go.
- Not only do I have the theme,
but I'm thrilled this evening to have some very special musical guests
helping me out with tonight's viewer mail theme.
They are in town at the city center through the 17th
as they kick off a big nationwide tour.
And it's the first time in history that these cats have ever performed in the
United States.
So, under the direction of Colonel Anatoly Maltsev,
and conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Igor Agafonikov,
with concertmaster Vladimir Ogarkov on piano,
all the way from the Soviet Union,
let's have a big glasnost welcome.
This is totally serious for 18 members of the Red Army Chorus.
- Oh.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- There's nothing left to do now but surrender.
-
- Nice job, gentlemen. Thank you very much.
Viewer mail, ladies and gentlemen. Let's get to it. Letter number one.
-

Okay, that's, that's the viewer mail. Hit it, boys.
- Thank you very much.
