People like this bagel lady into instant celebrities.
I'll take you on a walking tour of Mr. Dave's Neighborhood.
And there I am.
But do you recognize the other guy?
Well, he is just one of the people who's reaping the benefits of being David
Letterman's neighbor.
And you'll get to meet the whole gang.
Coming up.
And you're getting calls from everywhere.
Oh, sure.
Coming up next tonight, why David Letterman's neighbors love him.
This is Rupert.
Why is he getting a standing ovation?
Because he's part of Dave's Neighborhood.
We'll take you to the Grand Tour.
Plus her skate.
Closed captioning on Channel 2 News.
Underwritten by the American Express card.
They are unlikely celebrities.
The shopkeepers, deli workers, and souvenir hawkers who work not too far from
here at the Ed Sullivan Theater all around that area.
That's right.
And so why are they suddenly in the spotlight?
Because David Letterman put them there.
Tonight, you'll get to meet firsthand the people in Mr. Dave's Neighborhood.
With David Letterman.
They've become the late show regulars.
Bart, the tuxedo shop guy.
Alex, the bagel lady.
Mujibar and Surajul, the ID and t-shirt guys.
Fern, the Xerox lady.
And of course, Rupert, the deli guy.
They're the neighbors in Dave's late night world.
Nate famous in Letterman's Meet the Neighbor segments.
Time to play.
Let's meet the neighbors.
But have their 15 minutes of fame changed their worlds much?
All right, and this is Rupert.
Rupert, you're famous too now.
Thanks.
Everybody coming in and saying, where's Rupert?
Hi, Rupert.
How are you?
Yeah, pictures and autographs.
No kidding.
Yeah, the whole works.
Others have landed on the pages of people.
And business is booming for everyone on Broadway between 53rd and 54th.
Now it's time to meet the neighbors who met Dave.
Alex Mitskus was immortalized when she personally delivered several dozen bagels
from the bagel cafe.
You're really something, aren't you?
Are you getting any cards and letters from around the country?
No, they come in, though, from around the country, which is pretty amazing.
So in town, we had to hit the block.
Of course, we couldn't get standby tickets, so we said, let's go at least visit
the neighbors.
Come on in right now.
Bart is here.
I'm surprised you don't have on that sequin jacket.
Well, I don't wear it every day, but I'll put it on right now.
Here, put it on for us right now.
At Letterman's request, Bart de Don was last seen heading off in a sequin coat
with tails into the subway.
I'll tell you what, I'll give you $100 if you get in the subway like that.
Come on.
Take off, head for the subway.
Will you watch this door?
There he goes!
Next door, Rock America has become the unofficial Letterman souvenir stand,
a development that hasn't been missed by the Letterman folks.
Yes, and we're going to be shutting them down in a couple of weeks.
We had hoped to find Dave's two most well-known neighbors at Rock America,
but Mujibar and Sirajul were on vacation.
You want to see the two guys that were on television?
They're not here today.
They're not?
No, they're not here today.
Where are they?
They're on vacation or something.
Is that right?
Oh, wow.
But see, they have their own T-shirt now.
Look at that.
That's them.
They've got their own T-shirt.
Would you buy that?
Not today.
Not today?
Out on the Letterman ticket line, we found everyone has their favorite neighbor.
Do you have a favorite neighbor?
Oh, no.
No, yeah, Rupert.
Rupert?
Yeah, Rupert's getting all the votes here today, I think.
Yes, great hot chocolate.
Great hot chocolate.
Yeah.
Let's hear it for Rupert.
Yay!
Dave seems to like Rupert, too.
He's been in for coffee and led the audience in a standing ovation for him.
So, has all this neighborly behavior led to a bunch of good friends
or ended in a giant neighborhood monster?
We asked Letterman head writer Rob Burnett.
Well, I've heard Mujibar and Sirajul just got a show on Fox,
so that's worried me a little bit.
No, everyone seems real friendly.
They're nice.
I'm sure, you know, this has had to be good for business for them,
so I think they're happy, we're happy.
Everyone's happy.
Everyone is happy, that's for sure.
So, when will Dave be out meeting and greeting the neighbors again?
Well, just about any time they run short on other materials, says Rob Burnett,
but you might look for the next installment as early as this Friday.
Oh, can't wait.
That was so much fun to do, though.
Did you get one of those T-shirts yourself?
No, not today.
Not today.
Coming right up.
Did Nancy Kerrigan diss Mickey Mouse at Disney World?
Well, you get a chance to hear what she said, and then you decide.
