My first guest, this is exciting, joined a band called the Jefferson Airplane
in 1965.
She has been in and out of the band since then and is currently singing with
the latest incarnation of that group, the Jefferson Starship.
Here we're going to see Grace Slick in action, ladies and gentlemen. Take a
look at the monitor.
Thank you. It's out of control. It's out of control.
Please welcome Grace Slick.
We're having a good time now, aren't we?
Yeah, we're having too much fun, maybe. Maybe a little too much fun. You look
good.
Thank you.
Thank you very much for being here.
Let me ask you about the song or the video that we saw and heard there, Out of
Control.
Is this in any way similar to what your life may have been at one time?
May have been.
May have been, yeah.
And still is, friends. It's like that.
Really?
Yes. Paul Kantner wrote that song, but he knows. His life is like that.
The other fellow you saw in the band, Pete Sears, his life is like that. That's
our story.
Out of control, but in a friendly good kind of way, or?
Yeah. Well, you notice when we fall down, we smile.
But now let me ask specifically about you. I can remember hearing stories about
you.
You used to drink pretty good.
No, the point for stopping is that I didn't drink real good. If I drank good, I'd
still be drinking.
Oh, that's right.
Yeah.
Let me rephrase it. You had a reputation for consuming a lot of alcohol.
And not handling it very well.
Yeah.
That's true.
Now, those days are behind you?
Well, that's when I talked to the pre-interview person on the show. They said,
well, the other day, and they were being funny, so-and-so and so-and-so didn't
show up.
And I said, no, I always show up. That's the problem.
Sometimes they'd rather that I never passed out, either.
Yeah.
I wasn't one of those kind that cry and pass out. I can't remember ever passing
out. People were praying that I would pass out.
Down on their knees, when is she going to go home?
Oh.
You know?
So you were a real enthusiastic drinker, I mean...
Yes. There you go.
Yeah.
There you go.
But, but, I have to correct you again, I was the only one who was enthusiastic
about it.
I see. I see. How long a period out of your life did this take?
I would say, um, about 57 years.
No, no, no, no.
Now, you're not, you're not drinking now, are you?
Uh-uh.
Yeah. Um, can you give us an episode or two drinking, drinking-related that, uh,
made you, uh, think it's time to stop this?
No.
It was everybody else's idea.
Yeah.
Not mine.
Uh, is it, is it, is it true that you were once arrested for, uh, drinking and
driving and you weren't even driving?
I've never, I've been arrested for drinking and driving three times and I've
never been in the car.
But they don't have a, a, a number or a thing on their little books for drunk
mouth.
See, it, it's either, you're, it's either assault if you hit or something, that's
assault, or if you're in a car weaving around, then that's drunk driving, but
they don't have a mid-range thing.
And police do not like it when you speak curtly.
Mm-hmm.
Which is putting it mildly.
So somebody else, somebody else was driving and-
No, I was driving, but the car was always stopped and I, once the car was, um,
blowing up because I had forgot to put oil in it and I was going 120.
Mm-hmm.
Isn't that dumb? I mean, you know, that's dumb and drunk.
125 miles an hour. And when you go 125 miles an hour in oil in the car, the
cars blow up. They do that.
So there was smoke coming out of the engine. I mean, the thing was going crazy.
So I pulled it over, parked it, got out of the car and was standing there
watching it.
A Volkswagen went by and said, would you like me to get the highway patrol? I
said, yes, thank you very much.
They went and got the highway patrol. Highway patrol comes back. A large police
officer gets out of the car and says, okay, what's going on here?
And I said, I'm having a goddamn party. What do you mean? There's smoke coming
out of my car. What are you asking me? What's going on? So they take me right
down to the civic center, always.
Yeah, you're done, yeah.
Always. You don't talk. What you do is you cry and say, oh, I'm sorry. I just,
I forgot to put oil in the car and, oh, officer, would you? And I never did
that.
Yeah, yeah. Well, I'm glad you're not doing that anymore because that's not, uh,
that's nothing really we should be making fun about.
I don't know. It isn't. And I think, uh, drunk driving is real stupid. If you
want to get dumb, stay out of a car.
Yeah, yeah. So that's true.
Well, we have many, many other things to talk about with you.
Oh, good.
And we'll, no, no, no, sir.
And we will. We'll be right back with Grace Slick.
Hi, there. Grace Slick is here. Miss Deborah Sue Maffet, current Miss America
will be joining us. Now, tell me about the band now.
Which band? Yours? They're a funny bunch of guys.
Yeah, they're terrific. Terrific folks. Uh, you, uh, your band, uh, are, are
you still having difficulties with police officers?
Do I take these off? Yes, I do.
What do you want to do? Sure, take them off if you like.
Okay. Yeah.
Yeah.
No, I can't see anything, though. That's the problem. Do I, now what?
I asked you a question.
Oh.
Uh, do, do you ever have any trouble with the law now? I mean, uh, how long is
the...
No, no, you'd be surprised how they don't arrest you if you're not drunk.
No, no, no, no, no, I mean...
You can't just walk up to somebody and say, you're coming down to the Civic
Center now, because then you can say, what for? I'm going to call my lawyer,
and what's more, you remember his number and everything.
Yeah, yeah. And you're probably less prone to mouth off under that condition,
right?
That's true. When I, now when I look at police, I go by slowly and don't say
things.
So you're pretty much a law-abiding citizen?
Uh, yeah, yeah, Dave. We're having fun now. We're having fun now, but we won't
if you keep talking along these lines.
As a unit, you and the band, do you guys ever have any close calls with the
authorities? Not you personally?
Well, now, see, what I like about this now is that I'm the one who stands back
and watches other people. We had to leave the state in the middle of the night,
the whole band crew and everything, in funny secret little cars.
And hiding and stuff, because of Paul. So I rather like that. I love it when it's
somebody else's fault.
Now, what was the circumstance there that caused you to steal away in the
middle of the night?
Well, the security guards in the front were doing, this is an old rock and roll
thing that's gone on forever with our band for some reason.
If Paul sees security people beating up on the kids, he leaps off the stage and
says several things to them.
Now, what happened is that, and nobody saw it, I didn't see it, and nobody saw
whether, he has a big guitar,
and those are very thick and very heavy. So if you turn around very quickly,
which he might have done,
he might have come into contact with a police officer with one of those large
guitars.
Now, listen, people are applauding this anarchy.
I said he might have, because I really don't know.
Well, he might have.
He's clever. See, he got arrested before for marijuana, and he says to this day
that it was a camel.
To the band, he says, that was a camel.
Okay.
Yeah, the band wouldn't want to think badly of Paul, probably.
Probably be really disappointed if it was anything other than that.
No, he doesn't fool around. He doesn't even tell the band what he's doing,
which is why our music sounds the way it does.
No, no, no, wait a minute.
Hi, Paul. Hi, Paul. Which camera's Paul on?
Hi, Paul.
You're speaking of Paul Cantner.
Yeah.
Now, which city in which state was this?
Always in Ohio.
In Ohio. Which city in Ohio?
Every time we go to Ohio, well, sometimes Akron, sometimes Toledo.
I mean, it's just Ohio.
Every time we go there, somebody mouths off, and we get sort of kicked out or
put into jail for a variety of reasons.
I don't know why that would be.
Even now that we're old, we still get...
How old are you?
I'm 43.
Really?
Now, how does it... And you brought it up, so you must have feelings about
getting old.
Oh, God, it's terrible.
See, you're supposed to have really good feelings, like you get wise and
everything, and know I'm really enjoying it now.
And I hate it.
I mean, I'd like to sound like I'm well-adjusted, but I'm not.
I don't like the idea... The only thing I like about it is that you do get a
little bit more together in your head.
Yeah.
A little.
But apart from that, everything else falls apart.
Yeah, yeah.
And it keeps falling apart, and it keeps getting worse. It doesn't ever get
better.
Well, you know, I didn't mean to imply that you were, you know, getting old,
but you, in fact, are older than you used to be.
I'm older than you used to be.
I don't know how I do it either.
I'm old... You don't need to say it. I'm older than everybody in this room.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, you're not.
And you seem to be... Oh, well, I don't want to say that either. That would
have been stupid.
Go ahead. Tell me I look real good for my age.
I was going to say, you seem to be... You look great, is what I was going to
say.
That's true, but at least, it's all propped up. They pull pins back here after
the performance of...
Not true.
We'll be back with Grace Slick after station identification.
Hey, thank you, Paul.
Grace Slick is here tomorrow night on this program.
Comedian Jimmy Alec will be joining us also.
Author Jan Harold Brunvand and actor-musician Lee Von Helm will be here
tomorrow.
How come you read that from the bottom up?
Because I wanted to save Lee Von Helm's name to last.
Oh, okay.
Because he was supposed to be here last week and he didn't arrive.
Then how come he has it written from the top down?
I don't know. What did it say, Kevin? Let me see that.
Actor-musician Lee Von Helm... Oh, that's right. I inverted the... simply
inverted the order.
It doesn't matter. Why did I...
In case of a tie, the blue card is always correct.
What was I... I was going to ask you about your daughter. Tell me about your
daughter.
You have a daughter.
No.
You have a daughter. You have a young girl named... what's her name?
China.
China.
Yeah.
Now, was that originally her name?
Yes. People heard about the God story, which wasn't true. I was playing around
with a nurse.
Oh, I see. What was the... Oh, you're going to tell us.
Yeah, I'm going to tell you because that's fairly good.
It's better than discussing your cue cards, I'll tell you.
No, that's true.
Okay.
Came in with a little diploma and it had a little gold star on it.
She said, now we give all these to the ladies who have the babies.
And we put the name on here. And what is the baby's name?
And I said, God, and you smell it with a small g because we want to be humble.
And, you know, so I thought I was just playing with her, but she went out and
got on the phone
to Herb Cain. And Herb Cain's a columnist in San Francisco and he put... So
everybody thought
her name was God, which it isn't.
Oh.
It's just China.
It's China. Now, now, there must be an equally interesting story behind her
actual name.
Not really, really, but I'll tell you it anyway.
Okay.
Okay. There's a lot of Oriental people in San Francisco and it's sort of a
gratitude thing
because we learned a lot. I mean, sometimes I think I wouldn't be here for a
lot of reasons
because of the people helping in a variety of ways.
Brains, body, acupuncture, attitude and stuff. So it's just an honor.
So in honor to the Chinese population of San Francisco.
Now, how old is China now?
She's 12.
12. And how does she react as almost an adolescent being known as China?
She's not crazy about it.
Yeah.
She'd rather be Jennifer or, you know, something like that.
Yeah.
Because I think all kids, so even if your name is John, you probably want to be
Sam or Fred
or something.
Yeah.
You know, when you're an adolescent, you don't like your name because it's not
very interesting.
Yeah.
And you've always had it and it's boring or it's stupid. I mean, China, it's
better than
Thorndike.
Tell me about your, how do you feel about country music?
Why do you bring things like that up?
I'd rather talk about sex and drugs.
All right.
Well, we'll get to that next.
Do you like it?
Are you a fan of it, a supporter of country music?
A couple of people, yeah, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.
And beyond that, I can't really get too warm.
Yeah.
Because I don't understand constant sad lyrics about my baby, why don't you
come back and
crawling on the floor after my man.
But it's getting good.
It's not quite like that anymore.
So, you know, there are some that are excellent.
Yeah.
You see, I've noticed, and I sort of enjoy it, but I've noticed that if you
listen to it
for any length of time, a lot of titles are play on word kind of titles.
I can't think of any now, so this won't mean anything, but do you know what I'm
saying?
No.
Yeah.
Not yet.
No.
I'll come up with one before the end of the show.
Okay.
And it'll be well worth waiting for, I'm sure.
So, where were we?
Oh, now, anyway, so your daughter would rather be somebody else, and you...
No, just have another name.
Just have another name.
Now, there was a period of time also when you were, in addition to drinking to
excess, you
were shopping a lot, weren't you?
You just go crazy and shop, right?
I'm not real good at middle range, anything.
It's either a whole lot of it or nothing, because the middle doesn't really
interest me
too much, so that's the main problem.
For example, when you would go shopping, you would do what?
Go shopping.
Well, you go shopping, not in San Francisco, because there isn't too many
interesting things
there at the moment, so you go to Los Angeles, so...
No interest in clothing in San Francisco?
Well, not as much as New York and Los Angeles, so what happens is I go to Los
Angeles for maybe
three days and run through 15 stores a day, and then the accountant or the bank
thought
that somebody was signing my name to a lot of checks, and so they canceled all
this stuff,
and I said no, that was me signing my name to a lot of checks.
Well, but what kind of stuff?
Just your basic stuff, Dave, clothes, parsnips.
But would you run up like an enormous bill?
What are we talking about in terms of money?
No, it's not enormous so much as it was just the matter of how many in a short
period of
time, and the bank went nuts and canceled it all.
So, I get in trouble for that in a number of areas.
Yeah.
Now, do you wear all of this stuff, or do you just leave it in the closet?
No, some of it I eat.
And another excessive note, my husband got me, he knew that I liked this
certain kind
of cake, he got me the whole cake for Christmas, and within a half an hour, I
had eaten three
forces, about this big, and was sick to my stomach, but I knew that was going
to happen.
In other words, but I do it anyway.
Yeah, yeah.
See, people like me usually get treatment, but I get paid for being this way.
But good for you.
Yeah.
So does he.
Now, that's the real crime here, America.
Wait a minute, let me, the name of the new album, what's the name of the new
album?
Wins of Change.
Wins of Change.
Glad I remembered that.
Come back and see us any time you're in the vicinity.
Does that mean you want me to leave?
No, no, you don't have to leave, we're just, we have to go away again.
Oh, okay.
But you are done for, we have Miss America waiting.
Oh, okay.
But you don't have to leave.
Now I can understand.
No, no, no.
Grace Slick, ladies and gentlemen.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.

And I said, God, and you smell it with a small g because we want to be humble.

actual name.
Yeah.
And you've always had it and it's boring
