And let me introduce my first guest tonight, a very entertaining person, both
on and off the concert stage.
We're delighted to have her with us tonight. This is her latest solo album
entitled Software.
Let me get it for you. There it is, Software.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back to this program, Grace Slick. Grace!
So nice to see you.
How are you doing?
That was very nice.
Oh, wait a minute. You moved your chair. You're going to tumble out of there.
We'll have OSHA in here if anybody gets hurt.
One more. One more. You've got to come up. One more.
Come on. Come on. There you go. All right.
Is that uncomfortable for you?
Well, you're way over here.
No, I'll do the moving around. I'll be all right. This will work out fine.
There.
Hey, David, I tried ordering toast on a stick room service in my hotel this
morning, and they said, what for?
Yeah, that's probably the reaction you did.
I didn't want to tell him.
No, I don't blame you.
How you been?
Okay.
Yeah. How's your daughter?
Thirteen. That says it all.
Is that, uh, I don't have a thirteen-year-old. Is that good or bad?
Well, what we've done is we've repapered the entire room, her bedroom, with Duran
Duran stuff.
Uh-huh.
There's no wallpaper left anymore. It's all Duran Duran.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And, uh, that's by choice. Now, what was she, uh, what did the room look like a
year ago?
It looked like a regular suburban room.
Uh-huh.
I have a very regular kind of house. It's so that, uh...
Where do you live?
In, uh, Marin County in California.
It's a beautiful part of the world, isn't it?
Yeah, it is pretty.
Yeah.
Now what?
Oh, I don't know. I thought, I, uh, I thought you were going to tell us about
your house. I'm sorry.
Hey, David?
Yeah.
What have you been doing lately?
Seriously?
Yeah.
Well, uh...
Any big deals or anything?
No. Over the weekend, you know what my hobby is? I sack my own groceries.
Thank you very much. Thank you.
And we had a, we had a big order. We had six bags.
Yeah.
And, uh, that's what I did on Saturday, and then Sunday, of course, I rested up.
That will keep you busy.
I'll tell you something else, uh, damn it. I bought two bundles of, uh, two
bundles of firewood, and I'm all out of firewood, so I had to go buy two bundles.
Yeah.
Two bundles. What do you suppose I paid for this load of firewood?
About this big.
I can carry both of them.
Ten bucks.
Do you know the amount of money that he just signed a contract for, and we're
hearing about this ten dollars?
What kind of a show is this?
Now, now, Grace...
I know about contracts. I look at all, I find out about all that stuff.
Now, let me, let me, I wanted to ask you about, now, what I was getting to
about your daughter and your house and so on and so forth.
Now, when, when you, uh, in your wilder days, maybe you're still wild.
No, that's why we don't have much to talk about, David.
You, you and me, or you, oh, no.
Did, does she, uh, how would, how do you think she would react to the, um, in
the old days, Grace Slick?
I think right now she likes, she went from a preppy to a punk in about two
months.
And I think right now she'd probably like it if I was a little more active and
disgusting.
Now, uh, looking back on those times, what was your most actively disgusting
thing?
Too numerous to go into.
There isn't any one effort that stood above the rest.
Yeah, did you, did you ever on stage undress?
No, one guy in the middle of a show in Chicago said,
take off your chastity belt, Gracie, and I don't happen to wear any underpants.
So I just went, what do you mean?
Now.
No, that's nothing like undressing, is it?
Now, wait a minute.
I noticed that when you had on Jamie Lee Curtis, you mentioned that 75% of her
film that she didn't have any clothes on,
but you haven't mentioned yet that 75% of my record, when I made it, I didn't
have any clothes on.
You haven't mentioned that because my breasts are not as large as hers.
This was, this was, this album, this album was recorded in the news.
Jamie gets all the plugs.
No, no, no, no, no.
Uh, we get, I tell you what we're going to do.
We're going to go away for a commercial, and then when we get back, we'll get
into some real stuff.
Yeah, okay.
We'll be right back, folks.
Hi there.
They're good, aren't they?
Yeah.
Very exciting.
They're all Spanish castle magic.
Yeah, they're terrific.
What'd you say?
A little bit of Spanish castle magic.
Very nice.
They're all so very loud.
Oh, they're good.
What?
Grace, Grace, darling, come on.
For me, that's a compliment.
Thank you, darling.
This afternoon, we were talking about your appearance here, and it was brought
to my attention that,
is this or is this not true?
There's a book about, of rumors concerning famous people that you attended the
wedding of,
was it Trisha Nixon?
Does that ring a bell?
Yes.
Did you attend that wedding?
No, I didn't.
The rumor's not true.
I didn't attend the wedding.
I was invited to a tea party at the White House.
Um, because Trisha had gone to Finch College, I'd gone to Finch College, and
she sent out
invitations to everybody who's ever gone to Finch College, and, uh, my name was
under
the name of Grace Wing, so they didn't know who they were inviting.
What year was this?
Uh, 60, 70, 69, 70.
Yeah.
And I thought you're supposed to go, and, like, with your husband, and be, uh,
straight,
kind of the way people are from Finch College.
And a tea, uh, those kind of teas, people from Finch College, you have a long
thing.
Tea service at either end, you stand around and gesture and talk to each other
at the cup.
Right.
So I took Abby Hoffman, and, um...
Now, did you, did you think you were going to get into this at the time with
Abby Hoffman?
Well, yeah, because I had an invitation, and I didn't think they knew who I was.
Yeah.
So, uh, what, I had, um, acid in my pocket, and I was just going to sort of
gesture into
Richard's cup, because entertainers gesture a lot, and we'd be standing there,
and he'd
get a little into tea, but the thing is, he's so goofy, I don't think anybody
would have
noticed.
But I never made it in, because they said, they came out to me and said, I'm
sorry, you
can't come in.
I said, I have an invitation.
I went to Finch College.
Yeah.
The guy said, you're a security risk.
He said, no, I'm not.
I'm Grace Slick, and I'm, you know, but they wouldn't let me.
Now, was it because of you, or because of Abby, that you couldn't get in?
I'm not sure.
Uh, I think, uh, possibly they recognized Abby, and, uh, maybe they didn't like
me either,
just on a general principle.
And you thought it would be fun, or were you just teasing about loading up the
guy's
tea?
No, I was a sick person at the time.
I was not kidding.
Yeah.
Uh, now, what about Finch College?
Not a big school, is it?
Well, it's where, I'm, I don't know if they even still exist, but at the time,
it seemed
to me, I could be wrong, those of you who go to Finch and are offended by
this, that people with money send their girls there who don't make straight A's
and
can't get into Vassar to learn how to pour tea, kind of, and, like, maybe speak
French
and stuff like that.
And did you, did you learn both of those things?
Well, I went there because I wanted to see New York, and I can't just say to my
parents,
will you give me $10,000 to live in New York for a year?
That's no good.
But how about college in New York?
That sounds better.
They went for that.
Yeah, they went for that.
And, uh, they have a pretty good football team?
It's an all-girls school, isn't it?
Yeah.
These, by the way, you can have this.
This is, this is, I want you to take that home.
That's our new collapsible drinking cups.
Now, now, Grace, are you, are you, are you, are you, are you still taking
photographs of
people here with your, uh, uh, SX-70?
No, did that for a while, and I've got to start doing it again.
Now, what was the purpose of that, just for the heck of it?
Well, people were taking pictures of me, and I thought it'd be a neat idea to
take pictures
of the audience when we were on stage and shoot it back, and people seem to
like that.
But it's awfully expensive.
Do you know how much SX-?
No, you don't care.
Yeah, you, you're the kind of guy who does care.
$10 for a load of wood.
Yeah, it's about, he cares.
Is, is it more expensive than firewood?
Yeah.
Well, see, the firewood, what I got there, I counted them up, it was easily a
dollar a stick.
Doesn't that seem high for, well, high for firewood, at any rate?
Um, don't you think?
Do I care?
Yeah, that's probably the question that America is asking, too.
Now, uh, oh, yeah, the country music, you still a big fan of country music?
Well, now, let me, um, get out of this one.
I do like Willie Nelson.
Listen, I like, uh, uh, Waylon, uh, not Waylon and Madam.
God.
No, no.
Sorry, Waylon Jennings.
Waylon Jennings.
And, uh, the only thing that I objected to was the business of, my baby has
left me, I'm so lonely, I'm blue, won't you come back to me, because I can't
live without you.
And if I hear one more configuration of that sentiment, uh, you know, uh.
Yeah, yeah.
So, I'm guessing there's none of that on this one.
This is software with Grace Slick.
And recorded, ladies and gentlemen, in the nude.
Grace, thank you very much for being here again tonight.
Grace Slick.
We're on the back to take a look at the Olympic team from the Virgin Islands
right after you look at this, folks.
By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea.
Ah, there's nothing like a day at the beach.
It's one of nature's wonders until you start to starve.
Then what are you supposed to do, just collapse and die?
Well, how about a snack that is easy to carry?
Toast on a stick from Mr. Larry.
There's really nothing better for a long day at the beach than a whoop melting
the sun like a popsicle or breaking the waves like fried eggs.
It's the one snack that actually improves when it's wet and salty.
So, when you're hungry, here's a good trick.
Mr. Larry's toast on a stick.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my Lord.
Hey!
Whew!
