Thank you Paul. Thank you folks. We have a wonderful program. Let's bring out
our first
guest right now. It was right here in the studio where our first guest created
characters like
Roseanne Rosanadana, Emily Letella, Liza Lupner. All of those on the original
Saturday Night Live,
this woman is now starring in a brand new motion picture called Haunted Honeymoon
and it's always
a pleasure to have her here and a nice welcome for her back in this building.
Please say hello
to Gilda Radner.
How are you? Nice to see you. You look terrific.
Well thank you. You feel all right? Yeah. Having a nice summer so far? Yeah it's
okay. Are
you nervous being here on this program? Are you nervous being back in this
studio? It's the fact this
studio I haven't been here since when was the last the last Saturday Night Live
that I was on was 1981?
1965 or something? Five years ago. And I haven't been in this studio since we
all said goodbye on that last show. So when you come into the building this
afternoon was it did you have butterflies? Not only that but I've been having
nightmares about it for the last five days.
It's amazing. You see but when you do publicity for a movie you have to come on
and you have to do these things over again and your show is a very big show now.
Oh yeah. It's big.
No but don't. But you would have been here anywhere. You're not just here to
plug a movie right? Yeah. No I would have come just to see you. Just to be with
you on television.
Thank you. When else do we get to see each other? Exactly. Well we appreciate
it. We appreciate it. And you and Paul of course have worked together.
You started out together didn't you in Toronto. Absolutely in Godspell. We were,
that was the first job, first professional job I'd ever had. I can't speak for
Paul. Is that the first? Same for me yeah. Okay. Our first job.
And that company of people actually included. There were some really amazing
people in there. Yeah. Marty Short, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, Nancy Dolman.
We all started out together. Didn't know what would happen. We just spent a
year jumping up and down. Now how long was the production in Toronto? It was a
year. It went on a little longer than a year. And what kind of a play was it?
Because I never saw it. It was a very hot musical, wasn't it? Yeah. Based on
the Gospel according to St. Matthew. And Victor Garber was our Jesus and we
were all the disciples. And we just would jump. He'd speak and we'd jump up and
down. And we'd jump for an hour and then they had intermission where we stayed
on stage and still jumped. And then we'd jump for another hour and Paul would
play the music to us jumping.
And it was literally all you were doing was jumping? Wasn't it, Paul? Pretty
much. You did a song though. I did a song, yeah. Dare you to do it. Right now.
The whole song? Yeah. What was the song? No, just under the first two lines. A
couple of lines. David, what did you say? Okay. What's the name of the song?
I can see a swath of sinners. I can see a swath of sinners sitting yonder and
they're acting like a pack of fools. Gazing into space and let their minds
wander instead of studying the good Lord's rules. You better pay attention to
your comprehension. There's going to be a quiz at your ascension. Not to
mention any further. Better start to learn your lessons. Well, yeah.
Yeah. That's amazing. I did it. I have to tell you. That's really. That's
really. So it really was a strict biblical adaptation.
I have to tell you that if Paul ever had a chance to work musically into what
he was playing, something that would make us laugh or break up on stage, he
would take that opportunity. Yeah. He does it here occasionally, too. Yes, I
know.
Forgive me for asking this, but are you Canadian? You're not Canadian, are you?
No, but I moved there in 1969. Yeah. Well, isn't it interesting that in that
one small city, relatively speaking, that there was that cluster of very
talented people? Yes, yes. Yeah. Very interesting. Okay. We're going to do a
commercial and then we'll be back and I guess we have, we're going to take a
look at your new film. Yeah. All right. We'll be back here with Gilda Rebbe.
Well, it's strange that you would have an opinion on it, uh, whatsoever. Yes.
Uh, where do you live? Where? Oh, where? I live right near you. You live near
me? Yes.
No, I just asked her if she liked the city in Connecticut thinking that's where
she lived and said she liked it, but she didn't live there. Uh, kind of like
this woman from Kansas City earlier.
Um, now, uh, Gilda, the, the movie Haunted, uh, Honeymoon. Haunted Honeymoon,
right. Now, this is, uh, uh, written by, uh, Gene Wilder. Gene Wilder. It's
directed by Gene, my husband. Your husband, Gene Wilder. How long have you been
married?
Uh, it'll be two years in September. Do you enjoy working that closely with the
man? Oh, yeah, for sure. Really? Yeah. It doesn't cause a lot of tension and
problems?
Well, yeah. I mean, there, we're thinking next time we work together, we'll get
a nurse for when we go home. Oh, I see. One of those deals. Yes, right. Yeah.
Uh, and you want to tell people what the film is and then we'll look at a clip
here? Right. It's a, um, it's a comedy chiller and, uh. A comedy chiller. Yes.
The studio told you to say that, didn't they? Right. It's funny and it's
frightening. Funny and frightening. That's right.
All right. And, uh, I think what we're going to see is Dom DeLuise is also in
it and he plays Gene's aunt. Okay. And that's not, not Dom in drag, but he
really is his aunt. And I'm to marry Gene in the movie. We're going to get
married. So that's the frightening part.
This is, this is, well, we'll see. And, uh, and, uh, now, uh, I think in this
clip, my, to be future aunt Kate is giving me some advice before I get married.
Okay. It's called, uh, Haunted Honeymoon, Gilda Radner, uh, Gene Wilder, and,
uh, Dom DeLuise as aunt Jean. Is that right?
No, Aunt Kate.
And Aunt Kate.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Comedy chiller.
Yeah, comedy chiller.
Comedy chiller.
And, uh, it's, uh, opening nationwide now?
That's right. This, uh, this Friday, July 25th. Opening all over.
It's a big hit for you and, uh, your husband and, uh, director and co-star.
Okay. Thank you.
Now, uh, I understand there's something else here.
Yes. Well, um, I get to go on television all the time. Right? I mean, I have.
Anytime you want. You can come here.
Anytime. Thank you. And, uh, have been a lot. But, um, I'm very happy now.
I have a wonderful life in Connecticut. Mm-hmm.
And I have some wonderful neighbors who never get to go on television. Mm-hmm.
So, I brought them with me tonight.
My neighbors from Connecticut.
What a thoughtful gesture.
Right. And I'd like you to meet them.
These are, are these honestly your neighbors from Connecticut?
Absolutely the truth.
Like next door neighbors? Backyard neighbors?
They live right down the road. Across the street, down the road.
All right. Are we going to, are they here?
Yeah, they're right here.
These are my neighbors from Connecticut.
And we're going to meet them and Gilda Radner's neighbors.
What is I mean?
Hello?
Now, do you want to introduce them?
Do you have them?
Yeah. Okay.
Uh, I tell you what.
Uh, Biff, we have some gifts for your neighbors, Gilda.
Why don't you go ahead and introduce them as, uh, Biff Henderson is passing out
the gifts.
Well, there's...
And wave when you're introduced.
Yes, that's David Lyons and Phyllis Lyons.
Phyllis. Nice to see you.
Right there. And their children are Zachary.
Zachary.
Jody.
And Wendy.
Wendy.
Right. And then there's Harold Orlo and Eileen Orlo.
Kids, how are you?
Harold is a, is a dentist in Connecticut.
Uh-huh.
And that's Alyssa and Jason.
And then, then there's their, the parents, um, Rini and Sam Oster.
And they're Eileen and Phyllis', Eileen and Phyllis' parents.
Now, yeah, they're waving.
Well, folks, thank you very much for, for being here.
I certainly appreciate it and nice meeting you.
Wait, but there's one more thing that they'd like to do.
One more thing.
What a, this is a handsome group of folks, by the way.
Yeah, there's just one more thing.
One more thing.
That they, they'd like to do, okay?
We have a little presentation?
We are here to say, Haunted Honeymoon is coming your way.
You will laugh, you might scream.
Things really aren't as they seem.
Werewolves here and there, they might even give you a scare.
Who done it?
Who did it?
You'll find out soon when you see Haunted Honeymoon.
That's pretty elaborate.
It's, uh, oh, my God.
Gilda Radner and her neighbors, ladies and gentlemen.
Gilda, nice to see you again.
Have a great summer.
Thank you.
That was terrific.
We'll be back.
Comedy, as has been said over and over, can be serious business.
Do you worry that people misunderstand you or don't you care?
Because, obviously, the perception of you is as a zany guy with a certain kind
of mercurial
community talent.
I don't understand me.
I don't know.
I don't, I don't expect.
I used to, the answer to your question ten years ago would have been a lot
different from
what I'm answering now, but I used to say, if only they would realize, if only
they would
realize.
I don't know what there is to realize anymore.
I don't know what it is.
My life has gone topsy-turvy.
I'm, my, if, I remember Walter Lippman used to say, a man is not good.
A man is good for something.
And I think what I'm good at is comedy.
But in my private life, I'm not very funny.
I don't, I don't stand up like Mel Brooks and do comedy routines and entertain
the crowd.
My heart would start to pound and I, I'd have to run to the bathroom.
And this is okay now because there's no audience except for a couple people on
the side who are
very friendly forces.
But if you put me in a, in a motion picture in front of the camera, I'm not at
all nervous.
Put me on the, the Tonight Show or some big show with an audience and I would
be very nervous.
I don't mean I couldn't do it, but I'd say it's not worth it.
You mean do I want to be, to show how serious I am and play all the dramatic
parts and do Macbeth
and Hamlet.
I wanted to do that when I was 18 and 20 and I've done, I'd rather be, I'd
rather be in
a good comedy that has something that's realistic at the base of it so that it's
a human being
being funny.
I'm not a comedian.
I'm a comic actor.
If that, if I can find the parts or write the parts that do that, I'll be happy.
Sounds like there's a difference between you and your wife, Gilda Radner, in
that Gilda
Gilda thrives on the situation in front of a live audience.
Absolutely.
Saturday Night Live, walking out on the Tonight Show, that's, that's her bailiwick.
I, I would go crazy.
She, their last minute changes, the cue cards and get up and tonight, it's
Saturday Night
Live and she goes on and did those brilliant characters.
I, I wish that I could.
I would like to try it.
I mean, I would have done it probably 20 years ago, but I don't think I'd be so
good at it
now.
Is the flip side true?
Is she as uncomfortable on film as you would be in a live television situation?
She says she doesn't want to work in films anymore because she, she doesn't get
any feedback.
Everyone says, but in television with the audience there, they're responding
immediately to what
you've just done.
It's a barometer.
How am I doing?
In films, you don't get that till the movie opens.
I mean, for someone who's waiting for that.
There's another kind of response in films.
It's like, um, I don't know.
I get, I'm nervous or uneasy, insecure in lots of situations.
But when the movie camera's on, I feel like the respect or the love that I
always wanted
from my mother or from God or whomever was important to me as a kid, I finally
get it when
they say, turn over, roll them.
Or when the curtain used to go up on stage, I felt that way.
They can't get me now.
I'm free.
I can be at peace.
I can do what I want.
So that performing area is your sanctuary, but has it gotten to the point where
you can,
where you can take some sense of security with you in your day-to-day life?
Now, yes.
When I was just turning out, it was more difficult.
And I couldn't separate, but I think I can now, yeah.
How's Gilda doing?
Great.
She is.
As you know, she's been through rough times, but she's doing great.
Now, she's doing so well that she's out promoting her book, and I'm babysitting
for the dog
who's over there.
Does the dog want a little on-camera time?
Because the dog was on your lap.
Bring her over, Rachel.
Bring the dog over, won't you?
Oh, Gilda would like this.
What's the dog's name?
Sparkle.
Sparkle.
Hello, baby.
So here's the dog.
Is this your dog or Gilda's dog?
It's our dog, but if you give the dog a choice to answer, she'll say Gilda's
dog.
And evidently, it's a talking dog, and an amazing animal.
No, no, no.
No talking.
She'll talk to us, but she has her own silent language.
She asked to go along today.
She didn't want to be left home alone.
How did she indicate that?
She goes like that on my leg.
Well, it could indicate a variety of things, but...
No, no, no.
I had just taken her out to do her job before that.
You know, we don't want to dwell on something which was sad for a while,
but evidently it's taken a happy turn.
People feel a tremendous affection for Gilda Bradner,
more than just the affinity that they might feel for a celebrity.
They feel something for her as a person,
because her characters were more than just funny.
They were human beings.
Judy Miller.
Wasn't that the girl's name?
The Judy Miller Show.
Judy Miller Show.
Emily Lutella.
In the bedroom and Emily Lutella and whatnot.
So they wonder about how she's doing with a genuine sense of concern.
More than I ever dreamed.
When I walk down the streets in any city,
people come up and just take my arm,
how's she doing?
They don't even have to say Gilda.
They just stop and say, how's she doing?
And tell her I said hello.
Tell her I'm praying for her.
Tell her whatever.
Then they started to hear that she was doing okay again.
And then they just smile at me.
Sometimes they just smile and say,
like that or give me the V sign or something like that.
It's a tremendous power that sometimes I think people in your position
or elsewhere in the world of entertainment take for granted
and have to be reminded of how much happiness you bring to people
and how genuinely grateful they are for that,
even though sometimes they can't articulate it as well as they might like.
That smile when you walk down the street,
the smile of recognition and thanks.
It's been a tough year.
Thanks.
Then I know because it's very difficult to appreciate
when you're doing it all the time in the business.
The laughter means so much to people.
I suppose at all times, but especially these days,
it seems that life is more difficult than it has been for me
and God knows for Gilda.
But I think for everyone, they're looking for a little relief.
I used to think, sure, they get relief, they get a laugh,
but I didn't know that the laugh meant that much.
Sometimes it's a difference between going to sleep at night depressed
and worried about how you're going to make it
and going through with a little confidence that it'll be okay, it'll be okay.
Because laughing is good for you.
It's good for the liver.
It's good for the soul.
It's good for your whole emotional equipment.
I'm asking you what you know about these things.
How will I know if he's thinking of me?
I try to fall, but I'm too shy.
Falling in love is so bitter sweet.
This love is strong, but I feel weak.
Oh, wake me.
I'm singing.
Wish I had you near me now.
Uh-huh.
Say there's no mistake in what I feel and really love.
Later in L.A.
We'll be right back.
