Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir on Letterman, April 13, 1982

it goes up there and then right down there and then that's it yeah it hurts
yeah well after a
while see these you build up calluses like a mushroom okay now go ahead and if
you strum that
let's see yeah wait this yeah
what's your problem yeah great all right working for the man
yeah you ever lost one of those things I never lost one of those things
practice that maybe you can go to the show
come New York City where they run the odd couple five times a day it's late
night with David Letterman
tonight Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead
authors Jersey Kositsky, Small Town News and Dave's Video Funhouse
and now the man who has nothing to do with the death of this fellow David
Letterman
thank you very much welcome to the show my name is Dave Letterman today is
Tuesday the what do you think fall?
answers
Tuesday the 13th of every fall thank you very much well you folks having a nice
time so far?
before I tell you who's on this show we have a fine show prepared for you all
across North America I was just listening to the discussion now on the news
about Alexander Hayes and Dave's Video Funhouse
who's trying to negotiate some settlement between Argentina and the Falkland
Islands and Great Britain
apparently now from the beginning I was having difficulty taking this seriously
apparently now the motives for the Argentines taking over the islands according
to the president Brazil dared him to do it
Brazil dared him to do it
welcome to the show we got a good one here
uh... let me get right to this Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead
and uh... also an actor and a fascinating personality Jersey Kositsky with his
eye
and if that weren't enough and by gosh it ought to be enough a new feature on
this program
a new feature on this program
Dave's Video Funhouse
whoo hang on
uh... the gentleman over there of course is Paul Schaefer

that's what I'm excited about
well uh... everyone who's on the show uh... usually knows you and has worked
with you before
do you know uh... Mr. Garcia and Mr. Ware
I unfortunately don't know them personally uh... but I'm real excited that they're
here I've been to town all day
and I don't want to say anything more but let's just say I'm peeking right now
hmmm...
alright
uh... this is for me this is for me
Paul... Paul is peeking right now that's in... it's in peek-a-boo I think
just in case my mom is tuning in
thank you very much
thank you very much for being back to the show Jersey Kaczynski will be joining
us later and my first guest for more than 17 years
the Grateful Dead are protecting rock and roll history with very few personnel
changes and uh... ecstatic fans known as deadheads
they are truly a cultural phenomenon but the Grateful Dead are more than just a
band they are a community of about 100 people whose energies go into their
albums concerts and films
would you please welcome
two members of the Grateful Dead
Jerry Garfield
and Bob Rear
hello
hello
hello
hello
hello
welcome
welcome to the program gentlemen
let me ask you just a question you're probably tired of hearing of
uh... hearing uh... you probably wouldn't know anybody represent uh... uh...
San Francisco and uh... all of uh... the BN and that sort of thing in those
days
and what year would this... what year would this have been? 60 uh...
um... somewhere between 64 and 67
now that seems...
no... it was... it was... it was... it was... it was... it was... it was... it
was... it was... it seems like a very romantic exotic town
was that fun uh... exciting?
oh yeah
yeah
yeah
uh... can you describe uh... your favorite memories from that era?
uh... well uh...
first off it was the acetate and here was Bill, huh?
yeah
yeah
yeah
no fun in a fog in a glass of milk
and uh...
and uh...
and uh...
and uh...
what?
and?
you were meant to say
uh... wait...
I was gonna apologize but I haven't any memory
uh...
I'm pretty sure it was fun though
uh...
uh...
did... did you have any... any sense that things uh... were ever going to be
changed after that?
well I guess your memory of taking a hike is one
oh definitely
yeah
the thing about... the thing... it seemed is that... that uh... at the time it
seemed as though things were gonna change real fast
you know?
because... because uh... there was this amazing momentum I mean it started out
like... when the accidents were happening they started with uh... you know...
50, 60 people or something like that in a matter of weeks
that it was... they'd escalated to 3,000 or something like that
it was... it had this amazing effect of uh... uh... you know... this jugularity
of uh... picking up lots of people as it went along
so it seemed like things were happening uh... tremendous uh... there was a
sense of history going on here you know at the time
everybody was conscious of it
now uh... I mentioned in the introduction here that you uh... you have your own
self-sustaining community
uh... of about a hundred folks who go into the production of the films and
records and so forth
do you still have that same feeling in... in your little community?
yeah, sort of
pretty much, yeah
uh... do you find yourselves isolated to a certain extent?
yeah
is... is that good?
uh... probably... well it depends you know... it's good for... it's probably
good for us
yeah
we would probably need more different interesting people if we weren't so
isolated but we are
yeah, that's true
uh... this is... the phenomenon of uh... the uh... the uh... the phenomenon of
your fans uh... people who enjoy the video
uh... the deadhead
uh...
you got an ashtray?
an ashtray?
yeah
I think we can get you one of the strokes
that'd be nice
uh... what... what does that name typify?
ashtray?
no, no, no
I'm kinda new here
so am I
um...
we've all doin' out there
yeah, uh... what does that mean exactly?
the grateful dead?
no, no, no, no... the deadheads
is it just a catchy phrase?
or...
um... yeah
it just sort of turned up really
I mean uh...
well there were acidheads
you know what?
there were uh... you know speedheads
and uh... grassheads
and now it turned into deadheads
yeah
that's generally thought of as a flattering term though
you think so
yeah
uh...
if the head fits where it?
uh...
you gentlemen just finished uh... two nights in uh...
over in uh...
in uh...
in uh...
and uh...
oh I'm sorry... Nassau
and uh...
uh...
you can continue to do a lot of big concerts
but you don't sell as many records as other
uh...
uh... concert groups
yeah
yeah
and as a matter of fact
you don't mind people taping your music in concerts
not particularly
and why?
that seems to be defeating the idea of selling records
well if we ever make a real good record
then uh...
then probably they'll rush out and buy that anyway
yeah
yeah
and besides the...
bring back memories to them and all that kind of stuff
and the shows are never the same ever
yeah
uh... i mean not even ever
you know what i mean
and uh...
sometimes they're remotely the same
yeah sort of
uh...
and when we're done with it
they can have it you know
uh-huh
uh...
uh...
if they will
yeah sure
we're gonna interrupt here for a commercial now
you two gentlemen are going to do something
is this correct?
that has never been done before musically
in this country
when we come back
gee i don't know
well we're going to find out
uh...
we'll be right back with bob weir and jerry garcia
