Okay, here it is. It's the, um...
This is the Phil is the caller there, Donahue, countdown calendar.
Phil is bringing his show into New York in a couple of months, and we started
this, geez, seems like April when we started it.
We don't even know why we keep doing it. We know we're annoying, Phil. We're
sorry for that.
We can't stop. It's taken on a life of its own. So here we are. Let's take off
Wednesday now, and we'll not only reveal another part of Phil's head, there,
but of course...
Under each one of these calendar days, we have a fun fact about Phil Donahue.
Paul, are you ready for the fun fact today?
Let's hear it. Okay, question. How long was the Donahue show on the air before
Phil showed film of the birth of a baby?
How long had it been on the air?
They didn't have to be on too long before Phil got to that film of the birth of
a baby.
How long was it?
Nine months, I guess.
You hear the Donahue stays in your air.
No, it wasn't. That was good, though. That's a good answer.
It was three days. Three days they showed the birth of a...
And Phil will be here in the studio... When does it begin? December sometime?
Comes in in December, so we can hardly wait.
And, you know, feel free to make your own countdown calendars.
You know, Paul will back me up on this.
I don't get involved in a lot of controversial issues or a lot of, oh, you know,
I don't have my own golf tournament, for example.
I'm just... I'm not a very active person, but I tell you, every now and then,
something comes to my attention that really gets me hot.
Now, we came across an item in the paper not too long ago.
A little clipping there, an AP wire item.
Town is planning second TV turnoff.
Farmington, Connecticut, September 26th.
The Farmington Library Council, which sponsored a TV turnoff last January,
decided this month to proceed with a second effort next January.
Quote, we're really not hoping for a media event this time, although that
helped in some ways.
The last time, said Nancy DeSalvo, the children's librarian who proposed the
activity.
We're aiming at educating parents to realize why they should turn it off.
It, of course, being the miracle of television.
Library officials estimated that 1,000 people watching television during the
first campaign turned off their sets.
Ladies and gentlemen, 1,000 human beings, many of them children,
took one month of their lives and threw it away.
This woman has got to be stopped.
Her name is Nancy DeSalvo.
She's the Farmington Children's Librarian.
We're going to give her a call and try to help her out of this.
We're calling the library in Farmington, Connecticut.
Oh, I hope I've dialed correctly.
You know, I think I left out three numbers.
Let me try it one more time, just to be certain.
There's that.
There's the area code.
There's this.
Okay, that should be it.
The Farmington Library, Farmington, Connecticut.
Going to talk about the proposed TV turnoff.
See if we can't talk some sense into this woman.
Oh, this cold.
Boy, did I mention I have a terrible, terrible cold?
Farmington Library, man.
Yes, is this the Farmington Library in Farmington, Connecticut?
Yes, it is.
Hi, I'm David Letterman.
I'm phoning from New York City.
How are you today?
I'm good.
How are you?
Oh, just fine.
Thank you.
Listen, I wonder if you could connect me with the children's librarian, Nancy
DeSalvo, please.
Sure.
Okay.
Thank you.
Very pleasant-sounding woman, don't you think, Paul?
So far.
So far, yeah.
Very nice.
Okay.
We'll get Nancy DeSalvo here and see if we can't reason with her.
Call this nonsense off.
No, this off.
It's Nancy DeSalvo.
Yes.
Is this Nancy DeSalvo?
Yes.
Hi, Nancy.
My name is David Letterman.
I'm calling from New York City.
How are you today?
I'm fine.
How are you?
Oh, good.
Nancy, before we begin, I have a question here.
I was reading an item in the paper not too long ago, and it's an article about
you planning
a TV boycott, sort of, in January.
That's right.
Now, before we continue the conversation now, were you misquoted here?
No.
No, no, no.
We had one last January, and we're going to have another one this January.
It was so successful.
So, what you're trying to do is encourage people not to watch television.
That's right.
Nancy, I personally, along with hundreds and hundreds of other people here at
NBC, we make
our living in television, and I'm calling tonight to see if I can't get you to
reconsider.
Now, before you say anything, Nancy, this was last January.
You had folks turn off their TVs, right?
That's right.
And you think you accomplished a lot of good, I'm sure.
Yes, I'm sure we did.
Well, Nancy, maybe you don't know what you folks missed last January.
A lousy Super Bowl game?
No, no, we're not talking about the Super Bowl game.
I'm talking about the two-hour debut episode of Riptide.
And, Nancy, you know, once a kid misses that all-important first episode, he's
lost for the rest of the season.
That's right.
But I don't think that anybody misses anything if they miss the first episode.
Oh.
All right, all right, Nancy, just a minute.
We're not finished here.
They also missed the premiere of foul-ups, bleeps, and blunders.
But that's not all.
They also missed the premiere of TVs, bloopers, and practical jokes.
But this goes on all the time on television, so what did they miss?
It's all bleepers and bloops and everything all...
Yes, Nancy, but it's the fun of being part of that first-night excitement.
All right, now, Nancy, let me ask you another question.
Do you watch our television program?
No, I don't.
No, I'm not up that late.
Yeah, I know.
All right, all right.
Now, Nancy, I want to argue my case here for having you reconsider this.
Now, if you go ahead with this silly little boycott nonsense,
in January, you're going to miss some wonderful features on this program.
Now, let me tell you what you're going to miss in the upcoming month of January.
For example, our first special feature will be something called
Children's Librarians, Guardians of Tomorrow.
Come on, Nancy.
The next one we have planned, Nancy, is a special called Farmington, Town of
Destiny.
That's right.
We are Town of Destiny.
Everybody from all over the world came to our doors last year.
And, well, we have one more here.
This one's called From Mrs. Reagan to Mrs. Sluggo, Nancy's in American Culture.
We have room for one more Nancy in this lineup.
Is there any way I can get you to change your mind on this?
Well, I don't think so, because I'm not the only one involved, and it's so good
to do this.
It's out of your hands, is what you're saying.
That's right.
Nancy, we're both adults.
Nancy, we're both adults.
I'll tell you what.
You know, if you play along with us here and call off this little boycott deal,
there's a pretty good chance you might find yourself with a lovely gift.
Bill, what do we have for us?
It's a brand-new color TV day.
Oh, my God.
Yes, it's a 20-sips and Sony Trimetron with color pure filter,
10-key express, commander tuning system, and velocity modulation scanning,
all in a genuine, dark-stained, debony finish.
And remember, Nancy, this can all be yours if you just play along.
Dave?
Okay, Nancy, I don't know if you got to hear Bill, but it's a lovely color
television set.
Now, wouldn't that look nice in your family room?
You turn on the television set, and it says, read a book.
And it says, read a book?
Yes, right.
Yeah.
I get the feeling that you're not going to call this off.
No, I don't think so.
It's bigger than both of us.
All right.
Now, Nancy, you'll admit that we've at least opened an important line of
communication here.
That's right.
And will you at least give me the honor of continuing this communication right
up until the last possible minute?
Oh, sure.
Sure.
There's always a chance, you know.
Oh, there is a chance.
Yes, there's always a chance.
God bless you, Nancy.
Thank you very much.
Have a nice evening.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
Bye.
Color TV, what happened?
Now, who gets the color TV?
Well, that'll be a separate negotiation.
All right.
We'll be back.
Oh, the man who invented all of these wonderful special effects, Tom Savini.
So, come on back, folks.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Two weeks ago, we phoned this woman in Farmington, Connecticut.
Her name is Nancy DiSalvo.
We saw this ad in the newspaper.
Town is planning second TV turnoff.
Now, keep in mind that this is how we make our living through TV.
The Farmington Library Council, which sponsored a TV turnoff last January,
decided this month to proceed with a second effort next January, said Nancy DiSalvo,
the children's librarian.
We are aiming at educating parents to realize why they should turn off their
televisions.
Library officials estimated that 1,000 people stopped watching television
altogether during last January.
Ladies and gentlemen, to me, 1,000 people took one month of their lives and
threw it away.
We talked to this woman last week to try and get her to change her mind and
call off this little, oh, media stunt.
And she said that she couldn't do it.
Well, we thought we'd call her back tonight and see if we can't once again get
her to reconsider.
So, we're calling Nancy DiSalvo in Farmington.
I think she wants people to do more reading instead of watching TV.
I believe that's the premise here.
So, we'll just call Nancy DiSalvo.
We phoned her last week on October 3rd, and she wouldn't call this off.
But she did say that we could leave the lines of communication open.
So, this is the first ring there in Farmington, Connecticut.
And waiting now for children's librarian Nancy DiSalvo to answer the phone.
Hello?
Hello, is Nancy DiSalvo there?
This is she.
Nancy, this is Dave Letterman again.
How are you?
Hi, how are you?
Fine.
Nice to talk with you.
How's the weather there in Farmington?
Oh, it's warm.
Yeah.
It's warm.
Yeah, it's a little.
It's unusually warm here in New York City also.
Now, Nancy, the last time we spoke to you about a week ago, you hadn't seen
this particular television show.
Have you had a chance to take a look at it since we talked to you?
Yeah, I looked at it last Wednesday night.
And what did you think, Nancy?
Well, I thought you were very funny.
So, in other words, you're calling off the boycott?
Well, as a matter of fact, we have a countdown now.
We've got 84 more days, and we thought it'd be really nice if you joined us.
Oh, Nancy.
Nancy, you don't know what you're saying, Nancy.
I mean, you could give up television for the month of January, and give up your
show for the month of January, and just think how great that would be.
Nancy, I'd sooner cut out my heart.
Nancy, I'll tell you the reason I'm calling.
Ever since we spoke last week, I'm haunted by this recurring nightmare, and I'll
tell you what it is.
It's a cold Sunday night in January.
All across the country, millions of happy families, moms and dads and little
kids, are gathered around their TVs watching the adventures of Punky Brewster
right here on NBC.
Everywhere, that is, except in Farmington.
Well, it's not only Farmington this year.
It's going to be other towns.
We're trying to get other towns to turn it off.
Isn't that neat?
Nancy, here's what I see in my dream.
Little children sitting by darkened television sets.
And, Nancy, do you know what they're doing?
Maybe their mothers are reading to them.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's what they're doing.
Maybe their mothers are reading to them.
Or maybe they're using their minds.
But isn't that a sickening notion, Nancy?
That's fine.
That's really great.
Okay, Nancy, now, I'm disturbed to hear that this nonsense is spreading.
But, now, since we last spoke with you, we've been filling in our upcoming
January programming schedule.
And, again, I'd like you to reconsider some of the things that you and the
folks may be missing.
We're planning a couple of segments I think you'll find interesting.
One is called Better Yet Connecticut, a look at the nutmeg state.
Another one they're working on is called Check Me Out,
The Story of Librarians After Dark.
And, finally, a little musical thing we've got in the works.
It's delightful.
It's de lovely.
It's de salvo.
Now, Nancy, the last time we spoke, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there
some discussion of a little gift for you if you called this off?
You know, what I really would like you to do is offer me a car, because I want
to really feel for this.
It feels like to turn it down.
Oh.
It must be a tremendous sensation.
What did we offer you last time?
Offer me a TV, which is rather stupid.
Yes, that's right.
Nancy, it was a lovely 26-inch Sony TV, and, oh, yeah, there's a picture of it
right there.
And, you know, that's not just a TV, Nancy.
That had 10-key express command tuning.
Really?
What do you think?
Will you take the TV and forget all of this nonsense?
Well, no, I don't think so.
All right, Nancy, you seem to me like a pretty smart person.
I tell you what.
I am smart.
I know.
I tell you what we're going to do.
We're going to up the ante a little bit.
Bill, what else do we have for Nancy tonight?
This is up.
In addition to the 26-inch Sony TV, Dave, it's a year's supply of Hawaiian Tropic
tanning oil.
Developed in the vacation paradise Honolulu, each bottle contains a rich blend
of natural oils
and protection factor number two.
It's a tanning oil.
It's a sunscreen.
It's Hawaiian Tropic.
Dave?
Oh, my.
Whoo.
That's amazing, Nancy.
You're getting some suntan oil, but, gee, Bill, why would Nancy be needing any
suntan oil?
Because, Dave, Nancy will need protection from the sun when she dries out these
new water skis.
Strap yourself into a Coast Guard-approved O'Brien water ski, Nancy, and it's
fun-ahoy all summer long.
Dave?
Nancy, I don't know if you could hear Bill Wendell, but he said that it's fun-ahoy
all summer long on those water skis.
So, uh, what do you think?
Is that enough to call this thing off?
Are you giving me water skis?
Water skis?
The TV?
The tanning lotion?
Oh, my goodness.
You know what I'm going to do?
I'm going to send you one of our bumper stickers where it says-
Now, wait a minute.
I tell you what, Nancy, before you make up your mind, I think maybe we have a
little something else.
Don't we, Bill?
Oh, do we ever, Dave.
Nancy, you'll make a smooth transition from surf to turf on this.
A snapper riding mower, constructed out of heavy gauge steel, the 25-inch snapper
comes equipped with a six-horsepower engine and patented high vacuum-cutting
chamber.
Total retail value of Nancy DeSalvo's prize wonderland, $2,850.
If you just play along!
Okay.
All right, uh, Nancy, did you hear that?
It's a lovely riding mower.
A riding mower?
A riding mower, Nancy.
We'll give you the skis, the suntan oil, the color TV, a retail value almost $3,000.
A lawn mower?
What?
A lawn mower?
It's a riding mower.
Well, I don't like lawn mowers.
You don't like lawn mowers?
No.
Nancy, don't be a chump.
Take the prize wonderland.
No, I think you can do better than that.
Okay, Nancy, I'll give you one more chance.
This is it.
You don't want the prize wonderland?
No.
Okay, Nancy, you're a tough nut to crack.
I know it.
You're going to regret this.
Now, do you have kids?
I have kids.
Oh, they'd love that lawn mower.
They'd love those water skis, the TV.
No, they don't like it.
They don't like lawn mowers.
They don't?
No.
Well, it's like a car.
You know, you were talking about a car.
No.
Well, where's the car?
Where's the what?
Where's the car?
Well, we'll see what we can do.
All right, Nancy.
We'll talk to you later.
All right.
I can't...
I'm really hurt.
You really are?
Oh, you should go off television with us.
Your children have a project instead of trying to...
Nancy, Nancy, you're taking food out of my mouth.
You're taking food out of the mouths of my children.
You have children?
Well, you know, if I had them, they'd be eaten real well.
I'm going to be here.
All right.
I have to go, Nancy.
We've got a stuntman who's going to plunge a couple of thousand feet here.
Oh, good.
All right.
Nice talking with you.
All right.
All right.
Bye.
Bye.
Bye.
I can't...
Ladies and gentlemen, here now is a word from Pillsbury, where, as you know,
fresh ideas
are baking.

And, finally, a little musical thing
