Thank you so much.
Thank you. Welcome to the program, ladies and gentlemen.
Tonight is Thursday night.
Thursday is always a special night for us, isn't it, Paul?
Very special for me personally.
That's right, and we certainly hope you at home are enjoying it as much as we
are here in the studio.
We really are, aren't we, Paul?
I'm enjoying myself very...
Well, let's do something a little special musically for the folks.
Here we go. Anything you want. You pick.
You call it.
No, every night I come out and I suggest something.
Tonight, you do it.
Let's do a little something from the Brandenburg Concerto.
What do you say?
You know what might be nice?
The Canadian National Anthem.
Just the final refrain.
I'm not singing it, no, but just you sing it.
Have you ever heard this song?
It's a stirring National Anthem.
The Canadian...
You were looking for naked women and male strippers and stuff.
All right.
Just a little bit of it, Paul.
Oh, Canada, we stand on guard for...
What do you say?
So, uh...
So now you know what I'm talking about when I say that Thursday is kind of a
special night for us here.
It's very special for me.
What do you think, Kevin?
Here's our friend, Mr. Paul Schaefer from Canada, ladies and gentlemen, Paul.
Oh, Canada.
That's it.
Thank you very much.
Right on you.
Thank you.
David, I know that's one of your favorites, Oaf Canada.
Oh, it's a great song.
It's a great song.
You know it from the hockey games.
The final reprise, the final...
What do they say in the song?
The final...
The coda.
The final...
You might say the coda.
The coda.
Yeah, it's very, very stirring.
By the way, Paul, you weren't at the meeting this afternoon.
We got a memo here from the NBC legal department and what else do we call them?
Standards and Practices?
You can't, on this program, say the word Johnson.
Oh, well...
You can't.
Don't say it, then.
No, you can't.
You can't, in any context, use the word Johnson.
Well, you could say it if it referred to your neighbors down the street.
I think that the way it came down was you can't say it at all.
Johnson.
You just can't refer to...
Mr. Johnson down the street.
My old friend, Mr. Johnson?
No, I don't think...
You can't say that?
I don't think you can say that.
I think you just, you know, you can say it as long as you're not referring to
your...
When you, uh...
When you, uh...
David?
That's, that's what they meant, wasn't it?
Standards and Practices?
Is there something you know about the show that I don't know?
Are we just testing equipment here, or...
Ladies and gentlemen, just let me apologize.
Because, you know, he's, he's not an American, so...
And I never...
Woo!
This way.
Yeah.
You know, that's the secret of good comedy.
Leave a little something to the imagination.
I guess I'll just be catching the plane to Canada...
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, so much for my little routine about the word Johnson, huh?
Oh, you know what?
I, you know, is there any point in going on?
Oh, I know.
I've, I've been stunned.
I stopped a hot piece of lead here.
What do you want?
Come on.
I've got a sucking chest wound.
Come on.
Uh...
Well, would I come to your house and say that?
No.
No, sir.
I, I apologize.
All right, well, okay.
They just take it out anyway.
They take it right out of the table.
What if they don't?
What if somebody's asleep tonight and it goes right out?
Well, then we made broadcasting history.
Yeah.
Arrivederci.
Adios.
I can't believe it.
I just can't believe it.
300 strangers.
You just said it like that.
I've never seen you, I've never seen you react to anything this way before.
Well, like what am I?
You know, I mean, uh, okay, here we have, uh, all week, folks, we've had from
the, uh,
from the Museum of American, uh, what, what is it?
It's okay, Paul.
Okay, thank you, ma'am.
Oh, my God, turn the hose on her.
Uh, anyway, we've had meteorites here in the studio from the American Museum of
Natural
History in New York City.
There they are, the, uh, Henberry, the Mungindi, and the Canyon Diablo.
Now, the Canyon Diablo is missing.
Where the hell is that one?
Because they have to go back tonight.
Who has the, uh, the other meteorite?
Tommy, did you see it?
Yeah.
The other meteorite.
I have it right here.
Yeah, okay.
All right.
Thank you very much, Tommy.
Thank you.
Thank you very much, Tommy.
Thank you.
Now, uh, some of these things are between 10,000 and 100,000 years old, and, uh,
tonight,
an unprecedented television event.
Well, I guess this will be our second unprecedented television event, come to
think of it.
Okay.
Okay, great.
We'll just use that one now.
Paul, I tell you what, we ought to do, uh...
We should work up, uh, O Canada for the folks a couple of weeks from now.
You and I, a little duet version of it?
Sure.
Acapella, yeah.
You do it very, very nicely.
Great song.
It's a stirring song.
The Canadian National Anthem.
But it's one of several anthems.
You know it, of course, from, uh, the games.
Yeah.
Hockey games and such.
You know, the fun we have here at the building.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's me and Paul.
Ladies and gentlemen, he's young, he's personable.
Mr. Paul Schaefer.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Quick impression.
A lounge singer doing the way we were.
Hey, memories.
That's it.
Very nice, Paul.
You know what we're gonna do next week sometime.
We're gonna have sheet music printed up.
Or at least, uh, papers with the words to O Canada on them.
And we're gonna distribute them throughout the audience.
And we're gonna sing O Canada.
Paul, do that in one of my favorite little part there at the end where it's
really rousing.
Oh, Canada.
Oh, Canada.
We stand on guard for.
Oh, Canada.
We stand on guard for.
You know that.
Oh, no, no, let's hear it.
Yeah.
Here's that.
This is our Sinatra.
Hockey night.
This is Sinatra.
How are you doing?
Stand on guard for.
D.
We'll do it next week.
Everybody in the audience, we're gonna sing O Canada.
Great song, great nation.
And we'll do it next week.
Everybody in the audience, we're gonna sing O Canada.
Great song, great nation.
And we'll do it next week.
We'll do it next week.
Everybody in the audience, we're gonna sing O Canada.
Great song, great nation.
And we'll do it next week.
We'll do it next week.
We'll do it next week.
Everybody in the audience, we're gonna sing O Canada.
Great song, great nation.
And it'll be plenty of fun for us.
What are we doing now?
Tonight, we're gonna sing O Canada.
And you know why?
Why?
It's a rousing, exciting, reverent salute to a wonderful country.
Yes, it is.
And how many people know the national anthem O Canada?
I'll tell you what, the people from, yeah, the guys from Toronto
and the man from Montreal and somebody else, come down here.
We gotta pass out the lyrics.
Here we go.
Come on down quickly.
Here you go.
Bill, hand this to this gentleman.
No, no, don't waste any time, sir.
We're gonna sing O Canada tonight if it kills us.
No, no, we're not going up back up there.
Go, pass him out.
Pass him out.
Man thinks we're doing his life story.
There you are.
Here, divide him with your friend.
Make sure everybody gets one.
Pass him out.
Okay.
You're gonna help us here.
Paul, are you gonna do this?
Yes.
Now this is, we're doing this again because it's one of your favorites.
It's one of my favorites.
It's a rousing anthem.
It's a rousing anthem.
And it's a good way for us to begin the week because people seem a little
sleepy from the holiday.
All right, let me take everybody through this very quickly.
Okay, first of all, let me, you know what the Norwegian national anthem is?
The Norwegian theme?
No.
Hey, look me over.
No, no.
Belgium is let me call you sweetheart.
No.
Yep.
Bolivia is in the good old summertime.
And Finland is the hokey pokey.
It's also the national dance there.
Okay.
Now we have the lyrics right here.
Yeah.
Hurry up with those.
Everybody get a piece of, you all have the lyrics?
Okay.
All right.
Now, Paul, you give us the music.
This is how it's going to go, yeah.
Okay.
Very quickly, for those of you who aren't Canadian, but just like Canadians.
It's O Canada.
And it goes like this.
O Canada.
Right.
Our home and native land.
True patriot love in all our son's command.
Yeah.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise, the true, no strong and free.
And stand on guard.
O Canada.
O Canada.
We stand on guard for thee.
Yeah.
O Canada.
Right.
Glorious and free.
O Canada.
We stand on guard for thee.
O Canada.
We stand on guard for thee.
Big note at the end.
When we do it here.
Yeah.
You going to finish this?
When we do it, we sing like Mounties, right?
Yes, we do.
We sing.
Give us a little demonstration of how, like, Nelson Eddy kind of mounted.
O Canada.
O Canada.
We stand on guard for thee.
Oh.
All right.
Now, let's do it.
You want them standing for this?
I think everybody should stand out of respect.
Okay.
Now, seriously, don't screw this up.
No, go ahead.
Stand up.
But don't.
Now, don't screw this up.
We want it to sound really nicely.
We want it to sound inspirational.
Yes.
And it'll be a perfect way to begin the week.
Okay.
All right.
Now, are you confident we can do this now?
nicely we want it to sound inspirational and it'll be a perfect way to begin
the week
okay all right now are you confident we can do this now okay let's get the
opening note from
everybody here it is oh oh i can tell it's going to be good here we go ready
all right
oh we see the right the truth oh
oh
oh
oh
let the games begin
oh now that seemed like it kind of should have been a little peppier well that's
the it was
reverent we have all right one more time a little bit a little bit how much
time do we have do we
yeah that seemed a little that seemed a little dragon well that was reverent
well no we wanted a
little oh one time like that we don't have time anymore we have we have time to
do it quick for
anything now well let's do a commercial well yeah do a commercial i see i it
was all right for a first
right for a first pass but i was just hoping it would be that's the way we do
it in canon i don't know what
you were thinking much more spirited i've heard speed freak kind of version you
heard down here i don't
know that's the way we do it up there no i don't know i just think that if we
had to do it again we'd
well we could do it quicker maybe after they come back from the commercial one
more time i don't
think there's a chance in hell of that but geez i don't know i oh well we'll
talk about this and
we'll be right back folks don't worry about it
i'll tell you what we'll do paul next monday we'll do it again and we'll make
it a little peppier
okay that was the reverent uh sovereign version of it yeah but i i don't know
it wasn't inspirational
as i had hoped we'll do it we'll do a special song and so it deserves to be
done properly
well give me another so you folks can pass those lyric sheets back in no
fights breaking out up there but you know i uh we don't mean any disrespect to
the song or the
country because it's a beautiful song yes but we want to nail it next time we'll
just boom we want
to make the hair stand up on the back of people's neck one more shot at it we'll
see what we can see
well you're the one who was leading for you america well i let it off a little
slow i don't know i uh
but see we wanted it to counteract the sleepy weekend we all had but instead
well we'll do it next
monday okay my first guest tonight is one of our favorites on this program she
is a talented actress
an engrossing conversationalist and one fabulous babe ladies and gentlemen all
the way from hollywood
california please say hello to terry gar
hey very nice to see you
how you doing you look great you look terrific thank you just came in from california
last night
didn't you did you did you hear oh canada by the way yes i did what'd you think
i was very impressed
no it was a little a little slow wasn't it yeah we we went we went like like
lumberjacks and mounties
would be singing it you know a lot of bravado and a lot of bravado bravado i
know what you're
trying to say bravado what did i say bravado yeah bravado a lot of a lot of uh
gust the gusto
you're from canada right yes ma'am oh this is very nice for paul make him feel
at home after all these
years no well that wasn't really my intention but i just think it's such a
great inspirational piece of
music how you doing
you know it was a dream
oh jesus it was terrible we were doing last night's show and the entire
audience stands up and they're
singing oh canada and it goes on and on and on oh god it was horrible it was
just a bad dream
a dream yeah you mean it didn't really happen no no nobody saw it of course not
oh thank god oh thank
god oh it was a dream i think we've startled them i think that's what happened
you know last night we
uh uh we we it was my idea and it didn't work out and it's just one of those
things that you're sorry
it happened and all day long we've been getting complaints from uh paul's
countrymen we were the
the tune oh canada the song the national anthem of canada or one of the
appropriate national anthems
for canada oh canada yes what would be another one uh god save the queen right
another one right
because of course it was at one time uh british uh subject british dominion now
it's its own country
so i am my own person right so so anyway we're gonna sing the song because it's
a beautiful rousing
exciting and it makes you feel good and we were gonna start the week that way
so we did it and it
was lame and it's your fault mostly well because no no the way you started it
off it was like here's
how it would happen you tune in to cbc isn't that the national radio out there
and you hear this
announcement ladies and gentlemen canada has slipped off the continental shelf
and then and then it would
have been followed with this dirge-like version of oh canada to me i thought i
went for an inspiring
oh no it was laying there it was me went a little slow but tonight and also you
left out lyrics to
the song that's not true it is true because the woman who's going to sing it
here tonight i heard her
do a different well i don't know where she got her lyrics from but she we have
a great vocalist
tonight she happens to be an american citizen that's right so now just let me
say if you were watching
last night and you were offended you know more so than normally yeah uh tonight
we're gonna do it
properly and we tried to do it properly last night but we just we just blew it
and when i say we of
one of us yeah one of us but tonight don't don't now don't you admit that it
sounds great tonight
well you spring for a great singer and yeah it's going to sound better i you
know i never claimed to
be a singer so now that's why i'm excited what else am i excited about uh kevin
okay bridgette quickly
tell the folks what you do i'm on the production staff and where you from louisiana
okay and now
you're going to introduce the young girl kirsten and this is the way it's
supposed to be done by
the way for anybody watching last night this is the way oh canada goes uh last
night we ran the
risk of offending an entire country with our very weak offering of a sing-along
of the canadian
national anthem it was paul's fault it was paul's fault uh tonight as a tribute
to our northern
neighbors we welcome a young woman who has sung the song many times often at edmont
telethon isn't it
go right ahead i'll be answering calls here with the definitive rousing rendition
of oh canada
please welcome kirsten ostra
oh canada
oh
oh

oh
oh
oh
oh
oh
oh
oh
oh
that's the little dog
you know that's a great song and you do it very nicely don't you think that's a
beautiful song
now i i now you're not canadian are you kirsten no you live in washington area
but you know
to me if you're canadian and you hear that song sung that way it makes you want
to invade
greenland wouldn't you think that and uh bridget has a question oh how old are
you kirsten and where
are you how old are you bridget and let's see um you like the song huh and is
it easier to
sing than our national anthem yeah yeah you sing it at hockey games don't you
yeah wayne gretzky

Yeah.
O Canada.
Okay.
All right.
Now, are you confident we can do this now?
nicely we want it to sound inspirational and it'll be a perfect way to begin
the week
okay all right now are you confident we can do this now okay let's get the
opening note from
everybody here it is oh oh i can tell it's going to be good here we go ready
all right
oh we see the right the truth oh
oh
oh
oh
let the games begin
oh now that seemed like it kind of should have been a little peppier well that's
the it was
reverent we have all right one more time a little bit a little bit how much
time do we have do we
yeah that seemed a little that seemed a little dragon well that was reverent
well no we wanted a
little oh one time like that we don't have time anymore we have we have time to
do it quick for
anything now well let's do a commercial well yeah do a commercial i see i it
was all right for a first
right for a first pass but i was just hoping it would be that's the way we do
it in canon i don't know what
you were thinking much more spirited i've heard speed freak kind of version you
heard down here i don't
know that's the way we do it up there no i don't know i just think that if we
had to do it again we'd
well we could do it quicker maybe after they come back from the commercial one
more time i don't
think there's a chance in hell of that but geez i don't know i oh well we'll
talk about this and
we'll be right back folks don't worry about it
i'll tell you what we'll do paul next monday we'll do it again and we'll make
it a little peppier
okay that was the reverent uh sovereign version of it yeah but i i don't know
it wasn't inspirational
as i had hoped we'll do it we'll do a special song and so it deserves to be
done properly
well give me another so you folks can pass those lyric sheets back in no
fights breaking out up there but you know i uh we don't mean any disrespect to
the song or the
country because it's a beautiful song yes but we want to nail it next time we'll
just boom we want
to make the hair stand up on the back of people's neck one more shot at it we'll
see what we can see
well you're the one who was leading for you america well i let it off a little
slow i don't know i uh
but see we wanted it to counteract the sleepy weekend we all had but instead
well we'll do it next
