our next guest tonight played two of the best-known lawmen ever to appear on
television
from 1957 through 1966 he never once lost a case as perry mason and from 1967
through 1975 he was
chief robert ironside on december 1st now he will be seen in a movie on this
very network called
perry mason returns please welcome raymond burr how are you doing pretty good
you not too bad thanks
for being here so perry mason is coming back huh perry mason is coming back for
a two-hour special
yeah did you ever think uh anywhere between now and then that you would do it
again i always wanted
to do a two-hour show um i tried to get them to do one for the nine years we
were on with no luck
obviously yeah uh but uh mr gardner's stories were so involved that we really
never did one fully the
ones from the books so it was kind of nice to uh be able to do one that's full
and are we to believe
that he's been practicing law all of these years we are to believe that he has
graduated to becoming
a judge oh he's now a judge yeah when the picture opens yeah and who of the uh
of the original cast
will be in this just barbara and myself barbara was uh was della street barbara
hale was della street
yeah now what was the deal with uh uh you and barbara there was there a uh was
uh you know what i mean was
there a little uh you know any out of court settlements uh if you had seen if
we had done a show on a daily
basis yeah you probably would have seen a good deal more uh-huh and uh and uh
uh let me ask you about
your island you you at one time owned an island in the in the fiji's and the fiji
islands yes one of
the fiji islands we sold it last year how big an island was this big enough
about 4 000 acres
4 000 acres how many square miles is that is that a oh good i'm not going to
get trapped in tony randall's
but it uh it was uh a substantial piece of property if it's 4 000 acres and it's
in the middle of the
ocean and there's nothing else around it it's substantial yeah yeah now how how
did you go about
buying it in the first place and why uh i wanted to be a farmer and
particularly in the tropics
bought some beautiful property in hawaii and then three nice large hotels built
right around us
so we finally moved to fiji and found uh i had uh become acquainted with let's
see a palm tree and a
beach is about the same anywhere yeah it depends who the inhabitants are and
the fijian people are
fantastic people were there folks living on your island i guess well they yes
we had a plantation
there was a going plantation a coconut plantation on the island we brought in
some um cattle uh purebred
cattle uh imported from the united states from uh the king ranch and and how
how much time would you
actually spend there not enough that's the reason we sold oh is that right yeah
so it wasn't a case of
you spending a lot of time there and just going stir crazy no no i went stir
crazy during perry mason and
iron side but uh because you were tied down to the studio uh how long would it
take you to get to
to this island what was the name of it night tomba i took you now did you make
that up
no but if you don't like the name i'll make up what i just know what what does
night tomba mean no one
knows but it means uh welcome in some dialects yeah it means uh beautiful a
discovery and other other
parts of the dialect there are 24 major dialects in fiji uh so we tried to find
the name of the island
of the island and its origin but we couldn't is this anywhere near johnson
island
no johnson island is about six hours by jet
i don't know i don't know i know that it's i know that it i know it's also a
very remote island i
didn't know the fiji islands are 380 islands 110 of them inhabited they're the
geographical and
political center of the south pacific they're surrounded uh to the east by
uh tonga samoa um to the south by australia and new zealand and then tahiti and
easter island is
further east hapu nagini the solomons and new caledonia to the west and you
keep going so johnson's
nowhere near there nowhere kidding um uh what were you talking about oh and and
the did the people like
you did they was it uh beneficial for them to have you own this island i yes i
guess yeah um i guess they
like me yeah uh we had 17 of them come to school in the united states and they're
all back there but
one yeah no all doing better than they did when i found them yeah and you're
but you're continuing
to farm now you have a farm in northern northern california we still have the
property in fiji other
properties oh is that right yeah uh this program uh is on december 1st perry mason
returns uh what
nine o'clock something like that i think nine o'clock perry mason returns uh
nice to have you back on
nice to be here nice to see you perry thank you perry we'll be right back in
junior law
