You know what we're going to do tonight, which I think would be great fun.
This is the epitome of New York City.
This is the kind of thing you do if you're a tourist,
and very often those of us who live in the area don't take an opportunity like
this.
So tonight we're going to do that.
We're going to take you to the top of the World Trade Tower downtown at the
World Trade Center.
It's the tallest, as you know, the tallest building in New York,
and the second tallest building in the world.
Hal, do we have the pictures ready to go down there?
All right, here's what it looks like.
Pretty spectacular.
The tallest building in the world, Paul, is what?
Do you have any idea what that is?
It's the CN Tower in Toronto.
No.
Sears Tower in Chicago.
Oh, the Sears Tower in Chicago.
That's what I meant.
Yeah, but I think yours is...
The observation deck on this building is a quarter of a mile high,
and it's above the 110th floor.
The altitude is 1,377 feet.
Paul, how about a little observation tower music there?
One and a half million people visit this annually.
Wait a minute.
That man looked terribly despondent.
Sir!
Sir, are you all right, sir?
Is everything okay at home?
Oh, my God.
Ladies and gentlemen, Henry Fonda.
You can get up there by one of two express elevators.
Travel time from the mezzanine to the 107th floor is under one minute.
Look at these.
Aren't these unbelievable pictures today, Paul?
Very nice.
Now, this is...
Is this the Brooklyn Bridge?
Yeah.
That's the Brooklyn Bridge right there.
This is the East River, and this would be then the Manhattan Bridge.
And then there, I think we're looking at the Mookie Wilson Bridge.
Working our way up the East River.
They say you can see at least seven bridges from this.
And...
Oh, what bridge is...
Oh, that's the 59th Street Bridge?
Yeah.
Guy cheering the 59th Street Bridge.
And there is...
Is that the Triborough?
Triborough is a tough bridge.
Did you ever have any luck on the Triborough, Paul?
Me neither.
Me neither.
See if in the distance, Hal, we can show them where I live.
Way up there in...
Off into Connecticut there someplace.
Oh, yeah.
Just sort of there to...
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
And, oh, let's see if we can actually show...
Oh, what's that in the distance?
Is that the Whitestone?
Whitestone.
Whitestone Bridge.
All right.
Not as popular as the 59th Street Bridge, but nonetheless, it gets the job done.
Hal, let's take a look at the RCA building from where we are.
And we can actually see up into Midtown and beyond.
This is just amazing.
A lot of tourists having their pockets picked.
How do you do?
Nice to see you.
Well, that's a pretty good crowd for this time of night, isn't there?
Hello.
Hi.
What's your name, ma'am?
Excuse me, ma'am.
Excuse me.
Can you hear me?
Do you speak English?
We have tourists from all over the world come up there.
All right.
Let's go back and look at the RCA building.
Okay.
Hey, wait a minute.
That guy had a rifle.
Hey, pal.
Hold it.
All right.
All right.
We're going to show you where the broadcast is originating.
And in the distance over there, I guess we're looking at New Jersey.
Smattering of applause for New Jersey.
Oh, look at that.
Now, there's the Hudson River on the left, wending its way up.
Now, can we get in there, Hal, on the RCA building?
Okay.
I think we have the Empire State building here.
No, that's the Merv Griffin building.
I'm sorry.
Now, this thing with the little round satellite deal on the top of the roof
there, that's the RCA building.
And our own Larry Bud Melman is on the 68th floor, and he's actually waving a
towel.
He has a towel hanging out the window.
Which one is it, Hal?
Can we see that?
In the very...
Oh, yeah.
In the very...
Yeah, that little circle made all the difference in the world, didn't it?
The Empire State building?
Okay, so we'll be going up there from time to time during the course of the
evening,
visiting with folks from all over the world.
But we couldn't have picked a better day for it.
Thanks, Paul.
Pretty neat.
Hal, let's take a look at that again.
That was pretty picturesque.
We had a gathering of sailboats, and in the distance there you see the statue
of Rocky,
donated by Sylvester Stallone.
Wow, that's nice.
Yeah, pretty good.
And then what actually are we looking at?
What body of water do we call this at...
The Bay.
The Bay.
Thanks, Hal.
And then the Statue of Liberty, and then on about into there.
Is that the Atlantic we're looking at eventually?
The Narrows.
Where is the Atlantic from there?
The Wall.
Right there, right out there.
Yeah, someone said west in the audience.
Coney Island?
Oh, can we see airports from here, Hal?
Airports are way around those.
Oh, okay.
I'm disoriented.
All right.
Tomorrow on the program, ladies and gentlemen.
Yeah.
Oh, my gosh, look at there.
You can actually see Indiana from here.
Tomorrow on the program, Crowded House will be here.
Howard Stern will be here.
And three...
Will, you're going to be here tomorrow.
Yeah, you can be here tomorrow.
The band thinks tonight's it.
And three-year-old genius Benji Hardy will be here.
Three-year-old genius Benji Hardy will be here tomorrow.
That's where we draw the line.
If you're older than three, you can't be on the show.
But if you're a three-year-old genius, we'd like to have you.
It's like the Kentucky Derby.
You can draw the line at two and go on the Kentucky Derby.
Two, yeah, that's right.
Is it two-year-olds or three-year-olds in the Kentucky Derby?
Three-year-olds.
That's what I meant.
Thank you very much.
Well, you know, oddly enough, this is the only three-year-old genius to ever
have run in the Kentucky Derby.
That's why we thought we'd have him on the show.
I see.
Oh, shut up, will you?
And also, we have a suit of marshmallows.
This is a big, cumbersome device, and I'll be covered with marshmallows and
then set a fire.
That'll be tomorrow.
Yeah.
Thanks, Will.
I'm glad you liked it.
All right, let's go back up there, Hal.
Let's see if we can't visit with some of the folks who are spending the evening
on the observation tower of the World Trade Center.
There they are right there.
How do you do, ma'am?
Can you hear me?
Hello.
Hi.
Hi.
Hi, what is your name?
Jennifer.
Jennifer, where are you from?
From where?
Kansas.
Kansas.
What city in Kansas?
Beloit.
I can't hear what she's saying.
Beloit.
Beloit, Kansas?
And you're in town looking for your little dog, aren't you?
How old are you, Jennifer?
Thirteen.
Thirteen.
So this must be pretty exciting for you, huh?
Uh-huh.
Have you ever been to New York before?
No.
Yeah.
How long have you been in town?
About four days.
Really?
And what other things have you seen besides the World Trade Center here?
Subways and the water.
Ooh.
Ooh, subways.
Did you see anybody get killed?
And so this will be your trip, I guess, before you have to go back to school,
huh?
Yeah.
Yeah.
What grade are you in back in Kansas?
Eighth.
Eighth grade?
Have you ever seen it?
My name is Dave Letterman, by the way, Jennifer.
Have you ever seen this show?
No.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, nice to see you anyway, and I hope you have a good trip.
Okay.
Okay, do you think maybe you'll watch from now on?
Yeah.
She had to think it over.
She had to think it over.
How do you do, ma'am?
What is your name, please?
Yeah.
I'm not even there, and I'm getting snubbed.
Excuse me, sir, are you in the Hutt shirt?
Pardon me, sir.
Yes, sir.
Hi, how are you?
How are you doing?
What is your name, please?
Jeff Oaks.
Jeff, my name is Dave Letterman.
Where are you from?
Santa Clara University.
What did he say?
Santa Clara.
Santa Clara, Northern California.
Yes, sir.
What are you studying there?
Political science.
I see, and what year?
I'll be a senior.
Uh-huh.
And what brings you to New York today?
Just on vacation for 10 days.
Yeah, and having a good time?
So far.
Yeah.
What else have you done besides come up to the top of the World Trade Center?
I saw the subways with the other girl.
Did a travel agent put this package together?
Oh, no.
You get to see the subway and the tower.
You get to see the high and the low of it, and that's it.
Back on the bus.
Well, nice to see you here.
What is the Hutt, by the way?
It's a bar where I work at.
Uh-huh.
Well, that's good.
Have a good year back there at Santa Clara.
All right.
Thanks, Dave.
Nice visiting with you.
Can we...
Hi.
Is it...
Do we have anybody from a different country up there?
Excuse me, ma'am?
Ladies and gentlemen, it's Yoko Ono.
I think we've pushed our luck one too many times.
What are we doing?
We'll do a commercial.
If we can find someone from a different land up there, perhaps we'll come back
and chat with them.
We'll take a break and chat with them all about it.
I understand we have a couple from Germany on the roof of the building.
Let's meet those folks.
How do you do?
Wie geht es Ihnen?
Hi.
Uh, wo wohnen Sie?
Shall we answer in English or in German?
Hi.
Hi.
Where are you guys from?
We are coming from Germany, West Germany, from Cologne.
From Cologne.
Nice to have you in this country.
Uh, may I see your papers, please?
Oh.
How long have you been in New York City?
I'm, uh, here, uh, since eight weeks now.
How many weeks?
Eight weeks?
You having a good time?
Yeah.
You have any tall buildings like this in, uh, Germany?
This, uh, what did you say?
I didn't understand.
Big buildings in Germany?
Yes, but not, uh, that big that, uh, the, the World Trade Center.
Yeah.
Are you spending a lot of time photographing military installations while you're
here?
No, probably not.
Thank you very much.
Nice to visit with you.
Good night, everybody.
